This is my first non-HtC phone and am quite disappointed and frustrated at the lack of pinch to zoom as well as text rewrapping with the default browser on my GSM Galixy Nexus. I tried other browsers(Chrome, Dolphin HD and Opera)but all with mixed results. Dolphin didn't zoom at all, Crhome did but doesn't rewrap and Opera did both but only on certain sites. What's the deal here? Are HtC phones the only ones on the planet that are capable of performing this no-brainer feature on mobile web browsing, or is there a browser or custom rom that anybody can suggest to me, that will do this for me. Having to squint to read text is no fun and quite headache inducing, and text not fitting the screen properly, all but negates the point of having a large screen if I'm constantly having to zoom left and right to read it all. Thanks ahead of time for anyone willing and able to help remedy this maddening issue.
The text will reflow, you just have to double tap the text after you pinch. Its not like htc that doed it automatically.

issue pretty much solved
Well thankfully after going through a stock 4.0.1 rom to a custom 4.0.2 to now a 4.0.3 rom I finally have the more consistent pinch to zoom capability with the browser. It doesn't rewrap quite as well but at least it does it. I'm curious as to why you and other prefer it not to work like HTC does it? What's the downside to having it rewrap automatically? I'm fine with double tapping to do it too just as long as it does it. But if you can skip that step altogether, why not?

I hate this automatic text wrapping feature. The only time I really use pinch to zoom is when I want to fokus on something "small" and hard to hit like a link (I use double tap to zoom in on a paragraph for reading. I find that much more convenient). When the text automatically rewraps after zooming I almost all the time lose my original zoom target. It's so annoying that I was glad to see that Google only rewrap text on demand.
But I think many like the automatic text rewrap. All I can say is that I'm not one of them.
Just fyi the galaxy nexus works the same as my nexus one. Stock android browser has always functioned like this, its not new. Htc always changed it on their devices.
Well, I've since found a rom where the browser does a little better with the zooming in and rewrapping, so I can finally put that behind me. I guess the tid bit that you mentioned about the stock browser acting that way shouldn't have been too big of a surprise to me. When I had the HD2 with Windows 6.5, I was so excited at the ability to port Android roms to it, so I put one on there based off of a Nexus One rom. The browser acted just as you said. Only roms meant for HTc phones and of course genuine HTC sense roms all acted the way I'm used to. I guess I was just so flabbergasted and frustrated that automatic text rewrapping was either not as in demand by other users I would have imagined, or that HTC had some how weren't allowing others to tweak the browser in that way. Double tapping is a fine and fair compromise though.

You might try giving Chrome Beta a try. In the default ICS browser, double tapping pretty much just zooms you in by a random/arbitrary amount. Chrome Beta acts a little more like the iPhone in that when you double tap on an element (like a paragraph or picture) it zooms to fit that element on screen. Works perfectly IMO.

Ok, the browser is great in terms of the speed, layout, support for animations/javascript etc. But I think the interface sucks a little. Where's the home page? I have to press 3 buttons, and yet `share` and this other crap I'm never going to use (share a web page? what does that even mean?) is right in your face. I find bookmarks clumsy to navigate, and there doesn't seem to be and way of constructing a folder full of bookmarks in under 30 minutes. If I double click to zoom then half the time I'll not quite double click and it'll load whatever link I clicked on first, so I have to double click on a blank part of the page, or use pinch to zoom, neither of which is ideal. How do I stop a page from loading if I've made a mistake or changed my mind? I'm not used to browsers with no stop button. Seems that you're supposed to just wait.
When I'm zooming in , it would be nice if the text was reformatted to fit the current width of the screen. Otherwise I have to keep scrolling left and right as I read. Am I supposed to have to do that? It would be nice to have a `reformat` button. Oh, but not hidden away on a sub menu somewhere like the home page is, but accessible from a long-click on the current page.
It's as if the browser was coded by two entirely different teams - a really competent one which has produced a fast, powerful browser which handles most web pages perfectly; and some other guys who've knocked up some rubbish front end quickly.
1) About stopping the page. You can either click in the top-right, where the refresh icon normally is, or you can press the back hardware button.
2) I'm guessing your Desire is from Orange? They took out the re-formatting function for some crappy reason. Really pees me off as well
Try xScope browser, probably that will solve your problem.

