[Q] Best ROM for a heavy user? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I have tried ROMS, like calkulins, unnamed, and blazer, also ive tried VCS. What is the best ROM for a heavy user. None of these did it for me, i still lost 1 percent battery every 2 to 3 minutes which is not good. I need one where i can have my screen on a lot and still not lose much battery. Is there a ROM that will give me CRAZY battery life? Or at least better than these. Help?

You arent gonna get amazing battery life right away the rom needs time to settle in. I am running strongsteves odexed rom and i can easily go through a day with battery life to spare and i am always on my phone doin something. I have tried all the roms and my favorite so far are strongsteves odexed blue and phantom hackers blazer rom. I would wait on the blazer though he is releasing a stable version tomorrow.

I'm currently stock with EL29 at the moment. I'm pretty set at waiting until CM9 releases something stable before I do anything. I have had this device for a lil over a month and had the HTC Hero before hand and remember it taking a while to achieve root and what not. But I was wondering if Sprint happens to release something before CM goes stable would I still be able to Odin to CM without problem?

It varies but I have my brightness set at about 75% and I am always on my phone either texting, going on the web, facebook, twitter youtube and I always have plenty of battery life to spare at the end of the night. One thing that is very important is always clear out apps that you are not using because some of them will update frequently and cause battery drain. Also try different kernals that makes a huge difference.

I had very good luck with StrongSteves Odexed rom. That and the blazer rom gave me the best results on my device. You should look into the new blazer rom PhantomHacker just released it is very nice and ultra quick and snappy! Just flashed it this morning.

Give this a go
-download StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5 to your computer
http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/Stock+Repack/EL26/
-Open odin (make sure only auto reboot is checked) and click the PDA tab
-put the .tar you just downloaded in the PDA section
-on your device, hold the volume down rocker and power button at the same time until you boot into odin/download mode
-press the volume up rocker
-plug your device into your computer
-wait for it to recognize and hit start...let it load completely
your phone should reboot. You can then boot back into recovery and be on your way. I would recommend a fresh download ( you may have got a bad one)
Hope this helps. It's worked for me time and time again..

I'm on stock and usually get 4 to 5 hours of on screen time at 25%-35% brightness. Typical use is browsing the Internet, checking email, and playing games. I don't have twitter or Facebook app running. I wanted to know what screen on time you get (specific value) so I could compare with my phone to see if I had normal battery life.

I'm running tests right now on most of the stable roms available. All have been advance data restored. Screenshots speak louder than words. The link is in my siggy
Edit: Results, so far, are in 2nd post

well the difference is your on stock and you have different settings, people set up scripts on custom roms a lot and you can undervolt plus the roms are more powerful. Try this video to get rooted on el29 then look up vids to load custom roms. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7pWjmKCsoc

I really dont know why my phone keeps doing this every rom i flash. but it starts at like 1 percent draining every 7 minutes which is really good but then it goes down to like losing 1 percent every 3 minutes it does this for EVERY rom im undervolted to 800mhz max 500 idle can someone explain this to me and tell me if it will go back to how good it was?

What apps do you have installed? Have you looked at what apps are using battery? If you're having a lot of battery drain no matter what ROM you're running it's def time to start looking into what you're installing on top of the roms for the battery zapper... menu->settings->about phone->battery usage.

Issues with the Official MIUI rom

I just starting to adjust to the new feel of it. but it keeps restarting my phone over and over. once every 30 mins. even if I'm in the middle of a phone call.
I'm happy as hell i didn't miss my call for the interview i have tomorrow.

yes i did that one. im on the kernal is came with cause idk which kernal i should use.
There are two usual culprits:
1.You need to set wifi sleep policy to NEVER (as sultan of swing mentioned), or
2. incomplete wipe. You need to fully wipe data,.cache, dalvik cache before installing MIUI, especially coming from a Sense rom. Search this forum for the format-all.zip file. Flash it in recovery for the full wipe. Then flash rom.

But if I were expecting an important call, I'd switch to a rom I could trust - probably a sense rom like Fresh or MikWhatever. And I say this as MIUI fan woman
im liking the rom so far. sad part is im a sense fan. this isn't what i wanted, but after playing around with this rom for 2 hours i liked it a lot and the stuff u can do.
i already can tell this is faster than a sense rom. 1 of the games i played on the sense roms lagged a little. but i dont get as much lag in the MIUI rom.

I find Savage 1.6 works best for me but every Evo is different. Other people swear by Zen-Droid which only bootloops my phone. bcnice-stable (v7 or v8) is another popular kernel (laggy for me). The safest (?) one seems to be cm6-Snap 7.6 (don't use SnapTurbo) - everything seems to work this snap.

Yep, that's the kernel. As to which to use, I am definitely NOT the person to ask. In the beginning, kernels were pretty.simple but as time went by, they've collected more and more acronyms. I use Savage 1.6 CFS HAVS. I think it has SBC because the other one is named noSBC.

