WIN!

i've been filming high qual vidz on my phone.. 500mb each and uploading em one at a time. your way is faster

I have the new client installed, did it yesterday and I have 3 gig total space. When I uploaded your file, it got to the 3 gig limit and said I had used all of my space with out giving anymore.....any ideas??
Dropbox 1.3.12 is what I'm using....thanks in advance.

Drop box will only give the increased space if you upload it via the camera upload feature. So no uploading videos will not work, and also dragging the pictures into the camera upload folder in dropbox will not work also.
Also the new experimental build is 1.3.13
https://www.dropbox.com/help/287

Ok....I still dont get it...sorry. Do I need to move your file over to my phone and then plug it into my PC??
Edit: I got it...move pics to phone start everything and let them upload....I also have the new version...thanks.

Install the latest experimental build. Rename the folder to camera, if you are using your phone save it in your Internal Storage in the DCIM folder.
Then go to Control Panels > Hardware & Sound > Autoplay
Then put your phone into MTP mode by disabe usb debug mode in application development
Set your auto play to use drop box like below
Then plug in your phone again and it should start uploading via the drop box camera upload

Ooo thanks for the dummy files. I had started last night uploading what little pictures I actually had but this is much easier!

I don't think you read the directions.

FWIW, I just downloaded the experimental build of Dropbox to my computer, downloaded the dummy files in the OP, threw them on a thumb drive, unplugged and then plugged the thumb drive back in. The files transferred, then I just deleted the files from my Dropbox folder.
Didn't even mess with my phone.

That is also how I did it myself, those extra stuff was for the guy who was trying to do it with the phone and having trouble too.

I'm recording 100+MB videos and letting that upload. Very easy and quick in two hours i got mine up to 7.5 gigs. I'm wondering how high it's going to go. I'll post back when it stops increasing.
Edit: it stopped at 7.5 gigs. Oh well, good enough.

Works great from usb stick in pc when followed directions of install beta db file and set auto play to db for pictures after installing beta
Thanks OP for the tip.... already increased to 3.8 and counting... Stopped at 7.25 always wanted more db space.... Thanks again.
EDIT: I just noticed they increased my account to 7.8 Gig Today....

Windows
Code:
fsutil file createnew X:\DCIM\IMG_0001234.JPG 1073741824
- Change X:\ to your thumbstick or memory card drive assignment
- Make 5 different dummy files with unique filenames
- Disconnect, reconnect, open with Dropbox
Upload takes about 15sec per file.

Meda scanner taking long time to complete scan

Anyone know a reason why after rebooting phone the media scan takes a very long time?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It depends on how much you have on your sd card. The more you have the longer it takes.
I wonder what the ratio to time being done scanning is , because i only have maybe 2-3 gigs worth of media and it takes like 10 minutes to finish scanning media
It isn't just the size of the files. The number of files that it has to check matters too. If there are any folders that you don't need scanned, put a file called .nomedia in that folder and the scanner will skip that finder and it's subfolders.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
any way to find out what its scanning and where, or is it scanning the whole sd card?
It scans the whole sd card, except for folders with the .nomedia file.
What is the purpose of the scan? If I put the .nomedia file in every directory what would happen?
Then it won't know where pictures are music are on your sdcard. For example, pictures in a folder with .nomedia will not show up in your gallery.

So I can put .nomedia in many folders (like where apps are installed on the SD card) that I know no pics or music should be in.
Exactly what type of file does the .nomedia file need to be?

It doesn't matter. You can simply make it an empty text file. The media scanner just checks for a file with the name .nomedia. It doesn't care what kind of file it is.
will the .nomedia thing stop winamp from trying to play mp3(turns out they were .ogg) files that are simply sounds to a game? The game is dungeon hunter and the question is nearly academic because I don't really like it and will probably uninstall it in the near future.. But still, I want winamp to play my music mp3s, which are all in a folder /music and nothing else..
meh, I can just try it and see before anyone even reads this and replies..
SUCCESS! no more "raw1385" in my winamp playlist

I think if you put .nomedia everywhere you will basically lose all functionality of gallery, etc. You may want to try "Rescan Media ROOT" from the market. It requires root, as you can tell from its name, but it lets you turn off the automatic media scanning and do it manually whenever you need (which is almost never in my case). That combined with judicious use of .nomedia has been wonderful.
I guess if you change what media is on your phone a lot, this will be less useful, but for me, it's saved a tremendous amount of time and helped convert my high-powered media-scanning device back into a phone.
do you think that the type of sd card , like the stock one that came with the phone might be lower quality and take longer or is there one thats extreme high quality ?

