I've been a huge Android fan since I ditched iPhone for N1, and the Galaxy Nexus is by far the best phone I've ever owned.
But there's one niggle about Android that drives me nuts and I can't see any possible UI reason why they do it this way. I hoped ICS would fix it to be more consistent, but it hasn't. It's when an app opens a session of a different app within itself.
For example... take a photo.. hit the thumbnail. It doesn't take you to the Gallery, it takes you to a thumbnail within Camera. Fine, I can understand that as a quick preview.
But now, hit that you want to edit it in, for example, PicSay. Or Tweet it. It will open the editor or twitter app. Except it doesn't. It opens it within the Camera. Want to leave an image to the editor, then go back an take another photo? You can't.
More annoying: tweet or email a web page with a comment. The mail or twitter app is brought up inside the browser. Want to check something on the web page to put into the message? You can't. It's impossible to flick back to the browser and look it up, because the message composition app is 'in front' of it. You're not taken out of the browser to the app you wanted so can't switch between the browser and your message composition.
I can't work out why it's done like this, I find it incredibly annoying. And now with the ICS recent apps list, if you hit home halfway through doing something like this the thumbnail for Browser will actually show Gmail, and it's the Browser and not Gmail you need to flick back to.
Why?

Related annoyance. Because each application maintains that "history" (so you can hit back to get all the way out), many apps don't include their own "return to main app" button. You can just hit back, right? Not always.
Take Google Music, for example. Other music apps as well, probably.
Perfectly normal use case:
1). You open it up go to the song listing, pick an album or playlist or song or whatever and start playing.
2). Then you do other things. Email or something, whatever
3). You suddenly decide that want to hear a different song!
4). You go to the notifications tray and click the music icon there (since it's playing music, it's an ongoing app).
5). It opens up the music app to the currently playing song
Music app is open - it should be easy to play a new song, right? Nope. How do you pick a new song? If you had opened the app from a normal music icon, you could hit "back" to go back to the main page - since that progression is saved in the history from when you originally opeend it. But when you clicked it from the notification dropdown, there's no history. When you hit "back", it will just exit back to the Home screen, with the music still playing.
I can't count the number of times I've opened up the music app from the notifications dropdown, hit back, had it exit, and had to re-open music from the normal launcher icon.
Conversely, Twicca (my favourite twitter app) maintains an incredibly detailed 'back' history.
So, hitting back can go Search results > other search results > direct messages > direct messages (because you refreshed) > replies > replies > replies > replies (because the last 4 times you used the app was to check replies) > home

What's funny is Samsung's Music app handles this situation perfectly! The back button has the expected behavior of taking you back to the album/song list from which you came.
Google does not fully understand UI/UX yet. Take the Market app for instance. Scroll down to your list of purchased but not installed apps and check out the last time say, WidgetLocker, was updated. Check its date, hit the back button and what should it do? It SHOULD take you to the spot in your app list you were at. What does it do? Takes you to the top of your "Installed" apps list. Leaving you to scroll all the way back down to your original position in the list.
Coming from an iPhone 4, I have to say that there are a lot of things that Android needs to fix/improve. UI/UX is one of them. Although ICS is a huge step to the right direction. Having said that, to avoid conflicts, I say that I absolutely love my rooted Galaxy Nexus!

I've been a Windows Mobile user for 5 or so years and I just today took my first plunge into Android with the Evo4G. I have always have a customer firmware flashed.
Now, I'm running stock Froyo and I need help! Please help me figure a few key things out:
How do I switch tasks???!!!?!
What is the best (power user / this community) way to kill certain apps? I see a few different app killers which one is the best?
I am used to a completely customizable home screen and I'm finding the Sense UI used on the Evo limiting. How do I change to the smaller version of the HTC clocks and etc? I haven't seen any of the custom ROMs out for the Evo utilize different homescreen elements.
Calender is a big pain! I am used to listing 1, 2, 3, or 4 appointments on my home screen with the date and time they are happening. I see an HTC widget for calender but it only lists my appointments. It doesn't which day they are occurring and I don't even think they are in order!! How do I change this? This is critical for me. I use my phone for work.
GMail. On my WM phone I used google's exchange servers to sync mail, appointments, and etc. On android is this all done in the background? Is my Gmail app preferable or the built in android mail app? OR the HTC mail app?
Can I set a different sound for email / sms / mms ?
Google voice. Is there a way to completely emulate google voice on my phone? For instance, every time I send a text message and receive a text message, can I set it to go through google voice without using the app?
I'm basically struggling with the best ways of doing simple things. Calender, task switching, and CLOSING APPS AFTER IM DONE USING THEM being the things I have the most problems with.
I tried searching for this stuff but it seems like everyone just assumes everyone else knows how to do this stuff.
Please help! Thanks.
How do I switch tasks???!!!?! Hold down the "home" key for a few seconds. your open programs will pop-up
What is the best (power user / this community) way to kill certain apps? I see a few different app killers which one is the best? Advanced task killer. i think it's free.

