I'm getting rapid battery drain issues while using MHL adapter. I'm still trouble shooting, but have to experiment more. In the mean time, I was thinking maybe someone may have some suggestions.
I just transition from the HTV Evo 4G. Great phone, but it's showing its age. I have a job with a lot of dead time. With the Evo, and Cyangenmod, I would mirror the phone onto a 16" HDTV and watch Netflix, Hulu, NFL, Crackle, Plex, play games and so forth. I would also WiFi tether so I could use my tablet to do email, web browser, IM and so forth. I had the phone over clocked and used the performance gov. If had the phone connect to a charger, it would actually charge, albeit slowly back up to a fully charge This is with the screen that new shut off while pausing a media, but set to the lowest brightness.
The GN2, nowhere near the performance. If I WiFi tether and stream some media and mirror to the TV via the MHL adapter, I loose around 20% battery.per hour. I have power save on. I use my tablets power adapter with outputs 2.1mah instead of the 1 like the one that comes with GN2. I still have the screen set to lowest brightness.
From the settings menu for battery, the screen takes up the most juice. This is expected. But I also streamed content on phone while charging and it did build up a charge, albeit very slow.
I'm thinking it may be the MHL adapter itselt. I have the have USB charger connected to work. It's possible the phone doesn't put out enough power to work the MHL adapter. I'm not certain, but it's possible the MHL adapter is only doing a trickle charge. I had it plugged in, but phone screen off, and looks like it draining the battery. I want to run a longer test to confirm.
I purchase a cheap MHL from monoprice. I had to get the 11pin to 5pin adapter to use it. I'm not sure it is the MHL or the adapter that may cause issues.
In the mean time, I changed the kernals to Persus. Hoping to get better performance, or higher charging capablities. It's improved slightly, maybe 18% drain per hour. I'm just using CPU Mater, free version. I upped the CPU to 1.8ghz, but the free version does include anything for the battery. I don't really want to spend the $3 on SetCPU because I don't know if there gov has a lot towards the battery charging mods.
Any ideas or suggestions?

A. you are wrong, the charger that comes with our phone is 2 amps.
B. make sure you use the cable that came with the phone as it is rated for 2 amps, other cables will have too much resistance
C. it is normal for the mhl adapter to eat through your battery, maybe not as much as you are saying, but this phone uses the 11 pin mhl adapter which allows for FULL hd unlike older mhls/microhdmi ports so it is bound to murder your battery
D. I don't recommend you wirelessly tethering at the same time, my phone will eat through my battery like crazy with the screen turned off while tethering to play online games... this might be the root of your problem

I think you're right on the cable. I tried it at home, using the charger and cable that came with the phone. Did an hour of Netflix, WiFi tethered the tablet. Battery drain...1%
I'll guess I need to get new USB cables since I like to keep extras in various locations, LOL.
Also, I miss read the chrager. I shouldn't read when I'm too tired. The good news, my tablets 2.1A charger should be only a very low risk of too much power. I was concerned with it, when I thought the charger was 1A
I realize what I'm doing is power drain, but it should be doable is the phone is on a charger. I'm not necessarily expecting it to charge back up, but I figure in the six to seven hours, a reasonable drain on the charger should be maybe 30%. This is only an assumption since I don't know how much the screen drains the battery.

there is no risk of overcharging from amperage, the phone will take what it wants and not use the rest... you could have a 500 amp charger yet our phone would only use the 2 amps it's rated for. The problem comes from voltage if you have to much voltage then you overcharge.
you also fail to realize that the phone takes a lot of juice to convert it's image into a standard hdmi signal, it's the difference between you talking to yourself and you trying to make someone else understand you... the processor has to act as a graphics card, a sound card and its usual processing needs... the epic 4g touch ate just as much power per hour while on mhl yet it was only outputting 16:9 480p
as for getting more cables be careful and ensure they can handle the 2 amp drop

Well, it seemed the biggest culprit was not the cable, but the charger. I actually brought the Samsung charger to work. I was only getting around 2% to 5% battery drain per hour. It was really low.
Unfortunately my ignorence on electricity is showing. I'm not seeing why such a dramatic difference between the Samsung and ASUS (TF700T tablet) chargers. Their readings are similar but not exact:
ASUS: Input: 100-240V 50/60Hz 0.5A, Output: 5V==2A or 15V==1.2A
Samsung: Input 100-240V 50/60Hz 0.35A, Output 5V ==2.0A
As for cables, I'm not sure where I can go to find good USB cables that work as well or better than the one that came with the phone. Usually I just go to monoprice, but that's where I got my other cables.
BlackBerry cables r usually more beefy than others since they are rated for data transfer. whenever flashing through Odin that's what I use never had a problem. assuming it's the same for charging. they usually only run like 5 bucks too

they might be beefy, but still have ****ty materials. it all depends on the impedance of the cable... if you have a multimeter check the resistance on the cables and compare them to the stock

