Research
I'm new to the customization game, but I learned most of what I know from hardcore research and google can track most of your questions in seconds.
try the go stuff in the market they have all kinds of cool things lockers ,keyboards , launchers , just search go invthe market this stuff doesnt need root

for most of the "hardcore" type mods , yes you have to be rooted, custom ROMs are a good place to start, if you find one you mostly like , you will not have to customize it as much ...
If you just Root and start modifying stock, you could be at it for a long time before you get it the way you want it , plus, some of the mods don't always play well with each other ...
I rooted and just found a custom rom I liked.

so i just found out about "rooting" my phone. i was a really into customizing my jailbroker iphone.
Im having trouble finding a good tutorial on youtube or a root for dummies post.
Basically i used unrevoked and got the special permission thing. Now im lost. i want it mainly for customization. i dont quite get the whole rom thing. i installed rom manager clockwork. I got a theme from here called fresh and it worked after i fallowed the directions on a video. I had to go back to my backup i made because i was not happy with the theme and how it limited my youtube options.
what im asking is, is this really as hard as it seems? i feel like im breaking my phone or this is really risky.
i really wish i could get a better grasp here.
so is rom manager only for themes off this site?
can i install themes without my computer?
very confused.
please be gentle im a complete noob
thanks
Start off by changing your launcher, I recommend launcher pro. Itll let you customize the dock and screens and just go from there.
thanks for reply, this is how little i know...what is a launcher lol.
i need a guide
Also, seems that all the things i want are not free... the launcher pro is not. is there a way around that or i have to just bite the bullet?
not sure if i trust giving my credit card info to something i know nothing about.
Launcher pro is free. Launcher pro plus cost I think 1.99 but in my opinion it is well worth it. Also if you want to tether your computer you can't download wifi tether its free in the market.

Hello,
I am a noob to android coming from wm6.5 and blackberry. I have been browsing the homescreen thread and would like to learn how to get my phone to look as great as the ones i have seen. is there a tutorial available or is it more so trial and error? when i see some of the screen details in the thread, it's like a foreign language to me.
TIA
Steve
Welcome to Android. Its much easier than you think. Some will be trial and error to get something just how you like it. Some is as easy as changing the launcher you use and applying themes. There are also tons of apps like desktop Visualizer, folder organizer, circle launcher, and many more that you can use to customize the look and feel of your device. You can also install different clocks or lockscreens and if you have rooted your phone and flashed a de-odexed rom you can use some of the themes you see posted here. My best advice is for you to look through "post your homescreen" type threads. Most people will list what apps they use and may share icons or wallpapers too. Use Google and Android Market to learn what some of those apps do. Many are free or very inexpensive. You could also look at the sticky posts in this thread, forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=527 for some more about theming. There is really no right or wrong, just do what you like and make your phone your own. Good luck.

Do you have root? Do you have a rom also? Which rom are you running? If you do not have root I recommend using zedomax's v3 root kernal to root.
No, i'm running completely stock for now. I was able to customize my homescreen using go launcher, simple text and WP clock that wil hold me over for a little while. I tried posting an image, but my noon status won't let me.

Hey guys been reading for a bit...Actually about 2 days now lol
Anyone else have a hard transistion over?
A few things im excited about is the wifi calling and possibly tehtering.
Right now Im tring to accomplish getting a different theme and removing the bloatware and might just wait for ICS to come out before I start playing with roms I feel like I got the phone a bad time because soon we will be transitioning over.
So right now,
Get a theme where I can access and change my music with out opening the to the home screen...
Wifi calling
And possibly tether but I think I need to install a custom rom and freeze the tether option.
Other than that just figure things out.
Firstly, you cant remove bloatware, truely, without rooting your phone. However, you can hide certain apps with a themer/launcher.
Root free, the most iphone-like launcher is Espier launcher 5.x . Espier also has a safari like browser called Espier Browser. Both of these apps can be found in the market place and will fool you into thinking you have an iphone.
The best iphone like lock screen is the miui lockscreen on the market.
Yea I don't know if I want to go iphone style theme I was looking at some other threads even tried a few widgetlocker I couldnt figure this one out find some nice ones on this site just couldn't get them to look like that one mine.
The other was lockbot its was a bit cheesy.
I will have to look into launcher(s)

The girlfriend and I both really like golauncher and golocker, but you'll have to play with them and figure out which works best for you.
Give it a bit of time and you'll really like the phone I think. It takes a bit to get used to finding things. The OS has a ton more depth to it so it can be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get the lay off the land you'll be able to enjoy it a lot more.
Both my girlfriend and I had iPhones before Android and couldn't go back. Unless you're really itching for some new feature you can only use by rooting the phone I'd just take some time to familiarize yourself with the phone and it's menus. New roms add a lot of flexibility and new features, but the new options/moved menus may just add to the frustration for now.

