hi all, I'm new in flashing and changing rom.
I tried to flash my desire for BlissMod007 (Sense 3.5 | GB 2.3.5 | A2SD+) by doing this:
-Root with Unrevoked
-Format with partition wizard: ~3500Mo in FAT32 and ~512 Mo in EXT4 by setting Primary for each
-installation of RSK_bravo_4.0.3 in the recovery
When on the phone in the settings: I see that only 55 Mo are still available over ~93 Mo, and as I have a desire it should be a total of 512Mo (stock memory of desire) + 1 Go (on SD card with EXT4). So I'm thinking something went wrong and the A2SD is not activated or something like this.
Could you please help me? Sorry by advance if this is a naive question.
Thanks !!!
As you can see apps from /data/app on sdext in app drawer, script is running ok, system is reading only data partition only for free space, you have only /data/app folder symlinked from sdext, and desire has 512 M all together that means system+cache+data+misc+recovery, you can't have size of sdext included as is not mounted to data, if I'm right

Need to browse that ext partition to see what's there. Mini tool partition wizard should not be used, so if you're lucky it worked but possibly not

Thanks.
Actually how could I browse the SDEXT partition (mine is in EXT4)? I tried ext2explore but didn't work. I tried again minitool but it doesnt see the partition anymore. What to be used instead of Minitool to format in ext4 (Rom manager doesn't work on my phone): i tried EaseUS Partition Master but the software under Seven doesn't see the EXT partition done first time with Minitool.
Where should be installed the Apps normally (because I don't see them in the SDCARD nor elsewhere with Astro)?
thanks!
Im using Es file explorer... go to setting and tick root explorer and if you want to change something in /system you need to tick mount file system

Thanks Kotag: just to understand, I did what you said with ES file explorer. Now where should I look at to see if the EXT4 A2SD is activated/used?
Thanks again

That was answer how you can browse your sdext... so start es explorer hit back button once and find folder sdext
now you browsing your ext partition on sd...
to see your a2sd script you need to go /system/etc/init.d
there should be file with number (usually 40) and a2sd

ok. So it worked with Astro (not ES File Explorer.. strange):
I can see the "sd-ext" folder, which is empty at that time, no file inside. When I right click on the folder, then detail, I can see Free space for this peripheric = 423 Mo and total space ~1Go, that's what I put when formatting the EXT4 partition with minitool. I don't understand why I see nothing in the folder but there is some space used. Could you tell me why?
For a2sd script: 40a2sd file is there!
Thanks again.
did you tick root explorer in es explorer settings? it will ask for superuser permision click yes it should be ok as you rooted
Or download qtadb and connect phone to pc via usb you should be able to browse phone folders

Yes ticked, only able to see the Sdcard.
Does my previous answer help you to understand what's happening? (I have done what you were requested but with Astro )
when you see sd card hit back button once or go folder up, you will see where and how are folder connected together

ok so current structure is :
/MNT/SDCARD
or at root: /sd-ext which is empty and I still don't understand why there is space allocated to a empty folder.
just downloaded astro, im in the same situation /sdext empty but definately working under es explorer with root explorer ticked in settings

Done! Es explored re installed and that works!
So I can see the sdext folder: I can see App, App_s, app-private folders. I can see my apps inside those folders.
What does it mean so? working good? If yes How can I see the remaining space for installing apps?
Thanks again!
I use quick system info for checking the free space of my sd-ext.
Edit:
And I think that it should be working. You should be able to see if it is working when checking the free space of the sd-ext.

As I said before, system is checking free space on data partition, unless you will mount sdext as data (like data2sd script). 3rd party apps can see it.

Worked good with quick system info! I can see 350 Meg remaining over 1 go. How android decides to install apps in sdext or on the data partition ?
No one got the answer? Thx!

