I have noticed that my phone grts VERY hot when watching a youtube video on 4G. Also playing games, and just generally using 4G makes it very hot. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Never noticed much of a temperature increase on my phone.
I can understand it heating up like a laptop when under heavy load. do you have an app that tells you the battery temperature ?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
This happens to me but playing games not so much video streaming... I have battery indicator, drop the notification bar down and battery temp is about 40oc (Aussie metric) so not sure what that is in Fahrenheit.

Yeah my phone also gets hot occasion, only "very hot" when I'm charging it and it's on my bed or under my blanket. I figure that's due to it not being able to air out properly

i think it is normal for the phone to heat up when multi tasking . my phone gets hot too , it even scares me a little lol.
Batteries heat up...it's normal.

Lets put it this way..
I stopped my car once because I thought my leg was on fire, I jumped out of the car as if I was burning..
Through heavy jeans..
It was my phone (older one)
We are holding high powered devices wrapped in plastic and metal (mostly plastic)
More powerful than many older laptops, WITHOUT any cooling devices..
its normal and will shut down if it get too hot

My charge lights have been flashing back and forth from green to orange when I am in the car. What does that mean? Cheap car charger?

Sounds like it. I would try a different one and see if it makes a difference. I bought the cheapest one I could find and I've never had that problem.

sounds to me like a bad connection somewhere
From my past experiences the orange and green flashing light means the device has reached a critical temperature and charging ability has been suspended momentarily until the device reaches a suitable temperature.

Agreed. However, I think we should email HTC on this matter... I would like to know every possible factor of why the light turns green. why it turns red. Also, I would like a change as well.. I would like it if the light didn't stay green while the phone is plugged in and I just get a message. I would like it to blink in some way like 3 fast flashes. or something like that.
Could be temp. I live in AZ. It was 102 today. I think I was charging and surfing a bit. I have never seen my OEM charger do that tho. I will swap back and see

oh after you just said that... IT IS the temp. lol. IN OTHER WORDS. keep the phone cool. can't leave it on a dash or in a car. it will overheat. It has NOTHING to do with the charger.
Keeping anything cool in Arizona, in July, is not easy! I can't walk outside with the phone for five minutes without it getting up to 100+ degrees. If its in the sun for even a minute... Forget it.
It has been over 100 for something like forty days in a row.

Anyone else noticing their phone getting really hot? Especially at the top, right where the antenna is?
"Really hot" is a relative term. Please measure the cpu temperature with a program in the marketplace and update this post with valuable data.

Ooh okay, is there a particular app I should use?
But to describe, its hot to the touch. Uncomfortable on bare non-hand skin.
Yeah I've noticed the top right of the phone gets really hot compared to previous devices I've owned even the sgs2. I assume that as devices are getting thinner more heat will dissipate into the outer casing so its probably fine just a little disconcerting

I dont mean to hijack your thread but check out my thread on the issue here:

The Nexus goes above 42 degrees celsius with minimal use while my Galaxy S2 stays at 27 degrees celsius with very heavy use (internet, 3D gaming, music playing, multiple apps running).

This device runs so hot. When I'm playing mine craft or on youtube this phone gets dangerously hot.
How how hot does your xperia ion get?
Is there a limit on how hot it should?
Does heat take a toll on battery life?

According to an app I have, "Battery Widget" my battery has got to 114°, it was 110 outside at the time. Its at 95 right now.
Sent from my LT28at using xda app-developers app
Mine is only at 25°C which should be around 80°C right now. Max I've seen on my ion is ~35°C(95°F). I'm using Battery Widget as well.
I don't have a battery app, so I can't know exactly how hot it gets, but it definitely gets way too hot! If streaming music over Bluetooth, this thing gets crazy hot! Literally HAVE to take it out of my pocket!

Just curious to no if someone has an answer. You see that drop in the graph and then it climbs back up? How can that climb happen without charging. I never plugged it into anything. So how can the line climb back up? Thanks

The graph is an estimation, not 100% accurate. Sometimes when the battery gets warm, the device may think it is a little lower than it actually is. So after using it sometimes if you turn the screen off for a while you can actually "gain percentages".

What sort of temperature are you guys seeing while playing games? Am getting 40c kinder hot to touch after while. Shame because battery life is just so good.

It should be fine, it doesn't get any not hot than any other device. You just feel it more because it's metal.
It's actually better for the device, because the heat is getting expelled. Unlike plastic phones where it stays inside of the device.

40c under load is great. You just feel it because aluminum is a good heatsink material.

Yeah mines about the same as yours between 35 and 45
It's ONLY hitting 40 & you are only feeling it because of the design intent. Think of the alloy body as a heat exchanger, just like the plate type used to indirectly transfer heat from boilers or steam generators to water for domestic or hydronic use. Just like in those applications, metal alloys are much better conductors than plastic composites (which is why insulation/insulators are made of ceramics or composite materials), so the transfer of the heat energy away from the device internals to the cooler ambient atmosphere is much more noticeable on the M8. Other devices are also generating as much heat, but they are relying on ported vents & copper heat tape to remove a much more limited amount of heat away from the device internals. You also notice it to a much lesser extent on those composite plastic devices because they are using insulative materials, so more of that heat energy byproduct remains inside the body for a longer period of time. The only time the plastic devices really have an advantage is in hot climates, when the device is being used in a windshield mount & even then, once the device heats up, it still takes longer to dissipate the accumulated heat load.
40 degrees Celsius is a testament to the laws of thermal dynamics & why you see the M8 dissipating more heat energy.