I would personally suggest WidgetLocker, as you can put a music player widget(I'd suggest pure music widget 4x2), and DX Home as the homescreen. It's just iphone-like enough to look really nice, but it has android where it counts.

Don't forget the kernel update for the Valkyrie rocket.
Any who back on topic. If your completely new, you're gonna want to wait a bit to root and ROM, as it can get overwhelming. Get a good feel of how it works. Look at a lot of reviews for your phone on YouTube, then search around the forums for some good tips. Especially stickies.. and yea
That's about it.

if you don't really want a launcher that bad you can play around with the Samsung Launcher thing, and add music instead of contacts etc... Home Button > Settings > edit > switch >take out whatever you want and add whatever you want, sure it goes out of order but you can always put it back in order by Home > Settings > View Type > Alpha, etc..

Best launchers are Go Launcher EX, ADW Launcher, or Launcher Pro in my opinion. If you want an iphone-like experience, MIUI is a good way to go but i dont think its quite ready for prime time for our phone though theres a MIUI Launcher standalone available, which has many of the same features from a UI standpoint.
As for lock screen controls, apps like Poweramp have lock screen controls for music. There are also lock replacements like Go Locker and Widget Locker that have customizable lock screens.

Like jumping to any platform you get your pros and your cons, You have a more flexible OS but Battery might not be as good the list goes on. and not every OS is made for everyone just give it a shot you have 30 days to change your mind.
Thanks for the info guys! Yea been playing with it a bit more I think the screen is a million times better than my 3gs I might try go locker or the launcher today
Get qq launcher. I use it now and love it. it's free in the market and had s bunch of different internal themes.you can use.
I'm using the iPhone theme for obvious reasons
There's a thread called home screenshots in the theme and apps section where you can take a look at how some ppl have their home screens set up with different launchers, themes, widgets, and icons that way you can get some ideas of how you might wanna set things up as for roms it's really up to you and which you like better there's no harm in trying each one til you find your daily driver remember you can always mix different roms and kernels and find what combo works best for you (just remember to stick to roms and kernels that are for our specific model you don't wanna end up with your first android paper weight) .. Btw I was the same had been using iPhones since the first one to the iphone4 and this was my first Android and haven't looked back since love this phone it's a beast!

If you want to change the lockscreen around, try milocker. Its free and there are alot of options, plus you can change your lockscreen wallpaper.
I have ROM toolbox lite on my galaxy, I've noticed most of the features you need the paid version to be able to access them. My question is are those features really worth the $4 price tag? I'm starting to think it's worth it but since I've never used those features I don't know for sure, so I just wanted you're guys opinion whether I should buy it or stick with the lite.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah, definitely worth it. A great app and, assuming you would buy only 4 of the pay features it has from other devs for 99 cents each you are already ahead.

One last question, I bought it and I'm trying to change my icons, for example I tried to change my battery icon. I I picked the one I want and hit install it did nothing I pick the one I want again and hit download it did nothing. What the heck am I doing wrong? The only icon I'm able to change is the signal.

Are, that is tough one, sorry. No simple answers.
What ROM are you using? Gingerbread, ICS, JB?
After Gingerbread everything changed and most apps cannot handle the newer resource files. GB is easy - most icon changes are fine.
If you just want to change the battery icon and running ICS look up UOT KITCHEN. It works well for GB, it can do battery icon for most ICS ROMs, don't know about JB.
Whatever you try make sure you have a good nandroid backup! Some of the processes can damage resource files.

I just made my very first nandroid backup last night. Right now I am on the stock rom, and come to find out it's not just the battery icon that I can't change or download it's all icons. I can download other icons and after I install them I reboot my phone but still have the stock icons its just the battery icon that wont even download, even though I can download and install the other ones after rebooting the phone I'm still on stock icons. I guess I just don't know enough about the Android operating system I probably shouldn't be playing around with these things until I learn more. I'm actually thinking about getting a refund around tool box not working on my stock rom and I'm very happy with the stock rom and have no intention on flashing a new one. Sorry for my spelling and grammar and punctuation but I'm driving right now in using voice to text lol.

