Battery drains extremely fast because of mobile data - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi My Friends ,
when I use mobile data networking ( GSM & HSPA ) it drains so fast , cant i just go for edge , there is function for it in iphone , you can turn off or on 3g , is there any function in nexus ?
Because it drains so fast , it drains one percentile per a min , it means that battery drains in 2 hours
Google are you kidding us ?

Its not the data. Its probably what you're doing all together. Actively using data means that 1) the screen is on, which is the biggest drain and 2) the processor is actively running, which is the 2nd biggest drain.
If you want to switch to EDGE only, go to Settings > More... > Mobile networks > "Use only 2G networks"
You'll still get about the same battery drain because the screen will still be on, and the processor will still be working. Any savings you get from slower data will probably be wasted by keeping the screen on longer to complete the task.
I'm assuming you just got the phone? Use it regularly for a few days and stop watching your battery % and you'll be fine. Checking your battery just drains more battery...

Believe me i have been doing nothing , and it drains so much fast compared to HTC Sensation , my gf has a htc sensation and it also use 4g and we dont use it , and the result is HTC drains 2 % and mine ( galaxy nexus ) drains 17 % , we dont have any app under working , believe me this phone is the worst second thing ive ever had ( first one is Iphone 4s )

Why so resigned? maybe you have an app not playing nice and/or draining more on ICS than in a previous phone. I use my phone for heavy use and sometimes drop about 10-15% in an hour.

u know what , ive been using android for two years ( htc , samsung , lg ) and dont judge me as using this phone efficient , I have knowladge about computer and smartphone almost your age

uninstall all your apps.
check all settings of apps still on the phone.
and see if the battery is better.
often its an app that is using a lot of CPU or Data in the background causing it to never really sleep.
Maybe use CPUSpy to see if its the cpu which is causing the drain.

I have the same problem as therollingstone - I get about 6hrs of screen-on time on Wifi and 2-2.5 hours on data, nothing showing up in Battery stats tho, must have something to do with the network...

Usually its some rouge app running in the background. Management people!

Use wifi whenever possible guys. It's a lot more stable and battery efficient than using mobile data.

Looks like you might want to go back to the drawing board and spend another 2 years trying to learn Android. Surely with your vast knowledge of smartphones and computers you would have figured out the problem by now. Hint: It's you. Damn, well I gave you the answer.
In all seriousness, you are the reason for the problem. You control the apps installed. You control the permissions these apps are allowed to have. It is your job to monitor activity and make sure none are misbehaving. Don't blame Samsung, Google, or anyone else.

Antennas
Wifi
Consumes more energy per time when trasmitting than mobile data, BUT...
Takes less time to transmit data, espescially large files, so it consumes overall less energy.
Wifi scans for a connection and pings the router less often than mobile data, thus consuming less energy at idle
Bluetooth
Consumes a small amount of power at idle to connect to new devices
Scanning for deveices consumes more energy
While connected, very little energy is consumed unless data is transmitted.
GPS
Unless an application specifically invokes the GPS antenna, it will not consume power
Using constant GPS updates (as in Navigation apps) will consume a large amount of power
Some apps will have bugs in them which will keep GPS on indefinitely. Try reinstalling those applications first, then remove if necessary.
Mobile Data
2G antennas consume the LEAST amount of energy at idle, but because they take so long to trasmit data, they can kill your battery.
3G antennas are Ok at idle, but take less time to transmit data, so are the best all around for traveling around metropilitan areas.
4G Antennas are FAST, but consume the most power. Best to leave these off when in transit, and used for stationary, stable connections
All Antennas consume much more power idling in areas of bad reception. So if you know you're going somewhere with poor reception, and don't need data, turn it off until needed (Settings->Wireless&Networks ->More ->Mobile Networks-> "Data Enabled"; "Data Roming" OFF; "Use Only 2G Networks"
This is from the guide to galaxy nexus battery life

I never turn off Wifi, H+, 3G or GPS. Sometimes I forget to turn off Bluetooth after I get out of my car and just leave it on for the heck of it, that while a blue LED is blinking on all the time to notify me Bluetooth is on. It would still last me the 6-8 hours i'm away from home with regular usage of browsing, checking mail, messaging and stuff until I get back, and even then it would still have some power in it. Lasting only two hours means something is wrong and I doubt it's the data networking. Check background services and widgets refresh intervals.

48 hours of Battery life and still 45% left!!!