I haven't seen any of the custom ROMs out for the Evo utilize different homescreen elements. Touch and hold on the wdiget you want to change. drag it to the trash bin at the bottom. then hold the empty space and choose a new widget.

I use my phone for work. Go get pure calendar widget. it costs a couple bucks but absolutely worth it. this will solve your issue.
GMail. On my WM phone I used google's exchange servers to sync mail, appointments, and etc. On android is this all done in the background? Is my Gmail app preferable or the built in android mail app? OR the HTC mail app?the built-in gmail function under settings>accounts>gmail is flawless. use that.
Can I set a different sound for email / sms / mms ? You should be able to. go into messaging, hit menu>settings and scroll down for notification sounds. do this for email as well. then go to main phone settings>sounds>notification and change the default notification sound for everything else.
Google voice. Is there a way to completely emulate google voice on my phone? For instance, every time I send a text message and receive a text message, can I set it to go through google voice without using the app? sorry, i've got no clue on this one.
EDIT: P.S. contrary to the minority of a-holes here, we really ARE here to help. just ask. i'll help you with whatever i can.
for google voice. im not sure it works for sms/mms but once its installed (yes you have to install it) add a shortcut to your desktop for it. long press, add shortcut->google voice.
that will toggle the use of it for calls. if you do it report back for sms/mms
Pressing and holding the home button will only give you the last 6 apps you opened (regardless if they're still open or closed). You're looking for something like the switcher widget, which will give you a tray of apps that are still open, so you can return to them at any time. Switcher widget + quickdesk is a great combo.
As far as killing apps go, keep in mind that Android manages resourses differently than wm, and will shut down the app when those resources are actually needed. While just sitting in the background, the amount of battery and CPU they use is negligible.
+1 for pure calendar
For gmail, use the gmail app. It's much more functional than the other options and will still push email, calendar, and contacts in the background. Use the other email options for other POP3 or exchange accounts.

this is true. i suppose he could also use Power Strip, but that just allows you to open apps while in another app. it's not really an "open app manager"
+1 for fachadick's suggestion
I love Android Agenda Widget for the calendar. It is very similar to the today plugin calander from SBP on WM...best of all, it's free.

For the Google Voice SMS thing, when you install GV and then goto messaging it asks you if you want to use Messaging or Google Voice... choose Gv and set it as default.
Thanks for the replies, guys!
A short delve into the emulator in the developer tools reveals things like navigation that still hasn't officially been confirmed!
Here's what I've found so far:
Zune:
-There's a smart-dj feature
-You can create and save playlists
-There's a "related artists" and bio under the artist tab, great for discovering music
-Podcasts work well
-You can't "heart" songs (at least in the emulator)
-There's still no scrub controls
Bing & Maps
-Bing maps has voice-guided directions as expected
-You can show traffic on maps
-Still no landscape maps
-It's now possible to scroll the mini-map while the text directions are on-screen
-Bing music recognizes music like Shazam and clicking on the result will take you to zune marketplace
-You can now unlock the phone using the search button, apparently
-If you search for something on Bing that has an application equivalent; it will show you a link to the application within Bing.
Keyboard
-Keyboard prediction has been improved a lot:
It previously didn't correct misspellings of many short words like ar -> at, fir-> for and br-> be), now it does
It also now corrects it if you press a letter instead of space between two words e.g. it will suggest "I'm about" if you type imnabout or imnaboit, and will suggest "How are you" if you type "hownarebyou"
The keyboard also corrects common misspellings like Profesional -> Professional
-Keyboard tries to predict next word (as shown at 24th May event), e.g. If you type I, then "tr", it will suggest "tried", whereas in WP7 it will suggest nothing. This seems to work pretty well
IE
- Websites seem to render more accurately
- Websites can use GPS data for location
- Bing suggestions now appear when typing a search in IE as well
- Text still looks garbled when really zoomed out
- Tab animation has changed very subtly
General OS:
- Same colour themes as last time
- It appears you can't "press and hold" the back button in the emulator, meaning possibly we can't do multitasking, even in an unlocked emulator.
Camera
- No changes in general layout. There seems to be a software camera button in the camera app
Can't wait for an unlocked emulator!
Update: If you search for something on Bing that has an application equivalent; it will show you a link to the application within Bing. Picture at the end.
Update 2: Additions to the keyboard section about prediction
Update 3: There seems to be a software camera button in the camera app
Update 4: It appears you can't "press and hold" the back button in the emulator, meaning possibly we can't do multitasking, even in an unlocked emulator.
Update 5: The "my location" icon now has the same colour as the OS theme

