Lately the phone started to light itself on every ~2 minutes or sometimes it stops for a while and randomly does it again.
I usually place it next to my TV desk or on my computer one, is that the cause? If so, is it in any way harmful?

maybe some app is running in background......
maybe because of some background apps
Like the two people above me said check which apps are running in the background. I don't really know much, but maybe Better Battery Stats app will help. It's in the market. I use it to check which apps keep waking up my device and preventing it to deep sleep, thus draining battery.
Well I press the Home button a few times and even open the Task Manager to see if anything is running and there's nothing. :s
Task manager doesn't show apps running in the background.

Goto
Settings>> Applications>>Running Services
there you will find all the apps running in background
check which application(not stock core applications ) are running end any third party app and see if it helps
Install better battery status and check the partial wakelogs to know which app is conflicting

Thanks everyone. I think there was some left out stuff I forgot to end.

Is there an app or something that actually tells me what is running I. The background? I'm currently using automatic task killer but I feel that it only kills somethings and not all.

try system panel. or taskiller
Why do you want to kill the apps? Android will stop them for you if it needs the memory. Hitting the back button at the bottom of your phone should exit you out of the app you're currently in.
What do you have running in the background that's killing your phone so bad?

Autostarts is a good paid app. Prevents certain apps from ever starting automatically.

Love autostart.. cheap and on cm6 with stock root I hit 1903 on quad. Also I removed alot of stuff. Almost barebones then installed my 28 apps. Still get average 1800s. +1 for autostart.

You can back out to exit but doesn't shut down the app when you are done with it. Stays in the background. Developers need to start putting close or exit on apps to close and shut down the app instead of leaving it in background. There is 3 parts.. background..foreground.. and cached..

The back button closing apps is a large myth for most apps. Some are coded that way but not all. As for the other post about AutoStarts, it is a great app for root users. Just be careful. However, 2.2 is great by itself about managing apps and resources on its own without a 3rd party task killer. I use AutoKiller to tweak Android's own task manager to kill off items sooner. Just because you see an app running does not mean it is using battery or hogging resources. Android is not a Windows device.
Sent from my iPhone with the bigger Gee Bees.
Well the reason I'm asking is because, I am rooted with 2.2 But I still get horrible battery consumption. I thought it might have been all the background apps still running or on standby. I used taskkiller myself but i really don't see a difference.

Good info on the back button. I always thought that worked for some applications. I don't see how force closing an application can be good for your phone though anymore than force closing a program is great for your computer. But I'm not totally familar with the OS on our phones.
But my understanding about the OS is that it will shut down apps on it's own in case it needs the memory right? And, to your points just having apps open won't necessarily drain the battery.
OP, how's your reception. It's also my understanding that having poor reception will drain your battery worse too. Are you running GPS, wireless, or services that use those resources?
Not at all, I don't even have Bluetooth on. And using system tools I can see that before killing any background apps the phone is using 63% memory when killing the apps its reduced to 42%

+1 for system panel. This will tell you not only what processes are running, but will also tell you how much battery and CPU they use (and have used over the past X hours). It's invaluable when trying to find the rogue process that's sapping up your battery.

I don't know why there should be any problem with killing an app or service through the app manager. I do it frequently. At first I did encounter unexpected results but these are less now as I become more familiar.
I wondered, though, is there a preferred order of stopping and clearing data/cache through the app manager (in 2.2)?
I didn't know there was background/forground/cache difference: in froyo, it appears to me that app manager shows all of those under "running"--is that correct? Also, you can look at services. If a service (calendar, talk, etc.) is running, for example, it could be an obvious thing to stop if you aren't using it. You will see if you log out of the service first, and then check the service list, that it might remain running.
I think when you re-start the device very little starts with it. You can use that as a baseline.
Playing games online realtime is probably the biggest power hog I've found. I sometimes cannot play for even 15 min.
Other days, the device holds juice for more than 24 hrs.
The signal strength seems to be the main variable in my experience. The phone signal strength makes a difference, so does 3G, and 4G even more. It's like there's a threshhold or a revolving time--sorry, I don't know the right term here--but the device goes round and round searching if it thinks some signal is out there or if you trigger an app that calls for it. OTOH, once the device really finds nothing at all it drops everything. It shuts down entirely and you get really great battery life
Hi
I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this. I have been monitoring my battery life closely on a stock unrooted phone. Everytime I check my battery level in the Phone status I also check the Battery use screen to see which app is currently taking up the most juice.
On two occasions, I have found apps that I closed before and are no longer in the task manager, still on the list. One was reckless getaway and the other is web. Both were closed in task manager. The first time it happened with reckless getaway, I rebooted my phone and it was gone. Now I do not want to have to reboot my phone everytime I see an app that I closed still running in the background. As for the web app, I have force stopped it and refreshed, but it is still on the list.
Can anyone advise me on how to get rid of these apps that linger on the battery use screen even though they do not appear on the task manager?
Thanks
Try juice defender app

