I've been rooted for a long time now, but in the last 4 months have not been following xda as closely as usual.
I am running Synergy RLS1 with custom themes and additions (have flashed god mode in the past but didn't work very well).
I've flashed other rom's since then and the front camera still doesn't work. Is this because of some kernel or something?
Do I need to unroot and go to sprint? if this is the case, how do I do that (what pc36img do I need to download)? I have s-off right now with hboot 76.something.. I have all the new radios as well...
I am looking to get 1) my front camera working and 2) speed up my phone, synergy seems to be slow, my camera takes so long to load...
lastly, any roms out there use the volume button(s) to take pictures?
TIA!
did you make a nandroid of your stock rom before flashing any other roms? if so, try restoring to that, then partition your sd card. make sure you move the files you want to keep to your computer first or you will lose them.
if going to stock doesn't fix the front camera, try a different kernel. And partitioning the sd card would help speed up your sense roms.
sorry if i'm making myself look dumb, just trying to help... lol

I did not make a nandroid directly after rooting, just flashed a rom right away (I was a n00b at the time)... sd card is already partitioned..

and if the different kernel or going to stock doesn't work then it is probably a hardware problem and you will have to unroot and take it to sprint if you want it fixed
well there are plenty of stock "barebones" roms, from 4.54 to 4.67 and before, download and flash one of them. do you know if you were 4.54 when you flashed the rom?

Hey guys I have been reading about this for the last 3 hours or so and I just want to make sure I have everything figured out before I start this practice. Please check over what I have lined up and let me know if you have any recommendations.
Phone Info:
HBoot 2.10
Android 2.2
Baseband 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel 2.6.32.17
Software 3.70.651.1

I read this article first:

From there I decided that Universal Auto Root was the best choice for me. Is this correct?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
I am currently downloading the RUU and AutoRoot v2.0 as suggested by the instructions on the thread above. The part that is tripping me up is what to do about a ROM. From what I can tell the AutoRoot puts on the Sprint Lovers ROM. I have a fair amount of experience with ADW and LP so I'm not set on using the Sense UI. However if I do use Sense I think I would like to use this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=883026 It seems to be Sense minus the bull****. I don't know how to use AutoRoot with a different ROM. If anyone could help me there that would be amazing!
Also, if anyone recommends rooting a different way or using a different ROM please let me know or if someone can link me to go instructions about flashing ROMs etc.
Thank you and I apologize for asking something that has probably already been asked. I am just trying to get the most updated responses to ensure this goes well.
Just go to www.unrevoked.com and chose your phone. Download the reflash file and the usb driver. Follow the instructions of how to install rhe usb driver. Run the reflash file and it will do the rest. Good hunting.....

So do the unrevoked3 and then the unrevoked forever? Do I need to remove HTC Sync or anything?
Yes. Make sure that HTC sync is not installed!!! and just used unrevoke forever and have HBOOT drivers installed Prier to rooting. GOOD LUCK
How do I get the HBOOT drivers installed? So nothing to do with unrevoked3? Should I format my SD card beforehand just to be safe as well? Sorry for so many questions.
Here you go. fallow the instructions.

Ok well I never moved the unrevoked-forever.zip to my SD Card. Was I supposed to? Unrevoked3 flash tool or whatever ran and now my phone reads S-Off which is the goal. Now what do I do? Should I do the backups suggested here (RSA keys and nandroid)? Should I try to flash a ROM? Any suggested ROMs? How do I go about flashing a ROM? Move it to SD Card and go into recovery but then what?
Don't put unrevoke on your sd card. You have to do it on your PC. PLEASE MAKE A NANDROID!!! I CAN STRESS THAT ENOUGH!!! As far as Rom's try Myn's, is the best Rom right now.

