Mytouch Slide on AT&T question

Hello all, I'm about to purchase a Mytouch Slide for use with AT&T, and wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have any issues with anything not working (GPS, SMS/MMS, etc.). I know I won't have AT&T 3G, only EDGE, but I can live with that. I searched but found very llittle on the subject, I'm assuming thats because both this handset, and this section of the forum, is fairly new.
Hopefully I'll be able to learn more about the handset in the next few weeks, and be abe to start helping others around here too. This appears to be a rather productive, professional forum. To that end, I'll say thanks in advance

What exactly are you asking.

So far the only people I know of, that can unlock this Phone is T-Mobile. Also, you must have an account in good standings & be a customer longer than 3 months..

What, really? So, I can't just buy one from, anywhere, and go use it? I'm new to this whole unlocking thing (CDMA background, and I work for a CDMA carrier), so I'm not really sure how the unlocking process even works. I guess that means I'd be much better served purchasing one that is already unlocked?

I'm sorry, I don't understand what your post says. The MyTouch Slide is significantly more than $300 new. It was posted above that they can't be unlocked. Are you stating that infact isn't true, and they can be?

unlocking works the say way it does for CDMA as it does with GSM. The only difference is instead of having to take my GSM phone to my carrier (or call them) to have my ESN number changed to my new unlocked phone like i would have to do with a CDMA phone. I can just pop my SIM card into my new unlocked GSM phone.
Even if you work for a CDMA carrier you should know that. If you work for any cell phone carrier you should know that

I understand the idea behind being able to take my sim card out of one GSM phone, and put it into another. The network looks for the info on your sim, not your ESN/MEID. And honestly, the only carriers that 'unlock' any CDMA phones currently are a couple of the pre-paids (MetroPCS & Cricket) as far as I know. You can't take a Verizon phone to Sprint, or visa versa. I work for a MetroPCS retailer, I know all about flashing CDMA phones to the MetroPCS network, and it's alot more than simply opening it up to be able to be used with anybody. Not to mention needing to use a 3rd-party flashing software that will flash Metro info to the device, as well as extract the MEID from the handset and add it to the MetroPCS database so the MetroPCS activation system will recognize it as a usable handset. So, it's really not a fair comparison.
Regardless, it still leaves my question unanswered. I've never dealt with GSM phones outside of simply buying a new one at the AT&T store. Being able to 'unlock' it to use with any carrier is a new idea to me. So, instead of everybody telling me I'm stupid and that I should know how it works, can ANYBODY point me in the direction of an explanation of what it takes to unlock a GSM phone, what changes need to be made, and why a MyTouch Slide is special WRT it not being able to be unlocked?

Might I ask how you got yours unlocked?

I got mine unlocked from theremoteunlocker.com
Gsm phones are locked via its hardware just like how when you use your pc the bios is software interlayed into your mobo so they could lock it if they wanted to only accept the types of processors they accept e.g tmobile locked their phone (the mobo) to only accept the tmobile simcard (the processor) the unlock code is a delevoper or admin unlock code that removes the simcard lock so you can use any simcard on it

Got it, I just figured that out from reading the website that you said you used. SIGNIFICANTLY easier task than 'unlocking' a CDMA handset. I've already sent them an email, if I can infact get one unlocked, I'll be buying one this week. Thanks!!

Look around on tmobiles website, the have the conditions for giving you a unlock code posted. If you meet the conditions they will email you the unlock code.
I did it with my slide, I called them Friday and they emailed me a unlock code by Monday. Free and easy.

I'm assuming by perfect you're not including 3G since the slide isn't set or rather, doesn't contain the correct radio module to use AT&T's 3G band. Or does it and we're being lied to by the carriers (no surprise there) hmm...

[Q] Making European HTC Desire HD work with AT&T GoPhone

Hi all,
I am not sure what subforum to post it so forgive me if I've chosen wrong...
I have an unlocked HTC Desire HD bought in Europe (Poland in particular). I am currently in US for some time and to my surprise it does not work with AT&T GoPhone SimCard I hoped to use it with. The phone says "no simcard"...
Does anybody here knows what's the reason? Is there a way to correct it (load a different ROM onto the device?)? Or - if it's impossible to fix with AT&T - what are my options for finding a prepaid (I won't be here for a year to justify signing on for a full year contract) card that will work with this phone and have some decent data plan?