Hi guys,
I have a simple MHL connector (ie splits into power & hdmi), to hookup the phone to the big screen. It looks pretty decent, but even when connected to mains, (which it must have otherwise hdmi doesnt work), it loses charge while playing video.
I have tried several players (dice / mx).. all play well, but phone cant keep up with charging & playing at same time..
Am doing some tests to see how bad it draws. When I go into system details, phone shows it is charging via mains.. but it appears it cant put out enough current to charge and play..
Would make a LOT of sense to me that the LCD screen (which draws about 70% of the power) actually switched off during playback via HDMI.
anyone know if this is possible or if they can charge & play a video at the same time..
I seem to be losing about 1% battery every 2 mins.
Can someone else test so i can know if It is just a dodgy MHL I have or if they are all like this. Have tried both SD & HD video.. all quite similar results.
be aware
Use the original charger or one with 5v 1a otherwise your phone won't get enough power for example I know a BlackBerry charger has a lower output

This was with the original charger unfortunately.
This is the same issue why I wrote that One X is unusable for in-car navigation. Basicaly what happens when under load (navigation, playing a movie, playing a game) is that battery gets into "Overheat" state (you can see this in OS Monitor for example) and stops charging.
My test for car navigation shows that power is drained by 25%/hour when plugged in and Sygic is running. Battery is in overheat state most of the time. This happens at about 50 deg.C if I remember correctly - this looks a little low so maybe they'll tweak it a little, but it doesn't solve the underlying problem really, just delays it...
So I blame crappy heatsink construction or overral internal design, this should not happen under any circumstances (and my iPhone is a marvellous example that it can be done - it is able to navigate and charge at the same time, and gets into overheat only when car ventilation is turned off and sun is shining on its' black body - my One X is white and overheats no matter what I do).
This will sooner or later be the reason why people will start returning their phones en masse...
Get 2 amps charger from eBay, see if it helps. I do have one, but only use it when I really need a quick charge in very shor time. Not advised to use as primary charger, but for powering both: phone and MHL at the same time, it might just do the trick.

I tried this, doesn't work. The problem is not insufficient current, it's overheating.

2a won't work as the phone is limited to 1a
If the battery temp is 48 or over it goes in to overheat state green and red notification.
If you are rooted you could disable two cores see if that helps.

This same issue came up in the Nexus forums a while back. Evidently, AC charging requires that the USB data lines to be either shorted or have a resistor across them (forget which one). Since MHL is using those USB data lines for video, they cannot be used to signal AC charging capability, so you're stuck with the max USB draw of 500ma. That's way less than the amount of juice you're using, so you end up running the battery down. You should be able to confirm that by noting the charging mode displayed while using MHL.

So i got an MHL cable to connect my 1X to my tv to play snes games with a bluetooth controller
It works fine, plus it looks great... BUT!
The phone says it's charging.. little red light, battery info says charging, but it looses charge as i use it.
Just finished playing a snes emulator for 30 mins. I had the phone in airplane mode, plus the screen brightness on the lowest setting.
After 30 mins it went from 85% to 72%!! plus it was really warn/hot.
Is this normal? Is it because the screen is still on on the 1X?
Does the media link thingy work better? does the screen turn off on the phone when using that?
Anyone else got an MHL cable? does your phone loose charge while using it?
Under heavy use, charging in USB mode (500mA limit) will usually still see the battery level decrease. Are you putting the auxiliary charger off a USB out from your TV/console? If so this will be the case.
I have only given my MHL adapter a quick try. Not really used it in anger yet. Can't say for sure what would happen if you used a wall charger instead of a USB one. No doubt the charge wouldn't drop, but would want to keep a very close eye on the temperature!
Are you rooted?
i think the mhl adapters (mine at least) has a maximum output, to the phone, of 500ma.
This means even if you plugin a wall charger @ 1A, then it will still only provide the phone 500ma of power max.
The rest of the power goes to actually powering the cable itself, in order to get the picture on the tv.
the reason it drains, is because the consumption of the screen/cpu is greater than the 500ma of power that the mhl adapter is providing.
Thanks for the reply.
My phone is not rooted. It's just a standard out of the box 1X.
Also, when using the MHL cable the phone was plugged into the mains charger & was still loosing charge! plus it was very warm..
Maybe i'll try to find some info about those charging dock/cradle things with the HDMI out. Maybe that be better???