If you have S-OFF you are rooted, now you just need to decide if you want to use a custom ROM or keep the stock one.
i'm not sure you absolutely get rooting. once you are rooted, you can SWITCH roms easily and safely. but, in order to do this, you need to install a custom recovery and a rooted rom. in the earlier days, devs would compile rooted roms from scratch, but sprint lovers is just a rooted rom with minor improvements. just root and then change roms.
Alright I rooted it successfully, flashed a ROM successfully, and then tried it out. Now I would like to try another one. I put the new ROM on the SDCard and now I am wondering what I have to wipe in clockwork recovery. I went into recovery and I have wiped cache partition, wiped data/factory reset, and wiped dalvik cache. Now do I just go ahead and "install zip from sdcard"?
Yes, going from ROM to ROM wipe Data, Cache and Dalvik and flash as normal. Should be good.
Always make backups. I advise you to change your Recovery to Amon Ra's. This will allow you to make backups of your "RSA Keys." This is important for 4G / WiMax.
Once you've changed recoveries, should you even choose to (don't HAVE to), make a backup with that one. Backups from Clockwork will not work with Amon's recovery, from what I've heard. Maybe there is a way from last I heard, but not sure. So when that's done, you can put those clockwork backups on your computer or delete them. Only after making sure you're sitting fine.
Either way, establish backups (I have a stock rooted backup, confirmed working CURRENT ROM as well as taking one before doing something drastic. JIC ) and then start flashing. Try to enjoy yourself.
edit: toss those backups somewhere safe IE computer / ext hdd etc

Hey guy also a bit of a noob here when it comes to the Evo, I rooted my incredible and it worked fine but I am worried a bit more about this phone cause its a work phone. First I was wondering does 4g work with any of the custom roms? I see that Cryogen just came out with an asop rom that seems to work with 4g but I am wondering do the sense based roms work with 4g? Also I see something about wimax keys what are they and what happens if I lose them.

4g works with all ota-based roms (minus the serious exeptions of course). rsa keys are the acutal keys that say "this phone is authorized to use the sprint 4g network". they are matched with hardware, so if you lose them, you cant ever get them back. even sprint cant. the easiest way to prevent this is to not use clockworkmod (i think its safe now) and to back up your keys. niether of these are very hard.
Ok thanks so I just use unrevoked to root the phone and then do a first time nandroid backup and I should be good to go? Then I can do S-off if I want?
Also how hard right now is it to put the phone back to stock if something strange should happen? Want to make sure I get to use my 7 buck a month insurance if I have something go wrong with the phone.
I haven't found any solution with this. About 3 or 4 weeks ago my Evo went crazy so I rebooted and was missing many apps. I did a nand to another sense rom and every time I tried to install an app (either download or from sd card) it would reboot. The odd thing is, it only does it with sense roms. I can use CM 6 or 7 fine and install whatever I want. I was originally one Myn's rls5, I also tried the Fresh roms. I have non clue what's causing this, tried googling and all said clear the market cache or try an older market, which I've done both. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
tricky one. have you tried flashing a stock sense rom, and seeing how things work for you there?
Don't use a backup. Flash a sense ROM and install everything manually.

I can't install anything. period. as soon as I try to install any apk from my sd card or anything from the market that doesn't come installed in the rom, as soon as it "finishes" the installation part it will reboot, but not a full reboot, it will go out to the boot screen (but not all the way to the htc screen).
Since going from AOSP to Sense what was your procedure for flashing? Just want to make sure your starting with a clean slate.
- What steps to you take?
- Full wipe? Data, cache, sd-ext?
- SD format?
The more info you can give the better and maybe we can help you track it down.
Ive done the standard full wipe, data, cache, dalvik. I do that everytime between roms. Not sure what the ext does and in haven't formatted my sd card since then

Update - I flashed the stock rooted 3.70 and was able to install. This was after formatting my sd card. Then tried to flash Myn's rls5 again and had the same problems as before. Only difference is with the 3.70 I forgot the flash the radios, but still had a fine signal. I flashed the radio updates with Myn's. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.
At this point all I can think of doing is unrooting your device and getting it completely back to stock, then try re-rooting and make a nandroid of your rooted, stock sense rom.
Maybe you can root through a different methods than what you did originally.
After that, try another sense rom, make sure the md5 checks out too.

What recovery are you using and what version? I thought there were known issues with ClockWork 3.x.x.x version of recovery not wiping cache correctly? If you are using ClockWork you might want to try switching to Amon_RA 2.2.1. to see what happens. There is also a zip floating around (which I have attached) that can be used to wipe everything, you may want to give that a shot then reinstall the ROM. I have not used this zip, so use it at your own risk as I cannot guarantee the results. I have read about others using this and it working just fine.
So, yesterday, I decided to finally jump into the abyss and try to root my Evo. Luckily, everything went completely smooth the first time (never had that happen with any other device). I was actually surprised how easy this root was.
Anyway...my question is, if I decide to flash another ROM on my phone, or rather, in 10 minutes WHEN I flash another ROM onto my phone, if I decide I don't like it, how do I reflash my original NANDROID backup back onto the phone?
I was able to navigate on my SD to where the backup was saved, but shouldn't it be a ZIP file or something? I only have individual backup files.
Also, sorry for the noob question.
Thanks in advance for your help
You go into recovery to do a nandroid restore. Its not something you flash. There is an option for backups and restore. You just run those. I like to do a full wipe before a restore though, just in case. Oh, and keep your backups in the original folder, thats where recovery will get them from
I appreciate the quick response! Thanks
No prob, hope it helped
It definitely helped to get back to the stock ROM, but now it appears as though no other ROMs are working for me. I've tried MIUI and MikFroyo, and they both get stuck in boot loops. There's something I'm apparently not doing right. Hmmm.

