Girlfr = Hitler - Windows Phone 7 General

Not sure if this has been posted yet, didn't turn up in a search.
I was texting a friend and had typed out "girlfr." I hesitated because I noticed the third spelling suggestion didn't look anything like the others. Turns out it's "Hitler." Funny coincidence, or was one of Microsoft's keyboard engineers going through a difficult breakup?

WTF!! Lol u should proly talk yo Microsoft about that.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda premium

I'm sure it has to do with key positioning, and compensating for user mistakes.
g is 1 key away from h
i is the same key
r is 1 key away from t
l is the same key
f is 1 diagonally away form e
r is the same key
It is funny though.

Go mis type "wife" a few times, then "exwife", then "divorce" and "alimony". Should be a riot.

Well, it's the 3rd suggested word, not first.
But, as a conspiracy theory, this "feature" may be useful to prevent girlfriend from becoming wife / exwife which will save you alot of money in the long run.
Might not even matter, since no one cared about the president's middle name. I suppose being called it is different than judging someone else for their name though.

Hahah, love that kind of stuff

I've never seen the contraction "girlfr" used before, so it's not that odd to me. Makes sense. The letters are close.

1 Week of the Desire, A few pointers.

Hey,
Okay so I've had the desire for around a week now and thought I would post a few points which I think are relevant, sort of like a mini review. I came from a G1 and therefore this isn't my first taste of android.
The Software
The software performs so much better on this phone than Android ever did on the G1 (even after the various amount of hacks, patches etc to try and get it to go faster). The 1ghz processor definitely makes a difference as applications are loaded up instantly, web pages load fast (and almost instant) on 3G and movies run perfectly.
The Screen
Most people have noted a pink tint on the screen and I'm not going to lie to you, this does exist however, don't let this put you off from getting the screen. The AMOLED is truly beautiful, bright and colourful and blacks really are black (I was waiting for a youtube video to load and thought the screen had gone off it's that black). While there are pink tones (especially in Google Mail) they're not really that noticeable and only seem to show on a certain shade of grey, it's the sort of thing that wont bother you unless you want it to.
The Keyboard
The keyboard is truly magical! Seriously, I never ever hit the right key yet the predictive text always seems to know what I want to type. It also seems to be a multitouch keyboard and I can type fairly quickly on it, almost as quick as I could with the QWERTY on the G1.
Voice to Text
Voice to text is quite accurate even with my Brummie-British accent however, it's not installed by default. It should be however, expect it in a rom update very soon.
The Battery
Although everyone else may not be, I'm very impressed. Lasts around 1.5-2 days which is double what my G1 ever lasted. This is with heavy usage, bluetooth usage and even live wallpapers.
Anything else I think of I'll add, if anyone has any questions feel free to ask
gratz mate, seems like you might be one of those lucky guys whos phones were not faulty at all lol
I came from the HTC Hero and agree with all of the above.
A lot has been said of the screen but I certainly don't notice the pink on the screen. I'm not even convinced it is there! A lot of the negative comments seem to be coming from people who have never seen a Desire but have, in my opinion, been mislead into thinking that it is a serious problem. I don't think it will be an issue for 99% of users.
To me the screen is far, far superior to that of the Hero.

Hi,
Do you have a Desire or are you one of the mislead?
Thanks Brummiesteven
Hopefully this time next week, I will be emailing FedEx/Customs (I really do not know who it is) to have my phone released to me. Definitely appreciate the review. Glad to know that the whole "pinkish tint" issue really isn't that bad
I agree too. Got my phone last Saturday and have loved using it since. Other than the weather app occasionally needing to be manually updated I've not had any problems. It's a nice change from S60 5th my Samsung on I8910.
Totally agree! In fact, you just wrote half of the text for my review =]
One thing I'd correct is re: keyboard. Since I'm not a native English speaker, I have text prediction turned off as I need to type in Lithuanian too. I hit the right keys with 99% accuracy (or so it seems) and I can confirm that it's just as good as using full QWERTY on G1.
Thanks for sharing your views.
It was all going fine till you mentioned it understanding brummie, c'mon

Hey brummie, thx for the review! I'd appreciate if you could answer some questions concerning long-time usage:
- Has the limited space for apps been a problem so far? I don't plan on installing more than 1 game, but still...
- Also, is there lag/slowdown on normal usage or after a few days? My WM6.1 phone is really laggy and I don't want to buy a laggy phone again...
Oh, and also concerning the keyboard: How hard is it to really hit the right keys? (I write alot in Swiss German, and there aren't even printed dictionaries for it )
Thanks!