Yeah, it's Orange uk - home of the `yeah, lets take off Google Talk but leave the service running all the time` customization. The sooner there's a safe way of putting on a stock rom (with the possibility of putting back the crap Orange one if I need help from Orange) the better!

It's currently perfectly safe to flash a stock rom. An Orange branded rom will appear soon as a lot of operator specific roms are currently surfacing.
I have quite a few major annoyances with the stock browser although I like it best from the offerings. One of which was the stop button, the home button and the zoom. It always zoom in far too much and usually I'm one handed so that becomes a pain.

I have switched to Dolphin Browser HD, very nice.
It has tabs at the top so they are easy to switch between and also has swipe gestures to open a tab menu. Works almost exactly the same as the stock browser including pinch to zoom, I don't think it uses our flash lite though but flash lite isn't really worth it currently.
Orange took out the text wrapping? Crazy.
I love the browser, but for some reason pinch zooming on it SUCKS!! Its really annoying to zoom in and then it moves all the way to almost the opposite side.. basically it doesn't stay in the place on the point I zoom in on.. is there a setting or something ?? Also.. this is the best/most popular browser correct??
Thanks

I doubt it too. The Beta installed at like 50MB in size, and was horrifically slow as well.
I really should give the stock browser another shake, I still have a grudge against it from my android 1.6 days, where the stock browser was fairly horrible.
I use dolphin HD on my EVO. I think its much better then the stock one. Seems to load faster and you can change it to think you are a DESKTOP and get the full web site...
Maybe you all don't notice it, but I bet it happens all the time and maybe you just don't mind??
I am using HD, and if you pinch zoom lets say 60-90% zoom, and take your fingers off the screen, it does not stay where you zoomed in at.. Which means you have to try to find the area, zoomed allllll the way in..
Or you can just zoom out, rinse and repeat the same process, lol..
Seriously, haven't any of you used an Iphone? Talk about perfect (browser wise)
Dolphin HD would be better IMO, but the zoom is BROKEN..

+1 on the pinch zoom issue. When I zoom, it jumps back to the left side of the browser window, in some cases, basically taking out of view the part I wanted to zoom into in the first place.
I was wondering what the deal was myself...nice to know I'm not alone.

As I said, I think EVERYONE has the issue, but they just don't either notice it, or understand how a zoom feature should work..
I was about to take a video of the issue, but I think it pointless, because everyone has this issue..
I just wish there was a way to fix it.
Just tried zooming in on all corners, left right etc etc and it went where I was zooming. Didn't automatically bump me to the left ... I have seen that happen though at times.

I think what it does, is its trying to auto correct itself..
Try zooming in "a little" then focus on 1 word, zoom to almost max, let go.. I will bet that word will not be in view anymore.
I had this issue with the old Touch.. Which was just ****ty compared to today.. But compared to the Iphone.. I was hoping the EVO would be atleast on par or better..
I do notice that when zooming in max, or close to, it tends to gather the text and move left, yes. I usually don't zoom even half way so that'd probably be why I've only noticed this occasionally.
That is kind of annoying.

I'm finding the standard text size on a lot of non-mobile websites very difficult to read. After comparing to my iphone its just not sharp at all. I have to enlarge it to get it readable, and the double-tap-to-zoom feature just sucks. Pinch to zoom is a non-option for one-handed use.
I've tried increasing the text scaling option, and this does the trick when raised to 150%, but then all of the larger text on mobile websites or similar are ridiculously large and unusable. I've also tried raising the minimum font size, and in the little image of the font sizes this does the trick since it makes the "tiny" and "small" sizes much larger but doesn't affect the larger ones, however, this doesn't seem to actually do anything in practice.
I've tried using other browsers (Dolphin HD), but though they work, they're buggy and they don't really fix the problem I'm having anyway.
Anyone have any suggestions for better browsing? As it stands right now, I really prefer iphone browsing (not flaming here) just because 1. text is really sharp, and 2. double-tap-to-zoom is awesome and works perfectly. I thought with the much larger display, the Galaxy Nexus would be perfect for mobile browsing, but I'm finding that I have to zoom in no matter what to see what I want, so I'm not sure the res is really helping me.

