[Q] Samsung Epic 4G touch charging too slowly? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hi guys!
TL;DR at the end.
After posting on here a while back, asking for advice about the Epic 4G touch, I decided to buy the phone.
However, i'm having a problem. One of my biggestt decisions to get this phone was that, as far as I could find online, the phone was equally good at 4G as my old EVO and capable of doing WiFi hotspot without too much trouble.
Last night I got my new phone, set it up, rooted it, installed CWM, and then set myself up with the Blazer ROM, which I really like.
Blazer comes with the "sprint hotspot hack" so the builtin Hotspot app works fine.
Yay!
Except, it uses battery even faster than my EVO Did. with my old EVO, I could hook up the phone to my laptop via USB to charge it and use hotspot at the same time. It would still maintain 100% (roughly) charge even while broadcasting the wireless network, as long as it was plugged in.
This is not the case with 4G touch.. It steadily loses battery while using the HotSpot, even while charging! this is unacceptable as I use my hotspot for hours at a time.
What can I do? Is this an issue with the blazer ROM? Is there something I can do to make it charge faster? ?Use less battery? Would using a 3rd party hotspot app (like WiFi tether) consume less battery?
TL;DR
Hotspot uses too much battery even while plugged in and charging. What do?
-Saph

Is there no way you could you the AC charger do you have to use the USB? Also try placing you phone down screen first and taking the back cover off to allow the access heat to escape.

Have you tried USB tethering instead? Dunno if that is unlocked in blazer or not..

If bringing the adapter with me will make the difference, then I will start doing so
I tried out using the Wireless Tether app instead of the built in sprint hotspot, and I noticed that the Wireless tether app uses less power (so it charges while on USB instead of losing power) and also generates less heat... However it wont let me use any security protocols. If I do so, then the tether has errors and fails.
So it seems like i'ms tuck between a rock and a hard place..

Barnacles, I can't rely on the USB tether. I need it to be WiFi. T be honest, my 4G is my primary internet, even at home, so I need it to be wireless capable for myself and my boyfriend to use at the same time

Also wait a few days for the rom to settle in so you can see the full battery savings effects. also use setcpu or tegrak and Underclock/undervolt during this time and you should be fine

Make sure the power rating is 1A, 5 Watts. Some are 500 or 700 mAh (even though they may be Samsung branded), those are insufficient for our phones.

LOL what kind of boyfriend leeches his internet off his girlfriend's 4G tether setup?
Tell him to get you some legit internet service

Thanks, phatman! i'll make sure i get the proper voltage.
@LordJummy: We live separately, but when we're together we both play games. So I need to have it on WiFi so we both have access. I can't afford to pay another bill on top of what I already pay, and sprint has never *****ed about my tethering, sooo.. im gonna keep using what works.

Usually the output amperage from a computer usb port is .5 amps. My suggestion is get a usb charger (for car or house) that is for the apple ipad. Those are high amperage output chargers rated at 2.1 amps. I used a standard charger while using the phone and noticed that the charger couldn't keep up with the demand for power for charging and using the phone at the same time. I got a charger for an ipad and now it can charge and I can run the phone at the same time no problem. Here's some links.

car charger that can keep up?

Today my phone died mid conversation while driving. Apparently I had left 4g coverage so I was using GPS, talking on bluetooth and searching for a 4g signal. Somehow this killed my phone from ~50% battery to dead in less than 30 minutes. I have two car charges, one is a usb 800ma rated the other registers as AC and is 1000ma. Can any chargers keep up with gps and bluetooth at the same time?
The 1000mah should do it. but it depends on what is going through your lighter socket. I could be wrong. next thing would be to just turn off 4g while driving anyways i dont think it helps with voice but then again i could be wrong.
I have a stock rom and run gps, pandora, and wifi hotspot usually all the time in the car and have a cheapy ipod usb plug that has a usb port not sure what the rating is but never have a problem with my battery dying or loosing juice. nor is my car anything special and is 10 years old
Its to my understanding from reading the various forums that 4G more or less just affects data and has little to do with voice . I would try shutting down 4G and just using the GPS and bluetooth and still see if your loosing power .

