[Q] Cant get into download mode or get any computer to recognize my Galaxy s2 t989

i cant get into download mode at all. im on the tmobile version t989 and i tried everything. i did the official update to ics thru odin and now i wanted a pure android rom but i cant get into download mode. i think the problem is that i can only get into download mode when im connected to the computer but my computer or any computer for that matter wont recognize my gs2. i ordered a usb jig but was also thinking of replacing the usb port of the phone. i really have no idea what to do and was hoping someone here would beable to help me. btw when i plug it in to the computer all it does is charge and i can still boot into recovery but its android stock recovery. and i have tried to reinstall kies and have kies reinstall the drivers and go into the kies folder and run the exe file in USB drivers folder. nnothing seems to work. i dont know if it has anything to do with not having Samsung Mobile USB CDC Composite device in device manager.
any advice would be greatly appreciated
thanx
Let's just make sure you're following the right steps. Remove the battery for ten seconds, insert the battery, press and hold volume up + volume down and then plug the usb cable that is already connected to your computer. Continue holding the volume keys until the phone turns on into download mode. You press volume up to continue once download mode is down on the screen.
The power button is not used when booting into download mode.
Make sure you have Odin open before you connect the phone and you should see your phone connected. Then you can flash the stock ics for Odin found in development.

Post your general location.
Maybe a local can hook it up to their computer and give it a try.

tried it
i did that like other people have said to do but as soon as i plug in the usb it goes straight to the battery charging image. i have odin open i turned off and let the battery ist for 10seconds then i hold both vol up and down and plug in the usb and as soon as it plugs in it goes to the battey no samsung no tmobile logo just a charging battery.
what else can i try
Did you try another USB cord? I know it sounds funny but the cord from my g2x will not allow me to connect to PC with my gs2...just saying it might help...or try to reinstall the drivers
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
lol you upgraded from a g2x too.
yeah i have like 4 different cords and none of them work now but to get the updated 4.0.3 i had to use the cord it came with and that along with the other cords i have only charge now. i dont think its a problem with the cord that im using but thnx
forgot to mension a usb jig
i bought a usb jig its comming in the mail. would i beable to use that to get into download mode and get back to 2.3 when things were working?
Had the same problem with the wifes gs2. No matter what i tried, the phone would not be recognized when connected to a pc. It is a known hardware problem affecting some phones. I called up tmobile on saturday and they offered to overnight a new replacement. I suggest you try giving them a call.
i'll try tmobile
only thing is that i dont hav a warranty because i bought it from ebay but i will try thanx
Have you tried blowing a can of air in the usb port? Sometimes dirt or debit gets in there and causes it not to get a good connection.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
but it charges fine would dust cause it to loose connection to the computer and still let it charge?
Might also try removing battery, hold volume keys, hook up to computer, then reinsert battery.
Edit: Have you tried different ports on the pc? Mine, won't connect on one port.

Might be helpfull
Maybe i can help,
I know you're on t-mobile but maybe button combination changed or might be helpfull info....
I have the telus version of the SGS2 the ''X'' version..
I tried every possible ways to get access to the download mode but here is the problem i found.. the button combination to get access to the download mode is different from the t-mobile version.
On Telus version if you hold both volume up and volume down while holding the power button nothing will happen and it will only get in bootloop.
If you want to get access to the CWM recovery ( if installed ) or the original installation you have to hold both volume up and volume down but when you press the power button you have to release it when the phone vibrates and keep pressing the 2 volume buttons.
If you want to get access to download mode : you need to keep pressing only volume down and power button.. it will get you download mode after something like 3 seconds. Then it will show you a warning screen and ask you to press volume up to continue or volume down to cancel and restart the phone..
I taught it might help you or others with similar problems
I guess what i realy want is to beable to flash a different rom
is there any other way to flash a custom rom without using download mode. i would like to beable to connect to my computer but the whole point is to get a different rom because i dont like samsungs ICS. i want a pure android 4.0 rom with working camera. can any body please help me

This was one of the methods i tried to get into download mode but i think that it goes into download mode when odin is open and the usb is plugged in. this is where i think im having the problem because when i connect to the computer all im getting is a charge no matter what usb i use or what computer i go to. if my computer wont recognize it then odin wont know that its connected and i cant flash any custom rom if i cant use odin.
i was hoping that there was another way to flash custom roms without having to use odin or download mode.
is there any way to do that.
also i can get into download mode using the jig but it doesnt realy help anything if odin still doesnt recognize it