Poland uses GSM network and usually in US they use CDMA so it is not possible to use your DHD in US if the carrier uses other network than GSM because the 2 radios are completely different. Not sure if this can be changed but doubt it.

I don't think this is a case.... This phone is AFAIK the same phone in technical terms as HTC Inspire being sold in US. This is a quad-band and is working in US with Polish sim-card in roaming mode (with horrendous prices of course). So this is something with a sim-card and/or radio-software compatibility. I would push for the first one as the phone is saying "no sim-card" signalling problems with recognizing it.

i think your problem lies in the frequencies used by european phones, arent the same as in us... on my old HD2 you could change the freq, but afaik its not possible with android phones... check this chart http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html

Once again - I am afraid it's not that simple... I believe the incompatibility is somewhere at the either sim card (being rigged in some special way by ATT) or radio software. The HTC Desire HD is a quad-band phone accodring to it's specs (I've checked at the GSMArena . COM). I've seen reports on the internet that people managed to run GoPhone simcards on unlocked HTC android-based phones. I just kind find any information about what might be wrong (incompatible) with my handset

RESOLVED!
I managed to google out the information that ATT is somehow locking the GoPhone simcard to the phone it was bundled with. I had to call Customer Support to get it unlocked which they did. Now my Desire HD is properly working with data plan accessible

[Q] Quick question about AT&T 3G

Alright, well my friend has a Desire Z (Bell version) that works with AT&T 3G. We are in New Jersey, getting about 2.5 DL and 0.9 UL.
I'm assuming this is normal and/or good.
Anyway, he had an iPhone 4 originally, so he got a microSIM adapter and put the microSIM into the Desire Z. I think the speeds are good.
He is wondering about getting the media-net plan. However, he has the grandfathered $30 unlimited so doesn't want to risk losing it.
Currently, with the microSIM in the Desire Z, the image for a phone on att.com is a generic phone that isn't colored. It says "Add your device/is this your device". So it changed from the image of iPhone 4 into a generic one, and is asking me to fill in what kind of phone it is.
I am assuming this is a good sign? I have an AT&T phone lying around somewhere, so I can always put the microSIM into that, get the media-net, and THEN put into the Desire Z. However, will this work based on the info I gave?

I am hoping that you tell me in response to the top portion that yes, I can use the media-net plan. If so, all is good.
HOWEVER, is there a way they can figure it out? (I know what happened to the Nexus One users, they got the IMEIs.) Is there a way I can prevent this by flashing a new radio or whatever (rooted Desire Z).
I don't want to change the IMEI obviously.

It should work, but its not a 100% sure thing that AT&T will not be able to figure out you have a smartphone. Basically, if your phone is not AT&T branded, they don't have the IMEI in their database. They don't seem to be able to read what phone my Desire Z is (but I'm on the smartphone data plan, not MediaNet). But its still possible that they can determine you are using a smartphone, or maybe assume so from the amount of data usage.
If they try to put you on a smartphone plan, you can call them and say you have a dumbphone, and see if they can prove otherwise. Worst case, you can slip your SIM back into your old dumbphone and have them remove the data plan or put you back on MediaNet. So its worth at least trying.
I've read at least one Nexus One user, whose phone was being incorrectly read as a Blackberry. Maybe AT&T has now obtained the IMEI numbers for the Nexus One. But also remember that Nexus One is approved for use on AT&T, even if it wasn't sold by them.
Changing your radio doesn't do anthing as far at AT&T being able to read the IMEI. And from what I've read, there is no legal way to change your IMEI (as you may already know).

I have Desire Z with the Media Net plan, but the plan was already on my account when I purchased and device and began using it.
I use anywhere from 500-800mb a month of data and haven't heard anything from AT&T about having to move to a 'smartphone' data plan (I have used a Blackberry Pearl, Bold, HTC Fuze and Nokia E71 under the Media Net plan without hearing from them).
I agree with the above post that its up to them to prove that you're using a smartphone and I'm not sure if they can positively prove that beyond a doubt.
One thing to remember though is that if the Iphone 4 was purchased along with a contract, he is contracted to pay the full data plan for the Iphone until the contract period ends. If he bought it full price or from a 3rd party, then he should be fine.