I can confirm 4g doesn't help with voice. Many phones can't do data and phone calls simultaneously, but the evo can because it will use the 3g radio for the phone call allowing the wifi radio or the 4g radio to transfer data. Basically, during a phone call, you can do data via 4g, but voice doesn't go through 4g at all. That can be turned off because it won't affect your call.
all of this aside, there is absolutely NO WAY that your phone could die that fast while being hooked up to a charger, even if you are sucking more power than you are gaining... You must of not had it plugged in right or something, because that makes absolutely no sense. i have a cheapy car charger and i use gps, voice and 4G together a fair amount when i'm driving around(chicago and the surrounding suburbs have surprisingly decent 4G coverage!), and have personally never lost power, just charges a lot slower... Either get a new charger, get the socket checked out, or get the battery checked out, cause there is no way that should be happening.

i agree with this
I'll throw a monkey wrench into the statements above. You can deplete the battery while you are plugged in, depends on the charger, if plugged in to a USB port (USB 2.0 standard is only 100mA) the EVO only gets a trickle charge same can happen with a car cigarette lighter, it will depend on the output of the charger. A cheapy charger is likely to put out only a small output. As others have mentioned a 1000mA charger will keep you running, where as a cheap adapter may only put out a 100 to 200 mA. You get what you pay for.

I got one of these Motorola OEM's, and it works perfectly.... Less than $10 shipped for a name brand!
Oh yeah, it's rated at 950mA
it's possible the phone could have overheated and shut itself down. It gets pretty warm when charging the battery. Let alone using the GPS, and bluetooth, and whatever other applications you had running.
I put mine up on the dash to use as a GPS with turn-by-turn navigation and stream pandora over 3G. When calls come in, the music stops, and then after the call is disconnected, the music resumes. I notice on warm days, I need to use the defroster on cold to keep the phone from overheating up there.
Your phone LED will flash orange if it is overheating.

[Q] Tethering Question

Hi,
Why is it, whenever I am either wired tethering, or wireless tethering (plugged in) my phone never ever charges, in fact it seems to be discharging? Is there anyway to fix this?
bump
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I'd say because you're pushing the device hard enough that it is losing power faster than it can charge up. Sucks but it can happen.

If you're over LTE, the phone is drawing more power than it can physically receive from a charger. This is well documented in LTE devices. If you're charging through a computer or a car charger, your phone may even discharge while plugged in and tethering.

MHL to HDMI problem resolved

Since I couldn't find any solution to my problem anywhere, I thought I'd post my solution here in case someone encounters the same or similar problems.
First, the problem: When my Galaxy Nexus is connected to my TV, using the samsung mhl-to-hdmi adapter, it loses connection at times. These problems get worse when the battery is low. It seems like the charger cannot support both the HDMI and the phone at the same time.
Resolution: My TV happens to be located in an area of my appartment with particularly bad reception. It appeared to me as if the disconnects happened whenever the phone was searching for a network. When the phone is in airplane mode the disconnects no longer occur, even if wifi is active. I haven't yet checked if it is enough to just switch off 3G, but it works and I'm very happy with it.
Activate airplane mode in Settings > Wireless & Networks
If you wan't to have wifi, just turn it back on.
I will have to test this theory
I have read that with the MHL adapter it works much much better to have your phone charging at the same time.

A Million thanks to you dude. You made my day. I would have definitely given you one strong hug if you were anywhere near me.
I bought a brand new Samsung MHL and a High Speed HDMI two days back, only to find frequent disconnection and white noise. Happened every few minutes. Tried everything and was so freakin sad that I can't tell. Searched thoughout to find a solution. No go. Neither XDA nor google had the answer.
And then finally stumbled upon this thread.
And its exactly what was happening to my galaxy SII. I was in a place of low reception where 3G strength was bad. Never thought of this to be a problem.
But finally I read, I followed, I implemented and there I am.
Extremely satisfied with my purchase and my SII. It was back up and roaring on the big screen clutter-less now.
Thanks again dude!!!
Just one thing. What do you think is the relation between the HDMI output and network strength?? Is it supposed to happen or is it a fault(H/W or S/W) ?

