That's a very odd question. you can install applications using the android market or if you have apk files download generic file browser and use it to install the apps.

vapk files download a generic file browser and
use it to install the apps.
Oi file manager should do the trick.
Astro file manager does the job as well
And AstroZIP too...
But I've a question: is there a way to install an .apk file using just the terminal shell?
I.e.: if I've not Internet access and the build I use have not a burned in file manager...
I know, I can use an androidupdate.tar but suppose I've no way to build it up and have the .apk on the sdcard, from a previous download...

i believe you're using haret to run android from SD card, unpack androidinstall with 7zip, copy file browser app .apk into /system/app/ (etc. astro file browser), repack it and then install again with haret. now you can use file browser to install apps on SD.
or :
use terminal to copy file .apk into /data/app/ , reboot android
alternatively, taken from DirectMatrix post (not tested):
put .apk in your sd card root to easily find it then run command as below,
su
busybox install /sdcard/yourapp.apk /sd-ext/app
Oh... I suppose this is an answer to my curiosity too
Yes, I know... it'd be sufficient I googled for a while but, as I said, mine was a question arose at the time I was writing...
CU
---- EDIT ---- EDIT ---- EDIT ----
Ok, just tried...
New to this world and with just a little little little bit of knowledge about UNIX-Linux, maybe I did a mistake but:
copying the .apk in /data/app and resetting did the job instead using busybox didn't
As I can see having a look to busybox docs, the install command with no other parameters just copies the file so you can do the same with:
su
cp /sdcard/yourapp.apk /sd-ext/app
More... if I understood well, sd-ext is the application repository used if you enable apps2sd and if you have not (I don't, at present time, as I'm testing...) the method doesn't work...
Correct?
Apps2SD requires an ext3 partition on the SD card, and if you only have ext2 or fat32 it does not work.

Theoretically, this method eliminates the need for using GParted or any Linux Ubuntu to install Neopeek android ports (or XDandroid if babijoee decides release Ext2 ) Partition within Windows.

I have also found a program (shareware) that can open, add files, and recompress tar.gz files (especially androidinstall.tar.gz) I have tried using 7-zip, Win-Zip, and Win-Rar to do this but Winrar and Winzip will not allow me to do thos. 7-zip just gives me a memory allocation error.
Normally, you would have to install .apk files one by one which is time consuming but by adding the apk files you want to install to the directory /sdcard/npkinstall/androidinstall.tar.gz/data/apps , you can save time and it will automatically install it when you run install.exe or when you first install a neopeek android port onto your device.
The program name is "PowerArchiver"

I am going to use this video on my site if you don't mind!?!? Some users still have problems to get an EXT2 partition working! Especially windows users have this kind of problems! Anyway thank you for sharing this. Great work!

I could add apk into the tar.gz with total commander with installed bzip plugin.
i didnt try to install the new androidinstall, but next time i'll add some apps before installing.
I haven't tried total commander for PC with the bzip plugin but I'm sure its a better method than using PowerArchiver but it works both ways.
I also tried G-zip but it wasn't very noob friendly.

Yes, but to my knowledge you can only run one neopeek build.
I basically have a folder called "Androids" and then I have several builds in their own folders. You just have to adjust the startup.txt in each to reflect the folder location.
Oh and if you're having problems dual booting windows mobile and neopeek builds with GEN.Y dual boot (not dual booting 2 android builds though) follow this link..

did u mean by adding rel_path=XXXXXXXX on the startup.txt? i will give it a try to store neopeek build and xdandroid build on same sd card this way.
by the way, i already dual booting my winmo and android but i just can't resist the temptation to try latest android build by xandroid and noepeek. they both awesome

You add "rel_path=path/to/android" to the cmdline section... This would be if the build was 3 folders deep from the root. If you just have Android say in a folder 'andboot' off of the root of the SD, your statement would read "rel_path=andboot" - make sense?
You also realize this has absolutely nothing to do with the builds that require an ext2 partition right? It's just a way to organize multiple builds of Android, but only the "normal" builds that don't require an ext2 partition.
How about the 8 gigabyte sd memory?
I understand 2G sd rom format, but when I format 8G sd as you showen with my own size, android phone could not distinguish it exactly. Could you explain about the 8G sd card?

From what i know on the sd card there must be 3 partition:ext2 and swap have to be always the same size (EXT2: about 350 mb and SWAP: 64 mb) and the fat32 one has to be the free space should be something like 6.5-7gb on 8 gb card,
What problem do you experience?

Great! Thanks e334, updating rootfs.img in Neopeek's ROMs should now be easier with your how to guide.
Do you think it should deserve a new thread instead of using this "howto format ..." thread? If I may, would suggest something like [Howto] Update rootfs.img in Neopeek ROMs. "Older ROMs" do not apply to XDAndroid ROMs because updating those even if older is straightforward.
Ok.. I will do that then..
thanks! mod may now delete off-topic post's from this thread ... including this & my previous post.

