Does HTC Desire has all the new functions on HTC Wildfire like HTC Caller ID that shows the caller’s Facebook status and a birthday reminder? app recommendation? flash support? etc..
I think so. The Wildfire is basically a similar and more affordable version of the Desire, but with lower specs and smaller screen.
As of now the desire doesn't have the new "features" yet, I guess we'll see them when HTC ships sense for froyo.
Wildfire is the baby version of the Desire that I was going to buy my girlfriend.
So whenever she forgets who's boss, we compare benchmarks

LOL that made me laugh! isnt the wildfire a little cheaper? you might as well go for the desire for longer life and easier to support but after saying that i was thinking about doing the same thing, then thought desire and then my brother mentioned apple!

Well, the Widfire is essentially the "Student" version, it's meant to bring all the power of Social Networking etc that the others bring in a more affordable design.
I was having a nice chat with a couple of lovely young ladies doing a promotion in a local store yesterday after I finished explaining the specs of their phones to them, and how I love to f*** with their firmwares.
Does anyone know the approx. price-tag for the Wildefire? I'm thinking of buying one for my gf.
About 300€
Guys, I've gotten the oppertunity to trade my current silver HTC Desire, which I trully love. For a brand new HTC Desire HD.
Should I go for it or not? No sneaky catch, it's just my mom needs a new phone, she doesn't care what phone. So I could get a Desire HD with this and she gets my 'old' Desire.
gotten the same oppertunity here, my dad needs a new phone!
Go for it!!
Why not!!
I'm really interested in the Desire HD. But I also REALLLLLYYYY love my SILVER Desire.
My previous phone was a crappy HP iPAQ Data Messenger running WM6.1, so I didn't feel bad at all getting rid of that. But this is my Desire dude! MY DESIREE!
Edit:
What requires a Google Account? As she doesn't have Gmail and you know about Android...

maybe it will take a long time until root, s-off and uvoc is available, and it might lack good cooked roms and developers. it could be like htc legend and wildfire, nothing really happens at those forums
Why does rooting need to be the main reason to get a phone? Wouldn't be in my case
I've never modded my Desire in anyway. No root, no flash, no nothing. So that ain't the deal breaker.

Desire has 1.5gb internal storage, and a WiFi hotspot, so I tend to agree that rooting it probably isn't going to be as big an issue for many.
In addition, the extras you get from htcsense.com, means it's unlikely you would want to replace the Sense ROM with an AOSP ROM.

Dave

Thinking about it, if your mum doesn't care which phone, get the HD, and buy her a PAYG Orange San Francisco. That way, you can either keep your Desire, or you can sell it!

Lol, not that extreme neither. She wants a phone with which she can call, text and read her mail quickly.
She's not an avid internet browser or a crazy install all app-er. She just want to get access to her mail and sometimes chat via MSN.
Well don't think so much. Get HD, or if you do not want I'll give my for one HD
Well, the HD is for me just way too big. The Desire 's got the perfect size imo - only option for me were the Z (but I just replaced my HD2 with a Desire last week, so I won't switch too early - maybe in January).
Be careful, there are numerous reports about the Desire HD's display looking "washed out"... Some people says the display looks really low quality.
The Desire screen is a dream to look at so I wouldn't trade a gorgeous looking 3.7" screen for a slightly bigger one that has washed out colors. Of course the HD have many other advantages but the display is very important to me at least... It was just a warning, just do a google search if you don't believe me...
Try it at least your mum will have the desire. If you don't like the HD try and get her to trade for the HD and you get your desire back.

I got sick of the size of my HD2, you can't get into a car without having to remove it from your pocket, it's bulky, they are pretty much one drop wonders as well with a screen that big. The battery life is pathetic and of course, with the Desire HD the battery will drain faster as it's only 1230 mAh quite a bit smaller than the Desires 1400 mAh battery. Coming from a HD2 to a Desire, you really notice that extra juice.
I am so happy with my Desire at the moment I wouldn't swap it for another phone.