These apps might start up as a service and cannot be closed via task manager. Go to settings applications running and look for it there

They are on the screen because that screen reports "use percentage" and those apps used the battery. They don't necessarily have to be currently active.

Thanks.
That would explain it. If that is the case, the best way to monitor rogue apps would be to install juice defender? because the battery use screen would not be accurate since it shows all apps that used up battery life.
I recently installed two apps from the App Store both by Disney. I noticed on the Settings/Battery screen that both apps are using 21% battery when playing and 10% when not playing. When I tried to Force Stop I noticed that both kept using about 10% percent battery power. I thought that the Force Stop actually stopped the app from using the phones resources. I even tried using Advanced Task Killer which also failed to completely stop the app from consuming the system resources. The only sure why to stop them was to uninstall them, which sucks because they were fun games to play.
My question is what's the point of Force Stop if it doesn't actually stop the app and how do you stop an app from running without uninstalling?
The force stop is just like an end task in Windows.. it just kills the current task.. it does not mean stop it forever. If the app is called again it will start up again...
Now there are apps that are automatically called if the are stooped, mainly service type tasks, but there are some bad / misbehaving apps out there for sure.
This type of behavior is why taskkillers can actually cost you more battery usage, because the app is always having to start-up again and why with the current revision of Android - Gingerbread on up it is not recommend to use them.. the kernel is best at managing resources.
The main question is why is the Disney app running all them time? I'd bet it has some suspicious permission and is phoning home quite often... I wouldn't run it at all with that kind of behavior..
After you force stop those apps, are you resetting the battery list by charging to full again? Cause those percentages will still appear in the usage list even after you stopped them because that data was already collected. You'd have to start the tracking over at that point.

Thanks for the reply, how do I start the tracking over? I have the phone at 100% charge and it's still there but instead of taking 10% now it shows 2%. I tried several times to restart the count and every time the game app comes back showing that it's using battery.
I've attached three screen shots so you can see what I'm talking about. The three screens shots are of Disneys app Temple Run: Brave. The first is just after I closed the game app, the second is after I Force Stopped the game app and the third is after charging my phone 100%, disconnecting the charger and resetting the battery status. The app starts up again and uses about 2% which I can't stop it unless I uninstall the app. It does go away if I reboot the phone itself but who wants to restart there phone just to close an app?
I also have installed another Disney game app Where's my Perry and is similar except when I restart the battery app it doesn't start up again until I play the game app.

Hmmm well you're pretty much doing exactly what I suggested. I don't know what that app could be doing. I'd need to see a system panel screen shot of maybe an hour or 2 collection of data monitoring to get a better idea. It must be running a service. If you go to settings, apps, running apps, does it appear there? And even after you force stop it? That list only shows running services, not activities. Does it show up there?

I'm not sure what's going on with the app. I've attached two more screen shots. To answer you questions No it doesn't appear to be running on the Running apps page and yes it was showing that it was Force Stopped.
Is there a way that I can collect data to see what the app is doing? Does my phone have to be rooted, bootloader unlocked, etc?
Oh by the way you've been Thanked. :good:
Yesterday i installed CM 10.1.3 from official cyanogenmod site. First few hours i had big battery drain and i saw that the phone isn't going into DEEP SLEEP but only at 384 MHz. I thought that some app is staying on even with locked screen so i downloaded Clean Master and set it to kill apps when screen is off and also i clicked on "don't keep activities" from dev.options menu.
I discovered one bug on this rom - the NFC cannot shut down, is it possible to stay at 384 MHz just because my NFC is always on? If not, give me some suggestion please

