I used to have an s2 and I remember after rooting I could freeze or uninstall something called tethering manager to get free wifi hotspots and tethering. I just rooted my nexus and I was wondering if I could do the same.

On Verizon? Or GSM version?
If you're on GSM you can just use the built-in app no problem.
On Verizon you gotta look it up. I think that the Google Tether app works.
on Verizon

Hi all. Now that Sprint is also going to charge for tethering, is the hotspot hack still worth it? I had planned on tethering my phone with my wifi only galaxy tab 10.1.
Thanks!

What? They blocked tethering apps but have no way to know for sure that you are tethering. So Hotspot away. You can use way more data filling your sd card with movies everyday.

Was looking to join Sprint and get a ET4G but wanted to know if the root tether method still worked and is unlimited since Sprint has put a cap on it?

The cap affects hot spots.
It doesn't it doesn't have anything to do with rooted tethering as that just shares the internet on the phone, which is unlimited.
Would wireless tethering be the same as a hotspot?
I get what he is saying. Android has tethering built in at a OS level. Its always there but Sprint blocks it and adds their own stuff which is monitored. Since root tether makes use of the phones data Sprint can't limit Hotspot since you aren't using it.
It works just fine.
Hey is it ad hoc still or infrastructure on wifi tether

I was wondering, is there a way that I can use free Wifi tethering with my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus?
I have just recently rooted my phone.
Of course! Use Wifi Teather for Root users. You can find it in the Play Store. I use it every day.

Is there a way to make it private so no one randomly connects to it?

They all offer WPA/WPA2 security.
Yeah the settings are great. You can choose the name of the connection, security and even enable per device access. Have fun!

I'm happy I came across this thread, Wi-Fi tether came on the ROM I used on my Revolution, and in a moment of dumb, I never thought to look for it in the market.
I just rooted my Nexus tonight, and I just downloaded this.
Good memories, it's a great app.
I just used wifi tether for the first time yesterday and was honestly surprised at how well it works. Does it have any effect on my data plan?
Some of the custom roms removed the carrier restrictions on the built in wifi tether. Check your rom's forum too.
So I just decided to get a note 2 with Sprint as my provider.
I plan on rooting as soon as I get it (Friday I hope!) After I root I plan on getting tether going.
Since I travel for a living (pilot) I need tethering to avoid crappy hotel wireless.
What is the best tether for root users.
With my old EVO I used wireless tether which worked great.
However I plan on using tether whearever I have a LTE signal. Is LTE tethering apps different that regular tethering?
Thanks!
as of now there is only one way to tether with our phone through a modded version of wireless tether for root users, check the faq to see where to get it

"wireless tethering works now". That's all it says. Where is the link to the mod?
that's on the first question, if you read lower there is a question "is there a way to tether wirelessly?" which has a link

Saw this too "Installed the latest 11/20 build and can confirm the WIFI re-connection issue. Fell back to 11/18, which seems to run perfect.
Maybe it's the fact that my phone is a Sprint GS3. I do see many GS3 owners having the same issue. "
I don't know if the Note 2 has issues with the 11-20 version or if it is only the SGS3. If there are any issues..I would consider trying the 11-18 version.
FoxFi doesn't seem to work on the Verizon version. Problem is that the Verizon version gets locked down so rooting may take a while. Hopefully someone will find one that works.
EDIT: Bluetooth tethering works, but it is a fraction of the speed. 10% at the most.
Edit 2: Been spoiled with Paranoid Android. Looks like root is required for free WiFi tether to work with KitKat devices.
I am not buying this phone until it is rooted because of this.
If there is a workaround, I am 100% buying this thing ASAP.
So... Anyone have some ideas?
No wifi tethering yet, but using FoxFi/PdaNet for USB tethering works fine for me in the meantime. Speed is fine running it that way.
Well excuse me guys but I think I'm missing something here. What's wrong with tethering? The default settings for tethering works fine with me without any other app.

Ops my mistake. I though you meant the feature in general is not working. Now I understand, it's working but with extra subscription while on Verizon. I'm not on the same network so I don't have such issue.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
Regards,
Don't know if it's any use to you but on Three in the UK you have to pay for tethering or it blocks internet until you reboot the phone but I found that it can't detect the computer if you're using a linux distro. Worth a try with a live disk/pen if it's just for browsing etc.

Theoretically if you had root, do you think there's an app that would work in Infrastructure mode? I'm on Sprint so root isn't a problem but I had awful tether problems with my old M7 when it went to KitKat and I had to revert back to keep my old android-wifi-tether install working.
I'm on T-Mobile and purchased clockwork mod tether. DOESN'T work on HTC ONE M8. Would really like to keep this phone but I must have working tether, where I live my cell phone gets better service than the local cable provider!

Have you guys tested this one out: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter
Works great for me on 3UK now that the new tariffs allows only 2GB of tethering. I've done over 5GB this month.

Tmobile gives you 3GB of tethering for free. They don't block the native tethering at all. After you reach the limit, tethering would redirect you to a Tmobile page. Internet services like Dropbox or League of Legends still work even though you've reached the limit. And Facebook, I believe. =.P
But I don't use any tethering apps, and I'm on Tmobile. Is there a reason why you're trying to use ClockworkMod Tether?
EDIT: I forgot, that's on their $20 data plan, the unlimited-no-throttle plan. I don't know how the native tethering works on other plans. Hmm...