Here is a good one...Market enabler, like in my case , if you live in a country where google does not support paid apps to yet..Otherwise you essensially get a crippled 2k app phone (most of which are wallpaper apps, ringtones and clocks or batt widgets)
I wouldnt trade.....the battery from that device sucks even harder.
just a teeny question, doesn't TFT screens suck less juice than AMOLEDs?
that's probably why HTC is using a smaller battery on the HD

it really depends..the new slcd type is tested and has about same and when displaying white content even better battery life..i am not aware what type of screen the desire hd uses though..
so I pretty much decided I'm getting the HTC Desire over the Nexus one, but now with the Desire HD's release about 1 month away I'm debating whether or not to wait.
To be honest I'm in love with the HD's huge screen and looks, but looks alone don't cut it for me. I plan to jump on board the modding/rooting community as soon as I can (just starting out atm) and the Desire is the better choice when it comes to that since its been rooted and messed around with already.
I just worry that I will have to wait a very long time for the Desire HD to be rooted successfully, or it will turnout to be hard to hack and play with like the Nexus one and Desire as I want to try my hand at some hacking myself.
what do you think I should do?
Thanks in advance
EDIT: ok thanks everyone for the replies, I've pretty much decided to go with the Desire. I need a phone I can play around with right away so the Desire would be the better choice. Maybe in the near future when I need a new phone android phones will be more out of the box hacker friendly (hints @ HTC)
If I were you I'd take the HD, but after hTC's stunt with the T-Mobile G2, I'm not so sure at all. If you really want to customise your phone properly, then your best bet would be the Desire.
I'm after the HD now, as i'm a phone whore. So if you want a Desire £230 if you fancy it, unbranded, used but never damaged. Screen mint, phone mint. PM if your interested.

what stunt? and i am leaning more towards the desire at the moment because its more customizable. i'll look around the Desire HD forum for more info, maybe that will help me decide.

Desire!
definetly a Desire. A guy at work got one today and i was well jelous until i saw it in the flesh.
The screen is bigger but the resolution isnt much higher than the desire resulting in a big average screen.
Obviously the cloud features are a benifit but no doublt a custom rom will turn up with them on sooner or later.
Aye. supposedly we're going to get the HD sense package for our desires in December too! w00t.

Hey, what do you mean by Free of Market Restrictions? (sorry for going offtopic)
I have a Desire and wanted a Desire HD. Until I noticed, it's not the hardware I want. It's the software.
I think the design of the Desire is better.
I also like the physical buttons more. (My mom got a Wildfire, I had using it cause I always accidently hit the capatative buttons).
I think the size is perfect. Sometimes I feel like I wouldn't mind if the Desire was bigger. At other times when using with 1 hand, I find it a bit big.
It's the nw HTC Sense that I noticed I REALLY want. And I'm gonna get that anyway. Officially or modded.

oh yeah, i heard that this feature was on the motorola Droid, had no idea HTC did that same thing to the G2. While the phone will most likely be sold here unbranded and unlocked, since I got Legend which was exclusively sold by vodaphone unbranded and unlocked, i think it will most likely be a built-in hardware feature regardless of whether or not its exclusive to a certain carrier. that seems to be the on going trend right now with HTC and other manufacturers.
___
at the moment the Desire seems to be the better choice for me, i was considering the HD version based purely on physical looks. after seeing the HD2 in person i loved the huge screen and i thought the Desire HD will be like a buffed up android version of the HD2. i know the Desire will eventually get the updated Sense UI so i have no worries regarding the software.
As for the camera, 5MP is good enough for me when i want to take pictures on the go, otherwise i bring along a real camera with me. I don't think phone cameras are good enough to replace an actual camera just yet.