Thanks. Updated with one more thing If anyone else has things to add, I will update the list
Thank you for the infos you provided! I was wondering if there's any chance to explain a bit how does the "smart DJ" option in Zune, work?
Can you move songs around freely and then create the playlist or not? How does it work?
Thank you for your time!
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work on the emulator. I'll let you know if I can get it working.
EDIT: To expand on that, it says "WE don't have enough info about this artist to generate a Smart DJ playlist"
"Bing music recognizes music like Shazam"

Who knows what "smart dj" option really is...
Anyway, thanks for your time and efforts!
On the zune player, the smart dj takes the song you are listening to, and creates a playlist of 25 or so songs that are similar to that song.

its kinda like Pandora, auto creates a playlist based on your taste with songs from your library and also marketplace if u have a Zune pass. The Zune desktop software has it and so did the Zune HD I m guessing.
And yeah Bing music looks awesome, maybe thats why Shazam decided to remove their app from the marketplace
Awesome work so far Robin.B! We're writing an article about this post right now.
From the 7.1 Beta Release notes:
"The task-switching user interface that accessed on physical devices by pressing and holding the back button, is not supported on the emulator."
I was looking forward to checking that out, too
One of the main Mango's features: IE now supports HTML5! And with hardware rendering and acceleration! This benchmark http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/performance/fishietank/ gives me about 25-26 fps in emulator. Wow, MS! Real device will render at least 50-60 fps
P.S. Still no Silverlight support in browser :-(
@ jmerrey and cbebop7
Ah, that is the thing I was hoping not to get as an answer... I hope you agree with me, that that is kinda useless.
It would be much better if one could rearange the songs in wished order, and then save that as an playlist (of course, with a possibility of editing that playlist).
Task Switching is accessed by pressing and holding F1 on your keyboard.
I'm running the emulator and was looking forward to trying a few things, but my PC keyboard doesn't work in the emulator. Is this normal?

How/where did you get the unlocked image?
In mango, if I use back button to reopen a app(mango supported), there is no annoying resuming, and it is pretty good. But if I try to reopen that app through app list or live tiles or toast notification, the app will be restart as though it has never been opened.
It's very inconvenient especially when I use a IM client. Why MS makes it like this???
Because it takes that as a relaunch which is convenient on most apps aside from games. However, it seems like you may not have found the task switcher (just assuming) if you hold the back button it pulls your 5 most recent tasks and allows for a resume.
The OP very clearly stated that the app switcher works fine. But if IM+ is already loaded and available in the app switcher, and you get an IM+ toast, wouldn't it make sense to just switch to the open instance of IM+, rather than killing that instance and reloading from scratch (which can take 20-30 seconds)?

It is an annoying feature of the way the OS works for sure. I have also noticed with IM+ (I think, might have been gchat) that if I get a toast and I am in mid-conversation, pressing back to fast resume doesn't always add the last message from the other person to the chat even though I have had the notification for it.
This is really something that app developers should be allowed to control, some sort of "reuse previously running instance" switch.

I know the 'task switcher', but when i receve a toast notification and click it, just relaunch the app takes long.Since the app is in the task switcher, why not resume it directly.

