I just recently put Cyanogen 7 on my evo and immediately noticed a huge drop in battery performance. Before cyanogen the battery was definitely not new but it would make it through a good chunk of the day and if I charged it before bed then left it sitting it was usable for a few hours in the morning. After cyanogen it will turn itself off after about 4 hours of moderate use and will not make it through the night. I am wondering what I can do.
If I look at the battery usage page it shows cell standby and phone idle as by far the biggest battery users. I did some searching and saw that you need to calibrate the battery so I did that using a couple of different apps. I don't have the clockwork mod boot loader and I didn't see an easy way to delete batterystats.bin but there are quite a few apps in the marketplace that will do it for you. Going through the whole process a couple of times didn't make any appreciable difference in battery life. I would also be fine getting a new battery, it's time anyway, but if it's some kind of software issue I am not sure that will make much difference.
Suggestions?

I haven't been on the EVO 4G since mid 2011, but I seem to remember using the Savaged Zen kernel and getting much better battery life over stock.

I quick google search suggests that the savage zen kernal is at least worth a try. I don't know anything about swapping kernals though. Can you give me any more info on it?
EDIT: Looks like you just flash it the same way you flash a ROM. Will I need to delete everything on the device?

Thank you, that was perfect. I did it, used the version at the top of the list linked above, and got the "your now running SavagedZen." Rebooted and everything appears to be fine. Kernal version says "[email protected] #1." I can test the battery life tomorrow, but now what? It seemed like there was going to be an options panel somewhere but I guess not?
Nope, no options menu. You can change the kernel settings under the CM performance setting. That's about it though. I'd leave it for now and see how it goes.

Down to 15% battery after 3hrs and 14 minutes…
One thing I am wondering about. In the past I always just left 4g on because most of the time I am on wifi and so the 4G would just switch off while the wifi was active. Perhaps cyanogen isn't doing a good job managing that and i need to be turning 4G on and off manually?

Yup. That is definitely the culprit. Turn on 4G and it completely kills the battery. Turn it off and it's fine (probably better than it ever was at this point). So WTF is up with that? Is wimax just unusable with CM7?
definitely turn off 4g, it's a big drain when searching for networks. if the kernel you're switching to has voltage or overclocking controls you can look into playing with that. also if the battery is coming close to 2 years old you may wanna replace it for 10 bucks at amazon and get a 1700mah.

It's hard to complain since it's not like I paid anything for CM7 and it is pretty much awesome in every other way. Here goes though… the great thing about cyanogenmod is that it is pretty much the same level of quality you can expect from the original ROM except, better. It's not a hack. Everything works as it should. So I am surprised that this was never fixed. The phone doesn't suck battery life like that with the original ROM, from HTC, when 4G is on so it's clearly not a hardware issue. Seems crazy to me that this was considered done. That said, there is no way I am going back to stock so I guess 4G pretty much just goes away. Kind of lame.

i just switched from the epic 4g to the evo (tried for 30 days, but the pentile matrix was a deal breaker). I flashed myn's rom. and netarchy's latest stable kernel. 4.3.1 -conservative, screen off profile too.
is it supposed to be this slow? I had to remove all the animations just to bear.
is it supposed to be so choppy?
why can't websites load quick enough? is it the flash?
the text is so blurry, is there a sharper font?
the battery? wtf. if i put it to sleep, it's ok. but with the screen on (relatively light to medium use) it won't last the day.
how do i watch videos?

