I just seen a demo/preview of the Windows 7 Mobile Operating System and I must say it looks very nice (take a look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IOTrqlz4jo)
I am curious if it could be used on the TP2/Tilt2 devices once its release in November?? If so, I am very excited.
Does anyone have any insight on this??
Thanks!

Until we can get a working version of 7 Series, I find this discussion pointless.
All we know is from one conference, and a bunch of videos demoing it.
From what we were told at the recent conference:
- Needs capacitative screen for multi-touch with at least four points of touch
- Needs 1Ghz processor or equivalent (the demo device had a Snapdragon)
- Accelerometer
- 5-mega-pixel camera
- FM Radio
- WVGA screen (480×800 not mentioned as a requirement, only WVGA)
- Every phone will have a Bing (search) button, Start button, and a back button.
What the Touch Pro2 is lacking:
- The 1Ghz speed
- Capacitative screen
- 5-mega-pixel camera
My guess is that it will not be a complete rewrite as history has shown time and time again. The restive screen code might still be there for some smart person to re-enable but I highly doubt that all the features of the OS will work through resistive. Also the screen size has not been listed as a requirement, only WVGA was stated. I know all current WVGA devices have a resolution of 480x800 but higher resolutions exist on paper. So at 480x800, is that enough?
My final thoughts: many will try but the screen and over all speed will be a major issue to deal with. If it does get ported to the TP2, the over all experience will be poor enough to fall back to a 6 Series OS.
i dont think it will be well received. it doesnt look like it runs any current windows mobile apps.
From looking at that youtube vid who cares if you can run it on a TP2! Why would I want to ?
Not very impressive. What's the bet it's the same old thing with a different gui ?

I couldn't help watching it and thinking "I don't see anything yet that I'm willing to pay $600 for." It looks nice, but I say wait and see how Microsoft turns it into a pile of crap...
Hey, maybe it'll come with glasses and be in 3D. Seems unlikely though.
If you want to make money short Microsoft (IMO)
I have to say I'm 309% underwhelmed by what I've seen so far of this new ZunePho.....uh, "Windows Series Mobile 7 Set Phone Type...7" wtf ever
I doubt very much that Windows Phone 7 Series will come to any older devices excpet for possibly the HTC HD2.
A big part is it requires a GPU for the animation, and unless WP7S has drivers for the TP2 (if the GPU is even good enough) your not gonna get anywhere.
Also Capacitive will be a stumbling block. There will be plenty of new phones out that will run it very well. So it will be a perfect time to upgrade to a CPU that is atleast 1Ghz.

As you've seen, Redmond anticipated your wish, and officially granted it a few days ago lol.
I should probably state my position on this a little better than I first did:
While I don't argue that this new OS is indeed advanced (perhaps even revolutionary), and seems quite capable at what it does...I still feel strongly that this is not the spiritual successor to the current evolutionary path of the windows mobile platform. I know that's why they played semantics with the marketing name, tagging it with the "7" as if it was the next logical step from 6.5...when in reality it's only a timely branding tie-in to the success of the desktop 7.
Let me put it this way...if the desktop 7 had been a flop, they would have called this new gadget The ZunePhone, because it's that much more than it is WinMo7.
Can I see a show of hands for who else is seriously concerned that what we love most about WM is not likely to be around for very much longer...? I know there's been remarks made that 6.5+ will still be supported, developed for, etc...but until I see some confirmed roadmaps and such, I still think the natural life expectancy of my platform of choice looks a lot more finite than it did a little over a week ago.
EDIT: Right after I wrote that, I found some news that makes me feel a little better about some of this

Actually, I'm old enough to think of a different comparison:
Years ago Coke came out with "New Coke" with a new taste -- more like Pepsi...and the backlash was so strong that they had to bring back the original recipe as "Coke Classic" in parallel with New Coke.
Unfortunately, I think MS is trying to attract the majority of potential customers who don't [think they] like WM...so they're coming out with something that's not WM.

