Hi all , i'm a new windows phone user and i'd like to have an a call reminder app like bln on my samsung galaxy s.
This app it simply let the buttons to light up when you receive a new text, email, or missed call, which means you won’t need to unlock the screen to discover a notification.
If this is not possible maybe you can develop an app that will make the phone ring every tot minutes.
Unfortunately i'm not a devloper and i'm not enought skilled to help... give you an idea is the only thing that i can do !
I think this would be a top seller app !
Is it really that hard to look at your lockscreen? Every new notification is on it!
I know, that this kind of app is a must need at Android, but at WP every new notification is showing clearly at the lockscreen - you don't need to unlock it, just look at it...

i don't understand becouse u have to make polemics... if you are not interested simply don't answear to the post.
Anyway this is the only feature that i miss and well is not the same thing as u described , with this app you can simply watch the phone wherever it is and see if there is some miss notification instead to take the phone and push the button !
that kind of replies I believe it's useless. Anyway, I agree with you. In the dark it is very usefull and even in the daylight. What I thought about, since I have a optimus 7 witch doesn't have lights under phisical buttons, is that a corner of the screen could be highlighted, or even different corners, so that you don't have to lighten your screen every time, especialy when you are in a meeting or something.
it would be nice if we have sound call reminder

there is a similar app on android called no led, i tried it but it was a battery drain becouse even if you light only a screen corner all the screen is on!
yes, I can't believe a call reminder app is not available till now. How can one use the phone without it? even WM6.5 have it, how can a supposedly 'improved' WP system not have it? a sound reminder every few minutes will be fine, I won't be checking on the lock screen every few minutes just to see if I have any missed calls!!

Can either of these simple things be achieved with the Desire?
1) unlock without having to use last button - ie wake up the phone from just a screen tap?
2) have an option to go straight to an event from the lock screen, be that a new sms / email / missed call or whatever other notification I might receive? I don't want to have to press power to unlock, then slide and then navigate through to messages or emails etc.
Oh and while I think about it, can I adjust the sensitivity of the track pad?
All of these things would make it a much better experience!
1) to unlock you have to use a button on top of the phone, no option in the software to unlock with just a screen touch, maybe a third party app would make this possible but not sure.
2)Again this is not something that is included in the default lock screen, you can control the music player from the lock screen but that is about all. A third party option may make what you want possible, not sure if such a solution exists though.
I haven't found any option to adjust the track pad sensitivity but I got used to it fairly quickly and it works just as well as a trackball in my opinion.

Nope. Only things that I can see operable from here is Snooze/Dismiss Alarm and the Music Player. May be more I haven't stumbled across

Again, Not as far as I can See

Bloody 10 Characters...
Oh, and Beaten too by liamw.
on the lock screen, if you've got notifications, you unlock it and then slide down the taskbar and it gives you the notifications that you just click on to open them...or is that not it??
Thanks for replies, seems a shame these simple thinga cannot be achieved in Android.
Sure you can do that eddyos but to my way of thinking that's still too many steps to read a message!
Does anyone else keep hitting the damn full stop instead of space when typing?! Any solutions?
And while I am on a roll sms counter anyone? How do we know when we have reached 160 characters in our txts?
You can do it on the HD2 as the lock slider can be expanded to select the SMS you want to read for example...that was in Sense so perhaps someone will write an app for it once the Desire is rooted...doesn't bother me, tbh

When you get towards the end of a text it says above the send button x/160.
Try expanding the notification tray and THEN locking it. when you unlock the tray will be expanded just one click to get to a message, one click to get back home (home button).
i use handcent and you can rply messages from teh lock screen so that might be what your looking for
Omg the above reply just made me realise I've missed the obvious.
Download SMS Popup. It should do what you want.

Expanding the notification tray has no effect for me. As soon as the Desire is unlocked it's already rolled back up to the top.

