[Q] MIUI ROM - Best English version - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been using MIUI-XJ and just love MIUI. However I have found that there are other versions of the ROM in english including an official one. Can anyone please tell me what the difference are and which one is best to use?

I've been using the MIUI build from MIUI.us. After I ran into some awkward things with MIUI XJ, which was my first MIUI, too, I switched to MIUI.us and ran it without problems for many months.
I don't remember exactly because it's such a long time ago, but I think what I didn't like about MIUI XJ at the time was that I ran into some chinese language from time to time and that I couldn't get the updater to work.
With MIUI.us everything was always 100% translated and the updater worked, too. I also liked that you don't have to make so many choices between different versions. There is just 1.
My battery life was quite poor with the standard kernel, that's why I went with Tiamat.
Was very satisfied and never had any problems.

used miui englands rom for 2 months etc but found browser could not cope with flash etc however English translation is almost full except on lock screen , now using miui us as i found it was overall consistent with performance in comparison to miui England rom . just remember bits of chinese or untranslated bits of the rom do occur and no rom is fully English.

Thank you guys for the point to right direction. Does the US ROM has to be used in US? or will it work ok with UK carriers??

miui us cater for both gsm and cdma devices , just because it says us it doenst mean your device is not supported .
if i am not mistaken the uk desire uses a sim card right (then ure gsm)? if it does choose the gsm rom on there download page , if your phone does not use a sim card then ure using a cdma phone ( cdma has the sim card etc built in i think) however i doubt it cause realy i find cdma phones only in the us in my opinion .just to let you know the setup wizard on this rom when it starts is choppy / slow but once you get past it everything else works well and smooth .
another good english miui would be australia's one but i found the page to be a little unorgniosed and the roms were hard to find , miui au is doing an ics build but doesnt have all the features of gb builds .(off topic )
good luck and happy flashing ...

Thank you for the guidance.

How do you change kernel. I am not getting a day out of my phone when on MIUI. That is why I am currently using Mildwild.

Flash the zip like a rom. No wipe. manu 1.4 is good for CM7 / 720p Driver based AOSP roms.

does anyone have any feedback towards miui-au (gb version) ? I'm currently using xj and not sure if there's much difference between xj, us and au?

I have been using MIUI.US for several months now and just recently a few areas have been coming up in Chinese.. mostly the calendar and the browser. I can't seem to find fully translated versions of either without pulling from older versions.
Otherwise I am very happy with MIUI
Also, not sure yet who is at fault (I haven't tried finding out) but I cannot get Titanium backup to properly connect with Market in MIUI, but works fine on Sense ROM. Just FYI, may or may not affect you.

i'm using miui us's current gb build , the dialer eg when you type a random number it asks you if you want to sms or add the number this bit is in chinese .
older builds seems to have less Chinese popping up etc

i've heard some apps etc from the market weren't working to well with xj.
us and au cater for there perspective country's , i found au's rom inconsistent in some area's eg when you press the home button going to the home screen ,although not a major issue it is something i noticed . with us rom i found the startup wizard to be choppy but after that a really smooth rom none of that inconsistancy found in au's rom .

I use galnet Miui. They have weekly alpha/beta builds as well as their stable builds. I've had no problems in a few updates and it is running fine on my SGS2. I've only tried this and the official Rom though.

rom selection help please

i recently rooted my phone and flashed arhd, and got some great help and advice from here regarding which rom to start with.
Now i am see`ing new roms, updated versions and am struggling to choose again - from what i can tell there are 3 x varieties - one that has sense, one without sense and a miui version, and then in al lthe threads of the seperate varieties they all seem to have the identicle set up - and same issues - most recent being no wifi connection, so an updated rom is released.
do people really flash a rom daily? or do you just stick with one that works?
i would like to have some sense 3 bits, but every rom seems to be sufferign the same problems and they all look the same except a different kernal is used, how do i choose?
Im after using a good few of the roms now and I was using CM7 since it came out. Yesterday I changed to honeysense HD and I must say I love it. I use SPB 3D shell launcher so it looks basically the same as alot of the other ones anyways but there are a few nice little changes in it that I love. You should seriously think about trying it. You wont be sad you tried it.
It's pure personal preference.
I have worked my way around judt about all the different flavour ROMs but my fav choice is resting solidly on the COREDROID Rom.
Just take some time and try each one I am sure you will find one you like. Ad for flashing all the time I did initialy but I settled down and the ROMs get better each time a new version is released.
Have fun