I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to do this, from what I've read already. Plus, think about what you mean when it comes to multitasking because it means different things to different people.
STOP BELIEVING things that have no evidence behind them.
MS has NOT said that multitasking won't exist.
MS has NOT said that backwards compatibility won't exist.
MS has NOT said much more than the little said earlier this week. Stop believe what WMexperts has told you, it turns out MS was just taking you for a ride with those rumors.
Stop being an idiot and wait and see what happens when it comes to the release date.
You guys are basing your opinions on what you saw 8 months before the actual release of the product. THINK ABOUT IT. Just because your dumbass thinks this and that about a premature product, doesn't mean anything. STOP jumping to conclusions. It's really making you look dumb. MS is not going to sit there demoing a new product and talk about copy and paste. Why would they? Ohhhh, because SOOOOOO many people care about that in the world. I appreciate copy and paste and backwards compatibility just as everyone else does, but the truth of the matter is, you just don't know anything about Windows Phone 7.
Hey guys, I wasn't sure if this belonged in "General" or "Development", but I figured putting it here was the safe bet. I haven't used much ARM specific code in my work so far on Android apps, so I was just curious if the DInc supports ARMv7-A (I know the Droid and Nexus do, but beyond that I am unsure). I've always avoided the ARM platform, but my current apps (including an almost complete clone of the game "Advance Wars" [it uses more of the features seen in the DS versions than the GBA titles]) need some serious optimizations (sound is lagging behind visuals and moving a group of units produces a "chug-a-lug" motion instead of a smooth transition).
Also when the NDK is updated for x32 code, do you think the DInc will be included in that list? I will end up downloading ARM tutorials/books from my school's digital library account anyway since I know there are some ARMv5 techniques I could be using, but I would love support for x32, as I wouldn't have to learn anything I don't already know =p (well, except for anything Android-specific). Thanks!
I can't help u with your problem, but good luck advance wars is amazing favorite game ever for gameboy advance

I'm no expert, and I'm not sure if you've found your answer, but couldn't you use the cpufeatures call in the new 2.2 NDK to determine if the Dinc supports ARMv7-A? I don't necessarily mean within your actual app, but perhaps within just a simply "Hello World" shell?

I'm glad you got it working...curious what the ultimate answer is.
Yes, we enjoy it here very much. We just moved here from Fredericksburg...I commuted to DC for quite a while. Actually, to Bethesda if you want to be technical. I got tired of my 3:30AM to 7:00PM days. It's wonderful here. My only complaint is that locals have no idea how good they have it. "Traffic was terrible, it took me TWENTY MINUTES to get to work today!" ::rolls eyes::
And Domo-kun...what an unappreciated character. I think it's fascinating how rich his background is. He carries at least three or four well-known social references in the States alone, let alone his history in Japan.
Have a good one.
It seems that the desire has the ability to run really decent games and yet football management games especially, are few and far between. There seems to be a demand for them but there just are not any decent ones out there. Ive tried MYFC, and RF2009 Manager but they are quite weak. The Android market has the potential to be as big, if not bigger than Apple but the choice of games in select areas are virtually non existent. I know everyone does not want the same thing but while I enjoy games that are arcade play, the simulation side is selective to say the least. Taking away a decent football management game, what about a horse racing game - nothing, a decent flight sim game - nothing. I know at the end of the day the Desire is a phone, but while cartoony games are enjoyable, some of us like something more in depth. It's just frustrating at the moment and I do appreciate there are developers working hard to bring us games and we, as an Android community, are grateful. I would just like to see a bit more for us strategists Take nothing away though, I think the Desire is an amazing phone and the market is growing at a tremdous speed so its all looking good.