Limited space hasn't been a problem so far, only 72 apps atm though (including stock apps) and only 21.40mb avaliable =/.
No lag/slowdown after a few days, you don't get this with android fullstop. My G1 was never off (as in shutdown or restarted, and neither is the desire).
It's not hard to hit the right keys, I just have fast thumbs and type at (approx) 75wpm on the phone. If I go slower I hit the correct key everytime.
I don't think the reviewer meant that the keyboard was hard to type with - he was just impressed that if you use it with elbows or toes or whatever it'll do a good job working out what you were going for.
It is certainly on a par - if not better than the iPhone, which is a credit to HTC. It's obvious that it has shook up the Apple house - they are running scared hence the gazillion unwarranted lawsuits have slung (a la toys out of play pen) in HTCs direction (I mean - swipe to unlock - c'mon!)
[edit] you just beat me to it! lol

anyone have an idea what happens with words added by the user to the dictionary? in symbian there was about 250 words allowed or something like that and later they were getting wiped or at least my nokia did wipe them :S
There's a user dictionary for your own words but no idea if any get deleted. Can't see any reason why they would, I dont have many myself to test though.

can you add new words as you type a message or you have to go into the dictionary and add them there?
the reason why they got deleted is probably my phone is messed up, every now and then i cant send texts unless i reinstall the software, so no more nokias for me

Flash
Hi all.
Got my Desire from Virginmobile UK today. Great phone.
Tried to play a video on the BBC website & got a message saying that the phone is not compatible. I was under the impression that Flash compatibility existed with this ROM. No ?

Crazy lag??

Omg guyz are you guys getting this 1.3453379 millisecond lag when you push the home button? It's sooo annoying omg.
This phone sucks! I'm taking it back. Get this...I asked it to make coffee for me this morning, and it just laid there doing nothing!! What a POS!
Seriously people, this is what you guys complaining about stupid things sound like. I have a feeling the people complaining are either 13 years old, or have absolutely no life.
This phone is awesome in every way possible. The screen is HUGE, bright and bold. The colors are vibrant. The GPS locks in almost immediately. The speed is fast. It does have a slight lag when you push the home button but it's literally a millisecond long. Who the hell cares?
If you're on the fence about the phone, go and get it...NOW!

I was thinking about this myself yesterday. There's a line of tolerance that you have to set for yourself with these things. Sometimes I think that it's not that the people don't like the phone, it's that they are having the "grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" mentality. In the end of the day it's just a phone!

we went through this same crap when the sensaion came out. people were like this phone is such a piece of crap cause i ordered waffles and the waitress brought me eggs....i feel your pain most of these people with this phone will go away once development kicks off for this awesome device. I know its hard but try to ignore the stupid posts and they usually go away.
Is it possible that the home screen button lag is because double tapping home opens the touchwiz "voice talk" feature, and the phone hesitates for a fraction of a second incase it's a double tap? Do other non-tmobile SGSII's have this feature and behave the same way?
good point blue biscuit!!
Good call, can't wait to be able to remove that feature with CM7 (at least re-map it). If you guys want a nice sign of speed go to the gallery. I'm blown away at how fast all the images just drop into the gallery when you load it. Maybe that's just me though, coming from the HD2 with android...
With new phones comes new complaints and true they will go away once the phone has been out for a while. I really think people just need a way to vent. I got this phone and it didn't have siri. The phone looked like an iphone but didn't have itunes. Irritating but it's as easy as just ignore their posts.
Seriously people, if you have a problem just ask for help. Starting a new thread to ***** and moan is not going to solve the problem. If you get no help here and want to return it. Do it queitly and move on. Now I'm going back to playing with my phone. It's going to be making me lunch in a little bit and I don't want to miss that. This thing makes great eggs.

Very good question. The home button lag is odd and seems deliberate, no?
Regardless, there is no question this phone is slower than the other SGS II.

Speech to Text

I unfortunately own the dreaded bugged Dell Venue Pro. On the plus side though, I have gotten to experience the amazing WinMo7 OS. I love it. I will stick with it when I move on to the next phone and just avoid the con-artists known as Dell.
With that said, one of the very few things that has let me down with WinMo7 and the Mango update, is the speech to text feature. I find it ridiculously inaccurate. I would say it works at about a 5% success rate and is so far off most of the time it is comical.
I was curious if everyone else is having great success with this feature or if it is just me (could be something with my voice or even could just be another bug with the Venue Pro Microphone). Would like to hear how the feature is working for everyone else. Thanks.
English is not my native langauge but it get most of my speech correct. So I have no problem with it.