Ah, ok.. that makes sense really.
I did think maybe there was more power being used than coming in... shame you can't turn the screen off on the 1X.
I think you have already done the sensible thing of trying airplane mode and min screen brightness. If it still heats up doing that on USB charging, then it's unlikely a different dock/adapter would see a reduction in drain & heat. I'd save your money there.
I only asked about root in case you could try Core Control to reduce heating, but never mind there.
Only thing I found that kept my phone cool when charging under heavy use (before I rooted it), was making sure I took the case off and I rest it on a granite drinks coaster I have! Draws the heat out of the phone very efficiently!
Using an MHL setup I noticed a huge drop in power. Since the "Charge In" port doesn't seem to be charging my phone, I only get ~3-5 hours of MHL before my battery is completely dead. I was wondering if I could buy a Mophie/iBlason case along with the MHL adapter in order to get more hours out of my phone.
Probably an obvious answer, but I wasn't sure if having 2 inline usb ports would affect much.
Have you tried a different charging adapters? Would one with a higher output help?
I had a sensation (its been a while since I used MHL) and it would stay at the same battery level but not charge when I was using MHL. I know the one has issues where it doesn't charge very fast, so when doing things like GPS navigation with the brightness way up or anything else that is really taxing on the processor and stuff it will drain the battery when it's plugged in. I had heard they were going to address this with the 4.3 update, so it might be worth waiting to see if that helps at all before you drop almost 100 bucks on a battery case that may or may not work.
Rooted with 4.3 GE atm, with the same results. Even have the brightness set to 0 (mhl output is normal) and it still drains battery, albeit much slower now. I'm using the stock charger for the HTC One. The main problem I've heard however is that regardless of charging adapter the phone will still read MHL input as USB Power and will only take 500mA max.
I'll still grab a 2A charger though, just in case. Thanks for the help though.
Yeah, I kinda figured it had to do with HTC's slow charging stuff. Maybe the update will help you whenever it comes.
This weekend I manged to leave my included Note III Micro USB B 3.0 charger at a friends. I didn't think it was a big deal because I knew I had plenty of micro USB 2.0 Cables I could use in the meantime as they are supposedly backwards compatible.
I was home watching football for most of the day yesterday. The phone charged all day yesterday but I don't remember it ever getting as high as 45%. I didn't get worried until last night when I looked closely and realized the percentage was declining as I used and charged it.
When I went to sleep at about 12:30am I was at 9%. My WiFi and 4Glte were both off and I wok up at 5:30 am to find my phone at 63% only after 5 hours. This is the same charger I used with my Samsung Galaxy S3 just over a week ago til I got this. Why isn't it charging. I'm afraid I'm harming my battery somehow. That's why I'm writing this at 5:45 am instead of sleeping. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
P.S. In the 10 minutes it's taken me to write out this thread my battery has declined to 62. (Still on charger)

I had a usb2.0 cable plugged in in my car and I went skiing and streamed music and did the same while plugged in on the way home. I don't know if the cable just slowed battery usage or not but it was plugged in for 2 hours on the way home and I still lost like 5% while plugged in. I bought a USB3.0 cable off Amazon and it works well in my car, not as fast as plugged in to the wall charger but much better than 2.0

I understand that 3.0 will be faster but this is horrendous. It's now 8 hours since I plugged it in and I'm at 74%. And it's plugged in to a wall adapter not a computer or car. Haven't even had this phone for two weeks. Samsung you're killing me here.