Because it's very hit or miss as to whether it zooms on what it's supposed to. Even a pretty well defined block of text is often cut off after I use it. Plus, it doesn't work at ALL without auto-fit pages enabled, and that just makes webpages look like crap.
if you are just trying to actually READ what's there, the reflow works very well. Haven't had any issues with it.

You can also change the minimum font size in settings?
I just don't get this.
I got the nexus out and tested it on several websites, mobile and desktop versions. Everything displayed perfect, and was easy to read at an arms length away.
What really doesn't add up is the comparison to the iPhone. Both screen are high resolution with the Nexus having a better contrast ratio, and deeper blacks. Because they both are high resolution how would a screen almost half the size have larger font?
I'm not a big nexus guy or anything, it just doest add up to me, but I could be wrong.

Make no mistake - there IS no "reflow"...yet. Gingerbread reflows just fine, but ICS has yet to implement this feature (at least as of my official build). what they have is a feature called auto-fit pages. Basically this just puts all of the text into a column of sorts, and does NOT dynamically render the text correctly no matter what zoom state you're in. It's very much inferior to actual reflow, which I'm dying for.

Look, I'm not hating, as I have and love my Galaxy Nexus, and I use it WAY more than my iphone (which I'm considering selling), but have you actually used the iphone 4S? (or 4 for that matter) The screen is amazing, and just as much so as the HD AMOLED in the GN... maybe more so, except the pitiful size. True, the contrast isn't "near infinite" like an AMOLED screen, but this is somewhat an academic number for bragging rights. After all, a very dark screen of infinitesimally above zero would have a much (infinitely, in fact) lower contrast than infinite. Regardless, it's about more than specs, and the text on the iphone is insanely sharp. I would have thought with the PPI on the GN being what it is (nearly parity with the iphone), it would be the same, but it's definitely not. I don't know if its the pentile, or what, but I'm just calling it like I see it.
Regardless, does any of this actually answer the question? Not to be an ass, but why would you come into my [Q] thread just to say - essentially - "this problem doesn't exist"?

You are generally right that text/paragraph formatting looks ugly in ICS browser (and actually I made comparison a few weeks ago to show exactly this: http://imgur.com/B6Lx6) though it also has its advantages.
For instance go to hardocp.com and open some article on both iPhone and your GNex - the page will be barely readable on iPhone and will be just fine on GNex, thanks to that "ugly" column formatting thing.
Honestly I learned to live with that; it's just ugly on page overview, doesn't matter at all when you are actually reading the content.
Though, you also brought up another problem which is annoying the hell out of me: on many pages double tap shows bad paragraph/place. I double tap a text in some column, and it zooms & scrolls to a completely different piece of the page, forcing me to scroll back manually to the content I was interested in. Very annoying. I hope they will fix that bug soon. It's still not fixed in 4.0.3, as I tested it already.

The problem seems to be that for whatever reason they have decided (or its bugged) reflow the text as the page loads Instead of doing it dynamically on double tap ala pre ICS. Which makes the overview mode look like crap.
Considering ICS was supposed to be a giant leap forward in everything for Android including UI, and by doing this they have made web pages look ugly.
One of the best things about Android is the dynamic text reflow and i hope they bring it back or get rid of the bug that's stopping it from happening. I can't believe they would have sat round in a meeting and actively thought this would be a better solution.
I come from HTC sensation, T-Mobile galaxy s 2, galaxy s 2 I9100, international galaxy note and I believe the galaxy nexus has the overall best browsing experience. It loads pages SUPER FAST!!! Flash content loads up in no time, scrolling is very smooth so is pinch to zoom ( not as smooth as the galaxy s 2 but can't complain), the resolution and the screen size is also awesome. I love the lab feature when u get rid of the address bar and use the quick controls I think its very intuitive. For a phone with " lower " specs than the competition I say the nexus kick some serious ass in the browsing department. Your thoughts?

I agree. The BEST thing about this phone is the 720p screen. Mhl adapter to my TV and watch Netflix, or flash videos on the big screen!

Forgot to say it in my OP but the only thing that bothers me sometimes in the browser is when you double tap to zoom sometimes instead of zooming, it clicks on a link or pic or whatever is on the page. But yeah, excellent browser!

