Dolphin browser.. who uses it?? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love the browser, but for some reason pinch zooming on it SUCKS!! Its really annoying to zoom in and then it moves all the way to almost the opposite side.. basically it doesn't stay in the place on the point I zoom in on.. is there a setting or something ?? Also.. this is the best/most popular browser correct??
Thanks

Are you using dolphin HD or no

I use the hd version. Love it. Imo better than the stock browser.

Love that Dolphin HD and can't say I have the pinch to zoom issues. Sometimes I need to adjust but its hardly an issue. Usually on larger pages.

xScope 6 is my favorite browser.

I uninstalled Dolphin Browser HD. But there is still a folder called TunnyBrowser in myfiles. That folder is 6.2mb and contains 25folders and 407 files in it. Is it safe to delete that folder?
I have now switched to Opera

Moved to Q&A.

I believe that folder is the Dolphin cache, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyway, I have deleted it many times now without an issue.

I am yet to come across a browser that can do anything better than the stock browser. I really think the 2.2 browser is damn good. Maybe Firefox can make me change my mind when it comes out but I doubt it.

I doubt it too. The Beta installed at like 50MB in size, and was horrifically slow as well.
I really should give the stock browser another shake, I still have a grudge against it from my android 1.6 days, where the stock browser was fairly horrible.

I use dolphin HD on my EVO. I think its much better then the stock one. Seems to load faster and you can change it to think you are a DESKTOP and get the full web site...

Maybe you all don't notice it, but I bet it happens all the time and maybe you just don't mind??
I am using HD, and if you pinch zoom lets say 60-90% zoom, and take your fingers off the screen, it does not stay where you zoomed in at.. Which means you have to try to find the area, zoomed allllll the way in..
Or you can just zoom out, rinse and repeat the same process, lol..
Seriously, haven't any of you used an Iphone? Talk about perfect (browser wise)
Dolphin HD would be better IMO, but the zoom is BROKEN..

+1 on the pinch zoom issue. When I zoom, it jumps back to the left side of the browser window, in some cases, basically taking out of view the part I wanted to zoom into in the first place.
I was wondering what the deal was myself...nice to know I'm not alone.

My dad has the same phone as me, he just got his and his does it too..
As I said, I think EVERYONE has the issue, but they just don't either notice it, or understand how a zoom feature should work..
I was about to take a video of the issue, but I think it pointless, because everyone has this issue..
I just wish there was a way to fix it.

Just tried zooming in on all corners, left right etc etc and it went where I was zooming. Didn't automatically bump me to the left ... I have seen that happen though at times.

I think what it does, is its trying to auto correct itself..
Try zooming in "a little" then focus on 1 word, zoom to almost max, let go.. I will bet that word will not be in view anymore.
I had this issue with the old Touch.. Which was just ****ty compared to today.. But compared to the Iphone.. I was hoping the EVO would be atleast on par or better..

I do notice that when zooming in max, or close to, it tends to gather the text and move left, yes. I usually don't zoom even half way so that'd probably be why I've only noticed this occasionally.
That is kind of annoying.

Its annoying when some sites are not mobile friendly and you need to zoom in to press submit or something.

Yeah that is very annoying with the screwed up zooming. Mine does that too that's why I switched back to stock browser. Stock seems to load faster imo.