Hmmm, not quite what I am after as I do not want to totally replace the in buily application. Running handcent alongside it still means I get notifications in the native app, which I don't want. Thanks for the suggestion though, I may persevere with it!

Bingo! That's pretty much exactly what I am after - even wakes up the phone so no need for the power to unlock each time an sms comes in - thanks
One problem though - is this a bug? When selecting close at the popup window, if 'mark as read' is selected it should do just that, right? Well it's not doing. Any new sms remains in the message app as a new unread sms even after I have selected to close it with the option to mark as read ticked. So I am having to get rid of it twice.
Can anyone confirm this?
The mark as read thing is a bug, used to get it on my G1 although only when replying to SMS (IE I'd reply, the window would close but it would still be in the tray).
You can just clear the tray when you get the time or, search for a similar app.

Yep, I did that but although there was no sound alert, the native messaging app still shows a new message in there when I don't want it to.
bizzare I don't get any notifications from the native app Any more after disabling all notifications in it
is there any apps can make those menu and return keep flashing when missed call or reminder?
I haven't completely understood what you're looking for, but you can try NoLed.
Couple of pixels turn red and circulate randomly in the upper left corner of the screen.
He means can the home and back key flash when there's a notification.
No, not yet, the drivers are being tricky apparently, though they are working on it. NoLed is the best thing for the moment.

u can try flashnotify apps in market
One of the things that I missed on my BlackBerry (and those convenience keys). It would be nice to see the Menu and Back buttons have a "flashing light" effect to them. If anyone's seen the Nokia E71 on standby, you know what I mean. That's polished work there.
I also use noLED. Its in the Market now since 08/11/2010.
Just install and add it as a Widget.

its a shame to have the soft keys display while youre playing a game or watching a video. Any way to make them disappear completely and get a true full screen experience?
i was thinking maybe configuring it so that you gently tap the power button to make them go away(come back) & for normal power button use do a long press instead.
Probably a pointless bump/post from me, but this is something that I'd really like to have too.
Soft buttons sounded cool, but after getting the phone, they seem to be somewhat permanent and not particularly customisable either.
Videos seem to be the only application where they hide, but even then, simply tapping the screen _anywhere_ brings them back up again (even with screen control lock enabled).
I watch videos with subtitles and being a slow reader, tend to pause videos fairly regularly. It's annoying to have the video bounce around when I do so because of the soft buttons popping up.
Really would appreciate if anyone knows of a method to kill these soft buttons!
Yep I would love this as well, an option to enable this feature.
It would auto hide the soft keys, then a swipe up from the bottom will overlay the keys on top of the existing screen (so the app isn't resizing itself - like HD videos do when the keys come back).
Then we can use the full smexy 4.65" screen and real 720p.
it is up to the developer of the app to add the full screen code.
Dice Player was the first to add this and when you play videos, it automatically goes fullscreen and then a tap brings the buttons back.
i don't think that any mod or app could do it. You could probably make a mod that forces them to always hide in landscape, but the problem would be that they're always gone, even when you want them there.

I presume that an app can only indicate that the buttons should be hidden, and really doesn't have much more control than that?
So basically, unusable in games.

Surely there must be some sort of modification (even if it needs to go back to the kernel (forgive my ignorance if I'm totally off)) to allow us to do it?
I can understand that an app is restricted to the API provided to it, which is why I think an OS level mod needs to be done here.
I get it that this could be less convenient / more confusing, so believe that this shouldn't be in a stock ROM, but if I want to mod my phone this way, I should be able to, right?
i would love a rom that has a setting where i can choose certain apps that can hide the buttons on whatever apps i want. that would be awesome. dont know if its possible. especially on slingplayer. its a $30 app which rarely gets updated. who knows when they will update it. its a good thing i sideloaded it and didnt pay for it. i dont see how it can work on games though because tapping the screen is the way to get the buttons there. unless there is some sort of gesture to bring em back. i do think we will see a lot more out of soft buttons but it will take a while.
youtube seemingly does this for me....
I too think its a total waste having the buttons never move or disappear. Its a great concept, but google didnt take advantage of it at all. I just find it wasting space. Would love if they could be hidden.