I want to jump on the band wagon here cos im in the same boat, and this thread has thrown a spanner in the works!!
Ive currently got a rooted hero but lack the power from a 1ghz amongst other things....ive played in length with the Desire and genuinely love it, but its knocking on a bit now so am tempted to hold out for the Desire HD as the price is only £100 diff.
What are we saying about the new HD ? Is it likely to going to be a ball ache to do what the desire already does well.....dont get me wrong ill wait for the dev work to catch up but obviously if theres **** hard coded designed to prevent rooting is it gonna be worth it?
also im going unbranded this time....if that makes a difference (aside from the obvious lack of network restrictions!)
I'd suggest wait till the community has successfully rooted the HD, then decide
aww I was gonna go buy the Desire tomorrow, now I can't decide again haha
I can call HTC's distributor here and ask them when exactly the device will release here and how much it will be for. When i was comparing between the Nexus and Desire the price was almost the same but now there is obviously going to be a significant price difference.
I guess for me now it all comes down to the price and customization ability.
I've checked the Desire HD's forums and there seems to be a temporary root solution for it at the moment. Looks like they are still working on it.

Should i buy the Desire? It's pretty cheap, i haven't got much money, and i need a decent phone? I currently have a LG Optimus One, but i need something a bit more exquisite. Will i notice any performance difference? Oh and i was thinking of a Nexus One as well, but i've been comparing these two and the Desire seems to win!
It may be 2 years old but it has a great fanbase with a great selection of custom roms. I am due for renewal in April but I seriously cannot see anything that justifies me to commiting myself to another 18 month contract just yet, that's how good this phone is. It really is holding its own even now and I would without hesitation say go for it. If you get one second hand then just check the hardware buttons to make sure they work (my volume down button is starting to need a hard press to work) and if you get an unrooted one then you have got all the rooting stuff to enjoy as well I would get this over the Nexus One, in fact I spent a week putting phone against phone and eliminating them one by one when I first got my Desire. A cracking phone even now.

Wow, thanks, i am definitely getting the desire, i am already used to rooting and flashing so it's no biggie, thanks a bunch for the complete answer, you totally made me change my mind about buying a Nexus One which is actually more expensive in 2nd hand here.

He seems to favour the HTC Legend a bit more. Is it any better than the Desire? The con of the Legend is not a con now, i think i could get it for the same price as the Desire.
Thanks for the helpful review haha!
EDIT*
Nevermind, the screen is way smaller, i'm going with the Desire, since i want a bigger screen.
I just bought a Desire for similar reasons, I had come from a ZTE Blade. It is a great phone and I am very happy with it.
You can compare phone specs at www.gsmarena.com so thats worth a go.

desire for sure
if you cant spend the money to buy desire s or desire hd, then its htc desire for sure
and htc legend doesnt even come close to htc desire
and with the great devs at xda, you'll always have something to do with your desire

I cannot afford a Desire HD or S unfortunately, so i am going for the Desire, thanks for the help!
After about a year and a half of joyful use with my HTC desire...It died two days ago...in a tragic twister accident...the screen no longer displays anything but a few white lines, yet the touch screen still works...i just cant see what im typing...or what im doing, not very practical.
Now What should i do now...send it off for repair, being in mind it has a custom Rom on it, Or just buy a new phone...another htc desire? or?
Thanks for your opinions
You are considering getting another HTC Desire? A 2 year old obsolete piece of technology?
Man you have a valid reason to upgrade then why not do it. At least go with HTC DesireS or something.
Haha my desire is like my son!
haha, true this is my opportunity...TO EBAY! lol..not sure if i really trust ebay tho !
You could get a beater phone and use it until you find a phone you want on eBay, kijiji, etc. Or until the one you want releases.

Sensation imo.
Or maybe step outside the square and go Nokia Lumia900
I would say send it for repair, there is no issue what so ever with your phone contaning custom rom, to my opinion it is just your LCD display died, it is nothing compare a new device cost, if you repare it you mite even get a good price for it, which will make your new phone cheeper.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
I don't think repairing it will be worth it. The display costs about 60-70 Euros and if you don't repair it on your own, it gets even more expensive.
I got a new Nexus S for my girlfriend for 200,- Euros, so...
If you got some "good hands", there are planty of you tube movies how to replace the lcd, and if you go to item number 300640556669 on ebay, you will find the display for about 28€.

Thank you for all of the replies, I went into the 3 store. they said if it is accidental damage, it will be repaired for free.
as their is no visable scratches or damage, i hope they can do for free.
Now, once its repaired, i might try and sell the desire, and get a sensation...and if it cant be repaired, ill try to fix it my self, which will be a fun project!