You may be pleased to know that on the flight simulator front, x-plane for Android is on the verge of being released.
I have e-mailed the developer but cannot pin them to an exact release date but video demos of this are readily available if you google it.
It looks AWESOME!!
Thanks bobsie41, that's what I'm talking about. Showing the phone off to what it can play both visually and in depth. It really looks amazing, can't wait for that to be released If you can show me a football management game in that depth of capacity then I will be happy

im an SGS user but im in the camp of wanting a decent manager game for android, i would love somthing like an old CM game (i.e. 01/02) to be playable with a decent update.
ive been trying to find old ps1 games to run on psx4droid but the text on psx4droid always seems to be an issue so i cant get any of them to run well.
i think ill look into GBA and even Genesis/Snes if i have to just to pass the wait until we get somthing decent.

i loved the 5 inch real estate on the streak but the buggy android and a constant zeal to make it functional made me realise that i was spending too much time reading online guides/how to's/tips n tricks. i realised that i was trying to create a 'perfect' smartphone which as we all know could not exist as there is no such thing as perfection but only improvement.
i am a lawyer and whenever i was not in court i was spending time online to read about the ways i could make the android on my streak function that much better (LOL if i had spent that much time on my cases, i wouldve made some money). then suddenly it hit me. i was not enjoying my smartphone, i was just applying more and more tweaks on it so that i could enjoy it tomorrow but that tomorrow never came. this is my biggest gripe about android. it lacks the finesse which a good OS should have. compare it to wp7 and you will see what i mean. why should i spend all my time doing which should have already been done before releasing the software.
android has more than 80k applications in the market but half of them are cheap good for nothing fart apps or tip calcs or.......then from the remaining half almost a third do not run on streak (and i am sure its the same for everyone). such fragmentation only leads to frustration when you realise you have bought an application which cannot run on your device.
smartphones are consumption devices meant for enjoyment/recreation.
Welcome to Windows Phone 7, I like you am a convert from Android, I like you have stopped spending my days trying to find tweaks to "finesse" my phone, I like you now use my smartphone to help manage my days, consume media and keep in touch with the people that are important to me, no going back!

Iphone loses in more ways than android, hardware selection? 3.7 inch screen or bust, too smal for touchscreen only. It's completely bland which is hard to say when I use an OS which has a selling point on that very subject. It's apple which means it has to sync with a bunch of just awful software. There is a 100 percent lack of freedom in the market (not that WP7 is much better but they have allowed adult games.) Essentially they run the whole smartphone experience for you like you're 4 years old.

the markets aren't much different in principle. anyone can make (and be accepted) on android, harder on wp7, insane on ios.
I'm waiting for the video of a streak or gtablet being used as a phone (hilarious) as big as they are.
I wonder what law library apps you'll be looking for on wp7, or encryption to keep client info safe ?

Oh, I'm not the lawyer. I'm just a diehard phone addict who happens to have fallen in love with WP7. I used a streak for a couple weeks, had clearer sound than any other phone I'd ever had except for the venue pro. IT felt good against my ear, I didn't feel like I was going to drop it like most new phones. Iphones are too tiny for me... the screens are miniscule for someone with gamer thumbs. If they dolled up iOS a bit and put it on a bigger screen itd... well it'd be almost as good as WP7
Is it just possible that someone could like some aspects of Android (choice of handsets), but also some aspects of iOS (consistent, easy, and smooth)?

Precisely.
Can't describe how refreshing it is not to have to completely customize my damn phone. Never thought I'd say it, though as I enjoyed it somewhat.
Picked up the Focus with a strong expectation that I'd return it. Nope. Tried the Captivate, too, but preferred WP7. Might pick up a captivate to play with if I get the tinkering bug...
I mean I understand that it's to be released on both the Xbox and WP7 at the same time but really? That's it? I am thoroughly disappointed this time. Xbox has dug through mounds of **** just to make a name for itself and what has Windows Phone 7 shown in that department? I mean there's ilomilo and then theres iphone clones. It's so sad to see a first rate OS by a corporate giant turned into a third rate gaming platforms because they'd rather spend a huge budget on advertising what the phone can currently do rather than making that Xbox live tile appeal to a plethora of users who had hope in their hearts when they saw Xbox live integration and watched it be shat on with garbage like... well... half the stuff on the Xbox live WP7 marketplace. It's cool that you're getting the most popular iphone clone and a game I played on my beat up sega dreamcast a decade ago but really, where's the innovation?
I think it might be time to change your siggy...
I don't have an xbox, so I don't care so much about the integration, but I'm finding way more games I like on my phone right now than on android or winmo.
Currently working on twin blades, AC, I dig it, and The Harvest. Also play majong(sp) tiles and a couple rounds of spades as well.

