Overzealous task killing - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Has anyone noticed that tasks tend to get auto killed a bit overzealously on ICS? I'm running 4.0.2 on mine. On many apps, if I switch to the browser to look at even one single page, I flip back only to find that the app I was just in has been killed, and it's loading from scratch. This was never the case for me on Gingerbread (CM7.1 stable, Glacier). Any thoughts?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk

Yes this phone has way too agressive task killing. Its been discussed already. The browser for example gets kicked from memory very quickly and too frequently. Sometimes i press the home button and go right back to the browser and it was killed. I really hope google tweaks it.

I kill apps after using them anyway, never have any open in the 'Recent apps' as I like to keep it clean

Same here...

I did take a glance at memory usage. It could be in part because I'm using Nova Launcher, Light Flow,SwiftKey X and Tasker... If enough apps that think they're important are competing for memory, the OS could be making misguided choices on what to kill.

Can you clarify what you mean by this?

I dont have a vast knowledge of how it works, I have done it on my Captivate and Atrix but have not had the need yet to do it on Nexus. This app is about the extent of what I know. Give it a try. When you find some values you like post back here what they are. And if you require more information you can always do a search or a Google search.
Here is the YouTube video for the app.

This is what ive been meaning to do, just been lazy. It may be the only way to fix this.

Thanks I'll take a look at it. It's minfree (not mini), which makes more sense as I presume it stands for "minimum free" memory.

Just tried experimenting with minfreemanager and i have excellent results so far with the following:
Change the last 3 values (free version only) to 46, 48, 50. So here are my values:
29, 37, 44, 46, 48, 50
This keeps things in memory much better and longer so the browser for example doesnt get kicked out of memory so often.

Actually i had to go more aggressive. I used the preset called system default.

My understanding was that aggressive in the context of that app meant leave more memory open / let the system kill more tasks. If you want tasks to actually stay open, you'd have to go less aggressive.

Well in my case i dont want apps killed so easily. So the lower the numbers the better. This means that more apps will be left open. So i guess youre right i should have said less aggressive.

Autokiller memory optimizer.

Hi i found an app called auto killer memory which ive been running for a while. this app has worked wonders for my wilderbeast, its on fire. so ive been tampering alot with things but this seems to have stabalised my phone loads. presets i set to lost, enabled advance mode, apply at boot, ticked all system tweaks and of course when promted enabled super user. my phone is now running sweet and battery has improved too. i dont know if this makes any sense but i have noticed a difference. whoop whoop. am i over optimistic that this works the same as the v6 super charger/juwes ram optimiser ???
Ok I've ammended my settings within this app after doing some research And in memory values I'm now running at 6/10/16/100/120/160 to keep my phone running snappppppy. To explain the values in brief...... if free memory goes below 160mb my phone starts to kill empty apps etc etc as free memory goes below next value the phone starts to kill corresponding apps. Kind of makes sense to me now. Ok I know my settings makes the phone kill more frequently but its damn snappy now,and it can lower the oom settings by long pressing the app in processes section you wish to lower and choosing lower oom. Lowering the oom basically gives the app less chance of being killed.
Personally I haven't had a low memory situation since I rooted and installed cm7, the app your talking about I have installed after reading one of your other posts about it, I presume that it would work the same way as juwes after setting the low memory values, I don't use those settings with it though as I have juwes script installed, the other tweaks seem fine but again I think I had some of them covered from editing my build.prop (still have work to do on that though) and a few other little things, I can't knock this app though as it does seem to have made my battery last a bit longer since installing yesterday, I'd personally rather change the settings myself than have yet another app doing it for me but until I figure which setting seems to be helping my battery out I'll keep it installed.
A couple of other apps which might help you keep it smooth,
Autostarts- I swear by this app its one of my best buys from the market, why use a task killer when you can just stop the app starting in the first place??
Fast reboot pro- after time apps hold memory which they don't really need, hit this and it'll quickly reboot everything (unless you tell it to leave something alone) freeing up spare ram.

Cheers for info, really happy with this app at the moment.by the sounds of things its doing similar job to other script mods, which I can't get working cos of s - off issue. Posted this for s on users benefit. Hope it helps others.
Edit my settings. Read 1st post.

The only problems I see with having higher settings are if it closes something you use regular it'll be slower to open that app, I'd rather keep them set low and have apps open quickly.

I agree but this app lets you temporary lower the oom level for apps,so I just lower oom on most important. Long click on process or service and to lower.

