SGS2 return to stock - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I have bought the SGS2 of CL. I didn't check when i got it but it was rooted.
As much as loved my rooted Vibrant, i kinda want to return my SGS2 back to stock.
It came with Juggernaut 3.7 and Bullet 1.8 v2.7b #42
No i am afraid of flashing other kernels or roms over this because i haven't researched it enough.
I have some experience with ODIN from the Vibrant Days'
But if some one could point me out to the right files to USE with ODIN or tutorial to change it back to stock it would be greatly appreciated.
The reason why i decided to go to stock is because text messages SMS are acting funky.
I send a text, and it stays in the status "Sending..." for ever, even though my friends received the text messages. When i reboot my phone, it sends all those texts stuck in "Sending .. " mode all over again.
Is there a fix for this ?
Dose Juggernaut 4.1 have a fix for this?

Read. A lot. Search the forums, you should have no trouble finding a thread about returning to stock.
For material, check out sammobile.com, there you'll find all of the stock ROMs you could wish for.

no need to go back to stock, just flash a new rom.
here's the stuff for odin: drivers, odin, cwm http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
flash this using odin to get back to stock everything! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350360
but just flash a new rom using CWM and you're good to go. no need to use odin anymore after being rooted

don't read that.. thats for i9100, it has some general info about odin, but a lot of it has i9100 stuff that will confuse you.
i9100 stuff will brick your phone... so stick with t989 stuff only

Ok will boot to recovery tonight and flash Juggernaut 4.1 tonight. I will give that a shot.
I didn't read much about the Kernel but i got the impression that Only Juggernaut works with Bullet Kernel.
Am i wrong?

wrong, every kernel but the CM7 titled ones will work with juggernaut. they're all touchwiz based kernels so all of those will work. darkside recommended or faux's.. eugene's kernel is on another website... but the two mentioned are great kernels.
other kernels like synergy is a hit or miss. every device is different.

Throw the darkside kernel on juggs and you will be lovin it!! Best kernel out right now!!

[Q] Would really like some help on flashing back to DK28

Im writing this for my brother, he has an Epic that he just updated to E18. So after a few days we both found out that the OTA update was horrible and he just wants to go back to the way his phone use to be with the DK28. Im pretty familiar with flashing because im always flashing ROMs on my Milestone. Ive tried the Odin but the computer is just not reading my phone for nothing, yes I have installed the drivers and all that but still no luck. Im looking for an easy way to root and be able to just flash an update.zip. I would really like some help because everything im trying isnt working. Thanks in advance.
When you plugged it in, you had the phone in download mode before you hooked it up, correct? (Hold "1" + power)
Samsung Epic ViperROM 4.0.4 Genocide kernel
In all the directions it tells me to put the phone in download mode then plug it up.
Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
Try to reset the computer, I've read that sometime this helps, let me know how that goes.

I have tried it numerous times since lastnight where since the the computer has been turned off...that was just with odin. If I can root it and then just load flashable zips that would be fine too.

If you look up "Epic 4g cookbook" under the developers section, it will be a post by BThomas, it will have a link to a 1 click root and recovery in there. It will also have every current rom for the epic there, be sure to thank him if it helps.

Try a different USB port
Reinstall Samsung drivers.
Try using a better quality micro USB cable, the stock one isn't reliable for some people.

Agree with the last suggestion. The stock cable is not of good quality. I thought I was having problems with my USB ports because I wasn't getting much response when flashing and attempting to transfer files.. But my daughters cable from a camera fit and when using it, everything worked great again.
If you are using win7 64 bit then get to a vista 32 bit machine and odin will see ur phone. This is what i had to resort too.

Now im just a little confused on how to load up a rom. Are they flashable zips like others or what? getting nervous now lol.
I guess my question is if his phone is working fine with EB13, why go back to DK28? EB13 is pretty much the exact same as EB13, except EB13 has a couple big fixes. If anything, you will be downgrading. I could understand going back to DI18, but going back to DK28 just doesn't make any sense to me??

