Canonical announced Ubuntu on Android this morning. Looks pretty awesome!!! I'm not a huge Ubuntu user but having this kind of experience available on the phone would be absolutely great. Worth the 2gb of space it'll take up.
Mind.Blown. This looks fantastic! Me want, me want!

You don't need to have a dock necessarily. Just the MHL cable. There are some 3rd party docks already that sit it up vertically on its USB port I think.
reuploaded vid Video
unique problem i see for the moment is that (requirements) you need mhl AND usb and you only achieve that with special dock BUT i could imagine just hooking the mhl and the use bluetooth if it works
I want to see it on my Nexus
need some dev's to request more info!

"Open source developer"
I'm really excited about this. I need this at my home because I only use my laptop for productivity. This will make me more productive without my laptop. One step closer to getting rid of the laptop.
I believe Google were thinking along the same lines for Jelly Bean and ChromeOS integration.

This.... This is just ridiculous! In the best way possible! I see no mention of specific devices so I assume that this would work with tablets as well so long as they met the system requirements? I have a Xoom that I might try this on....

exactly the point i was getting at, we need something to hook up our usb wireless keyboard and mouse dongles if this is going to be something they want us to use on a monitor or big screen tv, basically we need a 2nd female mini usb port or have it give us a HDMI/USB port from the single mini usb
Sounds awesome! but only really useful if you can dual boot between Ubuntu and ICS.. or even better, quick switch between the 2 but you would have to have way more RAM than 1GB
I hate to burst everyone's bubble. Ubuntu was at ces and when I saw this live(Motorola atrix) I asked them if the source will be released? Sadly enough, they stated that it was going to be sold to OEMs as a means of funding the Ubuntu project. I don't really blame them since you have to make money somewhere. Just wanted to say that it may be a long while before your gnex has Ubuntu on it.

did you read the article? Do you understand Motorola's web top?
Basically you phone runs a small starter program all the time, this allows web top (Ubuntu) to detect when you connect the web top (MHL & USB) accessories. It then runs web top (Ubuntu) OS with android (at least in web top) in a window on the screen. This allows full access to both OS's at the same time while reducing resource demand (since they share the kernel) and not forcing a complete reboot.

that's what i've been wondering too. i'm not sure why the contacts are on the right side of the phone. don't most people turn the phone sideways so that the left side it faceing down?
Damn i hope this dock will make it dock to and external monitor, keyboard and mouse just function as the heart of the system. basicly a computer just driven by the phone.

It's part of the Enchantment. It now has a soul, remember?
maybe it's like the HP touchpad? it charges on it's dock (touchstone) on multiple sides. That thing doesn't have any contacts at all. Like an NFC interaction?

maybe the presentation was photoshoped wrong??
Yes, I see now that the keynote photo was wrong, but if you think:
1- contacts are on the right side
2. usually, people rotate the phone in landscape to the left side
So, there's something that doesn't work.

I think that's on the mark. It's just a presentation. It's not like they had a camera crew filming actual footage of a Galaxy Nexus in the dock lol Photoshop all the way.
I'd like to see a car dock similar to the nexus one aswell.
Idea
That dock gave me an idea on how to solve some of Androids 3rd party gadget problems.
The largest producers of android devices should get together and agree on the external layout of a "externalt dock interface" so 3rd party gadget makers made their stuff fit the dock interface, and the phone maker (or 3rd party...) could make the dock for the dock. This way each phone maker and model can continue to experiement and differentiate in phone design and size, while the gadget makers could concentrate on making cool gadgets and know that the userbase would be much larger.
Philips already launched something similar, but a middle-dongle-thingy would make it much more userfriendly.
Do you think there will be an affordable car dock this time? The $85 they wanted for the Nexus One car dock was WAY to much for me.
Looks like the official accessories can be found here. They show a dock and a vehicle mount.
http://shop.htcpedia.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-accessories.html
Excellent, the availability of a decent car dock has sealed the deal on this for me.
Was holding off buying the Galaxy Nexus until I knew there was a proper dock. I've got so used to my original Nexus One car dock (despite the cost!) that a new phone is a non-starter without one. Off to place my order now!

