Hello everyone!
Long time lurker, first time poster.
First off, I have been rooting and customizing Android devices for a while now, so I am not a noob per say.
But.. I am running into an issue I just cannot seem to figure out.
I have just purchased a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus. LOVE this phone!
At stock, I was able to play 720p and 1080p (under 10gig) mkvs just fine. Smooth and responsive.
Of course being a geek-o-holic I had to root and customize the crap out of it.
First I went with the latest stable Rom from Open Kang.
The ROM was great.... However, when I went to play a mkv file (Using BS Player, MK Player, Dice Player.. etc...) one the movie would load, the phone would lock up requiring me to pull the battery and reset.
I then decided to flash the Franco kernel on top of the ROM to see if this would correct the issue.. same issue as above.
I made sure to wipe cache and davlik cache each time.
I then moved on to other ROMS such as RevoHD. Same thing.. Rom by itself, Rom with custom Franco kernel.. Every player tried when launching a mkv would just lock up the phone.
I am at wits end with this. Never had this kind of issue before. I am hoping someone has seen this before and has an idea about what is going on.
Again, does not matter the ROM or the Kernel. Stock however works perfectly.
I want to root to get the better battery life and "other" benefits.
If anyone has any idea as to what might be the issue I would greatly appreciate it!

It was requested so I offered and made a video showing boot up, and general usage in the newly released CM9 RC1. It is running the stock CM9 kernel, not HONOs kernel. It is fresh, 3rd boot after flashing. It is rock stable so far with no issues since flash. If you are considering using it as a daily driver, I would say go for it!
If you have any questions about it, just ask and I will try my best to answer accordingly.
And NOW, the video

p.s. excuse the rotation, there is supposed to be a fixed one on my channel soon but Im not sure when it will pop up.
Edit: heres the rotated video.

What about battery?Better?

Battery
For me, its pretty decent. I dont constantly run 4g and usually have it disabled altogether because Im on wifi pretty much everywhere. I leave wifi on all the time and gps too. When i flashed it yesterday at approximately 2:30 pm local time, It was at 71%. I did not charge it and used it fairly minimally(around 20 mins of gaming, some wifi browsing, a handful of calls, playing with it while shooting the video, and a couple text messages) and i started charging it at 11am today with 35% left. Is it better than gingerbread? definitely. I havent tried HONOs new v4 kernel though. Of course YMMV.
oh, and btw for those wondering, I havent had any issues at all since flashing. No crashes, no force closes, and everything is smooth and buttery.
Also, if there is anyone who would like to see something specific on video, I could do another if necessary. I tried to get the basic out of the box experience into that one.
I've been using it since it came out on the 26th as well. Maybe it's a placebo effect... But it seems so much smoother and with no force closes.... But... That could also be because I did a full wipe when I installed... And I haven't done that since installing the first nightly... Bottom line... I loving it. No issues so far. Also thanks for the video.

And I agree with your sentiments exactly. No issues for me and extremely smooth. I see no reason yet why this shouldn't be daily driver ready.
oh well if you dont mind, can you do a video of web browsing, showing youtube, playing flash videos, and heavy gaming. lol i know its alot but i can either get this phone or the exhilarate, and i just wanna know if this phone is worth getting

I will see what I can do but it wont happen today since im already at work. Probably tomorrow sometime. Everything is really smooth though, im not sure what you expect to see...
Oh and an update on battery. I know that this is only a short term test but in the last 2.5 hours since i unplugged, i have made 1 phone call, had wifi on the whole time, and done a few texts. Im still at 100 percent. I used to be at 95 or less by now...
I've read through all of the individual ROM threads, as well as any question threads, and it seems like none of them are quite ready.
I run CM 7.2 with essentially no modifications, for reference. S-off, CWM 3.0.0.8.
Thanks in advance for your input.

What are you missing from them to be a daily driver? I've had zero issues on my CM9 build and you can find two options in the development thread that are extremely stable.
The only thing not working with ICS is the stock camcorder to my knowledge, but third party apps still work if you need it.

