Im writing this for my brother, he has an Epic that he just updated to E18. So after a few days we both found out that the OTA update was horrible and he just wants to go back to the way his phone use to be with the DK28. Im pretty familiar with flashing because im always flashing ROMs on my Milestone. Ive tried the Odin but the computer is just not reading my phone for nothing, yes I have installed the drivers and all that but still no luck. Im looking for an easy way to root and be able to just flash an update.zip. I would really like some help because everything im trying isnt working. Thanks in advance.
When you plugged it in, you had the phone in download mode before you hooked it up, correct? (Hold "1" + power)

I have tried it numerous times since lastnight where since the the computer has been turned off...that was just with odin. If I can root it and then just load flashable zips that would be fine too.

If you look up "Epic 4g cookbook" under the developers section, it will be a post by BThomas, it will have a link to a 1 click root and recovery in there. It will also have every current rom for the epic there, be sure to thank him if it helps.

Posting three suggestions I've seen posted by others in similar threads of this nature:
Try a different USB port
Reinstall Samsung drivers.
Try using a better quality micro USB cable, the stock one isn't reliable for some people.

Agree with the last suggestion. The stock cable is not of good quality. I thought I was having problems with my USB ports because I wasn't getting much response when flashing and attempting to transfer files.. But my daughters cable from a camera fit and when using it, everything worked great again.
If you are using win7 64 bit then get to a vista 32 bit machine and odin will see ur phone. This is what i had to resort too.

Now im just a little confused on how to load up a rom. Are they flashable zips like others or what? getting nervous now lol.
I guess my question is if his phone is working fine with EB13, why go back to DK28? EB13 is pretty much the exact same as EB13, except EB13 has a couple big fixes. If anything, you will be downgrading. I could understand going back to DI18, but going back to DK28 just doesn't make any sense to me??

Well basically back to whatever is was before the update. Idk which version it was exactly. EB13 has way too many bugs on his phone that's why he wanted to take it back to where it was before the update.

please help me, im in big doodoo... i dropped my old epic in the snow a couple of days ago and lost it. just got my brand new 100$ replacement one and decided to head straight for eb13. i ended up with cwm3.whathaveyou and then from there i ended up converting to ext4 it seems. i made the mistake of trying to reboot with the odexed stock eb13 rom. which started this downward spiral of an increasingly less functional paper weight. basically now i cant even get to cwm or stock recovery. i cant do anything except start download mode... which i assume is the only way to fix it now, however everytime i start to flash a stock update such as dg27, dk28 or eb13 they keep getting stuck. eb13 got stuck on the "boot.bin" and dg27 is currently stuck on param.lfs

Wrong section.
To answer your question though. You should go to the stock DI18 per the instructions on the wiki.
okay. how and where do i move it?
It should go in either Q&A or General. This is for ROM and Kernal development only. You can't move it unless you delete it and make a new thread. An admin will have to move it.
please dont make any new topics in this section. this goes in q & a. pls read rules
okay sorry. how do i delete my post?

Make sure you cant boot into any kind of recovery.
Call sprint technical they will try to reset it for you while you're talking to them on the phone act stupid but say you were trying to upgrade to froyo with samsungs exe.
they will reset it and it shouldn't be able to get pass the samsung boot then delete everything off of your sd card.
take it into your local sprint store they will fix it for free but remember tell them you were upgrading to froyo with SAMSUNG's Software not odin.

Glad everything worked out bro
So my USB port on my Epic is messed up. It charges just fine but it wont connect to the computer. So I want to unroot my phone so I can take it into Sprint.
I haven't been able to find a method for unrooting the phone with out using a USB cord though. I was wondering if it was possible or not.
Thanks,
Daniel
Just flash the stock rom in .zip form and you'll be good to go, Sprint reps aren't going to look for a custom recovery.
Well the thing I was worried about is if they noticed that I was on 2.1 still and tried to update it to the latest one. It would obviously fail.
Is this an original ROM that would work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786266
I will give you a link for stock EC05, what are you running now?
Well, actually I guess I am running just the stock 2.1 rom now that I think about it. I never got around to flashing a custom rom (was trying to a few weeks ago and realized the usb stopped working). But I do have several applications installed that require super user. So do you think I could just remove those and no one at sprint would really notice?
Thanks,
Daniel
You should be fine, I'm assuming you don't have a custom kernel, boot animation, or any modification on the stock Rom, right?
Nope never got around to any of that. Okay well I will see how it goes then. Thanks for your help.
edit: dumb question but how do I uninstall the root user application that manages the su permissions? It is only app left that shows it is rooted.

