Hey there apologies if this should have been in q &a but I have been offered a preowned htc wildfire for £80 sterling. Assuming the phone in good working order is this good value? Also I notice from this forum the phone is called htc wildfire (buzz) what does the buzz mean(if anything)? Is there a wildfire that doesn't have buzz in the name? Any help or info greatly appreciated thanks.

Don't. Just stay away from the Wildfire, unless you're already stuck with it.
(Buzz is the code name, just like how Bravo is for the Desire (I think))
Can't really comment on the value of the phone, since I am not a local (Although, converting it in my local currency, it seems fair enough, although a bit overpriced).
The Buzz is HTC's internal codename of the device. As long as you buy a GSM Wildfire, all of them are also called "Buzz". This is true of all the HTC Devices (Wildfire = Buzz, HD2 = Leo, Desire = Bravo, Desire S = Saga etc).
One last thing, the Wildfire's internals are absolutely dated, so don't keep high expectations (Especially if you game on your phone)
EDIT - Ninja'ed, but I guess its the same thing
Cheers guys btw I have Xperia x10 so I on dated device anyway to some extent.

Does HTC Desire has all the new functions on HTC Wildfire like HTC Caller ID that shows the caller’s Facebook status and a birthday reminder? app recommendation? flash support? etc..
I think so. The Wildfire is basically a similar and more affordable version of the Desire, but with lower specs and smaller screen.
As of now the desire doesn't have the new "features" yet, I guess we'll see them when HTC ships sense for froyo.
Wildfire is the baby version of the Desire that I was going to buy my girlfriend.
So whenever she forgets who's boss, we compare benchmarks

LOL that made me laugh! isnt the wildfire a little cheaper? you might as well go for the desire for longer life and easier to support but after saying that i was thinking about doing the same thing, then thought desire and then my brother mentioned apple!

Well, the Widfire is essentially the "Student" version, it's meant to bring all the power of Social Networking etc that the others bring in a more affordable design.
I was having a nice chat with a couple of lovely young ladies doing a promotion in a local store yesterday after I finished explaining the specs of their phones to them, and how I love to f*** with their firmwares.
Does anyone know the approx. price-tag for the Wildefire? I'm thinking of buying one for my gf.
About 300€
so I pretty much decided I'm getting the HTC Desire over the Nexus one, but now with the Desire HD's release about 1 month away I'm debating whether or not to wait.
To be honest I'm in love with the HD's huge screen and looks, but looks alone don't cut it for me. I plan to jump on board the modding/rooting community as soon as I can (just starting out atm) and the Desire is the better choice when it comes to that since its been rooted and messed around with already.
I just worry that I will have to wait a very long time for the Desire HD to be rooted successfully, or it will turnout to be hard to hack and play with like the Nexus one and Desire as I want to try my hand at some hacking myself.
what do you think I should do?
Thanks in advance
EDIT: ok thanks everyone for the replies, I've pretty much decided to go with the Desire. I need a phone I can play around with right away so the Desire would be the better choice. Maybe in the near future when I need a new phone android phones will be more out of the box hacker friendly (hints @ HTC)
If I were you I'd take the HD, but after hTC's stunt with the T-Mobile G2, I'm not so sure at all. If you really want to customise your phone properly, then your best bet would be the Desire.
I'm after the HD now, as i'm a phone whore. So if you want a Desire £230 if you fancy it, unbranded, used but never damaged. Screen mint, phone mint. PM if your interested.

what stunt? and i am leaning more towards the desire at the moment because its more customizable. i'll look around the Desire HD forum for more info, maybe that will help me decide.

Desire!
definetly a Desire. A guy at work got one today and i was well jelous until i saw it in the flesh.
The screen is bigger but the resolution isnt much higher than the desire resulting in a big average screen.
Obviously the cloud features are a benifit but no doublt a custom rom will turn up with them on sooner or later.
Aye. supposedly we're going to get the HD sense package for our desires in December too! w00t.

