hi guys and ladies
I have a HTC desire as secondary phone
Sim locked with Orange Swiss
Android version 2.2
Kernel 2.6.32.15-ge2c73db
Software number 2.22.71.4
I would like to root it and instal a custom kernel.
Should I do some more specific stuff since it is Sim-locked?
Or I follow general posts to root the HTC desire? Any good updated step by step guide?
Eventually I'm looking for a stable light ROM with good battery performance.
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks in advance

Only by downgrading then re-rooting
you have to downgrade as shown in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
follow the steps exactly and everything will be just fine
Thanks guys for the reply
Last question : this situation is temperary, isn't it?
I mean a way to root this update is going to come out some time.
if that is the case do you recommend a specific site or thread that I should follow or should I just stick to searching the forum and the web
I really appreciate all the replies and help , thank you.

No, this situation is permanent. You really have to downgrade due to incredibly tight security in HTC devices. Be happy that it is even possible to root devices with these new builds..

Hi, I would like to help my friend install a custom Rom on his desire and need to find out the general steps of what to do??
I have a desire hd and I'm not sure if things are a little different.
For my desire hd I : root, s-off, install custom Rom via cwm.
Is that the same steps as the desire??
My friend is on software number 2.29, can that build be rooted or does it need to downgrade first?? Also I've just read a couple of threads regarding installing a custom Rom and they don't refer to having s-off so was wondering if he needed to be s-off to have custom Rom, id assume he did.
Yeah if someone could help by just saying the steps in which to do it, id look up the rest ,
Thanks in advance to anyone that could help.
P.s its not for me, I'm doing it for a mate who is a complete noob.
Thanks a lot

Can you be more specific please? You want opinions on whether to root, or a guide on how to root?
Anyhow, personally, I will definitely recommend rooting because it enables flashing of Custom ROMs and allowing several great root only apps. It also allows features like overclocking your CPU, getting rid of Sense etc.
But, rooting can only be done if your phone is on Android 2.1. If it is on 2.2.1 it cannot be rooted by any free software yet. (Alpharev X will achieve this, but, it is yet to be released. Link - http://alpharev.nl/x/)
Ya friends i hv s-off nw thanks to alpha revx ...so what will i do next.??

I would advise the ace hack kit found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11321163 Haven't used this in a while and if your already s-off not sure you can use it. Check it out and see.
Hope this helps.

wow mate, bit of patience hey? 80 minutes between 1st and 2nd post!
if you're S-OFF already, the way to root that I know is to downgrade to 1.32 then run the visionary tool: http://android.modaco.com/topic/320722-19-nov-r14-visionary-one-click-root/
check out this thread to read about people who have had a similar experience http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172868

Thank you very much for your help
I used the ACE Kit yesterday to get from v2.3.5 to v2.3.3 and rooted. Simple and straightforward if you follow the instructions and have patience.