I can't get mlb at bat to play mlb.tv on both DInc and Nook Color running CM9. Not a location issues, it tries but says Error-Can not play video. All other video seems to work.
Can't see any other issues with CM9, runs ok but maybe a little slower than CM7.
Depends what your standards for a daily driver are. If you mean a phone you can use to make calls, use some apps, without a lot of hassle, then yeah, they're daily drivers. If you want perfection, no glitches or bugs ever, then no.
The camcorder is the biggest issue for me (I was running Evervolv, but they're all built on the same base). Yeah, the camcorder kind of works, but playback is broken, and it's not nearly as smooth as stock. Also, I find that after a while (a day or two), things just start to get laggy. Not awful, but it doesn't fly like it does on stock. The graphics (especially the home screens and the app drawer) are actually way smoother on ICS than on stock, but it takes longer to actually get your apps opened and running. I'm currently rockin' Ice Cream Senseless with Holo Launcher. ( I also spent some time using Touch of Blue, I liked it a lot, but the 2am reboots kept making me miss my alarm clock and be late for work...) My current setup gives me 95% of what I liked about ICS, and it's very snappy and extremely stable. No doubt I'll be back to craving Ice Cream Sandwich (or Jelly Bean - lol) in another week or so, but I always end up coming back to this one.
Smoothness is the biggest issue, IMO.

I used CM a9 build before going to the SIII and it worked the best for me. Was using Evervolv for a while, but that soon became very unstable.

I ran drk.hd's CM a9 for a while and it worked well except for the known video camera issue. The only reason I changed is because I got flash happy.
I went to mamarley's CM9 w/linearo and it is running very smooth (still no stock video camera). Although, I had to use the ics incredikernel w/HWA because mamarley's kernel was not communicating with my touch screen.

I been on this rom for a bit. No major complaints. No CC and voice search will crash using navigation. But very smooth overall. Daily driver worthy for sure.

I've been using the Linaro optimized CM9 ROM with the included Mamarley kernel.
The only issue I've run into is a problem with the bluetooth connecting to my car and not being able to play the call audio through the car speakers. I "think" they're working on a fix for it.
EDIT: SUPER sorry wrong forum

is your's a amoled or slcd? I ended up having to do the same thing and I am just curious.
I've been on MIUI v4 since May and it's been very solid with the exception that Netflix doesn't work for me. It plays about 2 seconds of sound (no video) and then just a black screen. Going forward or backward in the video doesn't do anything to help it pick back up. MIUI GB worked great with Netflix previous to the ICS build. I thought maybe it was HWA related, but I've tried a few different kernels and haven't had any luck. Youtube plays just fine.
I am going to flash cm9 in a moment to see if Netflix works there.
edit: Flashed cm9 -- still the same issue with Netflix. Plays sound for about 2 seconds, then stops. Anyone else with this problem?

I think it's a problem related to the camcorder not working. I'm no Android programmer, but I'd bet it's because of a codec issue. Shame that barely any ROMs support a working camcorder.
Have you tried Evervolv 2.2.0p3? I hear that ROM has a working camcorder, but haven't tested it myself.
drk.hd CM9a9 with Chad/Tiny Incredikernel HWA
Working great as a daily driver, camcorder/netflix/youtube (occasionally) dont work.
Im very happy with it otherwise.
I hate this. Because CM9 & AOKP are so freakin awesome. Great battery life
and incredible GUI options. Especially AOKP which I liked better than CM9.
But as good as they are, I'm just getting bettery performance with stock when it
comes to my only PERSONAL test. This doesn't mean stock is better overall. It
just means stock is better for the one test that I have which is pretty hard on a
phone.
I've tried CM9 as well as AOKP based on both ICS and Jelly Bean. Also tried
multiple kernels and performance settings. But no matter what I try, they all lag
REALLY BAD on this webpage that has tons of gifs on it:

I like to show the gifs to my bar buddies. And can't do that with CM9/AOKP, but
stock ROM does it flawlessly. No lag for me at all when scrolling up/down the
thread page I posted. All the video gif's play nice & smooth.
With CM9/AOKP, they all judder/halt-stop/lag.
If I'm doing something wrong, please let me know. Cuz I really want to go back
to AOKP!