I dont know what you're talking about. I'm running the plain myn with the kernel he provides and it's fast as hell and stable. Maybe the kernel u installed is causing problems.
Try doing a full wipe and reflashing with whatever he provides.
As far as the internet goes, there is a problem with the hosts file that myn has in rls5. Download ad-free from the market, click Revert, then download the newest host files. That will fix your slow internet.
Sounds like something is jacked with your flash of the rom. Did you download rls5? What radios do you have? RLS5 is blazing fast.

i actually did try that, but the battery was draining more that i liked. it probably was something that i did. I will try trouble-shooting later. Thanks alot though.
Sounds like somethin in your setup is acting up...
I've tried 3 different ROMs (CM6 currently) and havent ever had "bad" battery life... and I do use my phone, have email/FB/wether updating hourly and I check other Email, news, etc all the time... watch a video here and there.... My battery never lasts less than a day...
I'd say just wipe everything and try another ROM/kernel... hopefully that'll help
Just like everyone says wipe your cache & Dalvik. Matter fact do like i do if your running clockwork wipe it 2x or 3x's. Get Rom Manager and and update your clockwork to the latest 3.0.0.2 <<--i think thats it.
Wipe and re flash should solve your problem. I run Myns Rls5 and its flawless...
I was only on Myn for a day, but I didn't have any problems with it. I set up my friends on it though and he's been using it for the past few weeks with no speed or lag issues.
I have had the problems you describe on a few different ROMs if I'm using a kernel that doesn't play well with the phone/ROM. I would play with different kernels until you get a setup that works.
Hope that helps.
If your using Set CPU make sure is not throttled way down because this will lag and freeze your phone up. Kernel is probably making things worse as well.

I'll confirm this. I got rid of set cpu all together. battery life is just fine. get to about 10-15% by the time i charge at night.
I just want to say that compared to the Epic the EVO screen is crap. You are going to have to deal with that. It will never be as good of a picture. As for battery life this is a known issue. Battery life on the Evo is terrible. There are certain tweaks and settings that will work to where you can get the whole day out of your phone. Just try different kernels, settings and what not until you figure out what works for your phone. Believe it or not all Evo's are a little different and what works for one may not work for yours. May I also suggest purchasing an extended battery. You can find cheap ones on ebay for around $10. These will give you better battery life. Enjoy the Evo bro and don't worry you will find out what works best for your phone. Just come here and read everyday and try new things and sooner or later you will be rocking the Evo just the way you want it.
I just starting to adjust to the new feel of it. but it keeps restarting my phone over and over. once every 30 mins. even if I'm in the middle of a phone call.

yes i did that one. im on the kernal is came with cause idk which kernal i should use.
There are two usual culprits:
1.You need to set wifi sleep policy to NEVER (as sultan of swing mentioned), or
2. incomplete wipe. You need to fully wipe data,.cache, dalvik cache before installing MIUI, especially coming from a Sense rom. Search this forum for the format-all.zip file. Flash it in recovery for the full wipe. Then flash rom.

But if I were expecting an important call, I'd switch to a rom I could trust - probably a sense rom like Fresh or MikWhatever. And I say this as MIUI fan woman
im liking the rom so far. sad part is im a sense fan. this isn't what i wanted, but after playing around with this rom for 2 hours i liked it a lot and the stuff u can do.
i already can tell this is faster than a sense rom. 1 of the games i played on the sense roms lagged a little. but i dont get as much lag in the MIUI rom.

I find Savage 1.6 works best for me but every Evo is different. Other people swear by Zen-Droid which only bootloops my phone. bcnice-stable (v7 or v8) is another popular kernel (laggy for me). The safest (?) one seems to be cm6-Snap 7.6 (don't use SnapTurbo) - everything seems to work this snap.

Yep, that's the kernel. As to which to use, I am definitely NOT the person to ask. In the beginning, kernels were pretty.simple but as time went by, they've collected more and more acronyms. I use Savage 1.6 CFS HAVS. I think it has SBC because the other one is named noSBC.
First issue is the battery life drains really fast. Is there any fix for that or is this only due to destroyer v2? You need to wipe batt stats when switching ROMs, esp between Sense and AOSP. I would try charging to 100% and wiping stats. If that doesn't help, try charging for 8hrs, unplug, turn off, charge for an hour, unplug and turn on for two min, turn off and charge for an hour.
For GPS, google CM7 gps fix or ##gpsclrx#. Edit: nevermind, here it is:
Backup destroyer
wipe everything
Flash or restore sense ROM
dial ##gpsclrx#
let phone reboot
open maps and get a lock, let it stay locked for a few min
go back to recovery and wipe everything again
restore destoyer
For screen animation, check spare parts settings and make sure window animations are set to normal. Then check menu>settings>cm settings>display and make sure screen off animation is checked.
I never changed anything for the animation to stop working...It just stopped working all the sudden & still wont work no matter what I do..

