Have I bricked it? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had MIUI on this Desire (it's my dads) but it have some bugs so I wanted to return it to defaults. I downloaded the RUU_Brav2_UK_1.20.207.1_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06 .00.02_2_release_124865.exe file from this thread. During the install on my pc, an error occurred. Something like certain files couldn't be written. Now when I power on the phone I get a HTC logo with 4 hazard signs <!> on each corner. Even trying to get into recovery holding power and volume down does nothing.
All I want to do it return it to normal. Any ideas?

Other than flashing a rom, did you do anything else?
What does ALL the information on your HBOOT say?

The error message mentioned about unable to copy files. But the dialogue closed and I didnt have the information. Only thing I got as I said is the HTC logo with the 4 exclamation points around each corner of the screen.
My phone or computer isnt giving me anymore information, at least, I don't know how to access anymore. Only thing I know is power+vol down but that no longer works.
Edit: Here is the error message in fact:

OK well, assuming you are on o2 UK, the one you want is this one:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_144166_signed.exe
Now what you need to do is pull, the battery out. Reinsert the battery. Hold Back and press power to turn on. This will put you into fastboot mode. This would normally be a white screen that says fastboot, but now it will be the screen with the 4 /!\'s on it.
Now connect the USB cable, wait at least 5 seconds and then run the new RUU.
Let me know.
Edit, You definitely didn't s-off or change the hboot or anything did you?

I did exactly as you advised. Still getting the exact same error as the image above.
In regards to S-off. I'm worried by your words. The phone did originally have S-off with the MIUI. So now I'm worried I owe my dad a new phone..

Did it have the cm 7 hboot?
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

I dont know..but I will go with no since I don't know what that truly is. All I ever did was root it using the instructions on this forum, then install MIUI. Then I went to this.

If you were willing to start a new thread you should also be willing to read an existing one. Read my troubleshooting guide.

hmm well. Your tutorial talks about:
S-OFF
[STEP1]- download "Bravo Stock" from Alpharev
[STEP2]- download Android Flasher
[STEP3]- use android flasher to flash "Bravo Stock"
[STEP4]- run the RUU again and wait for it to finish

How do I flash this bravo stock? It's an iso and the programme doesnt like it. Does it go in bootloader? I dunno.
And the gold card method requires me to enable debugging in the menu which I can't do since I'm stuck in RUU mode.

Were you even S-OFF? if you weren't then there's no need/ possibility of playing about with the hboot.
Trust me, everything is there. You just need to read it, problem with goldcard? look in the goldcard section.
Or if you're lazy you could risk using the 2.3 RUU.

The phone was S-OFF before this DUU. The flasher programme in the tutorial doesn't like the iso file to flash it to either.

What iso file? There should be no ISO. fIle
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk

Sorry, forget ISO, I was looking at something else.
Here are the stages I've done thus far.
Downloaded bravo_alphaspl.img
Ran AndroidFlasher, put bravo_alphaspl.img into the bootloader area.
Ticked box saying I'm already in fastboot.
click flash.
Then I get this:
writing 'hboot'...
(bootloader) signature checking...
FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail)

Here is all the information I have, in case someone has a fix.
My desire was on MIUI. I then tried another rom, which I didn't like too much either. I foolishly decided to use a wrong stock file and ended up locking my phone into RUU. My phone is now S-ON. I've tried all suggestions in this thread and I went over the troubleshooting thread.
The goldcard tutorial blew my mind, but I tried anyway and fell on the first hurdle when the ReadCID programme doesn't work (Win 7 x64). And I have the right framework installed.
At the moment the phone is a paperweight and I will have to find him an another phone on ebay, since it was my stupidity which bricked this.
If anyone knows a simple way of fixing this, please let me know. Yeah I said simple, because although I have messed with roms, I still know NOTHING. Look at my previous posts in this thread, I clearly don't know what I'm doing which is no wonder I bricked it.
In case this is bricked for life I'm off now to find a phone on ebay. Not an android phone as I'm sure you will agree, for a 65 year old man, who knows NOTHING about android phones, he will never use it to a fraction of its potential.
I hope someone will find a solution, then I can at least sell this on ebay to recoup my losses. But until then, its time to spend money I don't have.
Thanks in advance.