Help w/Destroy v2

You need to wipe batt stats when switching ROMs, esp between Sense and AOSP. I would try charging to 100% and wiping stats. If that doesn't help, try charging for 8hrs, unplug, turn off, charge for an hour, unplug and turn on for two min, turn off and charge for an hour.
For GPS, google CM7 gps fix or ##gpsclrx#. Edit: nevermind, here it is:
Backup destroyer
wipe everything
Flash or restore sense ROM
dial ##gpsclrx#
let phone reboot
open maps and get a lock, let it stay locked for a few min
go back to recovery and wipe everything again
restore destoyer
For screen animation, check spare parts settings and make sure window animations are set to normal. Then check menu>settings>cm settings>display and make sure screen off animation is checked.
I never changed anything for the animation to stop working...It just stopped working all the sudden & still wont work no matter what I do..

Does anyone get the issue of the phone going off on its on after a few seconds? Also whenever browsing the web the phone dims on its own after a few seconds & I have it set to 1 minute....
What savage zen kernel were you guys using? Can you link me? Comparing the sprint lovers sense rom to CM7 battery life is horrible with cm7. w/the same amount of usage on sprint lovers my batt lasts all day whereas the cm7 dies half a day..
I get better battery life with the Tiamat Kernel.
How much better batt
how much better? Is it equal to Sprint lovers sense rom? What tiamat version are u using? jsta are you on CM 7 or something else?

Does anyone else find this phone to be a mess or do i just have a bad one?

My phone is always shutting itself off or randomly rebooting. The most it has ever gone without a reboot is 3 days and lately thats a stretch. I am running phantom hackers blazer rom. Is this just something that you go through when rooted? I love this phone but i hate goin to use it and see that its off. Sometimes i consider getting rid of this thing and goin with an iphone because of how stable they are. My bro has an iphone and it is pure rock solid!

I can go Weeks without a reboot. Running try the ROM in my sig. Make sure you do a clean install, using the flash all script. Don't use TB until you are stable. After that you will be golden.

So you think its the rom and not my phone? I will say it never rebooted before i rooted it. I do LOVE this phone and would hate to get rid of it i just get soo mad when it reboots. Not something you should expect from a 500+ dollar device..
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Yes, I think it is software related. Only time I ever get a random reboot is from something software related being off. Could be ROM, kernel, theme, just about any thing. That's why you want to start fresh. Caulks ROM is dead solid stable.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
rbtrucking -- are you undervolted? The only time I've had any stability/reboot problems with this phone were when I was a little too aggressive with the undervolt (or overclocked to 1.7ghz ). I'm on calk's 2.8.1 with steadyhawkin's gunslinger kernel btw.
Phones the most reliable I've ever had now that the los is gone. I undervolt mine considerably. I have 3 other friends with thus phone 2 of them not rooted. The stocks have more issues then rooted ones I swear with reboot hot reboots freezing..getting sticky on transitions . Each phone just handles each Rom a lily different....YMMV

Nope I am not undervolting or overclocking at all. I leave the cpu settings alone as I find the phone to be plenty fast and overclocking can drastically decrease the life of a cpu especially without proper cooling. I have heard nothing but amazing things about calkulins roms though maybe I will give it a try. Anyone else having any issues like mine on Phantom Hackers Blazer rom?

Ya I actually already had an sd card go bad on me and had to remove it because my phone would literally reboot every 10 minutes and sometimes I would have to pull the battery out for a little while to get it to go back on. The sd card was really really old though, came with my original evo. Since removing the sd card the reboots are allot less frequent but they still do occur but usually no more than once a day sometimes every couple days.
In 3 months I had one reboot...

Since day one my phone reboots on average 2 times a day and overheats and/or shuts off at least once a wk. For me, it's not software related as I have tried every rom.
Today it just started a new thing where it will boot up (go through the animation) and then the screen will go dark to where I can't do anything. Right before it goes dark, the animation will freeze. I am able to get into the recovery though, and have wiped the cache and dalvik.

Cyanogen 7 & Battery Drain

I just recently put Cyanogen 7 on my evo and immediately noticed a huge drop in battery performance. Before cyanogen the battery was definitely not new but it would make it through a good chunk of the day and if I charged it before bed then left it sitting it was usable for a few hours in the morning. After cyanogen it will turn itself off after about 4 hours of moderate use and will not make it through the night. I am wondering what I can do.
If I look at the battery usage page it shows cell standby and phone idle as by far the biggest battery users. I did some searching and saw that you need to calibrate the battery so I did that using a couple of different apps. I don't have the clockwork mod boot loader and I didn't see an easy way to delete batterystats.bin but there are quite a few apps in the marketplace that will do it for you. Going through the whole process a couple of times didn't make any appreciable difference in battery life. I would also be fine getting a new battery, it's time anyway, but if it's some kind of software issue I am not sure that will make much difference.
Suggestions?
You could also trying tweaking your kernel settings

Nope, no options menu. You can change the kernel settings under the CM performance setting. That's about it though. I'd leave it for now and see how it goes.