Hello all,
This is my first post to XDA and I'm having some serious issues. I have searched eveywhere to try and find an answer but with no luck. I was trying to install chris41 odin efo2plus rom/kernel, and odin froze at modem.bin. I didn't know what to do. I unplugged the usb cable, pulled the battery and tried again. However, this time it froze at factory.fs being installed. I am using the new ODIN (1.82). I have tried running as admin, running in xp sp2 compatibility mode with admin, I've changed USB ports, and even changed USB cables, although I've never had a problem with ODIN and the Palm Pre cable that I've been using. I'm stuck. My phone won't boot, and I can't get it to ODIN anything. Even tried to ODIN DI18 stock, and still freezes at factory.fs. I was on Bonsai with EXT4, and chris41's rom is RFS. Don't know if that has anything to do with it? I am completely confused. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Just keep trying bro... if it worked before it'll work again Odin is just fussy...

Try running it without the battery in the phone. Open Odin plug phone in without battery and then go into download mode. Put your files in appropriate place and run Odin with only auto reboot checked. I have three epics and one of them will actually not work at all in Odin unless I have the battery out. Worth a try.

Ok, well, lets start at where the files are supposed to go. Every rom I've ODIN'd before, I just put the tar in the phone section. Never put a pit or anything else with it. Is this correct? Second, usually when I ODIN a rom, it comes up with a little progress bar on the phone showing how far along the process is. I've tried now about 20 times after the first ODIN, and I haven't gotten a progress bar yet. Should I be worried about that?

After following qbking's video and putting the tar in pda instead of phone, and putting the pit in, it now fails even earlier in the process. The status bar comes up on my phone, but as soon as it goes to write cache.fs, it fails. ODIN either comes up and says FAIL in the red box, or ODIN completely crashes. And, same thing as before, I've tried diff USB, rebooted computer, in xp mode, with admin, without admin. I'm starting to think my phone is a brick.

HAHA it says dont use it in video in annotations i mean come on already as well as in noobs thread its for debugging purposes and will eat your battery alive.
Please read things this is why people have issues and wonder why and then complain its so simple to read by using your eyes
Not being angry but just trying to point out that, this is why noobs either brick or get terrible results.
I got it. I don't know why, but for some reason I had to have Re-Partition, Auto-Reboot, and F. Reset Time all checked, as opposed to only Auto-Reboot. I'm now on EC05. Thanks all for your input. I really do appreciate it.
it may be your usb cable. Are you using the factory samsung cable? if so that was the reason why most of my odin's were failing. Try a generic usb cable from monoprice or something and it may help you the same way it helped me!

Make sure you are using a fully charged battery. Also if you have multiple batteries try swapping between them. I have 2 counterfeit and one authentic battery, using the counterfeits causes problems in odin for me.
Also you may need to repartition if you are coming from a newer rom that is not BML

There is no one-click solution for Gingerbread. You would have to Odin EC05 for that. Here is how to root Gingerbread stock phones:

There is a more "pain in the ass" process of rooting your phone if your already on gingerbread. I will link you to some videos that should get you going.
You WILL need ODIN to get rooted. There are ways to root your phone without it, but ODIN makes things alot more simple. ODIN will become your best friend, trust me.
First, you will need to follow this step...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwFRzzIqouE
Once you have done that, you will need to move onto this step...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWOLEXqAeCc
Of course, use the latest version of ACS Recovery, which can be found on the link to that video.
Once you have completed those steps, you will be rooted, running ACS Recovery Version 5, or ClockworkMOD Recovery 5.0.2.7
Hope this was helpful.
If you run into trouble like it gets stuck at the Samsung screen for more than 5 minutes, you can return to Froyo stock and OTA back to stock Gingerbread and try again. Here is the thread for that:

I just flashed my first ROM (CleanGB) on to my Epic4G and reset the battery statistics. Along with using TB to freeze the DRM and SNS apps, I'm seeing great battery life. Thanks to everyone who contributes to this site!
Its not hard hahaha that's what I'd tell you anyways its really simple if you can get Odin to com its all downhill from there. Just thought I'd give you some encouragement since you've already been given directions. Never be afraid to root the epic is nearly impossible to brick.

My stock cable works fine. Grab Odin as it is an all purpose life saver. Are you planning on rooting and using custom roms or just using root apps?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
The stock cable worked fine for me when I rooted my Epic, too. I used the Rooting EI22 Gingerbread Instructions from Android Central, and fortunately it went very smoothly. It was my first time rooting my phone, so I was glad I didn't have any major problems. As noted above, you'll probably want to substitute one of the newer custom recoveries in place of the one in those instructions though. I thought I'd offer these text instructions (with screen shots) as an alternative to the videos posted above.
Regarding use of ROMs or just root apps, I actually rooted mainly to get the GPS and silent camera fixes. I'm probably going to want to use a custom ROM though, but am still currently on stock rooted EI22 (with those two fixes applied). I'm slightly concerned about getting all my apps and data back if I install a new ROM. I've got backup apps (Titanium Backup, non-pay right now, and MyBackup Root), as well as a nandroid backup from what I've read advanced restore of just data is possible, but don't really know what's the easiest/smoothest way to get things back. I might want to go with the MostlyStock ROM, since it probably changes the least amount of stuff, or something with a non-wiping version (I've seen at least one, but forget which it was offhand). Tips on how to make moving between ROMs while keeping apps and data easy to restore would be appreciated. Thanks!

The hardest part, for me anyway, is picking a ROM to stick with. Right now I'm addicted to trying out as many things as I can. Right now I'm running ThunderHawk but I'm sure that will change soon. I will tell you I haven't have a lot of luck with ROM management tools. ACS updater doesn't seem to have anything new, installs from ROM toolbox don't seem to work, ROM manager has worked the best for me so far.
Get a BB cable trust us when we say your stock one will go south on you at the most critical time! I use my stock for charging only. I have read many of stories on here where the issue was the cable. If you don't have a BB cable laying around check amazon out $1.97 plus shipping. I picked up 4 a few months back I keep 2 at home one in work and one in my laptop bag.

So far Ive had nothing but issues with this phone... rooting went fine, but after flashing carbon rom i stopped connecting to 4g. Tried a port of aosp as well, same happened. So i used the flashable zip located here to return to stock, and got an error after the reboot saying "could not mount /preload", but it seemed to finish successfully. Once booted, still no 4g. So i decided to use an odin one click from here but it failed at sboot.bin. now it wont boot... Ive been working with android for a while, never had this many issues (except trying to get jb on the infuse... that was fun . So i guess my goal now is just to get it fully functional again (including 4g), and if possible a TW based rom with working 4g...
On a side note, all of my flashes were clean, and i was using the stock kernel most of the time (tried to use plasma but kept getting phone FCs...) and Im 99% sure all the files i used were for this phone varient (L900, right)
Any help guys?
EDIT: I also realize after hours of reading that 4g WAS an issue with recent builds due to the new RIL blobs, but that doesnt explain why stock wont connect...???

Are the links not clickable? The link for both files should be in my first post. As far as a bad DL, it passed the md5, so im not sure why it failed... does anyone have a working tar of the LJC stock? This isnt even my phone, my friend needs it back before work tomorrow. Thats what happens when you get cocky. You think youve got things down pat then things end up broken :/ just shows how careful you need to be i guess...
EDIT!!