The sdcard included is only a class 2, but it has more than enough throughput for the media scan. You can get a class 4 or class 6 card, but I doubt it will make much of a difference in the amount of time the media scanner is running.
My phone has been getting stuck often on the media scan process. Sometimes it get's stuck in the middle, sometimes it never stops. I recently reformatted my sd but the problem still exists. Also, I often have trouble mounting the sd in recovery. I'm using a class 6 8gb transcend which I've had for about a year or more. Is it possible my card is just going bad and is there a good way to tell?
Its the phone for some reason when I was on di18 it was taking a very long time to scan after awhile it just got really short. Sorry I don't the exact reasoning but I re formatted my card and it didn't help.

I guess you could try a different card with the same files and see what the difference in scan time is. Or try them both freshly formatted and empty.
There are always ways to test.

Public Service Announcement re: Dropbox

The update is absolutely THE single worst and cataclysmic update in Android history. Your grandkids will be asking you about the Dropbox disaster of 2011.
Anyways don't update it:
1. It will delete the Dropbox folder from your sd card,
2. Any files you want to save from the updated version of Dropbox must be "exported"; you have to choose the path every single bloody time,
3. "Favourites", or files available offline, are saved to android/data/data.
An analogy to drive it home: You buy a 2013 Porsche GT3, sight unseen, turns out the 2013 is based on a 1979 Lada chassis and drivetrain.
Haha, Thanks for the warning, I was just about to do my weekly updates too, I think I'll give this one a miss.
I suppose it's like going home with Liz Hurley and finding out she's Herrmann Munster

What a load of BS. No files are deleted whatsoever. They have been moved to Android / data / com.dropbox.android / files / scratch.

FYI, I do enjoy it, but your talking out of your arse.
I can upload/download multiple files with box and 100mb is MORE than enough for me.
I also find box more user friendly than dropbox and with better speeds.
So you enjoy being a dropbox fan boy and climb back under your bridge.
The problem with Box.net is that it doesn't have a free-sync option from the desktop. Desktop sync is for Enterprise/Paid users. Dropbox free quota is totally free by all means.
I didn''t like the update either. It now saves files in
/sdcard/Android/data/com.dropbox.android/files/scratch
which unfortunately is more complicated than
/sdcard/dropbox/
but it's here now and I don't know how to roll back. Also when opening a file with dropbox, does it auto-upload a file when saved? I'm not sure it does anymore...

Is there anyway to have my s3 install apps to my sd card

I understand the S 3 has an internal storage mine is 16 gigabytes. What I want or I'm trying to do is have my large games install to my external SD card. I don't know if there's a workaround for this I search the little bit and couldn't find any info I am still new to the s3. If anybody could fill me in I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance

Use Directory Bindhttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262
If you get lost in that thread you can follow my direction I posted in another thread. I copied it below. It basically allows you to have your game data stored to micro sdcard but its directory is binded to internal directory where the game data is normally stored. Its the same concept as GL to SD but I find works without any issues.
Here's an example
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Most games are stored in mnt/sdcard/android/data. So you need to create the same directory in your micro sd card for this to work. The other confusion maybe because when you add a new entry in Directory Bind you would think source is internal and target is extsdcard but its the other way around.
In root explorer go /mnt/extSDcard/ and create a folder called android and then a subfolder under it called data. (skip if you already have them)
Now go to /mnt/sdcard/android/data and you will see a list of games you've installed. An example in my case is Modern Combat 3. So in the data folder I will see a folder called "com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftM3HM" and within that folder is a subfolder called "Files".
Now we need to create the same folder and subfolder in your /mnt/extSDcard/android/data. (It's possible I didn't have to go as far creating a Files folder but I did in my case atleast for gameloft games)
Once you create the folders you can open up Directory Bind and Add a New entry.
Tap and hold the source field and it will open up a list of your directories.
You will point it to /mnt/extSDcard/android/data/com.123xxx/xxxxx then press Select.
Now tap and hold the mount field and go to /android/data/com.123xxx/xxxxx then press Select.
If you've already downloaded the game data when you opened up the game then check the box for "Transfer files from target to data." and then press Add.
Wait for the transfer to finish. When its done do a Bind Check in Directory bind. If you did it right then the floppy disc icon turns green. Any other color you did something wrong so compare both directories and correct any typos or maybe you pointed one or the other to the wrong directory.
Now some games are stored in just /mnt/sdcard/android/data/ and no subfolders. And I think some games are stored in months/sdcard/android/obb. Below are more examples of the ones I created.