Browser rant

Ok, the browser is great in terms of the speed, layout, support for animations/javascript etc. But I think the interface sucks a little. Where's the home page? I have to press 3 buttons, and yet `share` and this other crap I'm never going to use (share a web page? what does that even mean?) is right in your face. I find bookmarks clumsy to navigate, and there doesn't seem to be and way of constructing a folder full of bookmarks in under 30 minutes. If I double click to zoom then half the time I'll not quite double click and it'll load whatever link I clicked on first, so I have to double click on a blank part of the page, or use pinch to zoom, neither of which is ideal. How do I stop a page from loading if I've made a mistake or changed my mind? I'm not used to browsers with no stop button. Seems that you're supposed to just wait.
When I'm zooming in , it would be nice if the text was reformatted to fit the current width of the screen. Otherwise I have to keep scrolling left and right as I read. Am I supposed to have to do that? It would be nice to have a `reformat` button. Oh, but not hidden away on a sub menu somewhere like the home page is, but accessible from a long-click on the current page.
It's as if the browser was coded by two entirely different teams - a really competent one which has produced a fast, powerful browser which handles most web pages perfectly; and some other guys who've knocked up some rubbish front end quickly.
1) About stopping the page. You can either click in the top-right, where the refresh icon normally is, or you can press the back hardware button.
2) I'm guessing your Desire is from Orange? They took out the re-formatting function for some crappy reason. Really pees me off as well
Try xScope browser, probably that will solve your problem.

I've tried a couple of other browsers, and they're usually rubbish (no multitouch etc). The stock browser just needs a few fixes and it'll be fine.

Yeah, it's Orange uk - home of the `yeah, lets take off Google Talk but leave the service running all the time` customization. The sooner there's a safe way of putting on a stock rom (with the possibility of putting back the crap Orange one if I need help from Orange) the better!

It's currently perfectly safe to flash a stock rom. An Orange branded rom will appear soon as a lot of operator specific roms are currently surfacing.
I have quite a few major annoyances with the stock browser although I like it best from the offerings. One of which was the stop button, the home button and the zoom. It always zoom in far too much and usually I'm one handed so that becomes a pain.

Well, it seems you have not tried xScope.

Also, there is a new "Dolphin Browser HD".
But yeah, stock browser user interface sucks! I really don't understand why it does not have proper "favorites" feature.

I have switched to Dolphin Browser HD, very nice.
It has tabs at the top so they are easy to switch between and also has swipe gestures to open a tab menu. Works almost exactly the same as the stock browser including pinch to zoom, I don't think it uses our flash lite though but flash lite isn't really worth it currently.
Orange took out the text wrapping? Crazy.

what web browser to use

what web browser is everyone using the stock one on the g2 has a problem that i just noticed if you clear the history you lose all your book marks or is there a way to stop that?
I just re-discover Dolphin HD browser. I bought it about a year ago then Opera came out and I switched to it. I tried Fennec, but it's very slow right now to me. I'm really liking Dolphin HD!
Xscope is a great alternative. Much faster than the default browser, and instant page back/forward (like opera)

I've been using the Dolphin HD browser. I like having tabbed browsing for my browsing experience.
I have tried basically every browser out there and always come back to stock.
Dolphin is too busy for me. I hate that I can't scroll all the way to the right or left without the stupid bars popping up. The add ons are kind of cool but nothing I can't live without.
Opera was great before my city got 3G but now its just kind of blah. I like pictures and it scales the pictures all weird.
Skyfire was great before we got flash. Its way too buggy and crashed too much for a daily driver.
Fenac (Mozilla) is a great concept but just sucks. Its slow, scales images like Opera but without the speed boost. I really hope they fix it because syncing my tabs with my home pc would be awesome.
And then there is stock. Its not flashy, doesn't try to do anything special, it just works.

Possibly buy why would you want to? Flash will slow your browsing experience down and also drain your battery faster. All of us Android guys know about conserving battery wherever possible.
Or are you trying to watch a site with a ton of...well...videos on your phone? Some of them of an adult nature? If so, they just allow it under the website settings and share which page it is. Everyone I go to hijacks me to brazzermobile and sucks.
And yeah...after my rant in favor of stock browser, I downloaded Dolphin to give it another try. Its not that bad once you disable the stupid righ/left option windows.
I don't understand why Google can't make Chrome integrate with their stock browser better. Why Google...why????
Speaking of those site lol. Is their any way to view the actual desktop version of a website without viewing the mobile version. The website knows that you are on an Android phone. With non-stock ROM's, you could have it spoof as something different. Stock we aren't that lucky.
Stock FTW. It is basically chrome-lite. Not flashy, doesn't do all kinds of crazy, but its fast and simply works. No need for another browser now that we have flash.