MHL adapters include a side port for charging your phone. When your phone is displaying itself through HDMI it drains battery faster than this 'HDMI charging'. If your MHL adapter doesn't include this, I suggest buying a new one. $7 on eBay.

I believe that for most (all?) MHL->HDMI adapters, you HAVE to plug it in.
In MHL mode, the phone is set up so that it is able to receive power (charge). The MHL->HDMI adapter needs power to run. Since it can't get power from the nexus (because the nexus is set up to receive power, not provide it), it needs to be plugged in via the side micro-usb port. So far, all the adapters I've seen/heard of are this way.
Hypothetically, I suppose that the MHL->HDMI adapter could be battery-powered or have a different plug to provide power - or it might only power itself and not the phone. I've never seen one like that, though.

I believe you are mistaken. First off, the maximum power capable of being supplied over HDMI is 50mA - well below the charging requirements for the Nexus. Secondly, the device you're connecting the Nexus to (TV/Monitor) is a sink device which does NOT provide power (unless MHL compliant?) to the source (Nexus). Thus, most (all?) MHL adapters provide the option of connecting an external power supply to charge the device.
To the OP, thanks for this info! My friend had issues with his and this could very much be the issue, the low signal is causing too much power draw for him.
Since I live in an area with very strong signal, that would explain why I never saw it.

I wouldn't call the micro-USB portion of a MHL adapter an option, more a requirement.

Ah, yes - good point.
I just got a brand new MHL adapter and cant get it to work at all. Beginning to think I got a DOA one.
I am going to try your solution to see if it helps, but I have good reception in my house.
When I connect mine, with power attached to the adapter, I get nothing at all on my TV, and the phone does nothing either. What could be wrong?

Does your TV support 1280x720 over HDMI?
Awesome! I've tested this last night and didn't get any flickering of image when using my MHL to HDMI. The flickering would happen every 30 min or so sporatically...
FYI- your phone does not get charged through HDMI cable. You need to plug in power to the MHL connector to even use it which charges it but having the screen on at all times causes the battery to slowly drain. I usually just dim my screen down as much as possible to savage what I can. The drain is very minimal ~ 2% per hour with the type of MHL cable I purchased. (Menotek Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter IMPROVED WITH RCP- purchased on Amazon)
I know it's an old thread, but has anyone else tried bumping the CPU minimum up to 700mhz? I am going to do this tonight, airplane mode did work for me but I am currently looking for away to get HULU and Netflix working and I need the data connection.
Thank you so much, it works. Anyway, is there a way to have data connection and mhl at the same time?
I'm having problems connecting mouse through usb on the go.. when I try to connect my phone turns off and then it takes so much time to start?? any suggestions?
Would it matter if you just turned off mobile data or do you need to go airplane mode

Try it for your self, but if you are using any of the newer ROMs with the new DDK1.9, it doesn't support MHL.

[Q] Google Nav - Draining faster than I can charge.

Getting ready for a cross-US trip next month and just noticed something with my GNex vs my 4S.
On my 4S attached to my 1A cig lighter charger from Belkin, I am able to charge the batter while navigating with GPS and screen on. This is using actual navigation, not the built in stuff for iOS5 and earlier.
I simply assumed the same would be true of my GNex but I noticed today that if I am using Google Nav with the screen on and connected to the same 1A Belkin charger, I lose about 1% every 20 minutes or so from my brief testing.
It doesn't appear to be overheating as the charging lights and symbols on the phone continue to show charging and the phone isn't all that hot. It's also not been using for any really long trips yet so it hasn't had a lot of time to get super hot if it's going to.
Just curious if this is common for the GNex while running only GPS with screen on.
I did some searching but the other complaints I found involved people also streaming music while using GPS nav.
People have reported this, and it makes sense if you're on a 1A charger, especially if you have a Verizon model connected to LTE. This is similar to the complaints that people can't charge on a 500mA USB 2.0 port while tethering LTE.
I personally don't notice it draining when I'm listening to music (stored, not streaming) and Navigating, although it's usually on trips of 45min at most and I have a GSM model. My battery seems to just hold or barely charge. I'm not sure of the exact output of my charger though. It's an AT&T branded accessory with a main cable, and a second full-sized USB port.

