Can the Nexus's CPU handle 1080p in Flash? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi guys,
Can someone please help me test if the Nexus is capable of 1080p playback in flash? I know that the Exynos CPU in the SGS2 is able to and it seems to be the ONLY CPU that can handle 1080p in flash. I know that the OMAP 4430 found in the Razr can't handle it, thus I wonder if the OMAP 4460 found in the Nexus might have a chance of pulling off this task. I am specifically talking about YouTube 1080p videos.
Please do not say things like no point streaming beyond 720p on a phone, trust me, it does make a lot of difference, especially when it comes to the audio(You get higher audio bitrate with 1080p).
Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you can't get an answer here look up the tech specs of the two chips.

So image quality effects sound quality?

What site are trying to stream 1080p flash from?

Nope, it's the audio bitrate you get with 1080p.

The two chips are identical, except that the OMAP 4460 has a higher clock GPU.

It works fine.

Also, youtube in the browser in 1080p works fine. Its clunky to use because the controls are too small but it works. You would be much better off just using the app.

Thanks man, now i can consider myself a nexus.

The CPU's are identical architecturally, clock speed is the same too.
If the gs2 could do it, the gn can do it.

That's not true, if you compare the Tegra 2 and the Exynos(found in the SGS2), The Exynos is actually much more powerful than the Tegra 2, even though they share the same architecture.

Omap4 has a built in hardware decoder that handles videos.

1080p HD recording for Epic 4G

I've been seeing alot of the newer android phones getting an app to replace the other camera app that allows 1080p HD video recording. Theoretically this should be an easy accomplishment for some one to make this .apk. however its yet to be investigated. So if anyone has any idea if this is possible or even if there is already a way to get 1080p recording please let me know! =D
Thanks,
Aaron
if this could be done i would give 20 bucks but i think its a hardware limitation that software is unable to overcome.
Those phones have different processors, camera sensors and other variations. I seriously doubt this will be coming to the Epic any time soon.
Doubtfull.
I may be wrong but I think we are limited to the 720p because of our single core precessor. If you look all 1080p phones they are dual core phones. So hardware is the limiting factor.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
According to the wiki, the camera on the Epic can only record up to 720p. Achieving 1080p could only be accomplished by scaling our videos on a computer after they are recorded.

Yes sir.....our phones need more horsepower, but how much more? There are some overclocked single core chips that can match or exceed duel core chips. Would an overclocked Epic @ 1.3 or 1.4ghz be able to accomplish this? Our Hummingbird chipsets have outstanding graphics processing capabilities. However, Samsung has been really lacking on their software part to push these phones to their full potential
Seems to me this is more a memory bus bandwidth issue than it is processor muscle. In theory a modest processor could deal with a very hi resolution video source if the compression method is efficient enough. The issue is having a wide enough bus to move that much raw video.

I understand the want to go bigger and better. But I made a 2minute video of my daughter splashing in some puddles at 720 and it was over 50mb! Try emailing that to grandpa. I had to upload it to dropbox and send out a link only.
I've actually scaled my video res down since then. Also, being on sfr my videos record in MP4 format, which is sweet.

Video Comparison: Galaxy Nexus vs Nexus S

Hey guys,
Wanted to bring you a quick hardware comparison video on the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S, mainly to show off the improvements that Google / Samsung made to the 3rd release of their flagship phones. You'll find comparisons on camera, processor and displays amongst a larger list. Hopefully you enjoy it!
Video below:
the GPU of the GN is clocked at 384mhz, so even though it's the same chip as the S, there is a boost in performance.

Actually, according to a recent find in the kernel, it actually isn't clocked at 384mhz, but at 308mhz. However, there are kernels that have overclocked the GPU to 384mhz and the cpu to 1.4 GHz (e.g. the francis francisco kernel)
Deleted, found it myself.
Also didn't mention the instant shutter for the GN.

Yeah I missed a couple of things but it wasn't meant to be a very detailed video. Thanks for watching though!

Why is video playback quality so poor?

It is really sketchy and not good quality at all, my GS2 has better video playback quality
YouTube looks crap, ESPN goals does too (you can hardly see the football) and so does any videos loaded through the browser
What are your thoughts?

The one I got rid of had dead pixels so it was being exchanged by the network and that is the one I did the scratch test on because I didn't care what the network thought due to the way they pissed me around. The replacement which I am contracted to, I still have.

How about an actual video file you copy to the device?
Does it look bad then?
I think netflix looks like **** on this phone.. though I attribute that to the fact that it isn't in HD..
Download a nice .mkv 720p HD trailer from the web, and view. It looks stunning.