You aren't required to pay the full data plan for the duration of the contract if you don't have the iPhone 4 anymore. You can simply say you lost it or sold it.

Wish I had known that before! My GF had a 3GS that she lost and was told that whether or not she replaced it with an Iphone, she would have to keep the data plan on her account =/ sounded fishy to me at the time too but we didn't really fight it, just got her a new phone...

[Solved] Bought Captivate Glide, But Data Isn't Working

I just bought a Samsung Captivate Glide from Ebay. Took my AT&T SIM card out of my Rhodium and put it into the SCG, but the data isn't working (just able to make calls).
My Rhodium's SIM is blue and has '3G' printed on it. As the SCG is a 4G device, can it simply be that my SIM needs to be upgraded to a 4G card (is there a difference)? Or can I assume that there is something either wrong with my data connection settings or with the phone itself? Results of my searches keep bringing up a mixed bag of device reviews, how to buy the device or a SIM, etc., so I'm hoping that someone here has some knowledge of this.
Most of the ROMs that I've used for my Rhodium have used carrier provisioning cabs in their ROMs, so I do not know what those settings are to check to see if they are correct in the SCG. I was told that the SCG is NOT unlocked, but that doesn't mean that my settings couldn't use a little tweaking.
Also, in case it matters, I am using the old unlimited $15 'dumb' phone internet for my Rhodium. Could this really be the culprit? Will I have to change my Internet service to the much more expensive 'smart' phone plans in order to use data on my SCG?
If I come across my answer in further searching, I'll update this post to benefit others.

You'll need to either call AT&T support or visit a store. They will need to make some modifications to your account in order for your 3G SIM card to work with AT&T's HSPA+ "4G" frequency. I had the same issue when I got my SCG. I was using an HTC Status, and when I switched the SIM card into the new phone, I was able to only make and receive phone calls. I went to the store and explained the situation, and the guy fixed it for me in 2 minutes.
I originally thought when I first read your post that you were on the unlimited data plan ($30/month), but I see you're on the $15 "dumb" plan. As a result, you'll most likely need to update your data plan to one of their offerings in order to get 4G network connectivity.

as far as the sim card i have no idea but if ur old phone wasnt a "smartphone" then yes u wil prolly have to upgrade to a high data package is why ur data is not working. they have that added internet crap becuz its a 4G even though half their customers dont have it

My current phone (HTC Tilt 2, aka Rhodium) is 3G, which runs Windows Mobile 6.X, but the "dumb phone" Internet plan works. It's been working beautifully for a few years now and I am not about to tip off AT&T to my 'smart phone usage' on a 'dumb phone plan' by complaining that I don't have Internet access on the SCG, so I guess that I'll be restarting my device research again (this sucks! ) and seeking out a 3G Android GSM carrier unlocked phone with a keyboard (MUST!) as my next phone. Jeez, what a waste of time and money.
Well... I guess I got a used, mint condition Samsung Captivate Glide (with extra accessories) to put up for sale then. I am *SO* not willing to double or triple my current cellular costs just to use a 'kind of' 4G phone here in NYC. I have a used LG Quantum (Windows Phone, which I don't think is 4G) that my SIM does work in, but I will probably need to get rid of that, too, if Microsoft doesn't bring USB syncing back in their major upcoming Apollo release (can't sync OTA from work).

To be honest, I'm surprised that AT&T hasn't caught onto the fact that you're using a "dumb" plan with your existing smartphone. It's possible that your older WinMo device isn't registering with AT&T as being a smartphone that requires a data plan for whatever reason, or that you're using an incredibly low amount of data per month that they are simply not bothering to detect your usage.
I can almost guarantee you that, whether you decide to stay with the SCG or try to get another newer unlocked 3G GSM Android phone with keyboard (like the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro, for example), AT&T will eventually realize that you're using a smartphone and will upgrade you to one of their data plans. They are now using deep packet analysis to better gauge the use on their network. Modern Android phones, by their very nature, transmit and send much more data than older devices (e.g., background syncing, advertisements in apps, etc.), so it's unlikely that you'll be able to stay under AT&T's radar for much longer.