Are you updated to the latest Radio and pri? You have to check what version you have and what version you need to flash the rom you want to use. That is most likely the problem. I know older kernels do not like the new radio or pri. You probably have to update them and you should be fine.
help my g2 is stuck at the htc screen. i perm rooted it with s off and tried to overclock it. i went into clockwork mod recovery and installed the zip files g2 fast? now when i turn it on it goesd to htc screen and then it reboots at htc screen and reeats.
so you flashed a kernel? Was that kernel compatible with whatever rom you are using? Did you take a nandroid backup before hand?
no i didnt backup, i thought i did but apparently i didint.
He's right, that kernel is not compatible with the stock ROM. The best thing to do now is to take out the sd card and put it in a card reader. You just need to download a custom ROM to it so you can flash it. I think if you try to do a factory reset your phone will lose root, but I could be wrong. If you want to return to a stock ROM, search the forums. There are stock ROMs that have been "rooted" so to say. This may have been a blessing in disguise because custom ROMs blow away stock!
ok and how would i do this? i did a factory reset and everything. i think its rooted cause it has the clockwork mod recovery. should i try returning it?

yes and i dont have a card reader but i can mount the sd card to the computer.
You don't even have to do that. All you have to do is boot into recovery. Mount the SD card and copy over a kernel that is compatible with the stock rom. Then flash the new kernel and you're all set. I'm sure the stock kernel is floating around here some where.

You do it the same way you did the g2 fast kernel.
install the zip? where do i find the stock rom or whatever?
Well you're going to have to use the search button for that one. Check the G2 sticky thread. You need either a stock kernel or stock rom compatible kernel. You could also skip this whole endeavor and just flash the latest CM7 rom from recovery. If you do flash a new rom then it is highly recommended to do a data wipe meaning anything you had done on the phone will be cleared.
found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836042
im installing it at the moment i type. we'll see what happens.
it worked! thanks alot guys. i just wish i didnt do the factory reset. also would the phone still be rooted?
Yes, and if/when you decide to flash a custom rom, find out if it has an oc kernel included. CM roms are using pershoots 1.5Ghz UV kernels currently. If you want to use G2fast, you will need to flash that kernel after the rom, and slowly clock up to see how far you can run stable. I advise paying for SetCPU to monitor your OC as well.
HTC Vision 1.8 OC, CM7 RC1==HAPPY!!

What is the procedure for going from TWizz to AOSP and vise versa? Isn't there an internal SDCard issue going back to TW from AOSP? Can I not just do an Nandroid from TWRP back to my TWizz ROM?

Thats what I did. The only problem I had with aosp was the internal sd, but I went back to touchwiz via nandroid and everything seems to be working fine. I only tried aisp for about a day and then went back. Hopefully I helped.
Somewhere, in some thread (at work, can't find it for you ATM) there is a flashable zip to fix the internal partitioning (?) issue going from 4.1 to 4.2... Hold on....

Also, is CWM required for some reason? Can I still just use TWRP? Or is there some scripting issues or something? All the AOSP threads say use/flash CWM. Maybe they are just saying CWM as in a generic term for recovery?

Installed AOSP Carbon. Let all my apps restore from Google. Right from the get go I could tell it was really fast, But I'm already going back to my TW ROM. I just couldn't be away from all of Sammy's add-ons.
I used the latest TWRP and flashed the AOSP + GApps with no problems. It booted fine. Played with it for a bit. Like I said let all my apps download again and played with some of the AOSP settings and ran a few benchmarks.
Process I used to go back to TW ROM.
Rebooted to TWRP
Wiped Cache/Delvik
Factory Reset
Wiped System
Formatted Data
Rebooted Recovery
Restored TWizz Backup
Flashed restore-sdcard-after-downgrade.zip
Wiped Cache/Delvik
Copied my internal SD backup back to internal SDCard
Reboot System
My restore had no issues and I am now back up and running just like I was before the AOSP ROM.
