New to rooting - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hi, I just rooted using Odin and installed jugs 4.1... What does busy box used for and do I need to install it?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App

Also I'm just curious as to purpose of installing a ROM after rooting? So far In jugs I've noticed it's just a Lil faster and I know can change
Colors in my status bar and the lock screen but other than that phones seems to be pretty much the same...am I just not seeing the deeper behind the scene benefits? Sorry if this is a dumb question as this is my first rooted phone...and the wife is asking me wtf the point ado would like to give her good answer lol

Busy box is a test to see if you are rooted; unless you are sharing big files.
If you have to be convinced to flash a rom I have no advice for you. Trust me its better

This is my first rooted phone as well and I notice big differences with roms. I was using Jugs4.1 for a while and my phone was way faster and had better battery life. Along with the quick toggles and ability to change the battery icon i felt like it was a very different experience. Right now I am trying out bombardier rom and the battery life is AMAZING!! I consistently get 20+ hrs and I am a pretty heavy user. Id say just try out different roms and then go back to stock and you should see the difference.

Give Eugene's Macnut Revenge a chance during your flashing.

Is that a ROM or kernel? Someone else suggested a Eugene kernel for jugs

Busybox is not a test to see if you're rooted............wtf with the false info.
Busybox is the source of most of the advanced commands associated with root access.
& to the OP
Please for the love of god, search next time. There is a bunch of topics already pinned about rooting.

Darkside's stuff is pretty impressive......

[Q] Question about Rooting the epic?

Any major benefits to it right now beside the major LoS issue. OC is not really a key factor in it for me with this phone since its fast anyway. I know custom roms usually always have a major benefit towards what they can do. but is it really worth it at this point. i have not once had any LoS issues, may just battery
PS. i just got my phone yesterday so i dont know much about samsung products. im use to rooting with HTC devices from the start of the hero, Evo, Evo Shift.
I waited a week to root and had no LOS. Then I flashed everything I could get my hands on and still haven't had LOS. The roms that are out all seem a little smoother and faster than stock. Just make sure you wipe data/cache/dalvik and format system before you flash a rom and you should never have any issues. Returning to stock is also so easy that there aren't any real drawbacks to rooting and flashing roms or kernels. If you're happy with the way it is now I'd just give it some time and read about the roms and kernels as everything progresses. I could live with my phone stock but I hate background processes and bloatware lol.

that's what im looking for, the better battery life, but stock is surprisingly good for me right now, except battery. Does either rom support signal feeds from other towers like CM did?? just curious, highly doubtful tho.

Do you mean forced roaming like on Verizon? If so then yes you can force a prl update to the phone that will let you control roaming. And as far as battery life I run the stock pulled kernel and have it set to 500Mhz Max when the screen is off and 1ghz when on and my battery life has been great (standby times are incredible).

ok well thank you. i been trying to find something useful in battery life. its stock right now due to researching make sure i use the right tools for rooting, but the phone dies rather fast with texting only, and when i dont text much.

Are there any ROMs that actually work

Are there any stable e4gt roms that are better than stock ek02 with everything working cuz battery life is a poor trade off for working features in my opinion. Example if wimax is not working or tether to get more battery life whats the point
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
..is this a serious question?
If so.. Just check out the devolpment section. Try out using calkulins ROM, his battery script works well.

I am also not sure how to approach this. There are only a few roms that don't support wimax.. I suggest calkulins. It's my go to rom. I've heard starburst is pretty good too.. But in the future, please try to read a bit. maybe look at the roms that have a lot of view and/or comments. The OP of each thread will tell you just about everything you need to know.
IMO, there is no more stable custom ROM right now then UnNamed. If I wasn't so flash happy, I would stay with that but I'm changing ROMs every 2-3 days now...
But anyway, yeah UnNamed is the best ROM as far as stability is concerned.
Oh and I got over a day of moderate use from it. Don't believe me though, try it out!
Have not tried unamed yet

+1 for Calkulin's roms. Good battery life, stable, so far I have not encountered any issues.
I've been extremely pleased with Calkulin's ROM. I have tried unnamed (which I also like) but I prefer the 5 icon dock and 5x5 app drawer and undervolt/underclock scripts in Calkulin's.
No, none of them actually work...stay on stock...

MJHawaii is right.. UnNamed is a hell of a rom especially with a few tweaks added in. I am quite sure you will not find anyone unhappy with it. Also like mentioned before there is a whole development section of great roms. Just make sure when you try them all you do not restore data and flash all of them cleanly and not on top of each other.
For battery life on this phone may I recommend 200-800 since your phone can clearly handle it...
no offence, but either dont flash and stay on stock or there is always the good ol flip phones!

All the ROMS that are built on TW source are complete - this excludes CM7 and MIUI which are AOSP. REALLY.

Got to agree with the previous poster that suggested you just stay on stock. I'd prefer not having to see posts/threads like this in the future....
For the record however, I've been happy with Calk's, Unnamed AND for quite a bit of time now (a whole month or so!) Blend is my current Daily and it is brilliant.
But you.... you stay on stock....

I've Tried Blazer and Calk's 2.8.1 IMO there are both amazing ROMS, and i would suggest giving them a try. I'm currently running calk's and i have not seen any issues after a couple days of heavy testing and use

blazer is my daily driver.
i have not tried a single rom that has just flat out been unstable or unusable though; i steer clear of early/experimental builds, bust most of the roms in the dev section for this phone are pretty complete and comprehensive.
this is my first android device and initially i had trouble just rooting the thing, but thanks to xda's dev section my first flash was a piece of cake and i've had no issues or major complaints in 3 months of jumping rom to rom.
Just an observation. But your avatar shows you have at&t, shouldn't you be in a different section? This forum is for the Samsung epic 4g touch. Maybe thats why the roms aren't working. Unless you just havent updated your profile. (Im guilty of that as well)

Recommend me a CWM flashable Rom based on...