I have just started getting into this and for the first few weeks flashed pretty much most roms that were available. I then found the MIUI rom and fell in love with it.
Coredroid is my favorite one of the sense type roms
It is down to personal preference and best thing to do is try a few of em and I'm sure you will find one that you like

thats excatlly what i was going thru. I'm the kinda guy who flashes almost daily
I have had a run of almost all of them.
If you want to have pure sense 3 experience then RCmix kingdom is the one you could go for.But as it is still in beta/development stage you should expect few bug's here and there.
If you dont want to have bugs and have sense 3.0 parts (lockscreen,camera....) then i personally suggest lee driod or andriod revolution rom's with sense 3.0 addon's they are both stable rom's with very few issue's in them.
I'm currently am on RCmix 5.9 (Old school ) with sense 3.0 addons in it with lee's kernel.
On the other side Miui freshly squeezed is the best you could find which is close to sense like experience with the power of CM 7. Give it a try i'm sure it will tempt you to forget sense for a while
Hope this help you out
Happy flashing

DUDE!! If you have DHD then the ROM(s) to follow are LeeDroid and RCMIX Kingdom.. At the moment both have released newer versions of their ROMS so you just need to see which ROM works best for you and of course for your device ;o)
Lee has a mixture of Sense 2.1 and 3.0 and RCMIX Kingdom has Sense 3.0 but after flashing RCMIX's Rom it says Sense 2.1..I THINK it's still a bug BUT his ROM is superb.. The battery life might be a bit annoying but thank GOD for the extra battery ( if your SP provided you with an extra .. of course )..hehhe!
MIUI should not be option on your DHD cos I personally think that the phone was built around Sense and I don't think that MIUI has any Sense version on it..
MIUI might look super cool but try LeeDroid OR RCMIX's first before you move to MIUI..>>> OR VICE VERSA ;o)
Hope my 2 cents comment helps you ;o)
Spent my first week changing and trying different ROMs.
Started worth arhd since it has great doc for newbies.
Then, tried all other sense rom and stayed a while with lee droid.
Switched to cm7 then to mdj cm7.1. Stayed there a long time. Close to a month.
Then back to sense since I want panorama! And tried tb and mdj vivo.
Now on vivo.
Think I'll stick with mdj.s rom.

if you want sense 3 then i recommend you ioos rom.
cause its true sense without any extra's.
so far no issues for me.
Had the same problems. I tried virtually all roms, from sense to no sense. Like IOO sense 3 rom so much. CM 7 & MIUI are just not my thing. The best rom in my opinion right now is VIVO. Its very smooth, the battery life is amazing, minimal bugs report. But at the end its a matter of personal choice.

I have been using Honeysense HD since i rooted 2 weeks ago and found it to be very pretty without many problems the only thing i cant seem to sort out is my battery life 100% at 10.20pm put phone on standby and at 5am i'm at 75%. Thinking i'll try another ROM.
I've tried ARHD, MIUI, LeeDroid and CM7. After all this I choose to switch between ARHD and MIUI freshly squeezed edition, but I still prefer ARHD for its stability and good battery life.

and i think if you have a red lens defy then u should try MS2Ginger 2.1 u will have 720p video record : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140839
Hope I helped

I use MS2Ginger 2.0 (Defy with red lens), works great for me, especially if you want 720p recording/playback.
MS2Ginger if you like blur , or CM7 smooth and fast without any Force close problems i almost tried every rom out there 2.2.2 froyo is also fast and works fine .
PS: dont ever flash 2.3.4
i used to have cm7 until recently. cm7 is getting boring and miui has caught up with cm7 as far as bug fixes are concerned, but it's much more eye pleasing
try wajkiui, without the ics add-on first, and see if you like it.