Can you boot into hboot / fastboot?

Im not sure how to find out. All that happens is when I power on the phone I'm stuck in RUU mode. Androidflasher does interact with it, but throws up errors. Complaining that my phone is S-ON so cannot continue.

Your question does not help me at all. So turn off your phone. Now press and hold first volume down (alternative: back) button and then power button. Do you get a white screen with three androids at the bottom after a few seconds?

All I get is the HTC logo on a black background with 4 /!\ around each corner.
If I plug in a usb cable and remove it, the screen turns white with the following information:
BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
MICROP-051d

All you can do is ruu from fastboot screen.
Best bet is using the 2.3.3 one. When / if it fails, go for warranty repair.

Is there a link to this 2.33 one? Ones ive tried so far were wrongly RUU_Brav2_UK_1.20.207.1_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_124865 and then RUU_Bravo_Froy2_UK_2.14.207.1_Radio_32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_144166_signed. Neither which works.

Stuck at boot logo...plz help !!

ok so i picked up an evo from a guy a craigslist for very cheap. he stated in the ad that it was stuck at boot screen....and he really didnt wanna do anything with it cause he went and got an iphone.
so i kinda need help fixing it.
i press vol down and poWer and i can get to the white screen with different options. ***S-ON =(***
if i skip down to recovery it boots back up the the evo 4g white screen and just stays there.
im guessing he was attemping to root and messed up some how or something...
he did have an sd card so i downloaded a pc36img.zip hoping it will just do its thing and it says the main version is older.
i do know its hboot 1.10.0001 radio 2.15.00.11.19
ive been looking through threads for hours on multiple forums and nothing as really help.
You could try to restore it to factory by running the ruu. Try downloading this ruu and run it. You will need to have HTC sync installed as well; get it from htc.com or just google it.
This will restore phone back to factory.

Did you mean 2.10.0001? Also, you downloaded a PCIMG36.zip of what? I would try running the RUU that pertains to that hboot and then take it from there. You can find the latest RUU here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=86NCAM22
Or in a flashable zip here:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MUSAURP7
yeah i meant 2.10 on the hboot.....sorry
i ran one of those ruu exe and right when it said check my phone. it gave me an error saying my battery was lower than 30%. i have another evo and it was charged to 100% so i switch out the batteries and it still told me i was lower than 30%.
im going to put htc sync and try it again.
ok...so after i installed htc sync, and ran the ruu exe, it told me it couldnt detect my phone. i had the phone at the white ecreen with hboot selected.
i also tried the flashable one and i got OKs across the board.
asked me to reboot...pressed yes, and just turned off.

Since you can't ruu try this pc36img.zip. Your phone needs to be on to ruu exe in windows and htc sync has to detect it. Here take this file rename it to PC36IMG.zip (just the way I have it) and see if that works for you. Put on root of sdcard as normal. The good thing is that you have hboot at least.

this is the same thing i did with the picture posted. ive downloaded that same file 3 times and have done this over 10 times with OKs after everything installs from the renamed PC36IMG.zip.
i reboot after everything installs and still gets stuck at the white htc evo 4g screen.
htc sync will not detect the phone while in hboot. my computer detects android 1.0 , but i have no sync...wierd.
i dont know if the guy that had it before ever did a nand unlock if that matters ?
anything else ?

If he tried to downgrade the hboot and messed it up then you have a nice looking paper weight. There's no way he'd admit to it though. You should check out that thread the guy above you posted man.

kinda gave me some hope.
then the ruu aborted for some reason.
FFS!!!
Tried the ruu one more time...after getting a different screen and a bit of hope. The Evo bricked now....wont turn on..no amber light when plugged in to wall charger. Well there goes that idea. Now I'm scared to flash again with my own Evo :/