Down to 15% battery after 3hrs and 14 minutes…
One thing I am wondering about. In the past I always just left 4g on because most of the time I am on wifi and so the 4G would just switch off while the wifi was active. Perhaps cyanogen isn't doing a good job managing that and i need to be turning 4G on and off manually?

Yup. That is definitely the culprit. Turn on 4G and it completely kills the battery. Turn it off and it's fine (probably better than it ever was at this point). So WTF is up with that? Is wimax just unusable with CM7?
definitely turn off 4g, it's a big drain when searching for networks. if the kernel you're switching to has voltage or overclocking controls you can look into playing with that. also if the battery is coming close to 2 years old you may wanna replace it for 10 bucks at amazon and get a 1700mah.

It's hard to complain since it's not like I paid anything for CM7 and it is pretty much awesome in every other way. Here goes though… the great thing about cyanogenmod is that it is pretty much the same level of quality you can expect from the original ROM except, better. It's not a hack. Everything works as it should. So I am surprised that this was never fixed. The phone doesn't suck battery life like that with the original ROM, from HTC, when 4G is on so it's clearly not a hardware issue. Seems crazy to me that this was considered done. That said, there is no way I am going back to stock so I guess 4G pretty much just goes away. Kind of lame.

[Q] T-999 S III gets really hot and kills battery in matter of couple hours.

(this is my first post so im sorry if i posted in the wrong place or asked in the wrong area)
A couple nights ago i flashed a 4.2.2 P.A.C man ROM ( dont get me wrong i love this ROM thanks to the devs ) but ever since i installed this ROM my phone has been heating up to temperatures like 96 degrees Fahrenheit this kills my battery really fast, i just use basic apps like stock messaging app or apollo music player :'(
(today i unplugged my phone from the charger at around 7:25 AM and by 10:00 AM i was down to about 23% battery life) along with this sometimes my phone crashes ( i believe its from the heat) and i have to pull my battery pack out and reinsert it to boot up the phone.
I love this ROM but this is irritating me i cant get 5 hours out of my battery i already tried a new SIII battery and the same thing happened.
If someone could please help me or atleast guide me somewhere that would help me i would appreciate it i used to love listening to music on my way home but now i cant :/

try to reflash the rom with full wipe . if that doesnt work use another rom in the meantime. i would of said use another battery, but you stated the problem continued. i think its the rom
Sounds like something may be keeping the CPU at 100%. Let's see some stats?
Wouldn't go as far as the rom is the issue as the person using the rom (not a shot at you op) we need more details on what you did to install and what you came from and stuff. Might be your boot loader needs to be updated. Might be a kernel issue. Like I said can't immediately run and blame roms, even though its possible. Download betterbatterystats and report battery life with detailed info.

The pacman rom is an CM10/AOSP/AOKP or a ported rom.
It is an excellent rom for developers and for those people who like to do a lot of experimentation with their phones.
What I would suggest is to flash a custom rom like "Wicked V10", "Darthstalker X2" or the "STOCKORAMA" V2 rom.
Any custom roms based on Samsung Touchwiz Jellybean 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 would be a very excellent choice.
These custom roms are feature packed with themes, addons, mods and other extras. - Check em out!
Here are the links to those roms in case you decide to flash one of them.
STOCKORAMA | VERSION 2 | Aroma | Multi-Carrier | Multi-Window
WICKED™ v10 | AROMA | Rom Control | Full Customization
DARTHSTALKER ☆ | VERSION X2 | Aroma | Multi-Carrier | Customizable
Good luck!

Please stop posting that its only a good rom for developers... I used aosp type builds steady for 5 months except for when I worked in a certain job site and had to have WiFi calling, I restored right away as soon as possible. It might not be 100% stable but its good for a very very large community including some friends of mine who know close to nothing about phones or modding and devving. Those other ROMs are just opinion (not bad ones at all) and you aren't helping the op at all with his question that he asked.

Start with everything. We will go from there. Let it idle for as long as possible so the stats are accurate.

This attachment right? or is it something else? it usually uses 15-30% battery power per hour depending what i use, i dont usually use applications a whole lot. Like today all i used was stock texting apollo and snapped a couple of pictures my phone was dead before my 4th period class
Now screenshot the cpu states. Your deep sleep slot should be the biggest one. If not a rogue app is keeping your phone awake.

Mine gets to 106 its not rare lol, you have a rouge app some where eating battery I'm guessing. Cant tell much with the screens you provided. I suggest a factory reset and don't restore apps.

I was going to say the same thing but you beat me to it! LOL
Let me see partial and kernel wakelocks.
Yea like the rest say the temp is no biggie but that 38x mhz slot shows an app constantly running. It's 50% of your on time.