Well basically back to whatever is was before the update. Idk which version it was exactly. EB13 has way too many bugs on his phone that's why he wanted to take it back to where it was before the update.

[Q] [Help] Girlfriend wants root

Hello all... Recently my girlfriend and I had purchased the Epic Touch 4g for her. She absolutely loves the phone but the signal strength isn't the best. I have had a Droid 1 for 2 years now and have flashed roms/kernels on a weekly basis for the past year and a half. Can anyone recommend a good starter Rom/Kernel? Is flashing a rom/kernel for the Epic Touch just as easy as flashing for the Droid? I've done some research and I am a bit overwelmed. It seems like clockworkmod recovery is being ran on the Epic Touch but the process for flashing is different? (maybe not, but like I said, I'm a tad overwelmed ).. Also, are there any tweaks after root that would improve signal strength? If anyone can help me out to get us started I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
-Mike
I recommend starburst rom v1.6.. it comes with LostKernel which is a good kernel to use.. for root though, there are dif. methods, i originally rooted mine with Zedomax Kernel through Odin.. fairly easy .. so get it rooted, and i'd go with starburst v1.6 which when flashing it through CWM once you have root, also flashes the lostkernel
I recommend Starburst. Runs sooo smooth and its the only ROM that I see being actively updated. Viper just got into the game so if you don't like touchwiz, you can flash his ROM too which uses another launcher but i would say equally great. Comes down to preference and what works best.
And to get root and clockwork, I followed bubbys
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1287776
It seems to get root you have to use odin, but once thats done you can use clockwork to flash ROMs. If you get issues Odin is there for support.
Thanks! Too bad my girlfriend starts work in an hour
Take a look at this thread Id really recommend to check the links I have linked to save you some pain....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309078
So wait... after reading that thread it says that the bootloader keeps a record of everytime you flash with Odin? So if something happens to her phone and we need to take it in, they will know we rooted it?
A good reason to use starbursts rom is because its just way smoother some how and he stream lined the rom and did a bunch of tweaks that make noticably fast/smoother. That's the reason most are using it

Cool, thanks, I got worried for a little bit there... I mean, we got it rooted and everything just fine, but I failed to mention to my girlfriend that there might be a slight problem if we tried to take the phone in ... I figured that problem would get solved eventually but it's good to know I'm in the clear
yeah I wouldn't worry about it, chances are if you flash everything stock theres still a counter chances are they wont notice or pay it much attention. its possible but, I've had friends take their evo in with security off and everything else flashed stock and it was ok.
Bring her to me I will root her. Don't bring your cable I will use mine to plug in her smoothly in order to root through odin.

You can use a jig, it will get rid of the yellow triangle on bootscreen and bring the counter down to zero.
The jig costs $7 MAX, all you do is plug it into microusb while phone is on, and the phone reboots automatically, and everything is back to normal. Process takes about 30 seconds max, and you can use the jig multiple times, with how many ever samsung phones, it is NOT a one time use deal.

After you have downloaded the zip, extract it into it's separate files. Then use Heimdall 1.1.1 (frontend) and put the individual files in the right boxes. Put your tab in download mode (volume down/power on) and flash.
If you want to add dsb9938's overclocked kernel to this, download his Galaxy Cubed 3 ROM on this thread and flash just the kernel. If you want his CWM recovery, flash that too. But don't flash the other files if you want to keep the stock EI04.
You will end up with a stock, rooted ROM with an overclocked (1.6) kernel and a CWM recovery to do nandroid backups and flash mods. Sweet.
D, you are awesome! Thank you.
CW Recovery
Tried flashing (with heimdall) your kernel & recovery from Cubed 3 onto this stock/rooted but I bootlooped - is there something I'm doing wrong?
Also, assuming I'm able to get at least the clockwork recovery flashed, is there a way i can get the CW App you have on the Cubed Roms?
Thanks as always for the great support -

Far as I know it should work. Might have to wipe. I know people have donew the kernel, can't see why recovery would be an issue. Maybe a bad flash?
As for the app, it was made by chainfire, search for it.