Hi Everyone,
I thought id share the amazing battery life im having, ive had it going for 48 hours so far and still got 45% of my battery still left, ill tell you all my set up and i wish you can get the same.
Installed LeeDroids rom (1.9a) which is absolutely amazing i must say, i love it.
Got the new radio 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2.
SetCPU running and have the normal standby on the phone at 642mhz and 245mhz when the screen is off.
I also have a task killer on set to kill most apps when the screen turns off and i have read about androids memory management but it makes me feel better when i run it and i personally think it helps.
Finally, and possibly the most important is an app called AutoKiller that interacts with androids internal memory management system and i have that set to ultimate.
I think thats it, and i have been using the phone averagely, and have turned off wifi and mobile internet and only use it when i need it.
Good luck everyone, hope this is helpful in someway.
It was interesting to read until you said this

I personally refuse to turn off internet (wifi or mobile, same thing) on my SMARTPHONE. Cmon, that is why I bought it, because of the internet, and the fun things to do on it. If I use it for calls/sms only, I would have gotten something much cheaper.
Anyway, with hard usage my battery lasts for like 20 hours, and that is enough for me. I don't mind connecting it to a charger before I fall asleep, and disconnecting it when I wake up. Still I use the 1GHz CPU and the options the phone has fully

I'll have to agree with ljesh on this. If you deprive your smartphone of internet access, you've just turned it into a feature-phone.
But, I think you should turn off WiFi when you're not using it. That's just the smart thing to do...
Is there a battery of the same size with a higher capacity?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
No, there isin't.
Just a quick update i ended up getting 63 hours out of one charge!
And i dont need to read what the weather is every 5 minutes thats the reason i dont generally keep mobile internet on... I just look up at the sky it tells me exactly what i need to know!
Well, I have tried this and wow - what a difference, lol.
I am mostly around WiFi connections all day, so just use that instead for all my syncs. Mobile internet is used when I am out of range for short periods of time.
Thanks for the tip - works wonders.

1. Turn on Airplane mode all the time and don't wake the device from standby. According to the specs, the device will last up to 340 hours (ie, over 2 weeks).
2. Leave the device completely off. It will be months before your battery completely drains.
[/sarcasm]
Don't mind me, I'm just joking around.
But seriously, it would be interesting to know the battery life of a device set to your specifications but with mobile internet on. Turning it off, just seems like cheating, similar to how CPU overclock enthusiasts achieve crazy clockspeeds with liquid nitrogen cooling. Sure, you achieved your milestone, but is that really how the device is intended to be used?

Why do you count network off as cheating. Why should it be on if you don't need it?
I am leaving network off most of the time, just switch it on when I want to surf or update my calendar/emails. Use Wifi whenever available. And SetCPU to minimize clock speed while the display is off.
Most email come from Softbank Japan thru a MMS type email application. Its a push mail system and you do not need to have network on for receiving it.
With this settings I get up to 24h, depending on who long I travel and read ebooks.
Not my intention to sound antagonistic. "Cheating" may be too strong of a word. Here's what I'm trying to say.
Obviously, it's up to the user to decide how to use the device. But what's also obvious is that the device cannot be fully utilized without an always-on connectivity.
Without an always-on connectivity, a lot of the widgets and applications instantly become useless or crippled.
Sure, not everyone uses widgets or applications that require always-on connectivity. But I'm willing to wager that a majority of the Desire user community utilizes such widgets and applications; so turning off mobile internet is just not an option for these people.

I tend to agree.
I need the network to always be on, and so leave it so - though sometimes, I will put the phone into airplane mode overnight if I remember. Generally though I don't as I usually charge overnight anyway.
On Sunday night though, I'd charged the phone during the day and so didn't charge overnight. I used the phone quite heavily during the day, and in the evening watched about 3 hours worth of DivX video via RockPlayer. My phone complained of less than 15% charge after 26 hours, which to me was quite impressive given my usage, and I don't use *any* tweaks such as SetCPU or a task killers (which are placebos anyway).
Personally, if I can get a full day from my phone I'm happy - and I can do that with the Desire without having to do anything.
Regards,
Dave

How to reduce battery drain while using rom?

Hi. Battery drain in sleep mode is really good. Around 0.5 % an hour. But when using 3g internet, battery drain is massive, around 3% per minute. My friend was using his iPhone with similar usage to mine, his drained from 75% to 50%, mine drained from 73% to 20%!
I have brightness on low, GPS and Bluetooth off, and I am using radio 26.13.04.19 which is one that I have found to be good and reliable. Is there anyway to reduce my drain? It's way too much right now. Thank you!

3% per minute while screen is off means your phone isn't going into sleep mode.
I guess there's an app that keeps your 3G modem active.

No, I think you misunderstand. 3% per minute while using my phone (ie: when screen is on). Like I said, when screen is off, drain is only 0.5% per hour.
Try to switch to EDGE, I had it too before. The drain was caused by a bad and cell tower signal. By switching to EDGE the signal went better, same as the battery drain. Only uses 3G if you're signal/reception is good(above 3 bars).
you can turn off Wifi GPS BT and of course the screen brightness .
iyou need to activate sleep mode beacuse when in this mode you almost dont have battery drain ....

Jesus. I just spent 1 minute on facebook and had 4% battery drain! Using mobile network (getting 3 bars of 3g signal). Why does android have to do this to me. I'm jealous of iphone battery life
2-3% per minute during 3g session is pretty normal ,even I am having the same drain ,I have spent months and tried all the tricks in the book (uv script ,reduce CPU speed)to reduce the drain all my efforts have gone down the drain I think we have to live up with this sort of drain...