I think you should go for Desire. Spending more money just for HD features when your use is mainly for modding - ahhh... doesnt make sense to me

Hey, what do you mean by Free of Market Restrictions? (sorry for going offtopic)
I have a Desire and wanted a Desire HD. Until I noticed, it's not the hardware I want. It's the software.
I think the design of the Desire is better.
I also like the physical buttons more. (My mom got a Wildfire, I had using it cause I always accidently hit the capatative buttons).
I think the size is perfect. Sometimes I feel like I wouldn't mind if the Desire was bigger. At other times when using with 1 hand, I find it a bit big.
It's the nw HTC Sense that I noticed I REALLY want. And I'm gonna get that anyway. Officially or modded.

oh yeah, i heard that this feature was on the motorola Droid, had no idea HTC did that same thing to the G2. While the phone will most likely be sold here unbranded and unlocked, since I got Legend which was exclusively sold by vodaphone unbranded and unlocked, i think it will most likely be a built-in hardware feature regardless of whether or not its exclusive to a certain carrier. that seems to be the on going trend right now with HTC and other manufacturers.
___
at the moment the Desire seems to be the better choice for me, i was considering the HD version based purely on physical looks. after seeing the HD2 in person i loved the huge screen and i thought the Desire HD will be like a buffed up android version of the HD2. i know the Desire will eventually get the updated Sense UI so i have no worries regarding the software.
As for the camera, 5MP is good enough for me when i want to take pictures on the go, otherwise i bring along a real camera with me. I don't think phone cameras are good enough to replace an actual camera just yet.

I want to jump on the band wagon here cos im in the same boat, and this thread has thrown a spanner in the works!!
Ive currently got a rooted hero but lack the power from a 1ghz amongst other things....ive played in length with the Desire and genuinely love it, but its knocking on a bit now so am tempted to hold out for the Desire HD as the price is only £100 diff.
What are we saying about the new HD ? Is it likely to going to be a ball ache to do what the desire already does well.....dont get me wrong ill wait for the dev work to catch up but obviously if theres **** hard coded designed to prevent rooting is it gonna be worth it?
also im going unbranded this time....if that makes a difference (aside from the obvious lack of network restrictions!)
I'd suggest wait till the community has successfully rooted the HD, then decide
aww I was gonna go buy the Desire tomorrow, now I can't decide again haha
I can call HTC's distributor here and ask them when exactly the device will release here and how much it will be for. When i was comparing between the Nexus and Desire the price was almost the same but now there is obviously going to be a significant price difference.
I guess for me now it all comes down to the price and customization ability.
I've checked the Desire HD's forums and there seems to be a temporary root solution for it at the moment. Looks like they are still working on it.

I have a challenge for any Techheads out there who are up for the challenge
I'm not sure if this has been brought to the table already but my question is:- Would a HTC Eris or HTC Hero screen be transplantable into a HTC Wildfire? .... as i noticed the screens of the HTC Wildfire, Eris and Hero are all the same size.
Now, my reasons for this is cause I feel that the Wildfire has a bit better hardware compared to the other two phones but what would make the Wildfire a better phone would be a screen with better resolution so therefore apps would look a little better and therefore be more appealing to the eye when it comes to photos and video playback as well as general usage... it just brings a smile to my face to think that there is a possibility...
If anyone wants to put this challenge up... by all means but i would like a little credit when it comes time for the writeup of the tutorial on how to perform this
Well, I don't think its possible..
1. The other phones have 3.2 inch displays but with different aspect ratios. Wildfire has an AR of 4:3 given the 320x240 resolution. Hero has a different AR because of the 320x480 resolution.
2. Wildfire has the home/back/menu/search buttons on the digitiser. Other phones have physical buttons.
In conclusion it would be very, very hard is not impossible to use another screen. Not to mention the software driver problems that would appear.