First of all, as a sidenote, it's Windows Phone, not Windows Mobile. Anyways, text to speech worked pretty well the few times I used it. I noticed that the more clear I speak, the better it recognizes what I say. So no dialects, no mumbling.. I barely use it since I couldn't figure out how to use punctuation so it's kinda useless for me.
i was very excited about this at first, until I ran into the same problem. i keep using it occasionally, hoping it will get it right this time... but anything over 2 or 3 words and it always messes something up. i'm even sure to speak slowly and clearly. all it needs to do is mess one word up and its pointless. if i have to go in and correct something, that ends up taking longer than had i just typed in the first place.
Don't u mean windows phone. Also the dell venue pro is great with mango update, but that doesn't erase their past. Speech to text works well enough for me. Not sure what ur doing wrong but I don't have the big problems u state
Sent from my Venue Pro using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Yeah... Im not sure what the deal is. I don't have a lisp or anything like that .
Does anyone know if the core of the speech to text is shared with the music recognition feature also? Because that thing is buggy as hell to. For a while I would try to use it on songs and it would come back empty. I was starting to think that they just didnt have those songs in their library. But, then when a song was unrecognized, I would switch over to Shazam. Shazam would indicate what the song was, and if I clicked the Zune icon with in the app, it would take me right to the song in the Zune marketplace, so obviously the problem wasnt that they didn't 'carry' that song.
Other than when I have to use the phone to have it 'listen' and recognize what is being played or said, the OS is AMAZING.
In all honesty, I find the clearer and more diss-tinkt-lee I speak, the less it picks up.
It'll be something like this:
Me: Text (wife)
Phone: texting (wife)
Me: Want, to, get, pizza, tonight?
Phone: Went you bet pizza to knight. You can say send or start over.
Me: Start over.
Me: Wanna get pizzatonight
Phone: Wanna get pizza tonight
I kid you not, it picks up all the "gonnas" and what not. However for things longer than two sentences, it's a crap shoot.
-edit-
My guess is they purposely coded it to pick up more natural sounding speech patterns.
My favorite is when it takes everyday words and censors them because it thinks you drop so 4 letter bombs.
Example:
To Wife: You looked like a million dollars tonight.
What she gets: You looked like a *#&$&#@! tonight.
Goes over real well...
Works for me okay! I like it when its reading texts with "x's" at the end it reads "kisses" its so funny
sure haven't said:

I'll have to try this.. I wonder if it's true. I was getting frustrated, it seemed like the more deliberate I was the more it ****ed with me.
and I don't get you guys who are saying 'it works good enough'. it either works or doesn't, no? if it doesn't say what you want then it's useless.
I don't bother with speech to text, but what I miss from the old WM 6.5 was MS Voice Command. You can ask "what time is it?"; "what call did I missed?"; "what appointment do I have?", etc.. It would event alert my upcoming appointment by voice! I don't get why MS scraped that and gave us this handicapped voice thing. Why let Apple get all the credit for siri when Voice Command was able do 80% of that 4 years ago?
Don't give Siri too much credit, it was down for hours today....anywho, mine is 90% accurate...sometimes it amazes me that it picked up what I said, but occasionally it will translate some crazy stuff lol.

my last two messages contained 'soon though i'm a' which was turned into 'sonoma'. SERIOUS?
and then 'eleven' it interpreted as 'lesson'. wrong amount of syllables, not even close.

"soon though I'm a", what was the rest of your sentence? If it was something like "I'm a be at John's house", then that might be your problem. I wouldn't think that urban slang is coded in, making it think you meant something else.
Essentially, Tellme has gotten pretty good for American/British & Aussie accents.
I'm Chinese & my voice is of a higher pitch so Tellme only got it right 50% & assuming the Auto-gain on the Trophy or my Bluetooth headset doesnt attenuate my voice too much.
A Kiwi I know also have the same problem but you know what? It's a lot better now compared to a year ago & the key is to speak naturally.
It's actually working amazingly well for me which is surprising since I have an Australian accent. I find it strange that it's not working too well for you.
Eg, I said 'I'll meet you at the park in 30 minutes but I'll also be stopping for lunch on the way' and it came out as 'I'll meet you at the park in 30 minutes but I'll also be stopping for lunch on my way'. I actually said this quickly (normal conversation speed), and it came out almost perfect. Even with the error (if you could even call it that) the sentence still made perfect sense..
I've found that the slower and clearer i speak the worse it is.
If i just speak normaly to it, it gets it pretty good.
i wonder if this is the issue for me?
are the phone sold with an accent filter?
I'm an Aussie but i live in the UK and i bought my mobile through O2. is there a way to tell the phone to "listen" for an Aussie accent?
I don't think we need something like Siri on WP7, it's a gimmick imo.