BT,GPS and WIFI is always on. cellular data is on WCDMA preffered. under volted, under clocked and even low vibration mod. screen brightness is at 10%. still drains at 3% per min when using the data. i've got a brand new battery from HTC service centre during this time and it doesnt help. i even started to think that my charging circuit was screwed up :|
got really paranoid..
but i guess the battery drain is pretty normal given the battery capacity
There are some build.prop tweaks that you could try. Related to sleep mode and hsdpa power collapse. Look through this page and add whichever are network and battery saving related (mentioned). Look through your current /system/build.prop and only add what isn't already there. If it's already there, just change the values.

To save my battery I have started to use Tasker, this is a profile manager. For example You can set up your phone to switch On Data and sync your apps every 30 min or more, instead of have it On all the time. There is a lot of options to set up your phone. For me it is working great and it helped me to lower daily battery drain. You can find other Profile Managers on Google Shop.

That doesn't help with the 3% per minute while awake.
And switching data on every 30 minutes often means that you can forget using apps like whatsapp and viber. Most of the time people rely on messages arriving shortly after they were sent.
Image your boyfriend/girlfriend sitting outside in the car and texting you "hurry up! we need to go!!" and you get that message 30 minutes later....
And consider using Llama....it's mostly the same as tasker but free
There is an app called battery calibration that can help with battery life. It helped me
Have compared battery drain with different radios? Some radios I have tried give better signal with higher drain. The M2 one I am using now gives a nice balance but it may differ for depending on your location/reception.

[Q] Constantly in a bad reception zone

When I'm at school (5 days a week) most of my classes are in a building where I do not get a lot of reception, aka, my battery gets killed by the phone to keep up the signal. I do get reception, around 1-2 bars, but that still drains the battery extremely fast. Is there any app or something that I can do to help reduce the amount of battery drain?
I don't want to put the phone into air plane mode because I can still send and receive text messages, but it's just very slow.
Have you tried putting it in cdma only mode?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
You could save a lot of battery life by either connecting to a wifi hotspot (if available) or by turning off background data. The problem your phones having is that it has to turn the gain way up on its cellular radio in order to transmit and receive data. By reducing the amount of background data usage (or off loading it to another network with better signal--i.e. wifi) you'll save a lot of juice.
If you can't do either, there are some things you can do with Tasker to reduce data usage to windows of time instead of always on. May be something to consider.

Battery life without data on?

Hello there I'm looking for a reasonably priced unlocked Android phone to take abroad with me this coming fall. I won't be using data services so that being said, how long would the battery be expected to last with moderate to high usage? (good bit of texting, some calls/pictures, and some wifi Web browsing). Thanks! Searched around and couldn't find this bit of information.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
How are you expecting to make calls? If you literally only have a voice-only SIM when you're there and you'll be using the phone heavily on WiFi, the battery life won't be drastically better than if you were on mobile data. The screen is the largest drain on the phone, and if you're still using data over WiFi you'll maybe get to 2 days of usage on a stock phone.

There's an option in settings to turn off data. You still get voice, you don't need to turn on airplane mode or get a voice-only sim.
But I agree, battery won't be drastically better, I have data turned off and my batt times have been similar to the average times posted here

Yes I know you can turn off data . I asked how he intends to make calls because if he will actually have a SIM in and connecting to towers for calls, battery life will not be drastically better than if he had data turned on. If, however, he was making VOIP calls over WiFi with airplane mode on, he'd likely see a large improvement in battery life.

Yeah I realize keeping the antenna on will consume battery...I would probably be surfing the Web on wifi for 30 minutes to an hour max each day. Should I look at getting the extended battery? As long as I can get a full day (18-24 hours) with moderate to high usage I'm fine.

But yes, the "advanced" settings on WiFi are a bit finnicky for people. I've noticed that they don't always stick. Just gotta try toggling it a few times over and over.

You think wifi consumes more juice than cellular radios do? or do you shut those down as well?

I know it does because my battery lasts longer when I manually shut off wifi.
Wifi will never consume more battery than the cellular radio.

Wifi consumes more battery idling. 3g consumes more battery surfing.

Over a whole day's use, if you're on WiFi the whole time you'll use less battery then if you're on the mobile network. The idle battery use is higher but your time connected to transfer data (and therefore battery used) is much much lower.
idling in 2g saves allot more battery than Wi-Fi
Turning off the phone is the best battery saver. But everyone knows wifi is the best option if you have it. 3g runs your battery down way faster. Even though most people have known this for yrs, its even in the tips section when you go into your sprint account. "Wifi to save battery" or something like that.
I use juice defender to turn off all radios when the screen is off. WiFi and 3g will pop back on within seconds of the screen being back on. I know not everyone finds juice defender useful, but I love it