I think you bought a phone that was semi-bricked already. It probably had a bad hboot and that's why they sold it. Almost everyone posting on this site has flashed their phone with something well over 100 times without an issue, so don't think that bricks are a common problem. You tried to get a good deal, and it didn't work out. It happens all the time, man. Sorry it didn't work out for you.
I think you'll get $100 on eBay easy for it; even as a parts phone.
yeah...im going to post it on ebay today.
im seeing ones with water damage go over $50
also see one that is at $150 labeled as broken and screen isnt on in any of the pics.
**update: my gf wanted to be curious. she called htc directly and the phone is still under manufacturer warranty. they said as long as the phone doesnt have water damage or physical damage it would be covered. if warranty is voided in any way then it will cost me $30 for them to ship it back broken.
so now i figure if S-ON...and they somehow get the phone back on and see the phone wasnt rooted then i should be golden right ?
i feel like charlie sheen right now WINNING!!
wow....i dont mean to double post but im really feeling good about this.
i have 2 other evos that i also bought on craigslist.....and i never noticed that the both of them are missing the water damage sticker under the cover.
this random evo has the water sticker in tact and had s-on....
im literally doing backflips...

The "Screen of Death" for the HTC is something rare and in most cases hard to recover, but you can still try some things:
1) Do you have guarantee for it. If you do you are cleared from the first. Go with your phone to them an tell them you tried to apply an OTA and this is the result. Since you ran the RUU you don't have ROOT or S-OFF anymore so you are clean.
2) Can you go in HBOOT. If yes follow this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880268 , 2nd post) on how to get the PB99IMG from the RUU and try flashing it from SDCARD in hboot.
I will still dig on your problem, maybe find something, but I think you wrote on a bad part of the phone and it wasn't written well.
EDIT: You don't have to create the gold card in your phone, since the gold card is unique by SDCard and not by phone. So find someone with a phone and create it using their phone and then u can use it.
I see.
I still have S=off after trying the RUU and went to error at the end when I unplug my usb cable I can see hboot.
saying the info on the first post.
but it says something with partition error
edit: when the phone is off. its normal because I can charge it using a charger or via pc.
when pressing power it doesnt vibrate.
It turns on then black background with a big white HTC logo at the center.
4 traingles with exclamation marks at the four corners of the screen
edit:it completely powers on!
my only problem now is I dont have hboot screen so evrytime my phone reboots or shuts down.
I have to connect it to pc and use fastboot :/
will alpharev tool fix this?
managed to go to cwm recovery using the command fastboot oem boot
it boots but now on boot loop :/
after unplugging my battery then turning it on it goes back to black screen with the four exclamation marks on it
sigh
Well if you managed to go to hboot, does it say that it is trying to load PB99IMG.zip from card, or you don't have your sd card mounted?
You need to run the PB99 directly from hboot not from CWM.
Did you flashed another hboot for the ROM? Another Radio for the ROM?
Try to extract the PB99IMG from the latest WWE 2.29.405.5 and run it from boot, and also make a GoldCard and put it in the phone when running it.
Did you get some kind of error number?
We have to take it step by step and try everything and maybe fix it.
If you need to mound SD Card try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531310 , maybe it can help you.
LEDIT: To create a goldcard see this: http://www.nazriawang.com/2010/04/how-to-create-goldcard-with-ubuntu.html
LLEDIT: Also you should read this thread's from the beginning till end. Even though they are for bricked display, you can follow them and it is all very well explained.

Well if this is what the RUU says then I'm afraid you can't install it since you changed the partitions of the NAND with the custom HBOOT. Maybe trying to flash the stock HBOOT will get you fixed.
I'm not too sure if the custom HBOOT could stop you from installing the RUU but from what you tell this could be the only reason.
Since you still have ROOT and S-OFF you should be able to flash it either by fastboot or by CWM.
After you install the stock HBOOT try to reload the RUU from SD.
EDIT: I dig around a little more on your problem and as jordan.harris01 said you need to downgrade your hboot or to flash the stock HBOOT. The stock HBOOT can be found on AlphaRev homepage.
All of the r2 Hboots prevent the RUU from over-writing it! You need to download the "downgrader" hboot, flash that Hboot and then you'll be able to flash your RUU without problem.