That's a very odd question. you can install applications using the android market or if you have apk files download generic file browser and use it to install the apps.
apps that i heve on my memory card..

vapk files download a generic file browser and
use it to install the apps.
Oi file manager should do the trick.
Astro file manager does the job as well
And AstroZIP too...
But I've a question: is there a way to install an .apk file using just the terminal shell?
I.e.: if I've not Internet access and the build I use have not a burned in file manager...
I know, I can use an androidupdate.tar but suppose I've no way to build it up and have the .apk on the sdcard, from a previous download...

i believe you're using haret to run android from SD card, unpack androidinstall with 7zip, copy file browser app .apk into /system/app/ (etc. astro file browser), repack it and then install again with haret. now you can use file browser to install apps on SD.
or :
use terminal to copy file .apk into /data/app/ , reboot android
alternatively, taken from DirectMatrix post (not tested):
put .apk in your sd card root to easily find it then run command as below,
su
busybox install /sdcard/yourapp.apk /sd-ext/app
Oh... I suppose this is an answer to my curiosity too
Yes, I know... it'd be sufficient I googled for a while but, as I said, mine was a question arose at the time I was writing...
CU
---- EDIT ---- EDIT ---- EDIT ----
Ok, just tried...
New to this world and with just a little little little bit of knowledge about UNIX-Linux, maybe I did a mistake but:
copying the .apk in /data/app and resetting did the job instead using busybox didn't
As I can see having a look to busybox docs, the install command with no other parameters just copies the file so you can do the same with:
su
cp /sdcard/yourapp.apk /sd-ext/app
More... if I understood well, sd-ext is the application repository used if you enable apps2sd and if you have not (I don't, at present time, as I'm testing...) the method doesn't work...
Correct?
Apps2SD requires an ext3 partition on the SD card, and if you only have ext2 or fat32 it does not work.
hi im using LeeDrOiD_V2.1a_A2SD , is there any way to force apps to be run from the system memory instead of the sdcard, as far as i can tell it automatically goes to the sdcard?
would prefer to use the system memory for security software such as wavesecure?
thanks
John
Yes to run it from the system partition so it can not be removed the regular way, you just have to move the apk file from /sd-ext/app/ to /system/app/
This can be done using adb commands when in recovery or by applying the s-off hack and use an app like root explorer.
thanks
the apk file was in the folder /system/sd/app
and root explorer let me enable r/w access in it, without enabling s-off
i'm hoping i did it right
:-0
thanks again
John
Well you might be able to do it this way without s-off but it is not actually on the system partition. It depends on what Rom you are using.
But are you able to uninstall it using the settings menu?
it still gives me the option to uninstall yes, but at this point i just wanted to get it running off the phones memory, rather than off the sd card
thanks
John
ok it turns out root explorer didn't copy them over, so i copied them over with adb commands , and wavesecure doesn't show up as uninstallable

yeah, most of the programs out there (like root explorer) won't throw out an error if they can'y mount it as R/W... because HTC was clever enough to hide that it can't be mounted RW without S-off
Am wondering if there is a application or something that gives me access to /data while the phone is booted into the OS.
I know i can mount /data from recovery and remove/add files and stuff from there, but am wondering if this is possible to do while the phone is booted into the OS?

You need to flash the modified Hboot by AlphaRev to provide you with S-OFF (Securiy Off) for NAND unlock and to provide you with full root access, while the phone is powered on (booted into the OS). Search the Desire Android Development section of the forum.
Okay, let's say i do this, how do i access /data when am booted into the OS then?
Depending on what you want to do, you can use a File Explorer app to make modifications while the OS is running, and use apps like MetaMorph that require full system privileges to make r/w changes to the system partition, for example.
EDIT: Here is the thread I was referring to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794314
Well i've tried out s-off, and it looks like i can see the content on the /system folder with Astro, but the Data folder is empty, but i know there should be an bootanimation.zip file there, as i've seen it while the /data was mounted in recovery.
Maybe i need another file explorer than Astro? Or?

What to do is, download EStrong File Explorer from the Marketplace. Once installed, open EStrong File Explorer and select the Menu button, then choose 'Settings'. Scroll down to 'Root Options' and select it. In Root Options, enable Root Explorer and choose the relevant option. Also choose the 'Mount File System' option as the /system partition was in read-only mode before and the files were hidden. Now, when you go to /data/local (i think), here you will find the location of the bootanimation.zip
Didn't work, looks like i have to have a CM rom or HiAPK rom. Any other idea?
And thanks for the help so far =)
Edit: There is an app in the market that's called "Root Explorer" that says it should give me access to the "elusive /data" folder, maybe that will work?
You don't need to be s-off to access /data. Or at least I didn't have to be.
Try putting bootanimation.zip in /data/local anyway and see if it works.
This overrides the existing bootanimation that is stored elsewhere.

