Other than the build quality, what kind of differences could there be between an original samsung mhl cable and a chinese cheapie?
Are there any features other than the tv-out that the samsung one provides?

what cable should i be looking to buy for the MHL to HDMI converter. As in is there a specific brand that is going to be better quality then another? Being that the one offered through verizon is Ibolt and not a OEM product.

I purchased the Samsung HDMI/MHL adapter and it works, I don't know if the quality is any better then other brands (no ground for comparison).
I've been using the one from Monoprice. I haven't had any problems with it.
I noticed that the Note 2 has a Smart dock with HDMI out and 3 usb ports, does anything like this exist for the "One"
Here is the one I am talking about for Samsung from Samsung:

I just bought a dock, andan MHL adapter off ebay. I already have an alarm clock with a micro-usb dock by my bed for charging, so I was going to use these to make a multimedia dock for my TV. You can power the MHL adapter so that it draws less power from the phone, but as far as I know it can't actually charge the phone.
Since my account is new, I can't post links, here are the item IDs for the ebay items:
dock: 390581350505
MHL adapter: 161009409501

Nothing quite like that dock, and I doubt it will be possible to have a dock like that with the One given I believe it uses a standard 5-pin MHL configurations, whereas the S3/Note 2 and S4 all use an 11-pin configuration (that Samsung specifically added to allow simultaneous USB OTG and MHL).
anything new about this? has anyone found some usb hub that has micro usb and normal usb out, so you could connect mhl to microusb, and lets say mouse and keyboard to other 2 usb ports.
I recently bought an MHL cable from amazon.com and was trying to use it on my galaxy s3 . I was using CyanogenMod and I was told to go to back to TouchWiz because AOSP does not support MHL. I did that and I still can't get video or audio to my television . Could it be an issue with the cable I bought? It's not officially from Samsung but it had pretty good overall reviews also do I have to use a TouchWiz ROM or should I revert back to the stock Samsung ROM to test it that way?
Link to the one I bought....

Have you connected a charger to the adapter?
Yes I did, it provided a cable that connected to the wall outlet, had to provide my own power source there. Should it completely work on all TW based roms? It could have been defective, as there are some negative reviews for that reason.
Has anyone got MHL to VGA working with the M8? I had a MHL to VGA and it doesn't work at all... Not entirely sure why, though the cable was described by the vendor's website as Galaxy S2 Adaptor, though MHL is a standard across Android. Any ideas?
