Amazing battery life on 4.0.4 - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I flashed Paul's 4.0.4 ROM a few days ago and my battery life has greatly improved. I wouldn't normally make a new thread about something like this but I've seen a lot of people complain about poor battery life. Hopefully this ROM helps others as much as it helped me. The ROM is still in beta but it's surprisingly stable.
I always keep my brightness at 40%

Easily doable with WiFi

But.. Your screen on time is only an hour.

Maybe so, but neither stock nor 4.0.3 with Franco's kernel has been able to achieve amazingly long idle time and still handle hours of screen time.

Yeah, that's pretty low for a day and a half worth of usage. We already know that the Galaxy Nexus idles like a champ.

He still has 60% left so he's still got a lot of usage out of that charge. Could be looking at 2 days at that rate but yeah you don't really use the phone that much do you.

Very true, but I could never go 24 hours with only one hour of screen on time.. Do you want to share some tips or specifics? Wifi? Whats syncing? Any special apps you are using? Or do you atribute it all to the ROM like you said?

I've seen as low as 0-1% battery lost over 8 hours of sleeping before. So that plus WiFi for a full day isn't hard. I've been at 75% battery before with a full 24+ hours used but it was on Wifi with little screen usage and minimal things like texting and short calls and not much else.

I've managed 2 hours 40 minutes screen on time over 42 hours with eight percent left leaving brightness on auto, using AOKP and Franco 16.2.
I think that's pretty decent.

I second this, another thing is half the time people forget to mention their on AT&T not on Verizon, and they compare their 2 day battery life on GSM to an LTE phone...
My biggest battery hog is exchange syncing every 15 minutes, and with that and LTE with nothing but stock apps in the background I can get 2, 2 1/2 hours of on screen time within a day

sorry but, if i'm not wrong the "screen on" define how much you are actively using you device
Honestly, what you are syncing / connectivity won't affect your screen on time much. The Screen is just too battery hungry.
I did get 5+ hours of screen time with AOKP / james bond...but I cheated. Reading books, white text black background.

no i know that, but i just wanted to let everyone know what was set up on my phone. my idle is fine, but if i can increase my screen on time, it would be happy. over WIFI its perfect but using it on 3g, SUCKS it right down bad.
so i would like to see your screen on times, with rom/kernal combos. im on Francos latest now.i was on lean, but it seemed to drain faster
Still haven't got much over 2.5 hours, but I do make a lot of calls and usually my screen on time is more video streaming/gaming so I guess that factors in to the battery life a bit more. AOKP m4/Lean
Sorry, what was the question? the ROM part i understand but what is "Kernal" ?
It also depends on how you use the screen. I'm sure I could get 7 hours all in one shot, but am choked if I don't get 4+ hours over 2 days.
3/4G uses more power than wifi, so you should see more screen on time when connected to a wifi network than on data.
My favourite ROMs: CM9 /w it's stock kernel, or BAMF with Lean kernel. Each ROM has customizable auto-brightness levels; can have a big impact if you use auto frequently.
The below shots are 90% on wifi, the rest on data.

What's your signal strength when you're on data? Data + bad signal will drain you fast no matter what you do.

5 hours was mostly from XDA, games and web browsing. I am on a Toro GNex. I limit my syncs to every 15 min, clock 350/1200 hotplugged. And I frequently monitor my wake locks and per app battery drain to insure a healthy battery life and to make sure my device sleeps like a baby. Normally if I'm using the device throughout the day with 4g data on and no wifi, I get 3-4 hours.
***edit: I do have the 2150 mA extended battery. Its not much but it does give a small bump.

Lol, the system is obviously not resetting itself.....or it was kept on idle (doubtful)...or the dude messing with the phones internal clock. Either way, nice try.

This is mine. Mostly Wi-Fi, I keep my screen on auto brightness, that was with AOKP B27 and Imoseyon's v2.5.0 experimental kernel, 230-1200Mhz, HotplugX with the stock battery.
I'd say on average I get anywhere between 4 to 5 hours. I've never gone to 0 battery, usually plug it in around 8 or 9%. Screen is usually auto or 50%, playing games on and off, cruising the store looking for good apps. I also monitor for apps running and kill stray apps.
AOKP with FuguMod kernel.

1.5 hour battery life

Battery life goes down 1% every minute the screen is on... This is rediculous. I'm running the latest franco kernel + liquid rom.
Uhhh cool story? Use your phone an entire day and post your battery stats when you're at < 5% battery left. Then we can talk about your actual battery life...
Let me bite this troll bait.
I'm sure this phone doesn't last 1.5hours, i'm sure mine doesn't.

Which kernels besides franco give good battery life?
If you're getting 1.5 hours battery life then you're NOT using your phone, period. This is a smart phone, if you can manager more than 1 hour then you probably should have kept your StarTAC.
Edit: read a few more posts, wasn't troll bait it turns out.
As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, wakelocks are one avenue to explore. Install Better Battery Stats and follow the instructions/procedures, etc... from its thread here on XDA.

If you are on 3g/4g and a verizon nexus on stock battery...2 hrs screen time is normal. Get used to it. Sorry. My wife's on stock 4.0.2 does exactly that. Pathetic. We bought an extended battery. Still might get in the 4 hour range. I love the nexus but damn the battery is terrible. I get 6-7 hrs screen on time on my maxx using 3g/4g. Today she got close to 4 hrs but it was a 4g/Wi-Fi mix.
Verizon nexus on 3g gets around 2 hrs screen on time if you actually are using data and keeping everything synced like a smartphone should be able to do.