[Q] Droid Incredible 2 stuck on HTC screen. Help?

I've been unable to find any help via Google on how to fix my problem.
I was installing a ROM through Rom Manager when it got stuck on the HTC screen. I had to pull the battery out. I'm able to get into the boot by holding down the volume down button and power, but selecting Recovery only sends to me the HTC screen to get stuck again. I used an app called Nandroid to create a backup on my SD card earlier.
I admit, I'm fairly new to all this (probably why this happened in the first place =/) so if you can explain how to fix my problem in layman's terms that would be great.
By the way, when I'm in the boot menu it says S-Off. I figured saying this now would skip a question later on. Also, when I first get into the boot menu it (very) briefly says something about pg32diag.zip or pg32img.zip not being found.
Use your volume keys to navigate to "recovery" then tap the power button. This will boot you into recovery and you can wipe your data, cache, and reload your ROM or load your nandroid backup
I don't suppose you have adb setup on your cpu do u. the adb reboot recovery command will kick you right to recovery
by the way don't worry about it checking for the pd img and saying not found its suppossed to do that

Same problem... Kinda...
I have almost the same problem. I was installing the Revolution HD rom, and i knew that the first boot was long, so I waited it out. I even went for like a 20 minutes run and my droid incredible 2 was still stuck on the HTC screen. So I pulled the battery. I still cant boot into the rom. However, I can get into the bootloader, but when trying to access recovery mode, my phone is stuck on that stupid HTC screen again... What do I do..?
If I were in your situation, I would probably try to backup and flash recovery again.
But PLEASE don't take my word for it. I would hate for you to brick your phone on my hunch. Wait for someone to chime in that has more experience unless you're as foolish as I am
But it wont allow me to return into recovery...
EDIT:
Now the phone will not boot at all. The battery has lost its charge. I'm guessing the white HTC screen does not allow the phone to charge, which makes no sense becasue I had the phone plugged in the whole time.
How about "factory Reset"

i tried to boot into both. But both resulted in just the small vibration and the flashing of the HTC screen, which remained frozen on the screen until i pulled the battery. To make sure i waited about 20 minutes for each to fully "load", but it shouldnt take 20 minutes to boot into recovery, right...?
Damn. I would give it twice that. Then I don't know what to tell ya. ADB sounds like a good idea, but I never use it and wouldn't have a clue.
Good luck.

EDIT:
Now the phone will not boot at all. The battery has lost its charge. I'm guessing the white HTC screen does not allow the phone to charge, which makes no sense becasue I had the phone plugged in the whole time.

I am also facing the same issue.
Bad ROM
It seems like this problem is caused by installing roms not for the Droid incredible 2. I tried installing a incredible s rom on my device, hoping it would work. It didn't. I also tried to use ADB to boot into recovery or directly flash a new rom from the command line. Neither worked because my computer wouldn't recognize the device. I ended up taking a rooted phone back to the Verizon store. I played dumb, and the idiot didn't hit the correct keys to boot up into the bootloader. I managed to get a new phone
However, your best bet is to try and use ADB to boot into recovery or directly flash new, correct rom. See if your computer recognizes your phone...

Had same problem and reboot recovery works!
Back from the dead, another White Screen
Okay, I know this is resurrecting a long-dormant thread, but it describes EXACTLY the problem I'm having.
I rooted my phone last year with the "Root Your DInc2 Tutorial" - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16671031 process, ran CM7 with no problems until early June when it began bootlooping. I believe the latest OTA was the culprit, but I still have S-OFF.
Initially I found the Back To Stock 2.3.4 RUU and used that since I absolutely had to have my phone working (was on a business trip). However, every few days the OTA would get pushed again, and I'd have to reflash the BTS RUU.
I finally had the chance to successfully re-run the "Root Your DInc2 Tutorial" method a few days ago, but I cannot access RECOVERY or FACTORY RESET from the bootloader- it goes to the white HTC screen from both. Using "adb reboot recovery" does the same thing.
At that time, I ran the Revolutionary.io tool. It of course mocked me for already having S-OFF, and offered to flash CWM. I also used the manual method from the tutorial. adb reports writing the recovery, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
Every time I reboot into the bootloader, it checks for and does not find the PG32DIAG and PG32IMG files.
Is there something simple I'm missing? I have flashed back to 2.3.3, then to 2.3.4, then back to 2.3.3. I have tried flashing several different versions of CWM, 4EXT, and even Amon Ra recoveries. I've tried multiple methods, looked through multiple threads, but still cannot access the recovery.
One I have NOT tried yet is the TacoRoot method - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1726134&page=5 , because I have read that it's riskier. Before I go that route, I'd like to hear from anyone who's successfully solved this problem, or anyone with any ideas. I'm pretty disgusted with the stock Sense and Verizon bullcrap. What am I doing wrong here?