Yep,long click app in service or process then choose to lower oom.it resets if you reboot so get your settings desired then leave by pressing home button.

Change the view from pages to mb and these are the values when it will start killing processes etc. Ie. When your memory gets to the amount your phone starts freeing up starting with the highest setting (empty apps)
Its all explained above, just that you have the pages view instead of mbs.
Quote " its healthy to have enemies, it means you've stood up for something you believe in "
ahh the pagesettings are the same as the MB ones?
i thought its two different things
thanks for the explanation!
btw. do you still use the same settings?
Yes to this day I still use this app even though I'm now s-off with the settings I posted,I will just double check and ammend if needed on 1st post.

I used to use that too and I felt some differance too but I think you have to open the program every boot. But some told me that it isn't just powerful as Supercharger so I deleted the optimiser and tried Supercharged and got a bootloop instead. I didn't get it to work but I believe that Supercharger is a better solution.

i tried supercharger and juuwes but had issues which i think were specific to me but one of the issues was bootlooping from supercharger as well as other things. im not saying one is better than the other but as you and myself had issues with one of the mods then its an alternative for others to use. i prefer this as you get to control the settings and mods yourself from the app. also this is available for s-on whilst the others i believe need s-off.

I got a boot loop from supercharger. I had to wipe my phone and start again from an RUU as all my previous backups became corrupted. Nightmare. TBH in the few days that it did work, i saw/felt no difference.
Using CM_7.1.0.1 probably wouldnt advise to use the supercharge, CM_7 minfree values are set to a pretty good level to keep things in order i think

I have tried supercharge script and does make phone smooth. Also Ive use ram manager new app and that too made phone smooth. But this app (Pro) is so far great. I tried out your settings for now to see if it suits me and had the app for an hour and the phone is very snappy and smooth (which is most important to me). I hope there is a slight battery improvement that many have said on the net but will test more and will leave feed back. A big thx m8!
no probs mate, like i said i have tried the lot and this one for me is really good and you get to be the controller lol.the only drawback i have noticed is that it takes a little longer for the phone to boot after a reboot but !!!!! im ok with that.
LMFAO looks like I didn't pay enough attention... I've used a lot of tweaks already to make my Willy faster, more snappy and stable but to be honest nothing gave it such a boost like that
BTW: are you still using the settings of the op?

I see. I just have to sort things out now. Regarding the SD card read - I have it already done by sdbooster (@2048) - I'm at a point where I should make a documentation to stay on track and to avoid double tweaks lol.
I'm also very interested into scratch's build.prop lol (guess that would help to drop even more tweaks). Thx again - I've not forgotten about your tip re. AMO - just shifted it too far lol.

AutoKiller apps - Prons vs Cons

I don't know very well in deep Android os, I'm wondering if the apps that automatic close unused process can help the phone and the battery or only damage the normal kernel work.
NO. Don't use auto task killers. Please.
If you MUST know whats running, use something like WatchDog, which lets you keep an eye on wary tasks, but doesn't kill anything unless you specifically say so. Although you can do this manually with the built-in Android one, WatchDog gives you extra tools to use.
Task Killers have been horribly misused and not at all required since Android 2.2.
Nay on task killer. Android does pretty well on it's own.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Auto killer isn't a task killer. It tweaks android's default values for killing tasks.
This is the only "task killer" I would say doesn't hurt the system itself.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Check the dev options in settings. You can adjust some of the settings there.

Yes. Let's go "optimizing" the system by killing tasks and tweaking system thresholds without any metrics what so ever, besides saying "it feels smoother" (after a full reboot with no new apps loaded, but lets not mention that. it sounds less awesome).
That sounds all so very scientific and I am all for it.

[Q] task killers?

Hey, I noticed that in the screenshots section that everyone has a task killer, aren't they bad for android? I've read that they were needed for android 2.1 and down, not after Froyo.
So, do I need one? Why? Why not?
Thanks guys.