Thanks - I'll give it another shot - and yes, I know, google is my friend ...
To verify,
In FactoryFS I place system.rfs
In Kernal (zImage) I place zImage
In Param.lfs I place Param.lfs
Leave Primary and secondary bootloader slots empty.
In cache I place chache.rfs
Leave database, modem and recovery empty.
Correct? Or does recovery get a copy of system.rfs?
---------- Post added at 06:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:34 PM ----------
Note that my goal is to get back to stock so that I can exchange this. I rooted and changed ROM because of the FCs I was getting in machine gun speed since I did the 2.3 OTA. I tried flashing Cubed 3 in hopes that I could get out of my issue, but there seems to be more going on here than a software issue.
I need to get pure stock, and complete a waranty exchange.

This is FABULOUS - Now My GTab is a Useful Tool, Not Just a Plaything
Thanks, dsb9938, for your time and energy put into this Stock+Root Vanilla for Verizon CDMA GTabs! I'm not into playing with different ROMs, and am limited by where I live to Verizon as my carrier, so I was thrilled to find this thread - Root without the learning curve of a different ROM.
Thanks also, to leapinlar for his input - after the holidays, maybe I'll play with overclocking. And, I sent thanks to Glass Echidna for Heimdall and their helpful instructions; this was my first Root (although I'd purchased a rooted cheapie prior to the GTab), but I felt very confident.
I did the Root last night, using Hiemdall 1.1.1 Suite, and it went without a hitch. I was so excited that I stayed up all night, getting Titanium Back-Up Pro wrapped around all my precious apps and data, re-installing, etc.
It's great to know that I can go back to "stock stock" if needed but, in the meantime, get rid of piles of bloatware. I'm an old "mainframe dinosaur" - it's good to get system-level control of my technology, once again. My main thrill, so far, is that I've been able to freeze the stock calendar & contacts in favour of useful ones - eliminating redundancy. Oh - and being able to back up data with apks is a huge relief....
The point of my Thanks to you? I did not WANT "bells & whistles" - just a streamlined machine - and that's exactly what you have given me. I sure hope that you will be creating vanilla stock+roots for many future versions. In just 24 hours, you've had a most positive effect on the efficiency of both my personal and business lives, and I wanted to let you know.
"There is No Free Lunch": I sent a donation (not nearly enough to cover the benefits I received, ) to acknowledge your excellent work. I hope that everyone who benefits from your work does the same....
Can it be used on Sprint Galaxy Tab?
Thanks.

[Q] Boot hang after flashing using Odin back to stock rooted

Hello all,
I am facing problems with my SIII right now. I was running AOKP but due to the bluetooth not being able to sync with my stereo, I decided to go back to stock rooted. I just flashed back the stock rooted image using Odin, but now my phone sits at the Samsung screen with the blue notification light on. I have tried rebooting, and it gets to this point (after the rethink possible screen) and just sits. I am thinking another flash in Odin is in order? Is there a stock, non root image I can flash via odin? I am just really lost for ideas right now and any input would be appreciated! Thanks!
Update:
I tried flashing with odin again and this time I got a failed. It was in the process of flashing the "system". I am kinda starting to freak out. I am hoping that it's just the file I'm using (though it just worked not even a few days ago.) I am trying again and if this one bombs out, I think I am going to try a different file. The one I am downloading to try next is the "stock unroot" from the how-to video. Anyone have any luck with this?
Another Update:
I just re-flashed with odin, this time it says it successfully completed but once again it's stuck at the flashing Samsung logo with the indicator led on.... I am starting to really freak out lol. I have another file downloading that is supposedly just stock, no root or anything...