[Q] stuck in safe mode

I have sprint Galaxy s3 with jelly bean rooted. On new years eve I installed a 3rd party app from the market to see if I could get a hot spot. don't even remember the name of the app. I ran it and it locked my phone up. I pulled the battery and when it rebooted it was in safe mode. In safe mode I uninstalled the program but it did not help me at all. Any time I reboot it goes right to safe mode. I have tried several times to get to download mode and recovery mode and have not been able to reach either. The phone works fine in safe mode I could even do a factory reset and with no problem the phone resets and goes right back to safe mode when it boots up to the new factory set up. No 3rd party apps are seen and no download mode or recovery mode can be obtained in the usual ways we use to boot to them. I am stumped any ideas from anyone.
Try use kies!
Hi. You can try this method.
1- get or make a usb jig
0r
2- turn off your s2. Pull the batt out for 10 sec and press on button w/out inserting the batt.
After doing that, try to boot into download mode. Sometimes yhe phone need some rest, juat pull out the batt for 5-10min and retry. I suggest that you try to enter recovery mode before heading to download mode..

Yeah, i'm at a loss, was gonna say if you can get into DL mode, then could odin to sock. I'm not sure of any other way to get around it and force that puppy to boot back into normal land.
Try this.. Power off phone... Restart, once you see Samsung logo, Press the Menu capacitive button repeatedly. (read this is how to get into safemode) maybe it'll work to reboot you OUT of safe mode. (Note i'm just searching the web to see if i can find anything) And i did pull that for a i9300 International, but it may work for this one as well.. (just a shot)
Seen another with similar issue, Pull SD and battery for 10 min.. When rebooted, went back to normal. Again these are all shots in the dark..

You have the root, why not use it instead of sudo-randomly smashing keys *Grin* ? If you don't have a Terminal app install one of those, su to root (answer to allow root when Superuser/SuperSu asks you) then run "reboot recovery". When/If recovery comes up wipe Cache, Dalvik-Cache, fix permissions and so forth, then try to restart into the system and see if "Safe Mode" crap persist.
I had my phone come up in Safe Mode one time, can't remember what I played with to even trigger it though. If this doesn't work, you can use something like Rom Toolbox Pro, or another fun tool to wipe the caches while the phone is up in Safe Mode.
Happy Flashing,

That is the one thing that has me questioning. The volume button seems to move freely however; I have tried volume button when booted up in safe mode and the volume down does not move. the volume up moved the volume control up. although when pressing vol. down when trying to go do download mode it boots to download warning screen. unless it is stuck on internally. I don't know, cause the button moves freely.
Mine was in safe mode once. All I did is reboot it and mine went away.

Thanks this d root is no longerdid help me make my decision . I am taking the phone to sprint store. by downloading and using keys it seems that the software does not cause my problem. I hooked up to kies and did a complete firmware upgrade. Although there is no upgrade it still reloaded jellybean. It did a complete restore though and root is no longer present. Super user is gone. But I still have the same safe mode issues. I am guessing that this is a hardware problem probably the volume key. I feel ok with taking it to sprint since root is gone. who knows maybe i'll get a new one. Thanks to all who helped I surely appreciate it.

Can't enter ODIN dl mode

I have a galaxy s2 and I cannot get the phone into ODIN download mode. When I plug in the USB, while holding the down and up volume button it goes into recovery mode A3 but no DL mode. Are you trying to recover from a bad flash? Did you already root your phone? Did your try to wipe cache/factory reset from recovery? Is your phone unable to boot?
No
I've never flashed the phone before, it's not rooted and there is only the built in recovery mode. I have factory reset once but its when I first got the phone.

1-use ODIN to flash cwm (clockwork mod) & root your phone First
2-after that u flash any custom ROM while in cwm.
How:
1- your pc has to have samsung usb drivers (one way to do that is to downlaod samsung Kies)
download to your pc these files:
“recovery-cmw-hercules.tar”
CWM-SuperSU-v0.87.zip
get them from here http://galaxys2root.com/t-mobile-galaxy-s2/how-to-root-icsgb-on-t-mobile-galaxy-s2-sgh-t989/
Now, to put phone in download mode: Turn phone off- take battery out Then put it back in- hold vol+/- down & plug usb cable in phone
screen will come on- move vol up -----> u in download mode. (at this stage only usb cable or you following steps can make this not work)
Start ODIN........u can see the rest from link above.
After phone is rooted and has cwm installed Now u can copy any ROM to scdard and flash it through cwm.
to put phone in cwm (recovery) same as above except Hold vol+/- & power button (no USB cable) samsung will show up on screen Let go of power button and keep holding vol+/- ----> now u are in recovery ....install your rom + gapps and reboot
Two importand thinhs: after rooting and installing cwm ------back up your current rom & make sure make sure you flash ROMS for your device (Hercules) only ....u flash a rom/kernel for another device YOU WILL brick your phone,
after the first time....its super easy
Hit thanks

Pull the battery, plug the cable into the phone, Hold the up and down rockers, put the battery back into the phone and power it on while holding the rockers. A yellow screen with a warning will come up. Pressing the Up rocker will get to DL mode. Pressing down will reboot the phone. But unless your phone is connected to the computer/power, DL mode is difficult to get to. Hope that helps
when do you put the battery back in?