Yup, normal for the LTE models. It was actually one of the biggest complaints when it was initially released. Turn off LTE while using navigation.

the next nexus needs an IR blaster. think of all the diabolical fun!
I haven't tried it on my Galaxy Nexus but his was certainly the same on my older Nexus S.
Verizon Nexus here and I have no problems in this regard.
I usually stream Pandora while using Google Maps Navigation and have a little speaker plugged into the USB port on the charger and it still charges the phone's battery.
LTE is on as well. Never turn it off.
Using the "MicroUSB Dual Vehicle Power Charger w/USB port" charger from Verizon.
Use Battery Monitor Widget and see if it says "AC" or "USB" when it's charging. You want to see AC or it won't be pulling enough juice. If you see USB, try a different cable. You can also force fast charging with the proper kernel. I use Franco, which has an option for it. That alone didn't seem to help, but I bought the Fast Charge app, which seemed to do the trick.
I just went through this myself on a 2 week motorcycle trip. I used a 3rd party GPS app the entire time, screen on, and streaming music. I had LTE on and I believe as long as my screen was set at around 65% or less I never had an issue.
So, yes it can be done. You just need to figure out the right setup. I did some research before my trip and from what I read, not all USB cables are the same. On my bike I had a low-profile dual USB charger.
90% is the USB cable.
It happens on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 with the default Samsung USB charger, when I connect it to my laptop. Then, if I browse on Internet with the tablet, my battery drains faster than charge, even if connected to the laptop with the USB.
The key is to discover if there is the USB or calbe problem with A output.

Sure enough, it was going to USB on the car charger. I unplugged the phone and went in the Franco Kernal Config and enabled USB Fast Charge. Plugged it back in and it recognized as AC and true enough, it charged my phone while using Nav so YAY!
Only problem I'm having is that on any reboot, even though it is still checked in the Franco Config, I have to uncheck USB Fast Charge and recheck it before plugging it into the charger for it to not go back to USB.

Not sure why it's needed, but after I bought this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.incredicontrol.fastchargewidget
I only needed to toggle the widget to fast once, and then my problems went away. Worth a few pennies prior to the trip...
I boggles the mind why this is set up this way in stock form..
why??
BTW to the OP, I just switched from a 4S, also had a 1amp charger that did the same as yours, that same charger on the Nexus won't charge the battery with GSM model. It drains about 3-5 % over around an hour commute, more if the sun is directly on it and it gets hot.
Still, why does it seem to force a .5 amp charge when the capability is there for more??
This is annoying that you have to grab up a custom kernel to do this. With JB I'm quite happy with the way the phone is stock and non-rooted but I guess I'm going to have to root and throw on a custom kernel after all.
If you like to solder cables, you can mod your car charger to register as a AC charger.
Give me a second, I'll find the thread.

