New sd card questions - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hAve just bought a new sd card and have a couple of questions. Do I just save the current contents to desktop and then drag and drop it to the new card? Also can anyone provide an idiots guide to partitioning ?

I copied and pasted the sd card contents. Be sure you copy all the folders

Just copy the files from your old SD card to your PC, then put in the new one and copy the files to the new SD card

Tried that a few times and despite the system saying it has copied all the files over, the folders are all empty and the shortcuts have gone from the phone.
i.e. the medi file has no media and the DCIM file has no photos.
Copy and paste doesn't seem to work in this instance,

Weird. I recently transferred my data from my 2gb micro SD to a 8gb one by copy and paste. And nothing has changed on the device. Did you copy everything (including hidden files if any)?

transfer files from one card to another (new one)

I just bought an upgrade to my old 8gb Sandisk card. I bought a 16gb RiData Class 6 microSD because my old card cannot handle anymore storage.
Here's the deal, how do you transfer the files safely from the old card to the new one and run it smoothly just like the old one? Do you just simply copy all the files of the old card and then just paste it to the new one? or any program to use or other methods in doing this?
I have read a thread about this that he just copied all his/her old files and then paste it to the root of the new card but he/she cannot make it work well. I would like to have a word from everyone for safely transferring my files. thanks.
Unless you have stuff in ext3/3/4, just a copy and paste should do it. After my N1 was stolen, I copied a backup of the SD onto a new card, threw android onto my TyTN2, and after installing the APKs, all of the programs found the data they should have.
how about the files that i transfered in the card using app2sd and my backup in titanium backup? Will it work using copy paste method?
whats on yopur old card have you done any formating? if your just useing it as storage you should be able to copy them over easy
Yeah I only use it for storage and nothing else.

If it's just storage, then drag and drop should be fine. If there's any special formatting, then you might have to google a program that makes an image of the SD card, and transfer thaqt image to the new card. Bit more of a pain, but it gets the job done.
thank you guys. Been new to android and doing some stuff.

Can't access SD card

Hi,
I both a new A100, I put the Sd card and downloaded some epub files (saved in the SD card, acording an incomming message. But I can't access the SD card, where to find it to open the downloaded files. I need another app, or it's other way.
Can somebody help me?
SD Card is mounted in \mnt\external SD. You may need to navigate up,you might be starting in \mnt\sdcard
I'm having the same problem here
Is there any way i can put everything I downloaded directly on the sd card instead of internal. Like files I downloaded they went to my internal instead of my sd
please reply thank you

Micro SD Card Question

Ok, so I have my Droid Incredible, which is rooted, and the 2gb storage is almost up, I want to buy another Micro SD Card for the phone, will the mess anything up, and is it possible to copy all important root files and put copies of the rules to the new SD Card ?

Your root is on the system storage of the phone, not the SD card. If you swap it out, you won't have any problems.
Also, you can copy the contents of the SD card over to the new one so you don't mess up any applications that have data on the SD card.
Man, thanks i had the same doubt

More Micro SD card questions

Just picked up a 32Gb Sandisk Class 10 card (BTW Best Buy now matches Amazon prices...got it for $19.00 for 32 Gb).
I installed it and it registers as having 29.71Gb of free space. What is using the rest, the file system? There is only one folder on the card. It is "LOST.DIR", which is empty, and from my understanding something that is only needed if I have a Mac system, for orphaned files.
I tried to drag my music over from the internal memory to the card (while connected to a Windows XP machine via USB cable, and set to MTP) but all i get is a circle with a line through it as I attempt to drag and drop the files. I figured the SD card would act just like another drive and allow the transfer, but it won't. So, is there a way to drag and drop files from internal SD to external SD? I'm trying to move my music files from internal to external SD.
My card is formatted as Fat32, should I leave it that way, and will it work with my rooted and Loki'ed CWM-restore phone?
Should I attempt to put a DIY file structure on the SD card? What I"m asking is...should I create a folder named " music" for example, and then install all of my music files and subfolders in that "music" folder? Or should I just install them to the root of the card? The same question goes for ringtones, and notification tones, pictures, videos, etc...
Thanks!
It really doesn't matter where you place the files, the phone will pick it up and be able to read and play it.

32Gb which was claimed by manufacturer is UNFORMATTED size.
once it is formatted, the size will shrink. how much it will shrink? it depend on the filesystem.
in short : it is normal.
Just use a file browser app from the play store to copy files on the phone between internal and external. It will be a hell of a lot faster too compared to doing it on the computer.

Strange, I cannot drag and drop files to the root of the SD card (neither through Windows XP with the card in a reader/writer, nor while the card is in the phone). I had to create a folder (I named it "Music") in the root of the card, and then I was able to drag the music files from the desktop to the newly created music folder on the card.