[Q] No Text Rewrap on defualt browser?

This is my first non-HtC phone and am quite disappointed and frustrated at the lack of pinch to zoom as well as text rewrapping with the default browser on my GSM Galixy Nexus. I tried other browsers(Chrome, Dolphin HD and Opera)but all with mixed results. Dolphin didn't zoom at all, Crhome did but doesn't rewrap and Opera did both but only on certain sites. What's the deal here? Are HtC phones the only ones on the planet that are capable of performing this no-brainer feature on mobile web browsing, or is there a browser or custom rom that anybody can suggest to me, that will do this for me. Having to squint to read text is no fun and quite headache inducing, and text not fitting the screen properly, all but negates the point of having a large screen if I'm constantly having to zoom left and right to read it all. Thanks ahead of time for anyone willing and able to help remedy this maddening issue.
The text will reflow, you just have to double tap the text after you pinch. Its not like htc that doed it automatically.

Well thankfully after going through a stock 4.0.1 rom to a custom 4.0.2 to now a 4.0.3 rom I finally have the more consistent pinch to zoom capability with the browser. It doesn't rewrap quite as well but at least it does it. I'm curious as to why you and other prefer it not to work like HTC does it? What's the downside to having it rewrap automatically? I'm fine with double tapping to do it too just as long as it does it. But if you can skip that step altogether, why not?

I hate this automatic text wrapping feature. The only time I really use pinch to zoom is when I want to fokus on something "small" and hard to hit like a link (I use double tap to zoom in on a paragraph for reading. I find that much more convenient). When the text automatically rewraps after zooming I almost all the time lose my original zoom target. It's so annoying that I was glad to see that Google only rewrap text on demand.
But I think many like the automatic text rewrap. All I can say is that I'm not one of them.
Just fyi the galaxy nexus works the same as my nexus one. Stock android browser has always functioned like this, its not new. Htc always changed it on their devices.
Well, I've since found a rom where the browser does a little better with the zooming in and rewrapping, so I can finally put that behind me. I guess the tid bit that you mentioned about the stock browser acting that way shouldn't have been too big of a surprise to me. When I had the HD2 with Windows 6.5, I was so excited at the ability to port Android roms to it, so I put one on there based off of a Nexus One rom. The browser acted just as you said. Only roms meant for HTc phones and of course genuine HTC sense roms all acted the way I'm used to. I guess I was just so flabbergasted and frustrated that automatic text rewrapping was either not as in demand by other users I would have imagined, or that HTC had some how weren't allowing others to tweak the browser in that way. Double tapping is a fine and fair compromise though.

You might try giving Chrome Beta a try. In the default ICS browser, double tapping pretty much just zooms you in by a random/arbitrary amount. Chrome Beta acts a little more like the iPhone in that when you double tap on an element (like a paragraph or picture) it zooms to fit that element on screen. Works perfectly IMO.

ANY Browser is Unusable on One X

Hello,
The stock browser on the One X does not work on any medium-heavy website. Pinch to zoom and double tap start stuttering and makes the experience unusable. I then rooted and flashed a couple of different roms but they all offer the exact same issues/experience to me. I have tried Chrome, Dolphin and Opera and they all give me the same issues.
This video on YouTube is EXACTLY how my One X acts with any browser I have installed... I unchecked Fastboot inside settings and that did nothing. Its not Adobe Flash because it stutters even when Flash is uninstalled. I also disabled re-flow of text but the issues persist.
Any ideas on what is the cause of this? This is a huge issue for me because I do not think I have warranty since I bought this phone unlocked from overseas. What can I do?

From my experience, stock browser is very fast and smooth, even browse to xda or other desktop websites are just good.
Dolphin hd performs much the same as stock one, but with 3 dot menu.
Chrome beta is laggy when compared with the two above.
Are you using 3g or WiFi? Which website you experience problem? Let me have a try!

