GN getting really hot? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Anyone else noticing their phone getting really hot? Especially at the top, right where the antenna is?

"Really hot" is a relative term. Please measure the cpu temperature with a program in the marketplace and update this post with valuable data.

Ooh okay, is there a particular app I should use?
But to describe, its hot to the touch. Uncomfortable on bare non-hand skin.

Yeah I've noticed the top right of the phone gets really hot compared to previous devices I've owned even the sgs2. I assume that as devices are getting thinner more heat will dissipate into the outer casing so its probably fine just a little disconcerting

I dont mean to hijack your thread but check out my thread on the issue here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20100575
The Nexus goes above 42 degrees celsius with minimal use while my Galaxy S2 stays at 27 degrees celsius with very heavy use (internet, 3D gaming, music playing, multiple apps running).

Gnex death grip issues

Does anyone having death grip issues when you use the left hand and hold the lower part of the phone? Or is this just normal?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Nope
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
No drop of signal?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
None here.
Mine is fine.
The manual clearly states the main antenna is located in the lower right corner of the phone, so you shouldn't be having a problem unless you're mistaken about left/right
No problems here.
Haven't encountered such an issue.

While I agree the phone drops signal randomly, there's no physical flaw that would cause it to drop while holding it a certain way. The only reason it happened to the iPhone is because the metal band around the phone was actually part of the antenna.

Not too sure about that... the manual that came with the GSM Nexus stated that covering the main antenna would cause problems..

Nobody death grips in normal, everyday use.
If i put my hand on the upper back of the phone i go from 4bars wifi to 2bars.. so i would guess the antenna sits in this area.

confirmed ... most all phones exhibit this behavior though
No change in signal bar but signal stregnth goes from
-73dbm 20 asu to -81 dbm 16 asu. so Yes there is an effect.
But all my other phones had this issue at some point
from worst to better.

A little bit of common sense would help.
Humans are bags full of water. Water dampens radio waves. So yes, your hand will decrease the signal strength if you wrap it around the antenna area - on all mobile phones.

Since those humans have a lot less than 1% Schnaps in them, it doesn't affect the dampening very much.

I am using setcpu to put variety of profiles and one of them is cooling profile. Which basically is underclocking so cpu cools down a little bit, so my cpu doesn't have any trouble. Right now I have my cpu temperature set to 73c, but I wanna know how hot can gnex cpu can get without causing any trouble thanks!

80s? That sounds a lot to me but who am I to judge? lol
Thanks so much
I agree 80 does sound a little hot, but keep in mind there's no cooling fan or anything and the components are enclosed in a plastic case + any case you may have.
I usually only see 60 when I'm doing something like running GPS in my car with no ac and the outside temp is already 105 Fahrenheit.

For most Processors 80c is really pushing the limit on tolerance. You generally don't wanna go higher than upper 50s low 60s.

Does your Galaxy Nexus smell weird?

I have rooted and unlocked my phone many times and I am very familiar with the process. After I updated my phone to 4.1.2 I noticed that if I remove my battery and smell near that area I can smell burnt plastic. Is my phone dying? Does your phone smell like that?

Unroot and see if the smell persists...
Has your phone been in the sun for an extended period of time? Wikipedia says 105 degrees average in summer where you live, so I imagine a day on a dashboard might cause this...
It is stock and I don't leave my phone on the dashboard. I keep it in my pocket. Temperature is 50-60 F around this time of the year.

When the back cover is removed, there is a very distinct smell... kind of like vanilla as someone mentioned in this thread. Glad other people's Galaxy Nexuses smell weird as well.

!--Unbelievable--! I watched my 3 day old Note II's screen glass crack in my hand!!

This concerns me, so I thought I would warn other Note II owners. Beware of temperature changes.
I went from in my truck, outside where it was near 10F out. (-11c) and into a building while using my Note II. Once in the building, as I was holding the phone and using it, the screen (glass) cracked from the middle left of Home button in an arc to where the power button is.
The phone is 3 days old and never been dropped.
Only the glass cracked. One line.
Reported today, but because it's Sunday, I have to call Rogers Managment Office to see if they will replace it.
I have never heard of this happening before.

Every phone, actually any device is useless with extreme temperatures.
Matters more is the duration of how long the device was exposed to certain degree of cold or heat.
Sent from my SGH-I317M using xda app-developers app
That's surprising! I wonder if you got a lemon...
I saw this video not too long ago and in it, the lady put her note 2 in the freezer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=KERzJo9L7vM#t=63s
A typical household freezer should be about -18 Celsius.
I've had my old Galaxy 1 out in similar temperatures at Whistler and it didn't do any damage and the new gorilla glass should be even tougher than its predecessor.
Regardless, they should give you a replacement since it sounds like it died in normal operating conditions.
Damnit physics. Once again you win.

32F really sounds too high for most winter states I think. I mean, even here in Utah 32F during winter is considered a warm day...at least for me since it gets much lower but luckily never had an issue with my phones.
I will be more careful from now on though.
Good news! Rogers will replace the phone where I got it.

I guess that's one good thing for moving out of Alaska, about the only one I can think of though... It's -26F there right now. I've never seen a screen crack from the cold before though. Was a computer tech for the Fairbanks school district. We had plenty of cracked video cables in the teacher's laptops when they left them in their cars overnight, but no cracked screens.
Quick temp changes are the enemy not necessarily the extremes themselves.

Thoughts on the LGOG

I came from the Galaxy S3. Traded for the Optimus yesterday. So far I love it! I do tons of gaming and it feels so much smoother than my S3 did. The keyboard is the ONLY issue I have found so far, it has a very hard time keeping up with me. Lol. What's your thoughts on the most powerful phone in 'Murica?

check out SwiftKey 3 if you're looking for a legitimately good keyboard, its prediction and auto correction features are ridiculously good.
as for the phone, I've got to say it's the best phone I've ever had, and I've had couple of android phones before this (came from the Epic 4G Touch) and also have had iPhone, and none of those are even close to the experience I've gotten on LGOG.

If you want a phone that runs hot, try the Evo3D. I swear, if my heat ever went out in my house, all I had to do was drill the processor in that for a few minutes. Accidently left mine under my pillow one time when it was charging. Got so hot, it burned my face when I tried to make a phone call. I stream Netflix alot, and it got uncomfortable to hold it. This phone runs like a liquid-cooled dream compared to that.