i'm pretty certain that the eris is actually like the wildfire... i could be wrong have been before but yeah...
as i said this is a challenge so if anyone is interested please feel free to show you workings as they come along... but i do believe that the eris is closest to being a candidate.. hero an option as i was thinking of using the digitiser from the wildfire to control the screen... possibly.
Yes, Eris is a close match... maybe someone can do it. I have my doubts, though.
I bags the OP to do it, if i do it, i might crap the **** out of my phone and destroy myself.
@kevin 2516
Sure no worries.... OP please can you try this MOD as see if it would work or tell us if it would work and if the fitting for the lcd screen needs to be modded heavily to do this, as i would love to see a higher res on this phone...
The only reason why i'm asking is:-
1) I don't have a spare phone.
2) I don't have the spare cash to try something like this
3) I don't have the knowledge nor the tools to perform this
4) All i want in return is a note of credit for having the original idea.
also if the person/s who complete this can get it done right and it works.. think of the GOOGLE FAME!!! and how HTC would increase its sales of wildfire due to this simple and small mod... not to mention cheap too
i'm pretty sure it won't work anyway due to different software, hardware drivers etc etc, and if someone does try it, and kills their phone, there goes precious money. :| I don't think most will try it.
Although, i might if i get a desire or desire hd ...
After i get a new phone(i hope in a month) i could try it if i have the money for a screen.

That would be great and stick it to htc for releasing, what i consider a premium phone.
i just hope its as simple as changing a computer screen over... (read: Plug n play)
It won't work if the rom doesn't have the drivers

i think it's cheaper/less time consuming to buy a new phone.
I like the idea tho'
i have seen another thread in this forum where superLED and AMOLED screens can be changed over...
I think it's unfair that all the BIGGER phones get cool upgrades for free and us Wildfire fans get a **** screen but awesome phone... plus to add to that if someone could write a driver for the screen to be compatible... would be very sweet indeed.
sorry for the late reply
Well think about it this way. If the screen comes from another htc phone (or any other phone for that matter) the screen drivers from that phone's rom can theoretically be used in a custom wildfire rom.
well now that the wildfire s is out... has anyone ported the wildfire s screen to wildfire.... i guess the screen size is almost same.....
Completely non-technical question here. I am looking at selling my HTC Desire HD and maybe getting a HTC HD 7. I have no intention of spending any money in order to get a new phone as at the current time I cannot afford it.
What would be a reasonable price to sell my Desire HD at, and what would be the best alternate Android or WP7 phone I could buy with the money from the sale (new or used), all opinions welcome.
*Before you flame me and say I have not researched my question, I have, its just the price of sales vary so much. My Desire HD is in perfect condition apart from the Matte on the Camera has rubbed off slightly.

Look at the volume rocker, is it loose (my friends have DHD's and our volume rockers have all fallen out at some point). Is the bottom SIM/SD Card cover loose (generally indicates the phone has had a rough life). Are all of the letters on tge HTC still attached (sounds stupid but, again, it indicates it has had a rough life). GPS works OK (either a Software or Hardware fault, hardware fault means the phone has been treated badly). Gap near the top of the screen between bezel and actual screen indicates previous repair. Software wise, ask if it's rooted, custom ROM/custom Recovery.

I don't think buying a used desire hd is a good idea.i think you can consider about buying a incredible s or desire s for they have offical ICS release.
dhd is a good device but it is too old.or you can choose sensation.
^Good point. Although I love my DHD, the Sensation (XL preferably) is the better choice, even if it is more expensive
Sent from my inter galactic super fantastic communication device.
Actually for any phone and not just DHD, it's always recommended to check that all hardware keys are working and not loose. Also, check that most of those features which you think you need most are working fine. If you have time, of course check the whole phone inside out
Thanks for answers. That's what i needed..

I know about this, but don't have enough money for something more expensive, unfortunatly. Incredible s has 4.0inch and desire s 3.7inch and i'm looking for phone with 4.3 (HTC Desire HD or LD 3D-teribble software).
What about new full functional ICS release for HD, that's almost like official version?

Are you planning to buy it online (ebay, amazon, etc) or at a local store? Buying a used device online is a little bit risky.
Before buying used desire hd. Chack if everything is working fine. Even rom. And check warranty
Check the battery !
If the foil normally white on the slide of the battery is red, the bat has been wetted...
Check the Volume rocker, it breaks easily though!