samsung roms (even stock) have default task killer called "Task Manager", for active apps and if you go to Settings > Applications > Running Services, you can kill apps running in the background or cached processes. The difference is, the default tasker does not have a "Kill All" feature.
Task killer is, well not recommended, because Android has "Low memory Killer" feature, which, from the word itself, Android will kill apps as memory is needed.
It's still up to you if you want the default tasker, or a 3rd party one.
I hate that Samsung put that there. I've always been told that you let android do its job, unless there is a runaway process.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using XDA
If you ask me a task killer gets you more battery life and helps reduce data usage by killing apps that you are not acctually using.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using XDA
yes but even if you kill some apps they reopen on their own. I am referring to the stock Rogers rom and that dam AP program.
the reason task killers are considered bad is becausw most people blindly kill everything. your phone has a lot of tasks it will automatically relaunch, thus wasting more processor time in the end. if you pay attention to which processes these are and exclude them from your kill list, you can safely use a task killer.
i also suggest apps like autostarts, lots of stuff like to start that dont need to.
im newly registered but not new here! just picked up a glide yesterday and put cwm/osi on already. a keyboard is a must for me and this was the nicest phone i found with one. my d1 was overdue for retirement. i use sipgate/google voice for free calling, texts and vms (wifi) so thankfully carrier didnt matter. very happy with this thing so far. cant wait to see some ics roms?
Advanced task killer shows you which apps automatically restart and lets you disable them from being killed
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using XDA
Automated task killers generally are bad voodoo because they interfere with Android's own memory management system. Android micromanages memory like you wouldn't believe, and task killers will only slow things down by interfering with it. In particular, you'll lose significant performance and battery life as the phone works harder to reopen apps that could have just been sitting around in otherwise unused memory as intended by the OS. (And of course, the auto-re-open thing mentioned above.) I used to keep a task killer on my OG to troubleshoot misbehaving apps (sometimes killing the process and forcing it to restart would right some issues), but now that Android has the running services dialog, there really is no need for task killers at all.

It was an excellent phone. Mine finally locked up the other night while I was out and totally died. Doesn't even get the M Moto symbol when you start it up. It had been dropped countless times, entirely submerged in a puddle, whiskey spilled on it. But it soldiered on until the other night. I was even running a very broken ICS ROM (dead project now) on it and it was just as fast CM7. I ran it constantly at 1GHz which impressive for a phone that was stock 550Mhz. Most phones, even the Glide, you can't overclock by more than double like the D1. The fastest kernel I ever had on it, I had edited a version of ChevyNo1's 1.2Ghz kernel to allow 1.3Ghz. I ran it like that for a few days and it was stable.
Great phone. It truly deserves a burial at sea with a 21 gun salute.

task killers / managers

hi guys...is it true that task killers/managers would decrease battery life or even slow down the system? i'm using advance task manager pro...i simply dun like to hv those apps running in the background (facebook, line, etc) so i kill them all the time...will this effect my phone's battery life and performance?
Close them and they will reopen, so you are using your CPU to reopen the apps. Just uninstall Facebook already, use the web version, they look the same. Better still, socialize with real people.

No. Uninstall it because it will actually make your system unstable. Android already is very efficient in it's memory usage so don't worry. It will kill it by itself if need be. I used to believe in then a lot until I learned the real truth and experienced the benefits myself. You'll be amazed how little it does.

Ever since android evolved from running on phones with sub 128MB of ram, task killers have been unneeded, the LMK (low memory killer) has also got smarter about what it kills.
Unused ram is wasted ram (as afaik the phone cant turn of individual sections of ram, it's all on or off, and even then, the power required to refresh it to keep the data around is minimal compared to how much it costs to hit the flash and pull the apk into ram again).
The facebook app is junk, use a 3rd party one or turn sync off and live with the drainage.

[SHARE] Battery Saving Techniques!

NOTE: Im turning this into a sharing thread where everybody can post and share their techniques on how they save battery consumption. I'll quote all the useful suggestions here in the first post
I would like to start off by saying that all ROMs basically consume badly just like the stock version. There could be little to no differences between them with regards to battery performance. Right now I would like to share my observation, on what I presume to be one of the best ways to save battery while maintaining good performance.
glennlevi's Technique:
1. Get Antutu Battery Saver Pro (Free version can be found in the market). Install and untick the option control cpu speed.
2. Using No Frills CPU, or any other built-in cpu settings app, select your default governor (bcm####) and sio as your I/O scheduler. Maximum Frequency should be your highest available, and Minimum Frequency your lowest available.
3. Manually adjust screen brightness in settings to about 20%.
4. Untick Background Data and Auto Sync in settings, under Accounts and Sync Settings.
5. Get Ram Booster (Free in market) and install. Open. Under settings, set Boost Level to aggresive, set whitelist apps and tick your launcher, sms app, keyboard, and Ram Booster and Antutu Battery Saver. Untick Show Overlay Widget in Overlay Widget Settings. Enable the widget in the notification bar, refresh every 5s, Report Style Dont Show. Under Advanced Settings, set Feedback to None. Clean Ram using this app everytime just before you turn off your screen or want to stop using your phone.
6. Drag down your notification bar and tap the Ram Booster Notification. Now wait a couple of mins while browsing through your phone (without opening any apps)
*You can use other task killers if you want, but Ram Booster is the best IMO. A better replacement however is 360 launcher's cleaner widget (which will save more memory, ram and battery usage since its all in one app)
7. Open settings and go to Applications>Running Processes and look at all running apps, you will see some auto-start apps like Beats Audio, DSP Manager, Google Mail, Google Maps, Google Playstore and others. Uninstall all user apps that have autostarted. Download Titanium Backup and use it to uninstall stock bloatware, like google maps and google mail, or other custom bloatware like Beats Audio (If you dont use them at all). Clean Dalvik Cache using Titanium Backup and Clean Cache using Ram Booster. Freeze seldom used apps like Google Playstore. Just unfreeze when you want to use them.
*You can use other apps like Root Uninstaller to remove system apps, but IMO Titanium Backup is the easiest to use and has one of the most functions.