Pro version is definitly worth it. It is in my opinion the best all around tool to have for android. It has many very useful features and can replace a handful of different apps and puts them all in one. For example sd boost. Cpu control. Not to mention the font and boot animation installers. Very good tool to have.

So for Christmas I got a nexus 7 32GB tab, now ive been browsing the site for a couple weeks now reading about rooting, roms and kernals.
I saw the thread in general about one click rooting ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2381698 )
and have decided that is most likely the way ill go, how its shown in the first video.
Now for roms ive been thinking that paranoid android may be the best for me, as from what ive read and understood it doesn't have all those google apps the nexus comes with unless you install the google package? can anyone comfirm this? just want to make sure I didn't read it like a tard.
Now lets say that rom is a good one and I should be good to go, what kernals or kernals should I get?
if the kernel I download I don't like is it easy to switch them out for another or do I have to reset and reroot the tablet and reinstall the roms and kernel? same goes for the rom as well, are they easy to swtich for another? can you have more then one rom on a tablet?
and last of all so say I install paranoid, and decide on a kernel and it all goes well, and is looking good, how do I download apps? do I need the google apps to do this?
super new to this and any help would be much appreciated!

A lot of good questions. Before you start flashing roms and/or kernels you should read as much of each specific thread as you can stand. You need to have an idea of what kind of problems if any users are experiencing, that way you can hopefully make an informed decision. I personally would never read just the first couple posts and start flashing. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some good roms and kernels out there and there is nothing wrong with experimenting. And yes, some roms do require gapps. And you do need at least some of the google apps (gapps) to be able to use the Play Store. They will tell you if they are not included in that specific thread.
As far as kernels go you need to be careful. Read, read, read! If you start playing with overclocking and voltages you can easily create problems for yourself. Do you know what to do if you get stuck in a boot loop? Or start getting random reboots? Not trying to talk you out of doing anything, hell I use custom kernels myself. it's just that it's not that hard to end up with a really nice paperweight! Sometimes going from one kernel to another you will need to dirty flash your rom or flash the system image to get a clean start with a new kernel. Good luck!
Firstly, use
Since the Nexus 7 is pure stock already, if you have no reason for a custom ROM, you probably don't need it. Just use Closed Framework with Gravitybox module, you can get some customization. Also consider candy shop with zip themed, you can customize your navigation buttons and stuff.
As for kernels, use either elementalx or franco kernels. Those are probably the two most popular.

very much appreciate the quick replies.
Not really trying to mess with voltages or cpu stuff or overclocking. Really just wanted to make it a bit more customizable. which is what I thought the paranoid android ROM would be used for.
Wouldn't mind perhaps better battery life, which is what kernals are used for as well from my understanding?
Ive literally read every forum ( nexus 7, nexus 7 2013, android forum as well ), the top forum stickies and also gone through the pages in the sub forums and such for search of questions I may have.
But from what im gathering I think I just need to delete(is that possible or is it just disabling apps?) and maybe download some more aps for customization like clocks and weather widgets(not sure if that's exactly what a widget is), instead of all this rooting and unrooting stuff.
like when I click the circle with 6 dots in it to show me all the apps on my tablet, I honestly don't want half of them even on my tab
Bascially what I just want is a minimalistic screen where I don't have tuns of icons everywhere as I wont use 3/4th of it such as gmail, keep, people, play newsstand, hangouts, and apps that the stock tablet comes with.
edit: also any way without unrooting to install and snes emulator or play pc or ps1 games? digging some super Mario or diablo clone hack and slashj

You can disable most everything, I have a lot of the google apps disabled that I have no plans on using and all of the apps you mention can be disabled. There are things you can do when rooted to help battery life but there are also things you can do without being rooted. Like turning off wifi always scanning, or always on while sleeping. Adjusting sync. Disabling apps. If rooted you can use Greenify to hibernate apps without disabling them. The paid version of Greenify allows you to hibernate system apps but you have to have Xposed Framework installed to get the paid version to work and Xposed only works with dalvik and not art. Lots of options! Sorry, I haven't used any emulators. Do a search of the whole q/a thread, you'll find something I'm sure.