Anything you'd recommend mate?
And do you think the videos I have mentioned look bad due to them not being optimized?
What I can't understand is why the i4 videos are so stunning clear yet these aren't when there isn't much PPI difference
that's the problem of the super HD devices
regular videos optimized for the web are too low quality for the phone
you will need at least videos optimized for 480 if not 720 for it to look good
so in youtube you need to select 480 if 720 is not available
that means you will also eat a lot more DATA if you are on 3G / 4G
this is one of the many reason why GN wasn't so appetizing to me
specially when 3G & 4G networks are not as fast as they advertise them to be

download jetvd, a google search will do. then view it in 720p or you can download it to your phone in 720p
As for YouTube are you watching from the browser or the app itself?
I compared an HD video in the youtube app between the Galaxy Nexus and the SGS2 and the Nexus wins hands down... the detail is far superior because of the newer youtube app on the nexus. When the SGS2 gets ICS and/or the same youtube app as the nexus then maybe it'll be closer.
For large MKV files the SGS2 will win because samsung supplies codecs to view almost any video you throw at it, where as the nexus is constrained by the codecs that AOSP supports, which isn't nearly as expansive.
I have no clue what the **** the OP is talking about.
Check out the 2012 trailer in HD (should be the first in YouTube when searching for "HD 2012 trailer"). And make sure it actually has the "HD" icon in the vid list when you get your search results.
There is a little frame stutter... but hell, my $2000 i5 + ATI 6990 triple monitor gaming system also has frame stutter with YouTube (nature of FLV). The clarity on the other hand actually surprised me. It's just as good if not completely equal to 1080p MP4 videos (like Kanye's 'Lights') which also play awesome.

video credits goto TSO Photography and I am just using it for demo purposes. No intention to violate any copyrights to the owner. Mods, please remove the link if you see this is in violation to rules. I apologize in advance.
What do you guys use to play MKVs?
The SGS2 has its own codecs, when I used other ROMs I would use Moboplayer.
But Moboplayer won't download any codecs on the Galaxy Nexus so it's basically useless. Next I tried Rock Player, with hardware decoding I get good video but no sound and in software decoding I get good audio but suttering video.
So what to do? Re-encoding is a pain...

YouTube 1080p Lag

Okay, so I have been watching videos from the full YouTube site and they work perfectly on 720p. When I play the videos on 1080p, the videos lags, giving me something like 1 FPS. Is there a solution to this problem? Is it something with the phone or is it YouTube's problem? If anyone has any sort of insight on this problem, please post. If you are having the same problem, also post.

YouTube 1080p runs in flash..what's you expect..also..why in the world would you watch a 1080p video on a 480p screen?

Before we had root in the first days of the sgs2, i was able to watch 1080 videos wonderufully on YT also, epicmealtime fyi. I tried it today and the stock browser lags. =/
Why? Why do you need to see 1080P videos on a screen that only does 480P? And of course it'll lag it's running on flash on a website not optimized for mobile. Geez this is a phone not a desktop gaming rig.
It's not your phone it's youtube it's self. Youtube has always lagged on 1080p videos. My desktop has problems with it and I have 8 gig ram. Intel i7 sandy bridge with AMD Radeon HD 6990. Ever since youtube upgraded their interface it has been plagued with problems. My connection is 20 down 5 up.
The phone can run hi 10bit 1080p blue ray h.264 mkv videos with the lowest and highest encode possible with out losing frames. Which looks better than anything you can possibly stream. There is nothing on youtube worth watching in 1080p most videos are upscaled anyway. Which really isn't 1080p anyway.

I watch 1080p videos because they look much clearer and less grainy than both 720p and 420p. I have tried different browsers but the same problem arises.

I think the screen size has a part to play as well. There was slight lag watching video. But mabye it's just this tablet :/
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
I think the lag is limitation of tegra 2 or dual core devices. I haven't tested equinox but I have qualcomm dual core evo 3d and its worse. However I have a Transformer Prime tegra 3 quadcore and there is no lag at all. It's smooth as it is on the tablet and TV.
IMO For the price and size there is no other 7 inch tablet that can do what the a100 can even via HDMI. So either you hold on and wait for other 7 inchers to come out that have better spec'd (which is probably atleast 6 months from now) or get a Prime =) that will cost you double the price.
To be honest the lag when streaming via netflix or youtube is not everytime. Also they depend on your network connection. I watch Netflix a lot via HDMI and I don't really see much lag other than when I start an app or flipping through screens.

Its not a limitation of the tegra2 but a limitation that acer has put on the device by not letting us overclock it. If we are ever able to run a custom kernel with overclock features and can overclock both the cpu and gpus you wont see any lag at all.

I agree that custom kernel, rom, or OC (which may never happen cause of acer) may eliminate lag however I think the OP is asking opinion based on stock performance.
I just did some testing and I don't know if it just my a100 or all a100 but if the battery temp past 95 f the CPU underclock to 456 so my Netflix starts to slow down big time. Is this a system setting for the a100 to not overheat? And why mini HDMI will make the battery temp go up to 98 f