I've always noticed the LED being on during boot (or some of the boot) and it was also on when I had a bootloop during cm9 so I don't think it means anything.

Correction : Used that link you had posted, it was still stuck so I loaded up the toolkit and used option 20 for reboot options to force it into default recovery, wiped data & cache from there and let it reboot, it seemed to have hung but waited a few minutes and it came back to life. Back to complete stock here now, hope it works for you.

Should have explained a bit better. Yes that toolkit
While it was stuck at samsung screen.
1 For AT&T (Obviously)
20 For reboot options
1 For recovery.
Then wipe data/cache
Then wiped cache (no idea why)
then rebooted.
When i did an Odin to stock I also froze on the Samsung logo. I had to boot to recovery and do a factory reset I side recovery to get it to boot. Keep in mind everything will be deleted though

That is exelent. I am downloading the toolkit right now and will report back shortly.
Once you got it to boot, did you still have root? I am wondering if you flashing the "stock rom" that I posted, if that had any impact. I have only pushed the root66 file, so I am expecting root when(if XD) I get this thing going again. I appreciate you being more thorough with your instructions, and will report back with my results as soon as I get some
Also, are we loners on this? I am not seeing any other posts about going back to stock/stock rooted from modded roms using odin? I am trying to figure out the best method to go back to stock. I made a nandroid and I am sure that would work, but all of this word about having to flash different kernels and bluetooth/wifi drivers to get stock working properly makes me wonder if just using odin is the easiest method, as it restores everything on the phone (to my knowledge).

NP sir. We all have to start somewhere. Luckily for me I was already planning on doing a full wipe so I backed up everything I wanted to keep from my phone onto my computer before using odin.
I seem to be having the same issue. I've downloaded the toolkit as you guys have suggested. are you guys in download mode on the phone while you use this? it seems to want me to be in debugging mode and i can't get to that. I've tried a factory reset with no luck.

[Q] why is the stock att rom the only one nobody has?

After being an iphoner right from the get-go, (jailbreaker of course), i finally got bored and moved on. plus, i really wanted a big screen. so i got a gn2 about a month ago, and rooted it on my mac two weeks ago using the CWM/mac/heimdall method. i have been running the stock-but-rooted rom, and not put on a custom rom yet. i have no real good reason for this, but for pure educational purposes and a desire for complete control, and/or warranty reason should they arise, i would like to do a full unroot and restore a stock rom. BUT everywhere I look, I can easily find every possible stock rom from every carrier and every country... except at&t (sgh-i317). i know i can use other that are similar. but my question is, WHY is what is potentially the most common/popular rom of them all, NOT widely available?
second question is: ok, so it's hard to find. but does it exist at all? if so, where? i tried to flash this one, (not allowed to post the link), using the CWM console that got put on the phone when I rooted it, but is fails every time I try saying the file or rom is "bad". is it bad, or do I need to do something else? FWIW, the fail flashings of this rom do no brick my phone. it reboots normally to the stock rooted rom i've been using since I rooted it two weeks.
oops, looks like i can't post links but the sgh-i317 rom i found was at a well-known net repository of stock roms

I found this over in the dev section in the Reference sticky.
http://www.hotfile.com/dl/181184536/fa1bbef/I317UCALJ2_I317ATTALJ2_ATT.zip.html
I haven't downloaded it, so I couldn't tell you what's in there. It might be a CWM flashable rom-only zip, or it might be odin-flashable files in there. You'll have to download and see.
Edit: Did a little more research.. That's an Odin tar file inside the zip.

I had to do a double take and make sure I wasnt writing this post. I am in almost the same boat under similar circumstances. I have been waiting for the stock rom for 2 months . I got my AT&T Note 2 in November and went through the root process and had a problem somewhere along the way and had to use a custom rom to get up and running again. Since then I have waited patiently for a stock rom to show up that would get me back to normal . My phone has been working , but my signal strength is bad and I can show 3 bars on my phone , but when I go to make a call , it drops to zero and I cannot make a call . This happens at work all the time and at home most of the times. My incoming calls are not accepted and are routed to my voice mail , which I cant listen to until I get to an area where I get a better signal . I cannot live like this for 2 years , I need this fixed . Just want to get back to stock , with no root , no custom roms , etc . I never had this problem with my iphone ! Love the Note 2 , but come on man!