Hey XDA
Ok Im new to rooting & I only haved rooted to the Wicked Rom as of late, didn't even try to go forward with their red/blue theme or bloat loader level 1 or 2 because theres no directions on even how to do it so w/e
Basically Im looking for a pretty basic stock mod either with ICS 4.0.4 or Jellybean. MY MAIN concern is all the stock functions that I should be able to use with the phone, (wifi calling all the way to motions).:good: 2nd BATTERY LIFE  , 3rdly, all around FAST & SNAPPY Not too worried about the overral lay out because I can use nova or go launcher to my liking... & of course, ZERO BLOAT WARE
CLIFFS OF RECOMMENDED REQUIREMENTS:
CWM Flashable
ALL stock functions.
BATTERY LIFEEEEEE
Fast & Snappy response
ZERO bloatware.
Would greatly appreciate the help, I searched around but not one any1 wanted these specific layout of priorities.
Thnx in advance!
Cheers~
Pretty sure the wicked themes are flashable. Although wicked v4 now uses aroma installer which lets you choose the theme, kernel, and bloat levels. Always be sure to back up before you do anything.

thanks but you know what? seems like its not that great on battery life IMO.
Depends also on what kernel you choose. Many say trinity and ktoonesz kernels are the best with battery life. Also check out the xquizit or crimson roms and Look through the threads and try to find what you prefer. No problem man. Good luck! Be sure to back up, factory reset, wipe cache & dalvik when switching between ROMs. (Make a habit of it )
Flash to latest stock via Odin, root and install titanium backup and remove the bloat yourself.
Honestly I am very impressed with stock! (I am running CM10 though)
Experimenting with kernels would be good, though they may break functionality...
All of those stock features that are so cool (motions) are battery consuming... though I have had consistent good battery with this phone. Coming from EVO 4g with 3500 mah extended battery that didn't last much longer...

This will be locked soon. And the most common answer will be "try them all", but you can try FreeGS3 JB in Android Development.
Also search for mods in Themes and Apps for a thread with "morph" in the title for full customization.

I have 2 ROMs for you that I have fallen in love with. The first is the latest Paranoid Android with its awesome custom options and battery life. And the other one is the one I'm using now, aokp with ktoonz. This ROM is also very customizable and has given me be best battery life so far.

Welcome to jelly bomb domination!...once you complete a full battery cycle and compare to other roms you will not mind the theming. Read/search the thread for how to mod it. You can get rid of the pull down graphic, slider and even the subdued background image that appears everywhere in v.8.0. At first I wasn't liking some of these either but now I barely notice them.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
The answer to your search depends on whether you want to keep Touch Wiz or not. The upside to Touch Wiz is that you can still use S-Beam etc.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I would just flash for yourself and see what you like best. Different phones react differently to ROMs so what works for some people may not work for you. It seems that most people here are using Jelly Bomb, Wicked Sensation, Paranoid Android, CM10. Try them for yourself, but be sure to give it a few days to settle before you make any decisions on battery life, stability, etc.

i have left jelly bomb and am now trying Frankenstein's kill joy v2.1 and wow am i loving it.. talk about performance and batt life.. quadrants in the 6k range. able to oc to 1890 Mhz using voltage control! super clean ui. can use silkui morphology mods to customize how i want.
idk.. the jelly bomb drove me nuts.. to much theme.
its was fun for the first 3 hours.. but yeah. it didn't grow on me.
i wish there was rom ratings poll.. for each device. and a stability rating along with the rating. if anyone knows someone or is capable of making this happen.. id be all over it! i know there is alot of junk troll crap out on these forms. I was looking at a rom to flash.. and baised off of OP it sounded ligit! then reading through the thread i soon found out that no one had been able to get the thing to even boot.. why cant posts like this be FLAGGED. idk. maybe the moderators were doing a crappy job or something. seems like they come in when least needed half the time ha. anyways. thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction!!!!
gladd this post didnt get deleted.
as for suggestions i think i will try PARANOIDANDROID. i had it running on my epic 4g touch and it was snazzy.. i dont remember why i left it.. i have "the collective" on e4gt now and was loving it.
anyways happy flashing and wish me luck!!

what do you think??
I'm in the same position. I upgraded from my 3 year old EVO 4G and am looking for where to start. This is a whole new learning lesson for me after being so use to roms and upgrading on the EVO. Are there some stable stock roms that have the sprint applications removed already? Which recovery is preferred as well. The EVO pretty much had only one recovery that worked well and Clockwork wasn't it. Not it appears there are 5 or six. TWRP is looking pretty good.

Awesome, thanks for the reply! Just wondering, can you define 'heavy'? I personally use my phone at school all the time, I listen to music through headphones about 1/2 of my total day(4 hours or so) and I will also spend a lot of time texting, browsing the web, and using apps that use data. Right now I'm on miui trying it out for the first time getting used to no app drawer. Favorite ROM for a daily (if I had one lols) would have to be Living Rejects. I flash it at least twice a week. Its pretty much my goto when I need a good solid dependable ROM for GPS and coverage while traveling. The battery life is effin amazing and music come out really loud and clear. But I will say once our beloved devs get cm10/AOKP/PA etc running solid for jb I will prolly be going back to PA or try out KK again. I love the UK customization options. I ran ICS aokp as a daily until jb started seeping its way into my veins now I'm flashing like there's no tomorrow can't wait for volume bug fix ^^
