Wifi calling sim card - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

i bought my SG2 around the time it was released and gave my sim card away because i figured id just keep using the one i had..well, as you all know you need the new sim cards to be able to use wi-fi calling
i called and went to 2 different tmobile stores and they are trying to charge me $20 for it..
i have a new tmobile sim card that my friend gave me from his mytouch4g..the # on the sim is TM9703
can anyone tell me if that one will work? im currently running jug v3.69 which is android 2.3.5 so i dont have the wi-fi calling feature yet..but will upgrade my rom if it works
and if you use wi-fi calling on your SG2 but have a different sim card model please post that one so i can try to look for that one as well
thanks in advance

I have the same problem, yet I dont think wifi calling is that useful when it still uses your munutes unless you have unlimited, again, it sounds like pretty cool feature yet its useless, do you really use it or relay on it? Just a personal thought and point of view, theres a couple apps such as viber that use the feature of wifi calling but free, the only thing is that the other user needs viber app, and wifi

no..its not something i rely on at all...its more something i want in case i ever need it...i know that it uses minutes...i live in ny and went to school upstate...sometimes i go back up there and visit friends..reception may be an issue depending on where i am...some of my friends live in the boondocks lol...also its very useful if you have ever experienced being in a basement that gets no reception

I was in a similar situation as you; I called up t-mobile to check and they said it was not. They said my SIM card was not up to date to use Wifi calling feature but they said a t-mobile store would give me a new SIM card for free if the t-mobile rep put it in their system that I had an old SIM card. Basically when you call t-mobile just ask them if you had the new SIM card and if not could the t-mobile rep give you a new one if you did an exchange at the store.

I'm not sure if that's a gba Sim or not but you can get one overnighted for free to you if you call Tmobile, I've heard through other people as well that the stores are starting to charge people for Sim cards even if the notes state issue for free.
As for it still using your minutes , that's just a matter of adding the free wifi calling feature to your account. That's free.

Call in. When prompted why you are calling say, "Cancel my account".
Tell the operator who picks up your story.
They will mail you a free sim card.

False we do not overnight sim cards, sim cards go usps only so no overnight. Also they may or may not give you a sim card if they tell you no its because they don't have to. The only way they have to get you one is if you go show a store that yours is defective its worth a try to call but don't waste your time trying multiple times you may just have to pay for one, or you could try taking that new one you have to a store n telling them customer care sent you the wrong one then maybe they will trade it.

swapping at the store is a genius idea..that never occurred to me...however, before i do that im just trying to see if the TM9703 one will work or not..no sense of trading in a working sim for another sim
thanks for all the responses...still hoping to hear from someone with the 9703 or a different working sim

Wish I remembered lol I know that we can tell from the picture on them because they changed the picture starting with those ill get my new sim card out I haven't used it yet n will let u know in a couple min I have like 5 of them laying around

False. I've overnighted all the Sim cards I've replaced for a few weeks now. that'd be the easiest for this guy.
You're welcome.

The one that came with the gs2 is a tm9177 has a pic of a guy and girl either taking a pic of themselves or watching some hilarious video on a phone lol so I don't think the one you have is right because this is the same one that came with my amaze as well. If you go to the store if they don't see an order in your account and tell you that just tell them you ordered it through sales that the Rep told you the ones for prepaid will work and thats what you received. They probably wont but just incase they are that thorough they can't look up orders done through sales only customer care.

Customer care has either standard mail through there shipping method which is free and the 19.99 one which is priority mail which can take 1-3 business days depending on where you are so you are wrong. The only departments that have overnight directly is sales so you are mistaken if you think customer care has overnight or that he would even get it without paying for it, especially due to the fact that there is quite a bit of outsourcers who prefer to have people get mad then go outside of standard policy.

Then I suggest he get transferred to tech care. We have option to overnight for free.

Got mine overnighted from customer care with no problems. They said mine was an old one, and they'd send me a new one, no charge. I did speak with an 'american accent' CSR.
Got it the next day via UPS.

Cool story bro
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

Shows how awesome Tmobile is, can't even get facts straight on a simple Sim card replacement.
Gotta love it.
Hope the OP got an idea on what to do though.