Why not flash cleanrom att special edition and the correct modem. I have not had any issues with his rom. Did you do a backup of the stock rom before you flashed a custom rom? If you did go back to your stock backup.
www.stockroms.net
so i see we're all pretty junior here. none of the experienced folks have chimed in here yet.
getting back on topic, you could make a case that the att stock rom could/should be the most widely used rom in the entire gn2 world. yet it does not appear to be widely available, when the most obscure ones are. why is this?

thank you for posting that link, "member", because i couldn't. that's where i got the one that gives a "bad" or "corrupt" when i try to flash it in the CWM console.
sooo, is it corrupt? or is it user error on my part where i have to do something to the .zip file to make the CWM flash console able to use it? or do i have to flash it with mobile odin, (which i don't know how to use, yet).
-peter
ok member, i just unzipped the sgh-i317 file from stockroms and there is a .tar file in there, but "kies" is in the name of it. does that mean i have to use kies to flash it?

Hey so the only way to get back stock ATT (well the only way I know) is through ODIN. So follow these steps if you want your old AT&T unroot back, then root it again for a stock root experience.

And that .tar file is read only by odin I believe. I do not think you can flash it through CWM or TWRP, but I am fairly new to android (last 2 weeks, and before that 6 years of iOS). So I could be wrong.

He wants completely stock, as shipped. That's how I understand it anyway.
For pcrussell50, you'll use Heimdall to flash that .tar file. I use Windows so I've never used Heimdall, so I definitely cannot help you with it. Good luck!

success... i think. used mobile odinPRO to flash the rom on stockroms net then rebooted in to download mode and sure enough, there is no longer a binary count, where it used to read "1" and it shows the binaries as stock. a further check under settings>about device>status, all the way at the bottom shows device status: normal. it used to say device status: modified until this flash of the stock rom from stockroms.
now the mystery... am i still rooted? SU, Ti backup, triangle away (which i never used), and mobile odinPRO icons are still on the home screen. i do not know if these things go away automatically after unrooting or if they still hang around. but when i try to boot into the CWM recovery mode, (volume up-center home-power it boots to a similar, but stock looking interface. that makes me think it's unrooted now.
overall pretty satisfied. i'll roll like this for a few days and try to pick up the new ota update and re-root again.
thx, peter
even more success...
i picked up the ota update to 4.1.2 just as if it was totally stock--so i think now i AM totally stock, after waking up this morning rooted, and spending parts of today unrooting back to factory stock. so now i know i can do it. i'll re-root here again when i can get some time. thanks all, and i'll try to help anyone else in my boat as best i can.
-att gn2 sgh-i317, now running 4.1.2
-rooted to stock rom, then unrooted
-using a mac for rooting/syncing

-peter

i must not have had it ticked, because after reading your post above, i went to odin (still on my phone) and tried to open it and it told me i need to have root (super user) to use it. it said no such thing when i was rooted, so at this point i _think_ i'm not rooted. i'll look for the app in the app store for even more confirmation.
normally i'm not such a blabbermouth with posting, but i need to get up to 10 so i can post links. then you might not hear from me as much unless i actually have something of value to contribute.

So glad I left iOS. Even with a jailbreak it's nothing compared to android. I been rooted since day 1 and now I'm running the type 3 international stock rom by micosa. It's beautiful! Love the inverted apps for battery saving! I also have a swift flow beta keyboard and I lowered the height of the keyboard so there is more screen real estate with the keyboard up. And with s pen board switcher, I can go to handwriting mode as soon as I pull out s pen!