Trying out a different rom, and bought Root Explorer and now am able to see the content in the /data folder at least.
Using the latest Axiom ROM I ran into a problem where I can't download into the 'Download' folder of the SD card. It's the default location for the stock browser to download into.
I can pick the save location easily with the opera browser, but don't know how with the stock browser.
Anyway it seems that somehow with the last Axiom flash a new folder also named "download" was created on my SD card.
One is spelled 'download' and one is spelled 'Download'. One is empty and one has weird contents that isn't readable by most file file managers. That one is actually my original one.
I can't delete either one, and I can't download programs into 'download' from the stock Browser. (did manage to delete both with Root Explorer, the original remerged, contacts intact, upon a reboot)
So I want to format my SD card partition.
I tried Clockwork partition SD card. and it didn't work.
I tried resetting all user data from within the Android OS and it didn't do anything to the SD card partition either.
I'm looking for the ADB command to do it.
I found a command to do it on the Hero, G2 touch. It's :
First, on your phone, go into Home -> Settings -> SD card & phone storage, then click on "Unmount SD card"
Then, in your shell, do the following.
Code:
adb shell
mkfs.vfat /dev/block//vold/179:1

Nope, root explorer shows one empty file, and the original 'download' is shown as a systems file or whatever is designated by a piece of paper with a yellow shield with a star in the lower left corner. But root explorer can't open any of the contents using any of the options from 'Text Viewer' through 'Rar Viewer'.
I just deleted both of those folders using Root Explorer.
But then I still couldn't save from the stock browser. 'Download failed'.
Then I rebooted and the original 'Download' folder was present with all previous contents intact. I was able to successfully download to it.
Which leaves the original question.
How do you format the SD card partition?
If you don't care about your user data you could lock the bootloader and then unlock it again.
go to the android revolution hd thread and look up the "super wipe" scripts. There is a full and lite version. Although it appears the full version is not yet released. The difference is the full version wipes data/media folder(Virtual sd card).

Not sure why you are so negative about the Q/A section.. I personally go through it multiple times a day and try to answer everything I can.. if you want to delete it then relock and unlock your boot loader. That would be the easiest.

Yes as droidstyle said there isn't any SD "partition" in our GN. The /sdcard/ is actually a link to /data/media, means that they are in the same partition and the storage are being shared. So it is not possible to "format" the SD "partition".
Do not try the old methods, it is not a 179:1 device.
sorry to bring up a dead thread, but if i do the lock/unlock trick while running a custom rom, am i going to be able to boot the phone back up? Will i need to have Android SDK ready to go so i can flash CWM and flash a rom?

Easiest procedure, no need to relock/unlock bootloader:
- 'fastboot erase userdata'

That's kinda obvious, since all you're doing is relocking the bootloader. Even when unlocking, only thing fastboot does is erase userdata and unlocking the bootloader itself. It doesn't touch /system, boot.img (the rom itself).

sdcard is a virtual card and is located in the data/media folder. You can use something like root explorer and make any necessary changes there and they will be in sdcard.

Several people have reported the issue with screen shot, to fix it they've had to rename the pictures folder(Seems like the folder is read only).

If you have any directories/files that you can't modify or delete, then boot into CWM recovery, plug in the USB cable, go into adb shell. Also make sure that /data is mounted in the CWM mounts menu. Then:
cd /data/media
chown -R media_rw.media_rw *
root explorer delete failed

i'm having this crazy "delete failed" error every time i try to delete any file in sdcart, external, and root directory (copy-paste, root, permissions works fine )
i tried to delete any remains of root explorer with es file explorer ((which works fine btw so its not a problem of partitions i think), re installed the program again but its the same . Flashed the rom from the beginning with a full wipe but its the same
this error happened first when i updated from blackmart alpha to some rootexplorer v.99. I uninstalled that but it left this error
Any idea what is causing that
I'm very curious and would appreciate it
thanks
