[Q] Best backup options for 1.72OTA?

I have a UK Desire Z, which I love!!! I have been reading up on rooting, and after researching a lot, I have got ADB up and running and am now comfortable using it. The next step is to permanent root/s-off so that i can install gingervillain.
The questions I have is this. I have the 1.72 ota update, so Im going to have to downgrade to do all of the above, and with this will be wiping my phone. but I have a lot of apps and things on my phone. Contacts im not so worried about as it syncs with my gmail, and I will backup the sd card on my pc. But for all the apps and other settings, what is the best backup solution. i know of titanium backup, but with that can I back it up on 1.72 ota and restore it into gingervillain? I know once ive fully rooted it and installed clockwork mod recovery I can do a full backup of the phone, but is there an efficient way to migrate everything from my 1.72 to a new rom? I know I will be getting temproot first in 1.72, so can use things like titanium backup before the wipe.

Titanium Backup works really well. Been using it for several months now. I bought the pro version for batch restore of apps.
You will be able to use it just fine to back up all your apps then restore them all together into any other ROM you flash. They all stay in the Titanium Backup folder on your SDcard. The nice thing about it is that it saves all the app data as well (assuming you choose to back that up), which allows your apps to be restored to the exact point at which they were on the original ROM (aka game save states, passwords, preferences, etc.)

About titanium backup pro

Is this software any good for something? I mean since i can do nandroid backups and all other kind of backups with toolkit, im trying to find a reason for not uninstall it.. And forget about it..
Looking for some answer like Yeah.. Thats a good software for doing xxxxxx wich you cant do with CWM or toolkit and in fact go do it now cuz your phone will get xxxxxxxx awesome enjoy...

TiBU backs up your apps and then restores them after you flash/wipe, that way you dont have to re-download them all.. You can do a batch install and install them all quickly.

It can also freeze/hide apps, repair market links, clear the Dalvik cache, extract apps from your Nandroid and sync your backups with Dropbox or Box.com. In general, it's pretty awesome.
Backup and restoring apps without downloading, like WiredPirate said, is probably the best use, especially if you flash different roms a lot.

Its really worth it! It use to piss me off every time I flashed a new from I had to start all over in angry birds but now I can just backup my Angry Birds data and flash a new rom then restore my Angry Birds. Its worth the price.

you can also create an "update.zip" and restore everything from recovery, huge time saver

What these guys said. If you insist on constantly flashing ROMS like I do you will soon realize its worth. Especially batch restore. Worth it alone for that. I can choose the apps I want and let it install automatically, no need to keep pressing accept and done after each individual app. Saves battery with screen off and I can carry on doing something else.

it's worth every penny, the developer is great, they have kept it up to date and have avoided the temptation to make a new version to force people to re-buy the app.

Aite im gonna thank you all guys.. i own the app.. and the last time i flashed a rom it didnt want to restore the apps and i had to re download everything... maybe im still noob at it..... guess i just have to look closer at it and see what i did wrong last time..

Worse case scenario, re install the apps then use Ti to restore the data for the apps you care about (usually what I do anyways)

Titanium is needed to restore your app data. A nand restore can't do this since it restores the previous rom that you created the backup from.

Use the guide in my sig when you install your next rom man.
It runs you through basic TB usage.

[Q] android-process-acore-has-stopped loop after Titanium restore

So I was hoping I could use Titanium to fully restore to a replacement phone and unfortunately that didn't go very well. No matter what I tried reinstalling, the phone would keep reporting that the acore process has stopped
It looks like the S3 is supported so not sure why this would be happening. Any advice on Titanium usage?
Also I would love to know whether there is a better way of handling backups / restores. I ended up reinstalling all my apps manually and adding settings etc because I just couldn't get any of the backup to work

As long as you didnt restore any 'system' apps you should be fine. If you move between ICS and JB roms, DO NOT make a backup of system apps, only user apps....hope this helps!

Seems like you maybe need to read some posts for NOOBs on the forum, before making major things with your phone, pal. There are plenty of ways to backup user apps and settings, starting with Google server and stock SGS 3 backup, to advanced Titanium Backup for Rooted phone or nandroid backups. Just read and do your homework.

Well, I thought I did. I may be new to this forum but that doesn't mean I didn't ask at other sites or read up on Titanium. It looked like it would be enough to do what I wanted but the app obviously is not meant for full back and restore. At least not with the s3

[Q] Quickest way to backup apps+data before flashing a new ROM?

Question is in the thread title.
In the past, when I had a Samsung Infuse 4G, MyBackupPro worked wonderfully for backing up apps and data before flashing a new ROM, and painlessly restoring apps and data after flashing a new ROM (by painlessly I mean all at once, as opposed to having to go through and click "restore" for each app and data). However, for whatever reason, MyBackupPro is not playing nicely with my Note 2. I can backup and all that, but restoration never occurs. In fact, most times it won't find the backup to even restore!
So, what is everybody's favorite/easiest way to backup before flashing a new ROM, and restoring after flashing a new ROM? Preferably a free option.
When I was working with the Infuse, I seem to remember lots of developers saying to NEVER restore data after flashing a new ROM. I don't understand why that is. I know people aren't starting their games and stuff over from scratch when they flash a new ROM, especially since many people change ROMs every couple of days.