OMG! I LOVE THIS PHONE even more. Tonight I was able to connect my Apple Bluetooth Keyboard and Rocksoul Bluetooth Mouse and am now doing my homework on my new tablet computer! Our Galaxy S2 really is an amazing device. Not only is it a sick phone, it allows us to have a personal computer in our hands ready to do whatever work we need at anytime.
This phone's value just went UP in my book. I got my Apple Silver Wireless Keyboard for 65.00 & currently use it with my Mac Mini.
The Rocksoul silver mouse set me back 25.00 tonight at Microcenter. I'm sure there may be cheaper alternatives however I can confirm both work very well and complement the phone very well.
Any questions please ask....by the way I posted this from my Apple keyboard!
The only caveat is that the phone allowed me to pair 2 devices at once. I had to unpair my bluetooth earpiece to get my mouse to pair up.
I'm sure there's a work around out there...for now I'm happy I'm able to do my homework on my phone it doesn't matter

Now, we need a keyboard app that once installed and selected, the on-screen keyboard will stay hidden. i remember back in the days before Android, with my Windows PDA, they had a small keyboard program that when activated will prevent the on screen keyboard from popping up when you needed to type.
It seems something like that should be out there in the market. i havent found it though.
Edit: i think i found one -

The only downside is that canonical has said that they're looking to work with OEM's on this project, and don't have any immediate plans to release to the public.
I'm really curious what hardware they're using to make this magic happen. They show a phone docked, but how is it connected via mouse/keyboard/monitor? MHL with bluetooth peripherals? USB OTG and MHL combo on the back of the dock? I've been waiting for something like this, lucky me that ubuntu is the one that's making it happen.
would be sweet unless they some how integrate unity
"That's absolutely amazing"
Like that they planning on keep all supported phones updated to the newest Ubuntu release.
I know it's not quite the same, but there is a way already to have ubuntu on our phones.

A similar dual os via docking comes with motorola phones. Many developers have already improved on the motorola mini-buntu.
This may take it to an even better level

correct, but the current incarnations are actual installations, and they don't Sync immediately live between the two OS
the ones we got running right now are either virtualized version of Ubuntu in our phone, or they actually replace Android, and it requires much tweaking for it to do what currently is cooking at Ubuntu Dev
Does anyone have a leak of that beta development of Ubuntu for Android?
i want to try to make it work on our phones
Also how does one even sign up as a Dev on Ubuntu to get access to the repositories for Ubuntu Android?
This is probably not going to be easily backported to other devices. Like Android itself, it needs native drivers that homebrewers aren't really going to be able to code, so don't expect to see this running on our phones, at least not well enough to be more than a novelty.
It's cool tech, though, and especially on the new generation of phones with Krait or Core A15 this is going to be a real potential desktop replacement for a lot of people who only do light computing. I think this is ultimately where computing is going to go for most people, although it might be a few years before the technology is quite good enough.

I just found a cheap bt-kb but I'd like to have a slide kb
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
If you didn't mind rigging it, you could just break off the edges to the iPhone one (i'm assuming it's generic bluetooth) and then glue it to a generic plastic case. You'd get the slide action at least.
I gave up on this a while ago, if anything they'd make something like this for the most standardized, popular, generic, whatever Android phone out there. So GalNex or GSIII....
The iPhone always has more cases than Android phones, because there's only one iPhone, and I hate that. Plus almost all if not all Android phones are not symmetrical and flat like the iPhone 4+ so something like a slide out keyboard would be...more difficult.

Actually... since we do have *the* Google Phone, you might draw enough support for a Kickstarter project. Charge people $50 or whatever, and get one designed and manufactured.
Take input from the Kickstarter crowd, then make it! No ****, this could be something, I mean if a load of people already do this on KS, why can't we for something we want?
I'm in no position to pursue this, but I'll be your first backer I think. =)

There's hope for some kind of jury-rigged thing you could make yourself though. May even work if you have a holster and a thin enough bluetooth keyboard to clip in.
If I wind up ordering a BT keyboard I'll see what I can rig up.
I think I will try to merge a case and a kb when I will have the time to work...
I guess Kickstarting something would be a bit much. I look forward to seeing what you guys conjure up.
Don't forget that clearance is tight between the camera and the hump at the bottom, I don't know if that iPhone one will even fit...

How is this helping anything? Maybe this would be handy if you had no thumbs to reach the front of your device.. lol
If it an issue of not being able to reach spots of your Note2.. use Nova launcher and configure it with swipe actions to do things.
I agree.. redundant.
Plus.. do you see how HUGE this case is?? it adds a massive hunk of case below the phone. The pics are very cleverly making that somewhat transparent so it doesn't look like the phone is any bigger.. but damn.. that's HUGE.

But in all seriousness, you gotta agree this is one of the most original and innovative accessories we have seen for Note 2 so far. Also, making case longer has its advantage to lower your grip for index finger to have more room to control the pad. What I would add to this since micro-usb connection already in place, a built-in external battery and to offer a custom case with some bumper/lip protection.
I keep coming back to this to figure out what problem it solves. with one hand I can reach just about everywhere on the screen that I would under normal non-gaming solutions.
Just not the right product for me.
But if you only have 3 fingers or something, great idea!
For those who are curious, this is basically the answer to the Pantech Vega 6, a korean only phone. I'm sort of surprised something like this came out so soon for the Note II, here it is. You may see more similar stuff like this being common as phones get larger and larger.