I dont know really. The mod has been around for a while now and its still manual mode. But its really not hard to do. All games and most apps are stored in mnt/android/data or mnt/android/obb anyway so its easy to just create the same folder in your micro sd. And if you already downloaded the game prior to using Directory Bind, you can opt to transfer data from internal to your new directory when you add a new entry. I can add an entry in less than a minute. Also any time there's an update to the game data via play store, the update goes to external micros sd since its binded so you dont have to do anything else.

[TUT] How to get rid of automatically created .Thumbnails folder

Hello, I was going through a very serious problem since days. When we have few pics in Albums, it creates cache for those pics in memory qith folder name .thumbnails
Sometimes the size of these cache is more than 1.5GB+.
This is a big issue for devices like Xperia M, with very low internal memory.
So i got a way to solve this.
For that, you will need ES File Explorer. No root is needed for this.
You have to do is follow these instructions.
1. Open ES File Explorer.
2. Make the hidden files viewable.
3. Go to DCIM folder.
4. You'll see thumbails folder, delete it.
5. Now create new file and name it as ".thumbnails" without quote.
And you are done.
Click on "Thanks" is important before going to make this thing work. :beer:
Are you aware that despite reporting 1.5GB+ size, this folder takes only 30-40MB of your storage, right? It's an issue with the stock Album app that makes the database file size displaying incorrectly, replacing the stock version with an updated version in /system/app fixed that for me...
Also, preventing the folder being created cause a big performance loss in the Album app, since it'll always regenerate the thumbnails when you open the app, but after your guide the thumbnails won't be saved, so it'll do this all the time...
And additional info regeneration of the thumbnails every time you open album will cause more battery drain as it will increase the cpu load
Sent from my C2005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Well, this will be helpful for unrooted 4.1 XM single phones who are running on very lesser internal memory.
Sent from my C1904 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Are you sure that the cache won't just be created again?
If the answer is yes, rather than the "how to", i would be interested to know why you think that it is a good idea to completely get rid of .thumbnails...

I don't have a SD Card, but I have around 300-400 photos in the internal storage, in that case the battery loss will be noticeable (I tested your tutorial to measure and I lost 2% of my battery every time it regenerated the thumbnails). Also, the phone will get hot and laggy while regenerating the thumbnails, and it'll do this every time you use the Album app or the Photos widget. In that case I still prefer wasting around 30-40MB with the thumbnails folder than having the phone getting hot and laggy every time I need to access the gallery
Camera photos stored on MicroSD card.
Having the photos taken by the camera stored directly to the microSD card is not an option? [pause for effect]
I have a 64GB SanDisk Extreme, so it's faster than writing to internal storage anyway.
On 64GB nobody cares about a few indexing cache files...
In the Camera go to settings and change Data storage to SD card.
Basic 32GB Class10 MicroSD cards are cheap as chips these days.
No, camera can save in the SD Card normally, I just didn't buy a SD Card yet. My point is that even if you don't have a SD Card, the internal space you get freed by doing this tutorial (around 30-40MB) isn't worth because of the problems it causes (laggy gallery, phone getting hot, increased battery drain, etc)...
And here's a picture...

You can move pictures, music and videos to SD card too via:
Settings -> storage -> Transfer data to SD card (under Miscellaneous).
This is a reactive process task as it doesn't proactively move stuff as you can do with a lot of applications and the camera via settings.
But handy to have when one wants to do an internal data cleanup to free up what one can of the ~2GB internal storage.
I never said that camera wouldn't let me save in the SD Card, I have the same options you mentioned in my stock 15.2.A.2.5 too. I was referring to the .thumbnails folder, it'll be on your internal storage, and following the OP tutorial you'll permanently disable it, saving a few megabytes from internal storage, but as I said before, these few megabytes you save by following the tutorial aren't worth because of the mentioned side effects the tutorial causes...

That's super strange. What's your storage usage say? Is it showing something like only 16 GB used as if it's been all deleted?

So you're saying in the part I circled in my screenshot it's only 0.41 GB? Sure sounds like everything got deleted.

yup, thats what it shows, and the same thing happened this morning. When i go to look at a picture it will load then i get the circle like its doing something and then all the photos i took yesterday got deleted again. No idea what is going on, i guess gonna have to reset the phone
And you're just trying to view the photos with Google Photos?

Check January 1, 2009 in your album
Did you ever find a solution to this? I just got this phone and was really upset to lose photos of our vacation in the middle of nowhere. I could find the thumbnails, but not the high quality images. I could tell they were somewhere because the photos app was making stylized images with them. One of them was titled New Year's Day 2009. My phone thinks it's Jan 1 if I turn it on where I don't have service. A lightbulb went off in my husband's head, he told me to check my photos by date and go back to 1/1/09. They were there!! An annoying problem I hope Google fixes, but I'm so happy to have my photos!