Kind of off topic but wifi calling does not use minutes when you add "free wifi calling" to your account. Essentially you can talk all you want over wifi calling but you have to make sure either you or a csr adds the free wifi calling to your account otherwise they do charge.
Edit: not charge but it uses minutes if you don't have the addon

i think im gonna call them and explain to that i gave my sim away not knowing that it was gonna be needed and see if i can get a free one
if that doesnt work ill just go to the store make up some story about how they shipped me the wrong one (the mytouch4g one that i have) and demand that they swap it for me if they dont want to
thanks for all the suggestions

Yeah they tried charging me twenty bucks and i went off about how their quality of customer service sucks lately and that I never knew it required a "special" sim card for wifi calling. Got one via priority mail for free .

Purpose of Sim Card

Well like the name implies, I'm a noob. INC2 is my first smartphone, and it's been a learning process, but I'm comfortable with it. Either way, my service is currently cut off(by choice) there is a billing issue, and unless I stop being stubborn or they give my the credit I deserve I'm not paying.
Anyway it's been cut off a month, and I've still been using it over wifi just fine with 2.99 skype calling and text plus it's been no problem. Anyway, I took out the sim card and it's still working fine. Is that normal, even when I tried to make a call it sent me to Verizon cust. service like it normally does, and it still says in service in the settings.I was under the impression, that once the sim card is taken out nothing could be done with the phone. Can Verizon track what I'm doing without the sim card in? Or even when it is in and the GPS is turned off, can they track it?

To expand on that, your SIM isn't required to use the phone in the US on big red's network. CDMA carriers don't use SIM cards; GSM carriers do. The Inc2 is a dual mode/hybrid/whatever you want to call it because it has a CDMA radio for domestic use and a GSM radio for use abroad.
Sent from my DInc2 using XDA App
I hear that Gingerbread has been patched to support RUIM cards (CDMA SIMs) so with the patch you can run a RUIM. Then depending on whether you are on CDMA or GSM select, switch off, put in the corresponding card into the slot and start.
yea pulled mine out a long time ago...but keeping it just incase...
Is it possible for my friend then essentially to take my phone and throw his AT&T Sim in my phone and he is able to use it on there service? Or is there a SIM Unlock for instance when I'm in Thailand and don't want Verizon to charge me $1,000,000.00 just to make phone calls because normally i end up buying a cheap Nokia and SIM for only 50.00 and it lasts me for about 2 days on minutes when im overseas. I pretty much want to be able to use the SIM and not have Verizon charging me for International use when i'm using a different Carrier's SIM

The SIM is for foreign use for most of us in the US. I went to the UK recently, bought a $15 SIM card which gave me a new phone number over there, phone minutes, unlimited text and unlimited data. I got the unlock code from Verizon before I left. I was able to get the unlimited data by having a rooted phone and selecting my own APN settings.
I'll do the same later this year in Italy. Right now I am using a Virtuous Unity ROM which does not recognize SIM cards, but I'll just switch back to my stock Gingerbread ROM before I go.

The network provider has to give you that info. I got it from the company that rented me the European SIM card. I used iPhoneTrip.com, for what it's worth. Good coverage and no sneaky charges after the trip was over.

just 1 question regarding wifi calling is the update really happening first couple of weeks of november and is there a way to tell if my old sim card is able to use it which is about 8 months old or should i just install the new 1? Reason I ask is because I've read some people had the new sim card taken by a rep when they bought the phone saying the old 1 they had looked the same. Thx in advance

ordered mine online so i still have my new sim just havent installed it yet but want to make sure if i will get the update with the old 1 in or not and it would also be helpful to everyone else that got the new sim taken away if we could know the difference between the new 1 and the last 1 before it so we could either go grab 1 or install it if we have it.

I would like to say that the old sim will work, but since I haven't even seen what the new sim looks like to compare the two I have no idea. I wonder if T-Mobile told the reps to take the sim card or the reps are just stealing them for their own personal reason.

go back to the store and get the new sim cards..some reps arent as informed as the others so they mistakenly must have taken the new sim cards. New sims are need for the wifi calling to work.

was just comparing mine and my old 1 has a smaller almost square shape gold connector while the new 1 has a longer rectangular shape gold connector but not as big as the real older 1s that took up almost the whole card... guessing im gonna have to change mine up just in case because it is different. Just dont like taking the back off too much because it does feel like something might crack or break after so many times...lol
i had to return exchange my sgs2 because the touchscreen was acting up, would not charge anymore and would not mount usb storage. rep said because i used OLD SIM CARD. dont know how true it is, but all is well now.
If I did not buy the phone through Tmobile, but bought it outright elseware and it has given me problems (the battery life) will I be able to return/exchange in a Tmobile store for another one?
I still have all the accessories/box etc.
Depends on the location. Corporate stores can return purchases made at premium retailers and thats about it.