Nop. It's not.
For some stupid reason WP7 doesnt support multitask for third apps. Not even resume the instance.
If you want to resume the instance, you hold the back button and choose from the lame switcher. It takes so long that it is almost better to just re open the app.
Because it's so much clever you force the user to reopen the app every time he needs it instead of including a way to force close when it needs (like, I dont know, holding the card in the fast switch?). Just like iOS/Android does.
When you resume, you have to wait another 3~4 seconds to see the message.
I tested gchat and beejive for iPhone at the same time. Sent one message, opened from each toast notification (iOS 5). iPhone is about 6 seconds faster to display your message. Now take that to a conversation. Oh, you can use fast switch, yes. So its not 6 seconds, its 'just' 4 seconds faster to EACH message.
Mango didnt saved WP7. Not for me. It just killed all my hopes. Maybe Tango/Apollo?
I'm just waiting to iPhone 4S comes to my country to say bye to my WP7. Which is bad, because I love WP7, dont like iPhone, but hate Androids. Right now WP7 just get me frustated, so my next option is iOS ;/

I cannot believe how unintuitive Zune software is.
Just try to edit a playlist in any manner. F*cking impossible.
I have an existing playlist on my phone called "workout". I wanted to add some songs to it. Nope. Nothing doing. That is beyond the scope of what's possible with today's technology.
Right clicking does nothing. Oh you can drag the name of the playlist or individual songs around. But you can't drag them to anywhere. Just around the screen I guess for your own amusement before you release the mouse button and the little icon disappears.
So I open the Zune player on my phone (which doesn't recognize the album the songs are from... even though I edited the meta data in Zune software and f*cking told them what the album is), go to the song and select "save to playlist".
It asks me to name it. Uh, ok.
I go to the next song, select save to playlist. Asks me to name it again. Oh I get it, this is like DOS where we just name where we're putting it.
Let's go check on our new playlist shall we?
It's actually two playlists, and they contain the same songs. When you select "save to playlist", it just saves ALL the songs from that artist in a playlist. How f*cking useless is that?? There are ballads from that artist that I don't want coming up when I'm about to bench press my craptacular 10 pounds or whatever.
Is it just... IMPOSSIBLE, to create software that is straightforward and doesn't require a manual??
** - disclaimer - I went right from trying to figure it out to here. Didn't google for help or anything, because, above all, I shouldn't HAVE to. F*cking ridiculous.
I don't see how it gets any easier that selecting songs, hitting right click, and saying add to playlist
Edit: Agreed that playlist editing on Windows Phone is a joke though. It essentially just allows you to save your current Now Playing playlist
That would be great... however as I stated, right click brought no such options. And I right clicked EVERYTHING.

In your collection, you're telling me if you right click (on an artist, album, song, genre, pretty much damn near anything) that you don't get a context menu with some of the following options (and many more)?
Play
Play Smart DJ Mix
Sync with XXXX
Add to Playlist
Add to burnlist
I don't understand the problem. It works just like adding songs to your phone. If you are in the Playlists tab, you can click and drag down to your phone...in the lower left...or right click and add to phone. If you are anywhere else, you can drag songs down to your Playlist...it's right down in the corner next to your phone or burn to CD...or you can right click and add to playlist. You can do this with individual songs or an album or artist.

my points exactly,I don't understand the difficulty. I never edited a playlist in Zune PC software. I made them entirely on my phone but I saw the playlist option there.
I'll explain what I'm looking at right now, since you people think I'm blind or have selective vision.
I'm in Zune software. In "Phone", "music"... and I don't even see the songs I want to add to the playlist (the new ones I added to the phone yesterday). They're not showing up. HOWEVER I was just out with the dogs, listening to them, so I know they're there.
BUT, just for sh*ts and giggles, let's try this wonderous right-click.
Ok I've selected a song. Here is the context menu:
-copy to my collection
-delete from my phone
I am assuming I have to first copy songs to my PC (as when I click on a song that's on my PC, yes I see the "add to playlist"), then put them into a playlist. Well that's intuitive. Makes perfect sense. Why make it easy? Why make it easy when you can make it plodding and confusing.
None of that matters however since the Zune software doesn't even see the songs that are on my phone. So I can't copy them to my PC even if I wanted to.
And I'm not technically challenged. I've been a somewhat "tech" guy since I was a kid in the early 90's. I have a windows mobile device that I have enjoyed installing Android on (Omnia II), I set up our home network to share videos from PC's to XBox's and back (which is also incredibly "straightforward"). I know my way around the basics.
Zune software is flawed and hard to use. F*cking designers should understand that simplicity is key. Their OS that uses Zune software has incredibly easy folders/tree system. So what do they do? Change all the things! Moronic.
--edit--
And I still haven't even tackled how to edit my current playlist to delete some songs out of it.
The songs should've sync automatically. In "my collection", do you have "recent" selected?

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I'm in there now... and I don't see a "recent" word anywhere.
Is that an option as in "show recent"?
Or is it just an area that shows recent activity?