i don't think so. the code is there to hide them, but in video apps they show back up on simply a touch. The game developers could add code to say that they only come up when you press pause. I don't see why that wouldn't be possible.
on a system level i'm sure it could be done, but as we've both said. it'll be much less convenient and more confusing.
heres an example, what happens if you enable that to play a game full screen, but that game has no exit option. You now have no way out of the game. The only way to get back to your homescreen is to shut off the phone.
so then, another mod would be required, you'd need a link to the home screen from the powermenu.
so your already up to two mods to do something that most people would not want.
The better thing is to just have the keys dim when playing a game like they do in honeycomb, and not just disappear.
i would also like a ability to hide them!
I think it would be cool if the soft keys had a transparent backround maybe the buttons could fade to dots like I have seen them do.

I haven't looked at the API, I'm just going on a hunch from what I've seen how apps react.
For example, if apps had such control over the buttons, why would they still show on touch even if screen control locking is enabled? Just a bug in the application, or perhaps just cannot be done?

Take the example in the first post - erhaps an option to toggle the buttons in the power menu.
One would presume that if you're playing a game, you're not looking to exit it every minute, so it's not like you exactly need a convenient exit button. If the toggle is done through the power menu, then it makes logical sense to go back there if you with to show the buttons again.
Of course, there'll probably be people who forget about where they turned off the buttons, so yes, slightly more confusing to newbies, but if there's a custom mod which allows this type of functionality, it would be really helpful to those who do understand. (after all, if you've gone to the effort to enable such a mod, you're sure to know about it)

I'm not sure about the "two mods" proposition - you can't really have one without the other so I'd think it would be classed as one, but I don't really want to debate about semantics here (neither can I really say anything about low level requirements to perform this mod).
As for most people not wanting it, perhaps, though I think the responses in this thread shows that there are people out there interested in this, and it's not only me. The value proposition is up to someone else to decide though.
Dimming the keys does not enable more screen space, which is the whole point of completely hiding them.
i dont have a problem with them, they hide automatically on things like netflix and need for speed shift...

honestly not sure. could be a bug or how it'd designed. since the galaxy nexus has no other way of letting you control it, most likely it's designed so that theres no way to perminately hide them.
If you added an option in the power menu to show/hide them, then that would make it just one mod. The two mods idea was just one to make them always hide in fullscreen apps, and then another one that would give you a home link in the power menu.
but having a link in the power menu to show/hide the buttons is actually a better idea. assuming it would work. And doing it this way would allow you an easy way to turn them on and off.

This is the closes I can get it to hide, but it's still not full screen on games. Changed the color to black. It blends in with the background, but the highlighted button press is still there. Like hidden buttons.
Using Codename Android 1.0.1 ROM, it has the option to change the color built in, as does AOKP ROM.