I've been on dumbphone 3g for 3 years using non att smartphones. As long as you don't get an ATT branded device, and it has a usable frequency you are golden

I'm actually looking at an unlocked HTC Desire Z right now. Always loved HTC's hardware quality and I'm not that fussed about utilizing 4g anyway, so this is an acceptable upgrade for me (by my standards anyway). As the SCG is 4G, which all of the new phones seem to be, I can't use my MediaNet SIM on it anyway, hence the SCG not working out for me, so it's a moot point really.
I mainly just use my Rhodium's data for email, Facebook, and some web surfing. I've never downloaded music, videos, games, tethered, or synced OTA, so I guess my usage hasn't been flagged in their system. Been on this data service since I got my Kaiser about 4 years ago. I don't expect it to last forever, of course, but would like it to for as long as possible.

So I gave Softbank a chance to bring a good international handset but they are just too involved with Apple they dont have much interest in Android. 2012 summer line up is a joke.
So I decided to buy an unlocked HTC One X. Unfortuntely I need to be in Softbank because all my family is in Softbank. Also I'm a little chicken when it comes to changing APNs and all that unofficially and running the risk of paying a lot of money for data.
So I called Softbank and asked them about getting their SIM for my own handset. The rep was constantly saying that they dont recommend it and I should first bring my handset to them to check. I know they will not pass HOX because its micro sim. Softbank does not support micro sim on this service.
And now I'm stuck with two options:
1) Use my existing silver SIM contract (not pre-paid)
2) MNP to BMobile
I want to ask you guys if any of you have just plugged your SIM (after cutting it) to HOX and it worked? I know 3G data will not work but voice and SMS?
Also, if I do not put a APN and just disable 3G data, would the phone work as normal? I do not want 3G as I'm mostly in a wifi area and I carry a WiMax when I go out.
I would appreacite any information on HOX on Softbank.

I gave my sim card the chop-chop and It's working fine inside the HOX. Go for it man, no problems at all as long as you know where to cut.

I just got my one x today. It's the international unlocked version. I just cut my sim card and put it in and it works perfectly. Don't worry just cut your sim and if you don't need wifi then disable mobile network, it will save you some battery as well.

No problem man. I've had the phone for 5 hours now ( it came from FedEx this afternoon here in the US), no issues at all. It's a very good looking phone. Wifi works very well, screen is AMAZING! I've already installed 2 updates. My phone was on 1.26, then I installed 1.28 and now 1.29.

Well it's funny cause for me, I had the galaxy s 3 preordered since yesterday morning. But they have delays because the supply is short so I bought the one x and got it delivered in 1 day. BUT personally I'm still going to buy the Galaxy S3, itt will be my main phone and this one will be my back up phone. Not to say it isn't as good but I'm more of a Samsung guy I guess. Nevertheless, this HTC one x is a beast! It's reallly the best thing HTC as ever released without a doubt.

I dont have a preference to either, its just that HOX looks better and I like the build than the GS3 plastic frame.
But I'm gonna give it a couple of weeks and see. Its very important that wifi works. Else I have no use from the phone. If the issues seems to persist I might as well go with a GS3.

Either phone you choose you will be happy. But if you're afraid of running into some issues, I think the S3 is a better choice right now. But both are epic phones. Ok I'm going to bed. Take care!

I completely agree, SoftBank's Summer 2012 line-up was not worth waiting for. As of now, I live in Japan, but don't have a Japanese phone and was planning on going with a Galaxy S3 whenever docomo wants to release it... however, I do believe I would like the One X more. Are you certain that if I bought the international version, that it would not work with SoftBank's 3G?