S-OFF is permanant, no need to do it again. Try flashing this RUU, rename it to PG32IMG.zip, put it in the root of your sdcard and boot into bootloader, when it checks, it'll find that and flash it for you, then you can just use a rooted stock ROM, there's a few out there.

That's one of the RUU's I've already tried flashing a few times- I can't recall if it's 2.3.3 or 2.3.4. I'm currently on RUU_Vivo_W_Gingerbread_S_VERIZON_WWE_2.18.605.3_Radio_1.09.01.0622_NV_VZW1.92_release_199487_si.zip In every case, the update skips updating the bootloader. The RUU's work fine after flashing except that I cannot load a recovery to achieve root and install a ROM, make a nandroid, or perform a Factory Reset- trying to select those from the bootloader causes an immediate reboot that then stalls on the white HTC screen.
Any ideas on how to get recovery to work? Do I have a corrupted bootloader? is there any way to fix that, or is this phone crippled?

Flash a recovery with fastboot?

I've renamed the RUU to PG32IMG.zip, put it on the root of the SD, then booted into the bootloader. When the bootloader comes up, it searches for the PG32, finds it, and asks if I would like to apply the update. VOL UP for yes, and it begins extracting. Skips the "Bootloader" step and one or two others I can't remember right now, I do believe the ones labeled "TP" or such. Then reboot, remove the PG32IMG.zip file, and boot into bootloader. At that point, it looks for PG32DIAG and PG32IMG, doesn't find them, and then when I try to go to RECOVERY or FACTORY RESET, it immediately displays the white HTC screen.
The only time I've done anything different was when following the "Root your DInc2 Tutorial" method, where I used both the hack-vivow.cmd and manually entering the commands via adb. And even then, the result was exactly the same- I cannot get to RECOVERY or FACTORY RESET- all I get is the white HTC screen when I select those options.
I've really tried to do everything I can find that seems like it won't totally brick the phone before I came asking for help. I've learned a fair bit, so it's been a worthwhile effort, but I want to have some actual success, you know? As I said, the only thing I have not tried is Tacoroot- I've heard it's more risky and I wanted to see if I had missed anything before jumping into that. I'm also worried that if I DO have something corrupted, it might interfere with the Taco-ing.

Can you use ROM Manager to flash CWM? Or flash 4EXT with the app? You won't have root until you flash the su binary, which you need recovery working to do.

[Q] wildfire s(unrooted) stuck in bootloop HELP!

Hi,my wildfire s was updated from 1.66.401.1 directly to 2.13.401.3 and is now stuck in the white screen (without logo) and continues in a bootloop. Bootloader menu didn`t work. Computer, of course, doesnt see the phone I know it's because I don`t update hboot. But there is any opportunity to fix the phone?
What do you mean by 'bootloader menu didn't work'? Did you try to remove the battery and then use vol down + power ?

You don't normally get bricked when you update your firmware especially if you are s-on and with b/l locked
You should go to the htc shop and show them your phone. They should replace it or atleast repair it.

They should still honour the warranty if your not unlocked and an official update caused the problem.
I think he means the time period of the warranty is over.
Silly question but does the orange/green led come on when you connect it to the charger or computer?