It's not, at least, not from a wall charger that follows the specs. USB3 will charge faster from a computer with the drivers set up properly, but the stock wall plug is 2A (max), all the time. If you get better charging from a USB3 cable, your USB2 cable is probably using really thin wires or just is wearing out.
Some generic chargers are all over the place. Some don't short the data lines so the phone doesn't know if it should be able to fast-charge. Some don't actually put out the current they are rated for.
IF you use the charger the phone came with, and a GOOD USB2/3 cable, it will charge properly. If its not, you have something wrong in your setup. I use the charger that came with the N3 (and the N2), and a Nook or a Monoprice.com USB2 cable. Nice fast charging. I have never used the USB3 cable as I prefer to be able to charge other devices from the same cable and I don't own any USB3 computers.
I also get good charge speed from an older HTC 1A charger. Not as fast, but faster than I expected to get. Note that's a charger that came with a G2 and G2x, not some ebay crap. That's not to say that generic ebay chargers can't be good chargers, just that many of them aren't. If in doubt, use all OEM stuff, at least for testing.
What's probably happening for most people having slow charging on older and/or generic charging setups is one of these...
1) The charger doesn't short the data pins so the phone thinks it's connected to a computer USB and limits charge current to 500mA.
2) The charger doesn't output what the writing on the side claims, and the phone detects this, so it limits itself to charging as best it can.
3) The USB cable uses small, cheap wires and creates too much voltage drop, causing the phone to limit its charge rate.
4) Connector wear is causing voltage drops due to a bad connection. Try a new cable. Not a different cable, a NEW cable.
5) Your Note3 is defective and needs to be replaced. This isn't real likely, but damage to the USB port could cause it.
The Note wants a lot more current than older devices. It also has a system to detect issues that older phones didn't have. I think the first I saw with it was the N2. The phone detects voltage fluctuations under load and adjusts its current draw to keep the voltage as steady as it can. This makes the device more picky about having a good charger and cable. That can be a pain, but it also prevents overloading the charger, which could be something expensive like a computer, which prevents damage. Note that this doesn't harm the battery, it just won't charge as fast as you might like. At 500mA, it's actually possible for the phone to use more than that, so your charge will go down while plugged in. That's not going to hurt anything, it's just how it is.
For the OP: Try a decent wall charger. If you don't have anything better, you'll have to turn the Note OFF while charging. That should at least get your battery charged overnight. If it's a long cable, try a shorter one, that can make a difference. Or try to find a thicker cable, but that's not always a guarantee the wires inside are any thicker.
So I'm struggling to figure out a good car charging setup. I commute an hour each way to work and in the winter I can put quite a load on my phone between listening to a locally stored audio book over BT, and running a nav/traffic app (waze) that sucks data and GPS.
That said I've tested all different combos including running no apps and just letting the phone charge. I can NOT seem to get this thing to charge at higher range than standard USB ~500mah. I've tried a 2.1A charger and a 6A charger....yes I know power doesn't "push" but wanted try something with some higher amperage. I've tried multiple cables including stock. I tested several cables on the stock wall charger and all but one I had pulled close to 1.8A rating, at the very least they all showed around 1000mAh charge rate.
I ordered the "Kopi cable" a 20awg cable touted to support 2A charging. Plugged it in to my mpow 6A charger and through the hour of charging today still never broke the variable range of 500mAh. I am using the Battery Monitor Widget app for the readings. Weather it is accurate or not nothing I've tried with different cables seems to get me the charging rate I need/want.
Whenever I check the charging status in android settings it pretty much always says AC charging mode. One of the cables I had I tried shorting the data pins and it made no difference.
I don't know if it matters but I have the sprint variant.
Any suggestions?
Okay so no one is here with me...
The company of the current charger I'm using sent me another one for free but I'm still convinced the phone is charging to its full potential. Some thoughts/questions:
1. Does the G3 charge at different rates *up to* the 1.8 amps it can accept? I've read phones will slow down when they top off but are there other variances at play?
2. Is there an app known to be accurate for monitoring the charge rate, specifically ma/a being drawn while charging? -I know there are a lot of generic answers to this and apps that claim to do this but I am looking for specific compatibility with the G3. The last app I used was battery monitor widget. If that app is accurate, even with a cable(Kopi cable) rated for 2 amps and using a 6 amp car charger (mpow) I never see more than ~500-600mA and often less.
3. Could heat play a factor in charge rate? On bad weather days I am running a navigation app and streaming an audiobook over bluetooth...wifi radio off. My phone is in an otterbox case and has felt *somewhat* warm after my hour commute running nav and BT audio, screen on the whole way. **On otherwise decent days I am just streaming BT audiobook, no nav, screen off. Phone has never felt warm that way but charge rate doesn't seem to improve.
I'm willing to try a different charger if it will help, but I want to know the phone will pull the full amount that it can. OR, I just need some education on how this device charges. I understand that we don't benefit from the fast charge capability that I read our hardware has.
Thanks to anyone willing to take the time to reply.