What savage zen kernel were you guys using? Can you link me? Comparing the sprint lovers sense rom to CM7 battery life is horrible with cm7. w/the same amount of usage on sprint lovers my batt lasts all day whereas the cm7 dies half a day..
I get better battery life with the Tiamat Kernel.

My phone is always shutting itself off or randomly rebooting. The most it has ever gone without a reboot is 3 days and lately thats a stretch. I am running phantom hackers blazer rom. Yes, I think it is software related. Only time I ever get a random reboot is from something software related being off. Could be ROM, kernel, theme, just about any thing. That's why you want to start fresh. Caulks ROM is dead solid stable.

rbtrucking -- are you undervolted? The only time I've had any stability/reboot problems with this phone were when I was a little too aggressive with the undervolt (or overclocked to 1.7ghz ). I'm on calk's 2.8.1 with steadyhawkin's gunslinger kernel btw.
Phones the most reliable I've ever had now that the los is gone. I undervolt mine considerably. I have 3 other friends with thus phone 2 of them not rooted. The stocks have more issues then rooted ones I swear with reboot hot reboots freezing..getting sticky on transitions . Each phone just handles each Rom a lily different....YMMV

Nope I am not undervolting or overclocking at all. I leave the cpu settings alone as I find the phone to be plenty fast and overclocking can drastically decrease the life of a cpu especially without proper cooling. Ya I actually already had an sd card go bad on me and had to remove it because my phone would literally reboot every 10 minutes and sometimes I would have to pull the battery out for a little while to get it to go back on. The sd card was really really old though, came with my original evo. Since removing the sd card the reboots are allot less frequent but they still do occur but usually no more than once a day sometimes every couple days.
In 3 months I had one reboot...

Since day one my phone reboots on average 2 times a day and overheats and/or shuts off at least once a wk. For me, it's not software related as I have tried every rom.
Today it just started a new thing where it will boot up (go through the animation) and then the screen will go dark to where I can't do anything. Right before it goes dark, the animation will freeze. I am able to get into the recovery though, and have wiped the cache and dalvik.

Wel, I was having pretty good battery life with the L710's stock MA6 ROM with KT747's kernel but I decided to flash a new ROM.
Here is what battery life looks like and I'm worried that its not the ROM but a problem with my battery, since people have been reporting exceptional battery life with this ROM.
Some specs.

I try to never dirty flash and usually just restore apps from TitaniumBackup. All three times were full wipes formatting any partition I could other than extSdcard. No old kernel settings were restored and I'm not over or undeclocked but I did under volt by 50 and the phone seems stable but no improvement.
As a matter of fact during the latter of the installs I restored nothing. I've also disconnected my sdCard in hopes that it was a bad card (some hopes) but to no avail.
I am redownloading the rooms even do the md5 sum was the exact and downloading the gapp from a different source.

I ran my phone with the kernel that LiquidSmooth has as stock, and it was extremely buggy for me, maybe it just did not behave well with my phone but it looks like the kernel has a few known issues as is. One bug I had is that audio playback was extremely erratic, and I haven't come across a commenter stating anything similar. I'd really hate migrating from LiquidSmooth, especially with the notion that I just "gave up", and not on just any release but on a stable release.

Update:
On this new install from a new download and gapps from a different source, I do not seem to be having the audio issue, which seems strange as both prior downloads had an exact md5 sum.
*Currently hopeful with fingers crossed*
I'm really enjoying LiquidSmooth, too, so I know what you mean. I hope it works for you this time.