My Desire's ROM is full. I have rooted the phone and using root explorer to remove garbage from the ROM. There are many apps in /system/app. Each app has a .apk file and an .odex file. Is it safe to move the *.apk files to my sd card to save up space? Or are they needed to run the application?
Thanx

Think you may need to read a fair few of the posts in the forum if you are asking is it safe to remove apk's.
A fair answer is yes and no.
Some you can some you can't.
Removing the wrong ones will cause havoc with your phone.
Why not try flashing one of the custom Roms on here.
Thanx Raze.
I believe that the operating system either *needs* or *doesent need* an apk file in the system/app folder for the app to function correctly.
My question is: Does android 2.2 *need* or *not need* the .apk file of an app to exist in the /system/app folder in order for the app to function correctly? Isnt the odex file enough?
Since apk's are package files, my impression was that maybe they are not needed after the app is installed.
deleted .apk file = uninstalled app
deleted important.apk file = havoc on your phone

You won't get any advantage from that; freeing space on the system storage partition won't lead you to have more room for your apps on the internal storage of your device: those are two different partitions. If you want more space on the internal storage partition you should flash a custom, resized partition table (you need s-off, look on the related topic for the howto) and (if you didn't do that yet) partition your sd, so that you can use a2sd scripts to move your stuff there. That's the best you can do if you wanna have more room for your apps, everything else won't help much imo

My understanding (please correct me if i am wrong as i am so used to windows phone) is that the odex file is simply the integrity of the apk. lots of roms now are de-odexed so you can push or zip-flash a file into its place and it will still function. if the rom still has the odex files this is not possible as the phone will check the apk against the odex file and bootloop. The apk is the install package and the woking part of the file itself. Your best bet would be to flash a rom with A2SD installed in it. This accesses a fat3 partition on your sd card which the android os sees as extra internal space. I'm running LeeDroid 2.2d A2SD version. I have more apps installed now than when i was on a stock rom (motonav, psx4droid, angry birds, snesoid etc) and my phone still says i have 85mb or 52% of my space left
Thank you guys, now it is clear.
I keep getting a storage space low warning on my Desire, and I am trying to find out how to free up some space. My phone is rooted, my sd is partitioned, and most of my apps are installed on the SD with apps2sd.
Any apps still installed on the phone do not support installing on the SD. I have removed almost all apps and left only a very few that cannot be moved.
EDIT: Just realized that HTC Mail data was taking up 65mb of the phone memory.... deleted it and now my phone can breathe again
you are rooted? well if you use a2Ext you dont have to move your Apps to SD.

i put the .apk file in the sd card and access it with file explorer in the mobile.
how can i install the .apk file directly to sd card instead of installing it in the mobile storage?
thanks
I don't think it's possible, but what you can do is install it normally and and then use Application Manager to move it to SD. (Apps to SD or a2sd)
Perhaps you already know this so sorry if i'm preaching to the quior!
Of course the ROM has to support this as well as the App. If i remember correctly i think this was supported officially from 2.2 onward. (Froyo). Custom ROMs, especially Cyanogenmods, usually have this feature working out of the box.
so is there anyway of doing it up to today?
Of course. It's called a2sd.

Hi here an odd way by the way:
as far as I know in the mixui10ml (as a custom rom 4 xperia ray search 4 it)there is such ability but u should unzip it and find and test apk files and install them to find out which one do such thing
I personally do other work ... copy all apk file in to my new downloaded custom rom and replace them and it works great!
and i should that point this apk isnt like apk2sd & other silly apk... it added in to system as a property and automatically run whenever an apk install.
its the only *(hard but real) way* that i find by searching in 2 years!!! sorry 4 my poor EN just want to help!
at last I find the name of that apk!!: "package installer.apk"!
Hi!! I update to 4.4 official fro 4.1 rooted and unlocked bootloader via mobile tool. After that my photos, music, downloads e.t.c is nowhere! I still have my apps, too. I installed again cwm and from there i saw that there is one partition with current system and one partition where my photos, music e.t.c exist...Is there any way to get rid of second partition and move my files to the new system partition?
Your files are in root folder/data/media just download a file manager that supports rooted divices like root explorer give superuser rights and paste all your data to storage file

Hello,
It's my first post
Since i've updated my galaxy tab S from android 4 to android 5, I detected that i haven't the right to write on the sd card and in some case, to delete file (ie with mx player)
In order to resolve this problem, i found a topic on internet that resolved my issue
Step 1: Using a file explorer with root access capabilities like Root Explorer, navigate to /system/etc/permissions folder. Make sure you have r/w access
Step 2: Find the platform.xml file and open it using a text editor. If you are using Root explorer, long press on the platform.xml file and select Open With -> Text editor to open the file in a text editor. Now, find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission in the file.
Step 3: Add the following line on a new line under the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission without the quotes – “<group gid=”media_rw” />”.
Step 4: Save the file and restart your device
After this, you will be able to use your sdcard as you always used it

Yes, cause you'll modify a file that is in the system folder
There is no need for messing with it at all on Lollipop. SD card access is granted on a per app basis.
It's up to the app developers to update their apps to support the SD card changes made in Lollipop, in MX player's case, the newest beta has that new lollipop api implemented, thus full SD card access.