This is true, stock wasnt horrifically as bad as I thought it would be then again I wanted to see cm9 running on this. Can you recommend a stock-like custom rom in the dev section? Or just stock itself is getting par performance as the custom ones?

I don't know what I could possibly be doing wrong.
I've tried two different SIII phones.
My LTE and also my 20Mbps WiFi.
Three different CM9/CM10 based ROM's.
Stock browser & Dolphin.
Always full wipe between ROM flashes.
Tried naked ROM's, without any setup or app installs by me.
Stock works great, CM9/CM10 doesn't.

Running CM10 and Chrome and that page is perfectly smooth once it finally loads. From my experience, loading 50 animated GIFs at once is murder on any connection.
Okay this is distressing.
I've tried EVERYTHING to get CM9/CM10/AOKP to work smoothly on the page I linked above. Nothing worked.
And stock works perfectly each & every time I go back to it, on the first try.
Is there ANYONE else on CM9/CM10/AOKP who gets studdering/jerky behavior with those gifs? After the page loads up, the gifs should start playing and keep playing smoothly as you scroll up & down the page. No stopping, then starting.
in aokp/chrome, the scrolling is smooth yes but the gif playback kinda lags behind until you lift your finger off the touchscreen or until the scrolling stops

What rom do you have on your phone?
Why do you like it?
What dont you like about it?
Im curious to see what everyone is running
So far ive ran aokp, paranoid android, and cm10.
Im currently on cm10 and enjoy how professional it is. (explaining the swag button to potent galaxy buyers was kind of tough)
I would have kept paranoid android but the profiles didnt work and i didnt know how to use the dpi changer.
I also started this thread to see who uses android development ROMS instead of the original development ones
Im mainly interested in the non original android development roms users and their oppinions but everyone's answer is appreciated
My favorite was Codename Android, besides one major flaw that myself and very few others experienced: Impossible to send SMS longer than 160 characters, regardless of settings/reflashes/apn/etc. Just because it was the smoothest ROM for me.
I value UI smoothness above all else and have yet to find a ROM that is truly stutter free.
CM10 is ok, but if you go to clock and swipe to the side to go to timer it stutters like a pentium 2 running Crysis: Warhead.
Stock ICS ROM's lag, as well Facebook/third party app scrolling has constant stutter reminiscing of SGS1
JB Leaks (LIF, LIG, LIH) give me blackscreen reboots once in a while, although noticeably smoother than ICS.
I didn't mention battery life as quite frankly I can get a day of usage with every ROM I have tried so far which is nearly all of them.
I think I'm using stock ROM right now as I was fed up and just restored an old nandroid... I guess its ok, everything just works, lots of stutter's though. Doesn't have that premium feel you expect of a device at this price point.

I have tried multiple versions of it, still stutters on homescreen sometimes. Same Timer stutter as CM10 and annoying alarm bug (although there is a fix, it's inconvenient). As well the Nova launcher that AOKP uses, and pretty much all third party launchers have a little input lag due to non native integration or no hardware acceleration (not sure which, but the input lag is there).
Anyway I'll take my fluidity rant somewhere else, people seem happy with the current state of the phone.

The childishness of aokp turned me off since i looked at the boot logo but my gripes can all be easily fixed /hidden.
I havent noticed the speed difference but i do see tge lag you speak about but ive dismissed it as a hardware being underpowered to the rom issue and dont notice it as much anymore

I had been running AOKP for a week or so, I like its customization better than that of other ROMs.
I just yesterday found a new ROM called Paranoid KANGdroid. It pulls from CM10, AOKP, and Paranoid Android. Has pretty much all the features of all three. So much customization, I love it. Not fully stable, though, its only a few days old.