first android phone coming from ios for the last many years
1. sms- how do i get notifications? i don't want that little icon on the top taskbar, i want a popup like the iphone so i will immediately know. i don't even get a notification in the lockscreen which i want. also quick reply somehow? same as missed calls, i want a big notification popup
2. contact/sms page- how do i get rid of the picture profile squares? it makes each line so "thick" and takes up too much room
3. quick way to put it to silent/vibrate only mode like iphone?
4. how do you actually exit an app? it seems like when i press any of the softkeys on the bottom (home or back) it just minimizes it and still has it running in the background
5. if i reflash rom, will i lose all my apps and settings? which rom do you suggest?
6. what are the advantages of giving me root access? examples or what i can do?
7. one big feature of iphone ios 5 is group sms, can android group sms with iphone users?
8. must have apps?
1. For SMS popup thing, you can go and download another messaging application like GoSMS from the market and set it's settings.
2. That can't happen, download GoContacts from the market?
3. Hold the volume down button or set a volume toggle on the homescreen
4. Click on multitasking, swipe left or right to close an application.
5. Yes, you will. You can backup all your apps and system data through Titanium Backup from the market, google how to do that. I recommend AOKP.
6. Better speed, stability, customizations etc.
7. No, just download whatsapp
8. Don't know what you'll like
Are you sure you wanted to leave iPhone? There are apps out there to do what you are asking for with pop ups, etc.... there are also SMS apps you can install to replace the standard one. Hands cent comes to mind for that.
To quickly go to vibrate press and hold power button. A window will open with the option for vibrate, airplane mode and power off options....
Hope this helps some what. I've had an iPhone 3G and 4. I came to Android for the freedom of not being locked into Steve Jobs view of how I should use my phone. I don't miss it. Give it time and you should see the same thing.

Oh... forgot. Android is a true multitasking system. Apps will run in background. I have heard if you press the back button instead of home to exit an app it will stop it. Don't know if that is true. Usually the os takes care of the processes for you.

As I believe someone above said, there is no real reason to "kill" apps, or close them down completely.
My understanding is that apps are kept in a suspended state in the background after you back out of them, or hit the home button. They don't really chew any battery or resources, but by keeping them in the RAM the app opens faster the next time you need it, or remembers what you were doing/where you were within the app.
If the phone needs to free up that space for an active app, or services that you are using, then it will close it fully/remove it from RAM to make space and keep the phone running smoothly.
Again, this is my understanding... and if I'm wrong I'm happy to stand corrected by more knowledgeable users.
As for a previous question about what "must have apps", I am a fan of Light Flow (which you can get in a free version) for customising the notification LED.

You're looking at Android from an iOS users perspective. Don't even worry about closing apps. Android is set up to know when to end processes/close apps. Even if you do completely close an app it'll just take longer to start that app when you need it again. Let the OS handle that stuff.

2. how do i get notifications to appear on the lock screen? i hate how the lockscreen just has the time and doesn't show anything else (except that tiny thin taskbar line on top)
3. i want to be able to delete/mark as read/etc emails without actually going into a native app? for example, from that taskbar notification dropdown or preferably from the lockscreen, is there a way to delete an email?
4. when i get a notification or any kind, all i get is a ring and vibrate. i want the screen to turn on and have the notification show (kinda like #2, a popup on lockscreen of what the notification is)

It appears that you want your android phone to be an iPhone. That is something that it will never be. They are two completely different eco systems and are capable of completely different things.
1. Updates are not available for every phone at the same time. Google/Android/Carriers do have an annoying habit of releasing updates to certain phones in certain area's/countries at different times. You will eventually get the notification that an update is ready. Just be patient. With Android, you need to be patient.
2. Personally, i am not sure there is a fluid way to make this happen, however i am sure someone can correct me. There lock screen replacement apps like WidgetLocker but i dont know if they enable large notifications.
3. again, as far as i am aware, there is no way to mark as read or delete an email without actually going into the native application. When the notification comes through you can dismiss it by swiping left or right (like you do in the multi-tasking section) but you will still have to enter the native app to delete or reply.
4. Try SMS pop up, but again, this is not and iPhone...
I saw earlier you asked about Rooting etc... TREAD CAREFULLY. This can be dangerous if you dont understand the terminology and as you have been in such a closed system that is iOS, learn more about Android before going down this road. When you are ready I would keep an eye on the following sites...
i) Androidpolice.com
ii) galaxynexusroot.com (great tutorials and videos)
iii) galaxynexusforum.com (only about the gnex)
Hope this helps

another quick question - everyone talks about oh if you root if you flash and mess up you will get in trouble etc etc, can't you just "reflash" to stock if you screw something up?