Battery drain issue with MHL

I'm getting rapid battery drain issues while using MHL adapter. I'm still trouble shooting, but have to experiment more. In the mean time, I was thinking maybe someone may have some suggestions.
I just transition from the HTV Evo 4G. Great phone, but it's showing its age. I have a job with a lot of dead time. With the Evo, and Cyangenmod, I would mirror the phone onto a 16" HDTV and watch Netflix, Hulu, NFL, Crackle, Plex, play games and so forth. I would also WiFi tether so I could use my tablet to do email, web browser, IM and so forth. I had the phone over clocked and used the performance gov. If had the phone connect to a charger, it would actually charge, albeit slowly back up to a fully charge This is with the screen that new shut off while pausing a media, but set to the lowest brightness.
The GN2, nowhere near the performance. If I WiFi tether and stream some media and mirror to the TV via the MHL adapter, I loose around 20% battery.per hour. I have power save on. I use my tablets power adapter with outputs 2.1mah instead of the 1 like the one that comes with GN2. I still have the screen set to lowest brightness.
From the settings menu for battery, the screen takes up the most juice. This is expected. But I also streamed content on phone while charging and it did build up a charge, albeit very slow.
I'm thinking it may be the MHL adapter itselt. I have the have USB charger connected to work. It's possible the phone doesn't put out enough power to work the MHL adapter. I'm not certain, but it's possible the MHL adapter is only doing a trickle charge. I had it plugged in, but phone screen off, and looks like it draining the battery. I want to run a longer test to confirm.
I purchase a cheap MHL from monoprice. I had to get the 11pin to 5pin adapter to use it. I'm not sure it is the MHL or the adapter that may cause issues.
In the mean time, I changed the kernals to Persus. Hoping to get better performance, or higher charging capablities. It's improved slightly, maybe 18% drain per hour. I'm just using CPU Mater, free version. I upped the CPU to 1.8ghz, but the free version does include anything for the battery. I don't really want to spend the $3 on SetCPU because I don't know if there gov has a lot towards the battery charging mods.
Any ideas or suggestions?

A. you are wrong, the charger that comes with our phone is 2 amps.
B. make sure you use the cable that came with the phone as it is rated for 2 amps, other cables will have too much resistance
C. it is normal for the mhl adapter to eat through your battery, maybe not as much as you are saying, but this phone uses the 11 pin mhl adapter which allows for FULL hd unlike older mhls/microhdmi ports so it is bound to murder your battery
D. I don't recommend you wirelessly tethering at the same time, my phone will eat through my battery like crazy with the screen turned off while tethering to play online games... this might be the root of your problem

I think you're right on the cable. I tried it at home, using the charger and cable that came with the phone. Did an hour of Netflix, WiFi tethered the tablet. Battery drain...1%
I'll guess I need to get new USB cables since I like to keep extras in various locations, LOL.
Also, I miss read the chrager. I shouldn't read when I'm too tired. The good news, my tablets 2.1A charger should be only a very low risk of too much power. I was concerned with it, when I thought the charger was 1A
I realize what I'm doing is power drain, but it should be doable is the phone is on a charger. I'm not necessarily expecting it to charge back up, but I figure in the six to seven hours, a reasonable drain on the charger should be maybe 30%. This is only an assumption since I don't know how much the screen drains the battery.

there is no risk of overcharging from amperage, the phone will take what it wants and not use the rest... you could have a 500 amp charger yet our phone would only use the 2 amps it's rated for. The problem comes from voltage if you have to much voltage then you overcharge.
you also fail to realize that the phone takes a lot of juice to convert it's image into a standard hdmi signal, it's the difference between you talking to yourself and you trying to make someone else understand you... the processor has to act as a graphics card, a sound card and its usual processing needs... the epic 4g touch ate just as much power per hour while on mhl yet it was only outputting 16:9 480p
as for getting more cables be careful and ensure they can handle the 2 amp drop

Well, it seemed the biggest culprit was not the cable, but the charger. I actually brought the Samsung charger to work. I was only getting around 2% to 5% battery drain per hour. It was really low.
Unfortunately my ignorence on electricity is showing. I'm not seeing why such a dramatic difference between the Samsung and ASUS (TF700T tablet) chargers. Their readings are similar but not exact:
ASUS: Input: 100-240V 50/60Hz 0.5A, Output: 5V==2A or 15V==1.2A
Samsung: Input 100-240V 50/60Hz 0.35A, Output 5V ==2.0A
As for cables, I'm not sure where I can go to find good USB cables that work as well or better than the one that came with the phone. Usually I just go to monoprice, but that's where I got my other cables.
BlackBerry cables r usually more beefy than others since they are rated for data transfer. whenever flashing through Odin that's what I use never had a problem. assuming it's the same for charging. they usually only run like 5 bucks too

they might be beefy, but still have ****ty materials. it all depends on the impedance of the cable... if you have a multimeter check the resistance on the cables and compare them to the stock