Those of you asking whether or not WiFi calling will work with your SIM card: You must have a card that has TM9177 printed on the back. (According a good friend who happens to be my T-Mobile rep)

The short answer is no. You would need return it where you got it from. If it was from say....another person that got it through T-mobile, either locally or customer care you would need an order# or reciept for them to process an exchange. Samsung covers the device for one full year from the date of purchase (Samsung seems pretty strict and may ask for the original purchase reciept also). The best thing honestly, is to buy it from somewhere that will honor the warranty. Saving a few bucks now may cost you down the line.
Worst case senario, call tmo and tell them the deal. Tech support may be willing to work with you to get warranty replacement if you were the 1st # associated with the IMEI. Remember all of this is YMMV, I can almost always get tmo to help me out, but in a recent & super similar case I was denied. I ended up selling the one I had to buy a new one after some careful wording to a customer loyalty soop. Again YMMV, but some ideas and facts to consider
Hope that helps.

Thanks for offering to contribute from your experience as a rep. It's much appreciated since, as you are even more aware than us, not all reps have the same knowledge base or interest in these devices.
One thing that would be awesome would be if you could let us know of any known issues that T-mo tells its reps to be aware of (i.e. if you receive any information about issues that customers may come in with).
We're pretty much all still in our 14 day period and sometimes it's nice to be aware of possible defects such that we can look for them as early as possible to see if we are affected.
Have you heard or experienced anyone coming in with complaints regarding the display having the "brushed metal" or "vertical line" issue? (There's a long thread on it in this forum)

New sim card?

Hey guys so I need a new sum card for the wick calling and when I go into a t mobile store they said they need the sum card that came with the box but I never got any, then they say it costs 20 dollars for the sum card alone. Is this just a scam cause I read on one of the threads that they're suppose to give it to you for free. What do I do?
call in (customer service 800) first and get them to notate your account that you need the sim, when they pull up your account (corporate locations only) they will see the note and usually not charge you
I have a sim card you can have message me if u want it it came with my phone but i dont use tmobile

Ya thats bull**** i have never had to pay for one in my life and had tmobile for over 10 years. They practically throw them at me whenever i go into the store for anything.
I know they are making the cost up but do I just tell them look up my account when I get the note thing saying I need a new sum card? I want to outsmart the snotty t mobile workers who don't know anything about phones

Hi. My sim card was bad too. I just walked into a T-Mobile, and they gave me a new one on the spot. There should be no charge. They actually have a little sim card reader that should be able to tell if yours is bad. I'm new to the whole sim cards thing, but maybe they're charging you because you're upgrading from an older sim?
The first thing he checked was if I had an older card, which didn't support the wifi calling.

I'm confused, what was wrong with your original sim card?

ESN/LTE/SIM/confusingness

Question for you guys:
Since the Galaxy Nexus (and other LTE devices) use SIM cards with Verizon, is it no longer the case that they can have bad esn/meid/imei numbers?
I know activation happens automatically when you pop the sim in, I have a Thunderbolt now that I purchased used and just used my Jetpack SIM to activate it. I switch it back and forth all the time, after you swap the SIM your device changes in the MyVerizon site, along with available plans and options. I used my Thunderbolt for a long time just on a hotspot plan that way, very convenient.
I'm curious because I see "bad esn" Galaxy Nexus phones on eBay, so I just don't get why they would be bad if all the activation info is related to the SIM card and not the device itself.
Hopefully someone can educate me on this.
I know this has been asked before, but there are no good answers from my searches. Most threads end up simply saying "ask Verizon".
I know what Verizon thinks: "buy from us so we get your money"
The phones still use CDMA so they can still have bad ESNs.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Yeah, but isn't all the activation info tied to the SIM card, not the device? When Verizon activates a SIM, they don't need a device to activate it.
Does the activation process read the esn from the device and send it when trying to activate with a SIM card? (this must be how MyVerizon knows what device you're using? Maybe?) If this is the case, there must be some software somewhere doing the work?
What's the point of a SIM if it's getting a unique device id from the device? Is this just because LTE and CDMA are still kind of separate?
going off my personal experience you should be fine if you buy one. Heres my readons. I purchased a used gnex off this chick but didn't realize it used a micro sim instead of regular. I thought eh I'll be fine I doubt this chick is trying to rip me off. I go to the store and tell them I need a micro sim to activate my phone. They do their thing then ask where I got the phone from. I said this damn thing is reported stolen isn't it? Yup. Fml! $400 gone. Well I end up meeting up with another guy and buy a brand new one from him. We call Verizon to get it all set up before I pay the dude but he says DO NOT give them the last digit of the imei off the phone. I'm thinking ohhh k. And I give it to them anyways. (I was always told I was a good listener in school) they say this phone is stolen or hasn't been activated on an account so if that's the case they need to activate it. So I call back this time and leave the last digit of the imei out. And like magic it was activated and Mr Verizon rep was happy to help. So then I ask this guy if he thinks it'll work on my other gnex, he says give it a try or pop the sim in first and see if it works. And to my surprise just putting the sim in actually worked! Now instead of me being pissed and having 1 bad nexus my gf and I are enjoying our ice cream sandwiches. Hope this helps you.