Also say you bought some songs directly on your phone from Zune then connect your phone to the PC software, the new songs will sync to your local collection automatically. You just go to Collection and sort albums by date added.
The new songs/Albums will be listed first. Also as I mentioned if you create an autoplaylist for your recently added songs, you can find them here.
Editing playlists is best done in the Zune desktop player collection area rather than Phone -> Music. The latter simply shows you what is on the device and gives you the option to delete some freeing up space.
between zune and itunes I dont know what is worse of a bloated POS!
I hope this is the correct place to announce the release of my first Tizen App : MultiTimer Pro!

The app is a timer app to compensate for the very limited stock timer app by Samsung. With MultiTimer Pro you can create mutliple timers and store them, or run them in parallel, as you like.
It is available at the Galaxy Store for 0.99$ and I would appreciate all feedback and feature suggestions!

Great app, i think its rare to see people making things for this eco-system.
one suggestion is the addition of widgets.
also maybe a way to add icons from google of something like that?

Yes but the OS is so great, there should really be more devs
Widgets is a good idea, I will take a look into that one! Custom icons is noted aswell but I am not sure if that is really usable on the tiny screen but let's see
Hi,
Nice app, I use timer all the time (and other app Timerro bug since update to Tizen 4)
I see some bugs on your app the "Previous page" (and also "Next page") open a windows like when you would add another timer in place of come back to previous (or next page). It is a window like if we want edit a timer with name "Previous" with blank field for color and time and a button "Delete"
EDIT : after trying to return to the previous or next page my timers order are lost and the app arrange timers on a Ramdom ? way...

Hey,
Thanks for your feedback! I can reproduce the issue.
I will fix it ASAP, but unfortunately releasing updates currently takes over a week because Samsung has such a slow approval proces... Sorry for the inconvenience!
Fix is submitted, also now with default Timer names.
Let's hope it goes through fast...
Widgets up next
Dark Mode
Still waiting for the first update to be approved...
In meantime, I implemented a Dark Mode as a lot of users complained about the bright colors and the low contrast

Dark mode looks great. Which version number will that be, currently I see 1.1.4? Any idea when this will become available?
I've been waiting for over a week for the last update to be approved and you cannot submit a new one while the previous one is under review... But it finally got approved today, and the dark mode version was finished last week but I couldn't submit it until now. It will be version 1.2 and I hope this one will get approved faster but it's out of my hands... Maybe a week?
It took over a week, and now they found a super weird reason to reject the app update.
(Clicking the button on the top right doesn't close the app because it is used for start/stop of the timer, and thus there is no way to close the app directly. I now added a button to the UI to close it... let's see).
So "bug" fixed and resubmitted... fingers crossed it won't take another week....

It is one reason I not like use Tizen Watch. Mainly for timer or stopwatch, just a button to close an app and stop timer or stopwatch (and lost it).....

Do you like being able to use the hardware button to start/stop the timer or would you prefer it closing the app ?

I prefer "Start/Stop" But surely not really close the app, limit send app to foreground but not close. I have a "Stopwatch pro" app, il I press the upper button the stopwatch close and end the count, not acceptable.

Good I think it is usefull aswell. I kept it inside MultiTimer Pro so you can start and stop the timers with the button.
I think it is stupid to have 2 Hardware buttons and both are used for minimizing/closing an app.
Dark Mode
Finally......the dark mode is available!
Updated today from the first version and not worked. Press the app icon do nothing.
Uninstalled and installed again and it works.
Found a bug. I create few timers on 2 pages. I start timers (2 timers) on first page, after I go on the second page, I start other timer and if I want return to the first page with click to the "previous page" Icon, the app stop/crash and all running timers are stopped.

Hello,
this is a known bug, aswell as an issue with deleting timers when you have more than one page.
However, these are already fixed in version 1.5.0 which is already submitted and currently under review by Samsung.
It should be available by the end of the week!
In the coming days a new version will be available that adopts the new OneUI !
Here are some screenshots, I hope you like the new design ( the old ones are still available through the settings )
Also a couple of new icons were added and more are to come!
I'm using the S3 with AOD mode (One UI V1.0). At count end, the app vibe but the screen keep in sleep mode (AOD) and you can not see the Timer end Just feel the vibe (or not....) but do not know why until you unsleep the watch to see the Timer end screen

Hello,
I normally don't use the AOD so I did not realize there was a problem, thank you for reporting I will try to reproduce it and fix it!