The best way to save battery is really to know your fone.
1. any type of widget should be avoided( except maybe clock) as they are juice hoggers.
2. ANY app that suggest or implies that they save battery defeats their own purpose for they themselves consume battery life...figures.
3. ANY app that has "killer" attached to it isn't really helpful because most of the app be it user or system just restarts after. Same goes for anything with "booster"..
4. Ram cleaner should suffice
5. keep most settings to a minimum.
6. Accept the fact that our little fone has one crappy battery construction..

i do. well, not full kernel, just kernel module. search bacem-tweak in dev section. but i find that the best thing you can do to save battery is keep your phone sleep as long as possible. that's means remove bloatware, limit installed app with service, and only turn data/wifi when needed. combine with undervoltage, usually i got 3-4 days in single charge. in some very rare condition i got 6-7 days.

First off I would like to quote myself -
"Right now I would like to share my observation, on what I presume to be one of the best ways to save battery while maintaining good performance."
As such, Im sharing this because
1. I think it might help other people.
2. I've tried it and compared it many times in many different rom, and what I recommend is based from my own experience
3. I know youre a dev. Im not, obviously. That doesnt mean I cant share what I think is useful. This is also backed up by the fact that Im not claiming Im sure that these actually work and that I can back it up with additional information. Again, this is just based on my experience.
again I would like to repeat the quotation from myself:
"Right now I would like to share my observation, on what I presume to be one of the best ways to save battery while maintaining good performance."
There you go. I hope that clears it all up. So please dont pick on me or anything just because Im not a dev. Thank you.
nope...I never intended to pick on you. I'm just feeding up my curiosity. I'm sorry if you feel like that.
thanks for sharing we need tat support...other be frank..be opened for sharing..

Well, thanks anyways for noticing my thread. Now I know some of my suggestions may be far from the theoretical facts that you know, but there are times when actually testing something and comparing it with others yield better results than just looking up the figures. Thats just my take on it though, so Im not saying thats all there is to it.
Anyway, maybe I'll edit this thread and make it a SHARING THREAD instead. I'll just regularly view it and put all suggestions that other members have in the first post

6. Accept the fact that our little fone has one crappy battery construction..
good tutorial
I will try it
Thanks

not that crap if you realize it's 2011 android phone with $120 price. right now with that money you can find a lot better phone, but in late of 2011 there is only few choice on that price range.
Please share your battery saving techniques and tips here! I will add the good ones on the first post with quotation.
Probably when there are already a lot, I will compile all tips to make one big guide which has been contributed by the whole community. Lets work together on this

hmm... seems legit
Cant argue with you on that, most apps are generally glorified task managers, there are a few good ones though.
That's why i'm planning to buy a new android this christmas, maybe S1 or S2 depending on my budget.
wonder why no one want to make a battery saver kernel than superspeed kernel...

i do. well, not full kernel, just kernel module. search bacem-tweak in dev section. but i find that the best thing you can do to save battery is keep your phone sleep as long as possible. that's means remove bloatware, limit installed app with service, and only turn data/wifi when needed. combine with undervoltage, usually i got 3-4 days in single charge. in some very rare condition i got 6-7 days.

Sir i want to ask you onething, offtopic, in nexus there is no memorycard slot, so we have to keep all data including gallery files and even a new rom in phone memory. If we want to flash a new rom, then how can we do that? While we wipe the data and cache before flashing all data will be deleted? The rom file too?.