Ah, R.I.P. Twin Blades. It was a great game unfortunately I've since swapped memory cards coincidentally on the day it vanished from the market and alas I am left without one of the defining games on the platform. I Dig It I havent really visited in some time due to the inability to save (not sure if that's still present), The Harvest has somewhat annoying controls, a virtual joystick makes more sense than a point and click diablo-esque phone game in my opinion, and AC has been on multiple other platforms as well as the other two games though perhaps not the exact same program. The astounding part though is regardless of the faults it's still the best. It's just that they've given us an amazing game or two (The Harvest really is amazing the controls just aren't for me) and then since have lacked innovation greatly. Where I thought they were going to try and stand alone it now looks like they're trying to be a "me too" platform. I did recieve an email from someone regarding a mobile version of Torchlight though and though they couldn't confirm or deny they did tell me it was an option they were exploring. That would be amazing as that game only takes like what? 140 megs on the xbox? Dull it down a bit and it could be a game changer for WP7.

always such informative and insightful posts. They add a lot to the conversation.
I'm starting to agree with you about all the new releases. Puzzle games have their place (especially on a mobile phone platform), but without more action titles, it makes it seem like XBox live is not really a serious reason for someone to get a WP7 as Microsoft would like people to think.
That said, I have actually really, really enjoyed the XBox Live games. I used WinMo and Android for a long time before WP7 and never really got into gaming on either platform but for some reason, I just started playing games on WP7 a lot. I don't have an XBox so the integration with XBox is not something I really care about. I like the achievements. It gives me something to play for.
The April releases will keep me satisfied for a while, but in my opinion, they need a lot more releases like those in April, not just every now and then.
edit: oh yeah, an afterthought... maybe chill out on the tower defense games. 1 is enough on the entire platform. It seems like every other game on the Marketplace is a freakin tower defense game. Not a big fan.
I guess you guys haven't seen the poker commercial on xbox live then? Its quite stupid.
You can play the game on both your console and phone.
Spoiler alert; its not the way you think it is. Integration my ass.

SPORTS GAMES! WTF!
Is there a single sports game on this platform? XBox may not have many either....but some sports games (i.e. one button swing type games) are made for mobile.
WP7 is lacking sports games something fierce.

I agree about the tower defense games, but the star wars one is actually quite fun...
We could definitely use some more games, but we are still getting them faster than android!!!
How do y'all like WP7? I'm still on WinMo because Garmin Mobile XT is awesome, particularly where there is no cellular coverage. Also, I do not own a laptop and do a lot of long emails on my phone when I'm not at home with my 70lb desktop and I'm irritated that I can't get a WP7 device with the exact same keyboard as my Rhodium and at least the latest Qualcomm 45nm goodness in it complete with Adreno 205, much less the upcoming dual Cortex A8 with independent clock speed and CPU voltage and Adreno 220. Why in the Sam Hill did M$ decide that only 65nm OG Snapdragon SoC's were going to go into WP7 devices?
I read a few reviews of the Euro-spec 7 Pro and it seems that HTC used a crappy LCD but not as crappy as the HD7's, and they somehow messed up the chassis of the Rhodium and the keyboard. I like that I can get giant batteries for these things and that unibody sh*t jus doesn't float my boat. I guess I'm just pissed that WP7 is locked to 65nm Snapdragon and irritated with HTC for messing with the landscape qwerty slider chassis and keyboard that they perfected with the Rhodium.
sure haven't said:

huh. most reviewers have said the 7 pro keyboard is the best keyboard since the tp2. Those tp2's won't last forever.