Get rid of clean master. Get gsam and cpuspy from playstore. Sounds like you have cpuspy or something similar.....but gsam can tell you what is keeping your device awake. Then you can deal with it....or search on the app keeping device awake and find fix.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I don't know if NFC would prevent deep sleep, or if clean master would help ( I'd uninstall it ), but I've spent a lot of time researching battery life fixes, so here's some tips:
1. Get the Better Battery Stats app - it's essential. You're most likely going to look under the Partial Wakelocks section from the dropdown. That'll help you narrow down which apps are keeping the device awake. Kernel Wakelocks are important too, but require some research into what stuff means. Select your reference point ( Boot, Unplugged, etc. ), then try to avoid using your phone for a couple of hours from that event at least before checking this app to get better results of what's causing issues.
2. After finding which apps are problematic, you can uninstall them, freeze them, or do the following if you prefer to keep using them without hurting your battery as much:
Install Greenify and hibernate the problematic apps. Hibernating an app prevents it from running unless you start it.
For extra measure, also get ROM Toolbox ( not sure if you need the pro version ), go to "Auto Start Manager", and uncheck certain things for apps ( like Facebook auto starting on location change, for example ) to lessen app wakelocks. You can also use the paid AutoStarts app in the market with the red car icon if you prefer something simpler.
**Note: disabling certain autostarts can break a function of an app, or the whole app, until you enable it again, so be wary of that**.
3. I don't believe this is even an issue anymore, but some roms had issues going into deep sleep on multi-core devices. Eugene373's CPU Sleeper should fix that. I haven't looked into this much though, so not sure whether it works or not.
4. I found this thread on the Skyrocket forums really useful when my phone was losing battery while charging: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1759541 .
Also, to save more battery, keep your screen at dimmest system brightness when you can, and turn off sync, data, & WiFi if you don't need it. GPS *should* be okay on all the time, because from what others say, GPS only wastes battery if an app is using it, so if you deal with the app, the GPS is fine.
tl:dr;
Not sure if NFC prevents sleep or if clean master helps. Use Better Battery Stats to find wakelocks. Use Greenify to hibernate problem apps. Use ROM Toolbox's "Auto Start Manager" or AutoStarts to stop problem apps from auto starting.
Oh....another long time habit I have is to reboot after you unplug from charger....every time! This used to be a common fix.....and I still do it.

I tried your trick but it didn't work
Anyway, i downloaded GSAM Battery Monitor and also Greenify. I stayed like 1 hour and after that i opened GSAM and there was information that my battery drain is caused of Media Service. "Downloads" system app is working in background and it is preventing my phone to get into Deep Sleep. I tried to add downloads system app into Greenify but for this thing i need to get paid version .. anyway, i will not pay it
What to do now, at least now i know why i cannot enter in deep sleep - because of downloads system app ^_^

Titanium backup can convert any system app to a user app. Then greenify will see them. The catch 22 may be that it only works on titanium backup pro version. LOL
But check and see!

My note3 also had a deep sleep lack this week. The culprit was Clean Master itself. Probably they messed up something with the last update. Beware.
no matter what phone ive ever had, ive never gotten battery life like aot of you guys do. i dont know how you do IT but ive given up trying.. Even . even with roms i cant. i am on stock wiht note 2 and it is so bad that i can unplug and not touch my phone and it goes to 90 percent with the screen off within 20 minutes . i have sync gps wireless and bluetooth off. and my screen goes black in 10 seconds. one thing is when i go to running programs it shows alot so i use the broom to clean it and then when i check back to ruining programs a minute after, there are lots of apps open again. even things like word with friends that of course wouldn't be open if i didn't open it. have you heard of this/. or is it normal? would you suggest a hard reset? any suggestions would be appreciated. im not as savvy with flashing roms on here as i was with early phones so id prefer to say on stock. thanks so much
jeff
Phones aren't the same each one is different. What battery performance I get may not be the same as you as our chips etc may run slightly different.
With that said, the biggest influence over battery performance is the kernel. I run saber kernel 42.4 and get 1% loss per hour with the screen off.
Of course you can try that kernel and see how it works for you. There are a lot of tips threads in these forums but I would advise you to turn off tts any and all sounds on your phone, by that I mean keyboard sounds etc.
Then you need to download better battery stats and greenify. The first will tell you what apps are eating your battery and the second will let you force close the app until you restart it.