I do like the concept of the chrome browser, how you can switch pages by swiping through them is very nice, also the tab management looks cool. But for some reason chrome, for me, isn't as responsive as the stock browser. When I'm trying to pinch to zoom or scroll through the page it takes a couple of second before registering my gestures. As far as ICS browser + it's pretty much the same as stock but with more features. While its cool that it adds more quick controls I think it's annoying that they take a big space when u activate it. Sometimes you just wanna scroll and they appear taking a big chunk of the page. I personally prefer the stock browser but who am I to say which is best for others.

Thats what i use (read my other post) how good are quick controls!
When I first got the phone I decided I was going to stick with a lot of the stock options to begin with and see how they fared, and I'm still using the browser. I gave Chrome a try briefly, and may have stayed on it, but then changed the DPI to 240 which it doesn't like, so I'm back on the stock.
It's smooth and responsive, and I'm a huge fan of the quick menu enabled in the labs section. My brother got a Nexus recently, and one of the first things I did for him was to set up the quick menu options for him in the browser.
Yeah is good. The only thing I don't like is the bookmarks, is all random not like the htc browser that you can sort by mostly used.
The ics + browser quick controls handling of multiple tabs is unmatched. Even chrome doesn't do it for me.
Plus chrome is not as smooth at all.
I love Chrome Beta, and it keeps getting better. No flash is a non-issue; Adobe officially dropped support for mobile flash last November. They're going to instead focus on HTML5-- something that Chrome *does* support, and quite well I might add.
I've used just about every browser but have been pretty happy with the stock Android browser since ICS until now.
I've noticed since I've upgraded to JB official version via ota that just touching the screen and scrolling starts zooming. This doesn't always happen and is hard to intentionally replicate because it seems to happen more on some sites than others but it is becoming increasingly annoying.
I like just beinc able to double tap to zoom but now it seems to zoom at random with just one press.
The other small improvements to the factory browser are pretty nice but I'm not sure what's going on here.
I Googled this issue and even tried to look up specific JB changes pertaining to the stock Android browser but haven't seen anything about single touch zoom or rather random zoom.
Any thoughts (besides just download xyz browser)?

Your touching the left or right side of the screen, slide up is zoom in, slide down is zoom out....was trippin me out to until I figured out where to touch. Allows for one finger zoom and works in dolphin as well, prolly other browsers but haven't tested any yet.

Excellent that seems to be correct. Thank you. It was driving me crazy.

Does anyone know how to disable this? I HATE IT!
^ this..
Bump. I hate this as well. It's redundant when we already have a gesture for zooming: pinching. And we can't afford to waste any more screen real estate on our phones.
Ditto
hope there's an option soon to disable. hate going to stock email app, opening an email, wanting to scroll through fast to read but instead zoom that thing large enough for my great grandmother to read. And it always seems easier for me to zoom in rather than zoom out. hahaha
Too annoying!
Hard to believe there is no option to disable this obnoxious annoyance. I'm fairly new to Android but if this was my old winmo I'd scour the registry and surely locate an entry to tweak.
Is there somewhere similar on the Android filesystem or through the terminal I could begin to look for a tweak?

I think I read in the MOAR thread that it was disabled in MA6.
Android is hard-coded. Samsung are morons.

What I am finding is the Android environment is pretty much all hard-coded. So unless the developer have you a setting where you could flip a switch, you're stuck with it, or you are downloading customs from here.
I actually like the slide zoom feature although as others have stated, at first I thought there was a bug that was causing it to zoom on its own. l suspect, like you I am used to using the slider in Windows at the right edge to scroll down the page of email.
Anyway, I have since gotten used to it and now am not going to perform the update to MA6/MB1 because I depend on it for one handed email.
What is most frustrating is to know they know it is a hard-coded environment and they could have just as easily added a switch to disable the feature (which by the way is undocumented - and Samsung chat support will tell you doesn't exist) rather than to simply disable. it.

Ah, so they did disable it. I was going nuts trying to figure out why it no longer worked. I was actually starting to like it too- it was pretty handy for one-handed browsing. They should've just kept it as a settings option.