I use titanium backup. Works great with the note 2.
When they are saying don't restore data they are talking about system data. If you backup everything including system apps and data and restore from that it can wreck havoc.
Just backing up user apps and data is fine to restore, at least I've never had a problem. I would just be wary going between touch wiz and aosp ROMs that could get a little dicey, but between the same type of ROMs(ice cm10.1 to aokp or pacman or aospa) should be fine.

i used Helium (used to be Carbon) by Koush, the creator of CWM and ROM Manager) recently when i switched ROMs. i have always used Titanium Backup, but thought i would try Helium. the process is super easy and went very smoothly.

I believe when it comes to backing up/moving apps + data, time, convenience or money saving should simply stay out of the decision making process. BUY the best there is, spend time to learn how to properly use the tool and that will give you the quickest, most convenient and money saving solution. In other words, this is where you shouldn't be cutting any corners. I would recommend either Titanium Backup Pro or ROM Toolbox Pro.

I bought Helium Premium and it worked beautifully. Now I have no reason not to try every ROM available for this phone. Thanks guys!

My backup pro + root will do the job nice. If you're not seeing your backups try going into settings and check that your backups are going to EXTENT sd.

Dude I want the premium version of this app...Can you please provide me

I've been using titanium backup pro. It works pretty well, and it's pretty fast. Sometimes there are problems accessing my backup folder after a new flash, but restarting and fixing permissions will usually fix it.

did you set the backup location under settings when you redownloaded the app to point to the location of your backup folder?

+1 titanium backup..when restoring after a rom install..make sure to restore only apps never restore apos wirh chemicals system data...you'll have conflicts then.
Titanium backup is the best in my opinion. .you can backup bookmarks, message sms, call logs and even send them to dropbox and restore them just as easy...

I agree that Ti Backup is a good option. I wont say its the best period, but it is the best that I have used.

So here's a question for you guys.....................
I have the HTC One M8 and am rooted and S-OFF, as well as ViperOne M8 and Titanium Backup.
Whenever I get an update from Team Venom for ViperOne, I notice it says just as it's finishing the reboot (post-install) that it's upgrading my apps. So does that mean that the backups that I have (for my apps) which are stored in Titanium Backup are no longer current? I don't think the upgrade process affects the backed up data that was done pre-install, so it seems like that data would be outdated at this point?
Please answer if you think you know.

No it doesn't, usually when developers release a new ROM update they also update all of their stock apps on their ROM to the newest versions. Because of that, when you reboot it tends to say that because it is updating the apps for it and or caching them. (this is to my knowledge of how it works, still though your backups are fine)

Hopefully you are only talking user installed apps? Is not a good idea to be restoring system apps.

correct, YOUR apps, that you backed up to TB are current as of the day you backed them up.
once you restore them, via TB, then of course, open play store, and let it check and see if there are any updates to YOUR previously backed up apps.

So ViperOne is updating TB for me? If so, is that updating the TB backups as well??

It is updating any apps that come with the ROM such as the HTC TV app or other HTC apps, TB is not included because it is not one of the pre-loaded apps that the developer included with the ROM. Also as stated above, the TB backups are not touched by this, they stay the same as they were when you made them soo you have to update the backups yourself if you wanted to.

Ok, that's what I thought. I just needed to hear you say it in a different way to be sure. lol
So anytime there's a new update, I'm gonna need to re-backup all the apps with TB then. Seems like TB is only good if you mess something up and wanna restore the apps' data. When you're just doing an incremental update, or especially a full ROM install, then it's useless. I may just uninstall it.

THIS is the proper way to use TB...

I've used TB for years. After flashing clean, I just restore my user apps, data also for some and aside from a few system settings.... I'm right back how I was.
I use Nova, so restoring it's settings puts my home screens right back how they were too.
Not sure why people would want to mess with Nandroid data restores when this whole process above takes hardly any time and never brings issues. ?

Ehh, it was late last night when I posted that, and I was cranky. lol
I don't have the PRO/donate version ($5.99?? geez), so I can only schedule up to 2 days max for automatic backups.

Yeah I noticed that too as I also have Nova.
So you're saying you never do any nandroid backups? Interesting. Where do you save the TB backup files? I don't like saving them on internal storage, so I just transfer them to a flash drive or OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive).

I occasionally do a nandroid. Only for a full restore. And usually just before wiping and Flashing something. I don't always, cause I can flash roms or stock manually just as easy.
And I just keep my TB backups on the device.

I see. Ok. I'm still gonna do them, but more for emergencies than anything.
I did that but then one time recently something happened and my internal storage got wiped clean. I save a copy on my external SD card, but then I thought "what if my phone got lost?", and decided to just store it on flash or cloud. Just wish TB would let you store it on THEIR own server so you don't have to worry about doing it manually or automatically elsewhere. The options they have like Google Drive don't offer as much space. I have Google Drive but don't want to give up the space. And I think DropBox is only 1 GIG? There is that Titanium variant that stores them automatically for only $2.99, but that got bad reviews.

I've used TB for a few years now (paid version). I use it mainly to backup my user data just in case. Right now my M8 is stock (just got it and I wait until my warrenty is up before rooting etc) so I'm not really using it now. When I do root I'll be able to take my user data from a few games I'm playing on my rooted Transformer Prime and put the data on my phone. That's really the only thing I use TB for execpt for freezing bloatware so I can unfreeze, use Voodo Root Keeper (if it works on the device) and get OTA's. User data is always my biggest priority. I can reinstall any apps from the play store. Yes, this can take some time but doing it this way, when I f-up I can pick and choose what apps I put back on and leave off apps that I installed in the past but never use anymore. To each is own I guess. One good example was about a year ago Google updated the standard music app. I hated it. It screwed up all my album art and I hated the new interface. I used TB to restore the older version and it was like it never happened.