Red led lights up for 10 seconds, after that phone tries to turn on, and starts blinking again.
Is HTC sync installed on your computer? If not, then install it. Because without the drivers, your computer won't recognise the phone.
Do you know how to use adb?

can you boot into fastboot??
(remove the batery re insert it again after 5 sec and then hold the volume down key and power button for mostly 5 sec)
if you can do so then download ny rom extract it and then use the adb commands..
for that you will need adb files
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?b6mk4b8p1xm5nok
download this zip .. unzip on desktop/there are three files in it if the three files are in the folder named android then remove the three files from the folder and paste the three files on dektop..
the rom you downloaded .. extract it..
and copy boot.img and system.img to desktop
when in boot loader.. the fastboot option will be highlighted select it
to select press power button..
when done connect the phone to pc. (dont forget to install htc sync, cuz you wud need drivers for the pc so that it can detect your phone..)
and then go to start menu on task bar..
select Run option..
in run option write cmd and click on ok
from now press enter after every command
Code:
cd desktop
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
now remove the cable from phone..
remove the battery and try rebooting the phone..

i dont get you
If its a softwer problem i dont see why would they demand such "high prices"(you never said how much exactly) if they have the right eqipment compleatly reviving a dead phone will cost you around 20-30 euro. If thats high for you i guess you are right. But if its a hardware problem i dont see how a dev forum would help you. I'm a noob so i wouldnt know ...
Service Center wanted to change all motherboard, and demanded $195(!!)
I found information about the device, called RiffBox($100-$150),I will use it. And in the future I will never go to such foolish service centers

[Q] Tried to convert to Google edition, now phone boots to this grey 'noise' screen

I tried following the instructions here (http://htc-one.wonderhowto.com/how-...with-bootloader-recovery-ota-updates-0148068/)
After being directed to this page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322820)
I followed the directions on changing the Model ID. After changing the model ID and cell ID, I pushed 2 zip files to the phone (PN0714000.zip and the RUU zip). I reached a point where it booted and a green progress bar showed up. It stopped about 3/4 of the way through. And now it boots to this grey 'noise' screen. i can still run commands via adb. I even flashed a recovery img and rebooted. But no matter what i do, the grey screen is what boots up.
I should say the grey screen shows up instantly. As soon as I turn the phone on it shows up as quickly as that bootloader menu.
Any ideas? Is this the product of a wrong img? I did my best at trying to use the correct model numbers and RUU zip file, but I could have used the wrong one.
Any help would be much appreciated. I spent the day on Google and these forums trying to find answers and attempt fixes. NOthing has worked.

Well, your biggest problem is that all those instructions aren't for a Verizon HTC One.
Can you get into fastboot? I would flash a RUU and just not try to do what you were doing. Follow these instructions since you are S-Off.

Also, Step 6 says that it's normal.

Step 6:
When you start your command prompt follow the steps in the picture below. PLEASE BE PATIENT!! After flashing the ENG HBOOT your HTC One will not boot up but you'll just get a gray spotted screen. Your device is not bricked. You can still use adb commands to write the model ID and CID even with a gray screen. WHEN REBOOTING HOLD DOWN POWER BUTTON FOR A FEW SECONDS. You might have to press and hold power button and volume down button when rebooting your phone.
NOTE: When you run the RUU and it says "waiting for bootloader" you will need to restart your phone manually by holding down the power button for a few seconds until it reboots. EACH TIME (does it twice) the RUU says "WAITING FOR BOOTLOADER" you will need to restart the phone manually

Are you in the correct forum first? karn101 is correct this is for the Verizon HTC One. The problem is if you have a Verizon variant we are on a CDMA network. The Google Play Editions are for GSM networks which are AT&T and T-Mobile. I would head over to those forums if that is what your phone is. If not and it is a Verizon variant I would attempt to flash the RUU if you look around through the forums you will be able to find it.

Well I just hit one of the first steps and I can't proceed. "Next have your phone booted into the os / rom of choice doesn’t matter I have done this from both CM and Stock/Rooted" I can't boot into anything. Its just stuck at this static screen. I"m not sure whats behind the static. Though I can use the volume keys and go up/down then hit the power, which causes it to reboot. It seems like it's going up and down a menu, like the bootloader screen.
Enjoy your paperweight sir.