You can download quickboot from the market.
Thanks that works but i wonder why i cant boot using the button combo its just strange all the buttons are working. but i can get into recover mde now so that is good
That is strange, I say use Odin and go completely stock, no root, and see if it still acts the same. If so then it might be hardware related.

Follow these instructions implicitly.
Hold POWER + VOL DOWN + HOME.
As soon as it restarts change to VOL UP while still holding the other buttons.
Do NOT let go of any of the buttons until recovery boots.

That's what I've been doing exactly but for some reason it just goes right back to the logo screen. I was able to get into the recovery mode one time out of 100 and I went through the process of factory reset but it didn't solve the problem. Now I can't get back into it. It's weird because I have no problem getting into the download mode pressing the volume down but volume up doesn't seem to work. Not sure why or what to do
I'd try reflashing stock recovery then try booting into it again.
If it flashes then you should be able to boot into it.

You haven't bricked anything, there could be any number of reasons why it won't boot past the logo.
Easiest way to resolve it would be to reinstall the stock rom.

That's the exact same situation I'm in. Every time I restart it I can't get passed that damn Samsung logo screen. I tried the whole flash with Odin process but I realized that when I connect the tablet to the computer, I get an "MTP Device Driver Failed" message so I'm assuming since the computer doesn't recognize it, even tried with KEIS and it doesn't, that I'm unable to complete the Odin job because that goes until 'Initialization' and stops there. Were you able to fix yours?

No I can't. I've tried a thousand times in all different sequences of holding the three buttons and it just doesn't go. It's SM-T800. They screen shots on the first page is exactly what I get. The two files below should boot you directly into recovery as soon as you start the tablet if you can flash them. Flash with Odin from the AP slot.
Make sure you put the device into DOWNLOAD mode first then connect your usb cable!
You can then do a factory reset and then try and flash the stock rom.
Stock recovery
Twrp recovery

Yeah I tried that too but when I connect the tablet to my comp, I get this 'Samsung Mobile MTP Device Failed' message so my comp doesn't even recognize the tablet. I even tried connecting with KEIS but that doesn't see it either because of that error. Idk if that's related to this issue that I'm having but I'm assuming that since the comp doesn't recognize the tablet because of that error, it won't finish the ODIN job. I get up to 'Initialization' and nothing after. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Samsung drivers and that didn't work either. Seems I can't catch a break here

Mtp, kies and anything else is irrelevant, they are OS dependent.
Just put the tablet into download mode. Download mode works in boot loader mode. No need for the os.

Ok we need to take this step by step as theres something amiss here.
DID YOU AT ANY POINT WHILE THE TABLET WAS WORKING ENABLE 'REACTIVATION LOCK'?
1. Ensure the Samsung drivers are installed (important) Samsung usb driver
2. Before connecting anything to the PC put the tablet in DOWNLOAD mode first.
3. Plug the USB cable into a USB 2 port
4. Wait for the 'ADDED' message (if you dont get this it wont work)
5. Load the tar file into the AP slot.
6. Click START
7. If it doesn't start to flash reboot the tablet directly back into DOWNLOAD mode without touching anything else then unplug and replug the USB cable back in.
8. If it still doesn't flash try ODIN 3.07 ODIN
9. Report back and post a screenshot (if it doesn't work).

I know for a fact that I never enabled the Reactivation Lock.. But you know, after literally days and hours including my entire weekend just searching the internet and trying every possible fix scenario that people have tried, I just gave in and sent it to Samsung this afternoon to have them fix it. Nothing I was doing seemed to work and I do believe I tried everything within my little knowledge to try. Let me ask you though, when I get it back in normal working order, would going through the steps to install the TWRP recovery and a ROM prevent me from being in this situation again or at least be able to actually fix it on my own?
If you dont mind tripping Knox and possibly warranty then I believe installing custom recovery is one of the best tools you can Install to a device.
It can get you back to a working state in minutes if you make a full backup.
It's a no brainer to install custom recovery if you intend to root and modify the device in any way.