For me browser is lightning. You may have a hardware dud
Its only after I disabled Javascript and Auto-flow that did the browser become a little usable... What would that have anything to do with? If I were to go complete back to stock would that change anything?

I can't said it is 100% smooth, especially when the site is still loading, but sure it is NOT unusable. Zoom and double tap are so smooth after loading complete.

I wonder if your expectation is too high? This is just a phone with limited memory, viewing complex website is not recommended, and navigation is also difficult. You can view the mobile site and the corresponding App if available.
Exactly my point. My galaxy s2 had much better web browsing than this, heck even my Nexus S was better. Its a quad core phone it should handle these website easy.
Edit: Then why are there videos of the One X with butter smooth web browsing on YouTube and others say the same on here? Mine is as bad if not worse than what the video shows. It crashes constantly with new tabs.
Using quad-core not necessary means that it is smoother in viewing a web page. I didn't try other machines you mention, maybe look for others comment on this.

I agree with this, coming from being a long term iOS user the browsers available on Android are SHOCKING!
They are miles away from being as slick as the iOS browser, yes they support flash but lets face it flash on Android is buggy and rubbish anyway.
For usability Android has a long way to go, I never use the browser anymore I just use my iPad for browsing.
i tried the heavy sites like guardian.co.uk and Engadget and they open smoothly and without any shutter what so ever. while loading and even after that
I just checked stock browser on www.engadget.com and it's nothing like on that Youtube video. It's very quick and reflows in a blink of an eye. I was zooming and panning at the same time, as soon as I let go it's reflown almost instantly. I was doing it for few minutes and the way text always reflows to page width is nice and almost instantenous.
I don't know why such big difference in performance between my phone and the video.
P.S. Some browsers don't even allow to pan and zoom at the same time which is a big letdown.
Dolphin here, works flawlessly.

For usability Android has a long way to go, I never use the browser anymore I just use my iPad for browsing.

I can't agree with this. I also own iPhone4, iPod Touch 4 and iPad2, and compare with HOX and Ipad2 on www.engadget.com, I can't feel any difference, yes HOX will have a slight different when you zoom in or out, as the browser will reflow the text, but it takes just a blink.
I also went to an telcom shop to try GSII using stock browser, the result is just the same as HOX.
Don't forget the resolutions are different between the three devices.
OP statement is that any browser is unusuable, I can't agree with this.
I personally feel that Dolphin HD is smoother than stock browser.

Have you watched the YouTube video, specifically when he loads the NY Times webpage? Do you not see that pinching and zoom is extremely cumbersome and delayed. The browser constantly freezes, even scrolling stops working. How can you tell me its supposed to be like this when my original Galaxy S phone is smoother than the One X. Its only after I turn off flash and javascript that it becomes a little more responsive.
@Schriss I have used other HTC One's and that is how its supposed to be. Maybe I am just an isolated case I do not know, thinking of doing a major factory reset and starting all over again.

I didn't watch the whole video, but my browser performs just like the first part of the video, very smooth.
After reading your post, I watch the whole video again, and notice the part about www.nytimes.com, and then I try again in my HOX, to be honest, no problem at all, the browser displays the page very smooth and flawless. I can't see any problem navigating this page.
P.S. I'm using Dolphin HD, Apex launcher instead of Sense. I don't like stock browser because when I scroll down, It will lift up the menu at top and bottom, it is not as friendly and direct as Dolphin.
I just tape how I browse to the nytimes page, you can have a look.

As I hold my iPad2 with left hand to record it, I just look at the iPad screen to navigate, so my finger may not point/press accurately.
It is not 100% smooth, but shouldn't be unusuable?
I find restarting the phone seems to help if the browser becomes laggy. It's strange because sometimes it is lightning quick and other times laggy and non responsive, even on the same web pages. There is no rhyme or reason to it.