going off my personal experience you should be fine if you buy one.

So by giving the Verizon Representative my IMEI # minus the last number....which seems to be what the MEID number is basically when looking in the settings of the phone; but anyways by doing that will allow it to activate? So in that process do I tell the person buying my phone to purchase a MicroSIM from VZW then activate over the phone?
Yes. Or they can do it in store but don't give it to the rep since they "know everything" and will want to put it in.

Heh, thanks for the input. I know I'm late responding...
I did buy a Nexus, all I did was take my regular sized SIM and cut it down with one of those cutters. Everything activated normally.
I had a feeling it would, just wanted to throw it out there and see if I was absolutely wrong or something. I had previously swapped my SIM between my phone and mifi without issues, so I figured I wouldn't have any issues even if there was a problem.
Thanks.

SIM Card Help!

I'm on the verge of buying an S3 but off a friend. I talked to a T-mo rep and she was telling me about buying a Micro-SIM because cutting down the old ones won't work with WiFi calling and I would get signal issues. I'm pretty sure the signal issues don't have anything to do with the SIM card and WiFi calling doesn't appeal to me since I always have full signal in my house. I just want to know if I need to buy a new SIM card or not. Thanks everyone!
Should be able to get a micro SIM card for free at T-Mobile store

Good question if you ask me, does anyone know if it can be done?
Just got to a Tmobile store and ask for a micro sim. THey have them for free, or pm me and I'll send you one.
Then once you have the phone you can either call or go to the store and have them switch your line over to the new sim. If you call, just don't use the phone you are switching the sim from as it will drop the call once they enter the new sim card for your line.
Sim cards are usually free at T-Mobile I heard cutting down old sim cards will give you problems but not exactly sure what.
Just go to the store and ask for a new sim card and they can transfer everything over for you.

When you go to the tmo store, make sure the card they give you is one that is capable of wifi calling. None of them in my area have the ones that are, you might have to get it from customer service.
I ran into this issue as well. I just figured the SIM from my Galaxy nexus would work with the S3 I purchased through Wirefly.com but it was too big (obviously). As others mentioned, I just went up to the local T-Mobile store and asked for a micro sim card to use with my new phone. They activated one and gave it to me all within 2 minutes of entering the store, free of charge.
I would laugh if T-Mobile tried to charge me for a new SIM card to use with their service. They should provide SIM cards for free, much the same as your bank giving you a replacement debit card at no extra charge since you are using their services.
There lying they just want u to get the "new" Sims that have throttling and tethering detection ... have my sim card from 2005 cut and using it on tmobile. 4g hspa+ no issues wifi calls work..

I have not been able to find a free one in my area, the local stores charge 20 for it. and won't budge. Is there maybe a prepaid one I can get more cheaply?

Before I got my s3, i went to my local t mobile store and told them i need a micro sim card for my new s3. They gave me one without a problem for free. I think in order to get one for free, you must be on a two year contract with t mobile and your account has to be in good standing.
if not try this http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cell-phone-detail.aspx?cell-phone=T-Mobile-Micro-SIM-Card it should work.
if that does not work, try ebay. if that does not work then just pay your t mobile store.