Nope, if you brick your phone it won't even boot. How would you "re flash" if you can't get into recovery. You're really trying to run before crawling. Slow it down, read & research you'll be happier at the end of the day.

first android phone coming from ios for the last many years
1. sms- how do i get notifications? i don't want that little icon on the top taskbar, i want a popup like the iphone so i will immediately know. i don't even get a notification in the lockscreen which i want. also quick reply somehow? same as missed calls, i want a big notification popup
2. contact/sms page- how do i get rid of the picture profile squares? it makes each line so "thick" and takes up too much room
3. quick way to put it to silent/vibrate only mode like iphone?
4. how do you actually exit an app? it seems like when i press any of the softkeys on the bottom (home or back) it just minimizes it and still has it running in the background
5. if i reflash rom, will i lose all my apps and settings? which rom do you suggest?
6. what are the advantages of giving me root access? examples or what i can do?
7. one big feature of iphone ios 5 is group sms, can android group sms with iphone users?
8. must have apps?

Install handcent and use it, it has a pop up notification anywhere when you get a text. And it has better options too, and has identical iPhone theme and look. Disable the stock SMS app in its settings.
Use volume down to quickly turn on silent. Better option is to use a dedicated widget from the market. A custom rom has better options though enabled just by holding the power button.
To exit apps you leave it with back button. This let's the os claim that process for free ram. Home button backgrounds an app to multitask. So always leave an app with back button when you're done.

i don't think i'll flash to custom rom until 4.0.5 so i'll have enough time to play with it. more questions
1. speaking of roms, i see 4.0.4 is coming out. i go to settings and try to update but it says non available? is there a quick seamless way to upgrade? also, if i upgrade to stock 4.0.4 will i lose all apps?
2. how do i get notifications to appear on the lock screen? i hate how the lockscreen just has the time and doesn't show anything else (except that tiny thin taskbar line on top)
3. i want to be able to delete/mark as read/etc emails without actually going into a native app? for example, from that taskbar notification dropdown or preferably from the lockscreen, is there a way to delete an email?
4. when i get a notification or any kind, all i get is a ring and vibrate. i want the screen to turn on and have the notification show (kinda like #2, a popup on lockscreen of what the notification is)

2. In the lock screen, you can swipe down the notification bar to see the notifications you have.
3. I don't think there is any way to do that. I think it's a security measure on Google's part so other apps can't "hijack" your email management.
4. Not a direct solution but I would recommend getting the app Light Flow. This lets you customise the LED to light up different colours depending on which type of notification you have. You don't even need to turn the screen on in that case.

You can always go back to stock. Its very difficult to permanently brick a nexus. Its pretty safe as long as you follow directions.
Edit: and for notifications this phone has a colored led light. You can set each notification to different color. Green I have new Google voice, blue I have new text, white is new Gmail, etc.

You're pretty much spot on with that. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. The Galaxy Nexus has a whopping gig a RAM, so the next time you'll need to physically close apps will probably be 2 or 3 years from now. Plus, Android's memory management is much better than iOS'.

Also, for multitasking, just install system panel. Any app you see labeled "cached" is frozen and ready to be opened should you go back to that app. Cached apps are doing nothing, so you don't have to kill them. Just leave them be. You really don't have to kill anything ever. I never do and things work great.
I can't figure out what is setting the lockscreen to glow every so often ... I've yet to time it. It's not my lockscreen, but a new looking thing with the time and missed notifications including current battery life. I actually like it, but can't figure out where to control it. Only started happening today following the software update.

To be a little more detailed, the feature is called quick glance & it is activated by reaching towards the phone (specifically towards the top where the proximity sensor is) when the screen is off.
I also like the feature, but have found that it is not quite sensitive enough. Often I have to wave my hand many times to get it to activate. But it is indeed a nice idea that could potentially save some battery life as it does not require turning on the device & powering the entire screen to check if you have any missed items.
ah - thanks! I must have brushed by the camera or something ... now I see how it works. handy!