Why don't you make a list of each rom you want to try, then take the time to flash each one and run each for about a week. Since battery life and performance is directly related to each users set up and personal style of use. This way in about 4 or 5 weeks you can actually make a determination on your own as to what is best for you.

In the middle of the graph, it goes from red all the way up to ~85%. The green bar below the graph also shows how long it's been charging which is DEFINITELY not 30 seconds.
best battery life is very subjective to the user. and remember that the display on this phone is power hungry to say the least. i hope that very soon all phones will come out with non removable batteries. people that need extra power can carry a portable power pack instead of an extra battery. and for those who complain about the longevity of the battery have obviously never used a phone with built in battery or done their research and are simply relying on that crutch of being able to swap the battery just because they can.
WOW...anyway....my point when i started this was that no one can tell you what works best for you...you have to figure that out on your own.

You can clearly see the green charging bar in the middle, not to mention the fact that battery graphs don't go up by themselves.

is in fact what I would do with this thread is to gather a bit 'of screen and then publish them on the start page so as to assist new users in selecting the ROM according to their needs, then of course every result will be based on usage of 'but if you can get many statistics can make an average of everyone!

Day 2 from full charge to 6% I had 17 hrs 10 mins
Don't seem to have any rogue apps from battery monitors I've tried which makes sense as I've only downloaded about 10 apps.
Always have WiFi and GPS on which I always do on any phone, and have auto brightness off and set manually to just under half way.
I have dropbox set up to automatically upload camera pictures but under battery monitor this only uses 0.5% of battery use.
I also seem to have a faulty S Pen which sometimes seems too sensitive as it'll draw or open menus/apps with the pen about 1cm from the screen, and other times the pen doesn't recognise the air/hover mode and I have to press firmly to draw.
Any ideas?
Between this and the over sensitive S Pen, I'm beginning to think I just have a faulty phone!?
If it was as easy as taking it to a store I would, but I received it free with a 2 year contract from an online company in the UK called Affordable Mobiles who seem to have pretty good reviews. They've said if I want an exchange or them to have a look at it I'd have to send it back and wait 2-3 days which I can't do really as I don't have a spare phone - but at the same time I don't want to start rooting the phone and messing about with launchers if it is a fault.
Thanks
Turn off gps. Thats sucking away your battery mate. Turn it on only when u need it.

IMO, to get more than 1 day with WiFi & GPS constantly on is good. On my Note 2, I am usually left with around 30% of battery left at the end of the day but I never have GPS turned on unless I need it, only my WiFi is on.

Try resetting the phone and check it for another day without installing any third party apps if it gives the same result that it must be a faulty phone. Hope it helps.

You should judge your battery stats from your screen on time. Regular usage with sync and wifi and data enabled should get you between 5 and 8 hours, but it's possible to reach 10 and beyond with low brightness and no connectivity. If it's below 4, you can start thinking that something is wrong if you didn't do any crazy gps navigation or something, and start from there.

Well, mine can lasts up to 2 days with Wifi turned on when I'm awake. Also I have roughly 5 hours screen on time on average. Quite achievable with heavy debloating of the ROM and using custom kernel and probably with some undervolting done too.
P/S it's my first Android. Still learning. Please correct if I'm wrong :fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
So far on my third day I have 10% left with 1d 5h on battery and 5h 13m screen on time.
Regarding issue I mentioned about the S Pen, Samsung are sending me a new one to try and rule out the phone
nothind wrong with your battery 5 hours screen on is good don't worry everything is fine

First day? You might try a couple of charges before hiding it. It's not terrible. About 4 hours of screen on in 21 hours is not that bad for first charge.
I notice from the screenshot that your 4G reception is pretty poor (only 1 bar). The radio is by far, the biggest drainer of battery life. So that being considered, your battery life isn't bad.

It's going to be more efficient on Wifi. Low signal won't do much, but when it has to constantly search it drains fast.
Here's mine, had it since April 1st and the battery has been consistent.
Doesn't my held awake time seem high? It's higher then my screen on time all I did on the phone today was text, go on Facebook on and off and browse the Web a bit

I have the same problem with my New M8 which I just bought 2 weeks ago.
My situation is the fully charged battery will drain out 20% of power after 6hours sleep. I am pretty sure I turned off all apps before going to bed.

Battery savings can be had by making sure the display brightness is set to auto. Tbh your battery drain looks normal. There's loads of stuff going on the background when WiFi is on. You can cut some of it down by turning WiFi off when you don't need it and going to your account settings and unchecking some of the sync items you don't need.
I find the battery life suprisingly good considering how long I have the screen on sometimes. I've had full days out of it with constant use . Normal use I'll get 2 days easy.
Also I find this the best battery monitor app. The easy to read timeline graph shows exactly when and where the drain is. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...edium=organic&utm_term=battery+monitor+widget

I keep brightness almost all the way down due to sensitive eyes, and I have nothing syncing

So you unchecked all the sync options for your Google account?

Convert to GPE and install a custom kernel and you will get much better battery.

I only get 3 hours tops of screen on time. Seems too little, from what I've been reading. I have wifi, mobile data and GPS always on and mostly use 4g since I don't have wifi at work. Is this normal?