it's marketed as a gimmick but there's no doubt its a useful feature. its capabilities are way beyond Tellme where you have to start off with 1 of only 4 keywords to start an action. i'll give it another few years though until anyone puts out a voice system that is truly useful and accurate.
i will give siri extra credit though.. my brother was messing around with it, and even when he gave commands it wouldn't recognize, it would exactly repeat what he said no matter how bizarre or quick he would talk. i'd imagine it must work well for voice to text.

Is HTC Sense a potential threat to your phone?

Hi all,
I was just wandering, is Sense a threat to your phone? For example, you're in a very important meeting that decides your future, then suddenly, somebody phones you. Then you're like "Oh Crap!" so you flip your phone over, therefore silencing the call. Then an hour later, the meeting finishes. You've either gotten promoted and now you got a high-paying role, or things go South, and you either get de-promoted or stick with your current role, or you just get fired. So you look at your phone, to ring back the nuisance that called you. To make a long story short, you scream. You slouch against a wall and cry in despair. You flipped your phone over with a bit of force. You screen is cracked/smashed/scratched. So now, depending on your current role, you can get a new phone, or have no phone, or just a cheap Nokia. But either way, you liked your HTC a lot.
So, what do you guys think. Have you been in a situation like this. For example, your phone thought you had pockets that were bigger on the inside, and rang quite loud; and you were in your holy place of worship, making matters even worse and quite embarrassing.
So, is HTC Sense a life saving feature, or a terrible feature?
PS: Somebody think of a more effective word then terrible.
Keep holding volume down button till it goes WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY down to vibrate. Done.
btw, how do u have android "3.3" on ur WFS?
Is sense a threat? No. In those scenarios it'd be peoples stupidity for not putting their phone on silent.

This post actually has no point!
HTC Sense gives you the Options to disable those features if you don't want them! Simple as that! You have a Smartphone in your hands not a cheap Nokia! lol
There is also a Hidden Feature inside the Sense Rom which if you actually find it then your HTC phone will kill you! Who's that for a threat?
Don't get me wrong I'm just saying the truth!
Its all the users fault. People at school get their phones taken up, only because they wernt smart enough to use the silent mode or turn the phone off. not htcs fault
Dude, how hard do you flip over your phone during meetings!?
sense not bad; just a bit bloated

I still don't believe the 3.3 and you cracking a phone's screen by turning it around. XD
Android and Sense destroyed my life
Android and Sense destroyed my life
The most disgusting thing in Sense and all launchers is that you can easily switch homescreens by swyping a finger.
I was a very rich man and used to have like 7 women at once. I have 16 children and never had to pay child support because of my women did not know each other.
I paid an agency giving me alibis and stuff, so it would have never been revealed what I was doing.
That changed very hard when I bought my brandnew HTC Device with Android and Sense. So how?
You know, the girls like it when you set their face as wallpaper, having a widget on the homescreen to call or message them instantly and all that stuff.
So I did it for every chick on each homescreen and every girl was happy and so in love.
Well, the other day I just dropped my phone and girlfriend 7 of 7 series 2011 just catched it up, swyping with her palm over the screen. So this was the end. She called girls 1 to 6 and told them the truth. But she did not stop. She also called the 14 girls from 2009 and 2010.
Now I am a poor man. And that just because of some dumg guys of HTC integrated a feature they call "user experience"
So I will never ever buy a smartphone again - and probably will never ever have money for one either ...
Will HTC put aircon support for sense. no? I want a phone with aircon.

I still don't believe the 3.3 and you cracking a phone's screen by turning it around. XD

I'd quite like to see someone smash their phone like that.

And then i want it to short out and go "kaaputt!!!!!"
then i want smoke and fire and arcs. then iwant the phone to turn into a transformer and kill megatron. then i want it to beat up the guy who should be unloicking the wfs bootloader in htc.

Well HOX, its been a great 2 weeks..