I was originally planning on MNP'ing to Docomo and get a GS3. With the MNP discount it'd been a good deal.
But since my family are on Softbank it'd be cheaper for me to be in SB. Also I'm liking HOX more than GS3. It's one sexy phone. GS3 is more like a slightly modified GN and I'm hating "prebble blue".. what were they thinking!? And I'm not a white phone person.
I\m pretty certain that international unlocked HOX will work on SB, but you will need to have a SIM. SB will not provide you with a SIM for HOX, unless you buy a pre-paid version and use that SIM. I have seen on web that HOX works with SB network, but for 3G data you wil need to find the APN details. The one on the web are for iphone (black sim). I think the APNs are different for silver SIM. I also asked from Expansys and they said HOX works on Softbank, but I cannot guarantee whether they actually know it for a fact. But there is no reason it would not as it supports WCDMA (this will not work on AU though). Let me know if you go for it.

But since my family are on Softbank it'd be cheaper for me to be in SB. Also I'm liking HOX more than GS3. It's one sexy phone. GS3 is more like a slightly modified GN and I'm hating "prebble blue".. what were they thinking!? And I'm not a white phone person.
I\m pretty certain that international unlocked HOX will work on SB, but you will need to have a SIM. SB will not provide you with a SIM for HOX, unless you buy a pre-paid version and use that SIM. I have seen on web that HOX works with SB network, but for 3G data you wil need to find the APN details. The one on the web are for iphone (black sim). I think the APNs are different for silver SIM. I also asked from Expansys and they said HOX works on Softbank, but I cannot guarantee whether they actually know it for a fact. But there is no reason it would not as it supports WCDMA (this will not work on AU though). Let me know if you go for it.

Your first paragraph consists of my exact thoughts and plans, although I have no family here, it seems like my co-workers use either docomo or SoftBank. The only way I'd go with SoftBank however is if 3G on the One X works with their network.
I'm hoping one of my friends still has his SoftBank iPhone microSIM card. If he does, I'm going to ask him to mail it to me, then buy the One X from Amazon and see if it works. According to Wikipedia, SoftBank runs on 1500/2100... the 1500 band that the One X doesn't seem to support. What are your thoughts on that?

I highly doubt HOX will not work on SB network. I use a Desire from SB now and the radio is the same as HOX. I doubt SB changed the baseband of HTC phones. And if the SB iPhone SIM works on HOX, there is no reason for it not to work on HOX. I doubt the frequencies are different for iPhone (black SIM) and other (real smartphones (silver SIM).
BTW, why would you buy from Amazon (Amazon Japan I suppose)? They are little expensive than Expansys and also Expansys offers extended warranty. I'm not sure the warranty of when you buy from Amazon (because I dont think its directly sold from Amazon Japan). I thought if I buy from Exapansys it'll be easier to deal with warranty and other issues (basically because my Japanese is not good).
Also, as difficult as it is, I;m going to hold off buying HOX for couple of weeks, because of the Wifi issues its been having. I'm gonna wait till Expansys get new stocks and also see how these issues turn up in next few weeks.

Actually I was going to get it from Amazon US (even cheaper than Expansys) and either have my mom ship it to me, or have my co-worker bring it back when he takes a business trip to Colorado. Haha

Yes it is. Particularly with earlier models. Worst, it could be well be a hardware issue.

I cut my Softbank silver SIM into Micro.
Enter open.softbank.ne.jp setting in APN.
Get 3G/H, SMS (both sending/receiving), Voice all great.
But I used WiFi most of the time cuz I dont wanna get a huge Data bill from Softbank. Heard so many stories about rumors on the forum.
Still working on MMS setting.

Also, if I do not put a APN and just disable 3G data, would the phone work as normal? I do not want 3G as I'm mostly in a wifi area and I carry a WiMax when I go out.

Could you please give me some more info regarding the phone.
1) I'm also very worried about getting a huge bill and I want 3G data disabled. So what if I dont put the APN address and leave it blank? Will voice/SMS still work?
2) Can you also share how you bought the phone? and also its HW version number. I'm planning on buying through Expansys but seem there service is not that good.
3) Do you have any wifi issues with the phone?

How would I go about getting the SoftBank Unlimited Data (Flat-Rate?) plan if I have neither SoftBank service nor a microSIM? Should I have one of my co-workers say they broke their microSIM card or something and ask SoftBank for a replacement for me to use, or should I sign up for a cheap phone and then change my plan after I sign my contract?