..but you're being replaced by the Droid Pro+, a slower, uglier, bulkier phone with a low rez screen.
Even by looking at the picture, you can see how horrible the screen on the Pro is compared to the HOX but that doesnt matter. I need my phone to reply back to texts, jot down notes, and input things in my calendar and i feel that the best, and quickest way to do this would be on a phone with physical keys. Oh and it feels great to have my four menu keys back.
I dont know what it is but i just couldnt get use to the on screen keyboard. Even using different keyboards(swiftkeys, ics keyboard, thumb keyboard, etc) i just found it really frustrating. I still think the iphone has by far the best onscreen keyboard.
Anyways, im not entirely putting the HOX out of comission, I still might use it as a weekend phone but as my daily driver, I'll be using the Pro+ until Motorola releases a better version.
Oh and one more thing..I've been a Treo user for the longest time so I just think I'm just bias towards phones with physical keyboards haha

Oh Im sorry, would you like me to add a qustion mark at the end of the thread topic?
Im posting this because as much as I love this phone, im a physical keyboard guy at heart, just wondering if anyone else can relate.
The HOX is an awesome phone but im not looking for awesome, im looking for productivity...Im sure gonna miss that screen though

Swype is much better than the iphone keyboard
After going from Sony Ericsson P900 to htc tytn ii to htc touch pro, I didn't think I could ever go without physical keyboard. I was wrong. Once you get used to it, an onscreen keyboard is much faster and definitely more productive because of it.

And why is that? Cause im not praising the hox? Cause im not saying how awesome it is and how it trumps any other phone out there right now? Im not bashing the phone in anyway, im simply saying that its not for me as a daily driver. It an awesome phone and its a beautiful built phone but as a daily driver, its not ideal for me.
Like i said, im not gonna stop using it complelty, im already missing the size of that screen but as other people stated, swype makes it easier to type on? Hell i might give it a shot.

My wife had the same issue when she went from a real keyboard to an on-screen one.
However, after trying various different one we have settled on Swiftkey 3 beta and now she would never go back.
Give it a little longer and you will see the benefits, hopefully.
Have you tried the keyboard on the 9900? It is heads and tails above any other keyboard I have used the this swift key is the second best.

Nope, if you'd said all those things it would still be a pointless thread.
Today, I'm wearing odd socks and I had cornflakes for breakfast.

I suppose what you just said would make sense in a socks thread and cereal thread but this is a phone forum, hence why we're talking about phones.
I stated that this phone was hard for me to adjust to and so far, a few people have actually recommended certain keyboards to try out. They're actually being pretty helpful come to think of it.
You know what? You best just mossy on if you have nothing informative to say lol

I think you missed the part where i said i needed something that would allow me to type quickly and jot down notes, everyone else seemed to give me some input, some alternatives and even some keyboards to try for my one x and your the only one complaining about my thread..but yes, you best me on your way unless you have something useful to say.
Anyways.. ill give swype a try.. i had tried it on my HTC Evo a while ago but i wasnt a big fan of it, hopefully theyve worked out the kinks. Thanks for the feedback people, maybe I wont put the Hox down after all lol

No, because this is the XDA Developers forum, not Facebook. These forums are for interesting topics that are informative and useful, not someone's personal opinion about whether a physical keyboard is better than a software one. This forum is for that.
I don't mean to cause offence, but there are A LOT of these kind of threads.
@Op,
Another boring thread about the HOX being bad....
How many of these threads has been opened?
If you don't like it go to the machine you like to my opinion but stop cluttering the board and bother us with this BS.
Post is in the wrong section as well, if you are so full of keyboards and Droid Pro+ you should have tried XDA General section to hit a 'wider audience' with your 'experience'.
Pffff... bye!
OP, for lack of a kinder way to phrase it, and the fact it's been a long day...
Shutup.
If you want to point out serious issues, ways the community can help you with that, then by all means that is what XDA is for.
What it isn't for....is to write a tribute to your One X, saying goodbye to it because you don't like the keyboard.
You can do that in private, just hold it up and say goodbye.
enough with these stupid stupid threads, really the worst part about the HOX
its good reviews and coverage attracted too many newbies to "try" it out
you know i made too new decisions i will never ever again advice and apple fan to buy or try an android...seriously i want me, my family and my friends to enjoy it all on our own
I LOVE MY HTC ONE X

Are you deluding yourself or just not reading the responses?
And... You specified that even with 3rd party keyboards you were not happy so why would I suggest keyboards?
This thread was simply you trolling. I know it, you know it, even the people who were politely making suggestions probably knew it. What kind souls with such humility. Not me, I call it as I see it.
Yet again another pointless thread that will be closed by the mods.
If I don't like anything about ANY phone I have I don't broadcast it to the nation I try and find a solution to the problem. If I can't find one I'll live with it. No doubt there are things you don't like on your replacement, are you gonna broadcast to the world again and get another phone?
Please mods close the thread.