cm7 boring? boring as rock-stable?
I would try again if wifi is fixed and battery drain...
jboogie is based off cm7 by quarax. pretty decent.
barebones is the ultimate cm mod with the "bare essentials"
cm7 is fast, and as far as customising it there are LOADS of themes, personally i like the way this one looks
miui is nice, recently it has got much more smoother and there are many variants. wajk,d something :S and so on
(personally i like the galnet miui but waiting for the next update before jumping up and down and trying to convert people.)
ms2 ginger and moto ginger are based off the stock gb from moto and there are soo many nandroids of the same(stock gb from moto for the defy plus)in the dev thread. only plus point of ms2ginger over the rest is the 720p recording and its awesome (but only to view on the phone, on the computer its a totally different story)
cm9 is still kicking in the alpha stage but at the moment looks the most promising.
at the end of it, which ever rom you like should be the one you pick. oh and be careful, trying not wrecking your phone! lol
no one here can be held responsible if anything happens to your phone but if there is an issue, there are many awesome people who are waiting to help!!
any way happy modding!
well said... but the stock froyo of India 3.4.3-36-1.7 is the most stable for me...
MS2GINGER for me ... 720p recording and playback and most importantly the battery backup ... this is the rom with the best battery life for me :]

lol....i might have to eat my own words actually
after testing a few variances of miui based roms, ie, wajkiui, dsj ics miui and galnet miui, i still went back to cm7 because those roms are still not as stable and smooth as cm7.
then i found that many of those eye candies i found on miui based roms are there in cm7 anyway. i just wasn't into tweaking my phone before until i got into miui roms.
anyway i'm currently testing ms2ginger 2.1 for green lens and mtotoginger 2 i found the best thing about these roms are the battery life. most roms i tested so far consume about 0.4-0.6 % per hr when the phone is in deep sleep. the motoginger 2 rom (preferred over the ms2ginger) uses about 0.3% per hr when deep sleep and on maximum battery saver mode!
I really have to agree with CM7. I've been running it for weeks, without any random reboots and lots of usage.
It is just the safest bet out there.
Also consider try WajkIUI ICS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161110
I bet you will like its smooth faster than ever and the thing is stability
Im my point of view Wajk is one of the best devs 4 defy
I've used Cm7 for about 3 months, and I have to say, it's really stable. But I couldn't figure out why the built-in ADW Launcher was so laggy, but the ADW from market wasn't. But in fact, I didn't really cared about ADW, because I've used LP. There's no other Launcher on Earth which is that smooth, stable and far away from annoying gimmicks like those freaky transition effects from Go Launcher. After 3 months cm7 got very boring for me. So I decided to test some of the other ROM's postet here. Ms2Ginger was kind of overloaded and I don't like the color of the settings menue. Wajkiui was a variety of a MIUI Rom but without the MIUI Launcher. The last one I tried, was the MIUI Pikachu Edition. And It feels like much smoother then other MIUI Rom's, more stable and settings to play around So, I use MIUI Pikachu for about 2 months and I don't think I'll change the ROM until there's a final Version of CM9-Jordan.

Yea, its a german Rom, but it suports english, too. Im just comparing it with stock MIUI and Galnet-MIUI. I cant see any great differences except of the theme and Bootanimations
The main difference of the Pikachu edit. is the app called "Flag-configer". With this app, you can change installation parameters and app contents BEFORE you flash the ROM. MIUI Pikachu is the only ROM which is supported by the Flag-configer, actually I'm not sure if it's the only supported ROM. For now, the GALNET and WAJIKU can't be configured by this app.

i tried cm7 and currently on Wiui... have to say they r fast n solid! but as i am always outside w/o wifi... thus my data always on... the battery eats 15%/hr even when i am doing nothing with it n always in my pocket!!!
therefore i can say i really enjoy my defy when i m at home(wif wifi)... but once outside... i have to ration its use in case battery is flat when i have urgent call to make!!!
any rom out there to fix this problem?

[Q] Which ICS ROM is the best?

And by that I mean most advanced. I'm the Sense loving guy, but I've heard a lot of good things about ICS. I'd like to try it out, but honestly I can't figure out which of the few existing ROMs to choose. I'm aware of that most of them are still in the alpha-beta phase, but I hoped someone could help me pick one. Or is it better to just wait for Sense 3.6 ROM?
I can vouch for the Sandvold ICS (Bet 0.3.6). I have been running it on my Desire for several days now. If you use Titanium Backup, be careful restoring too much of the system data (I successfully restored the SMS/MMS stuff, but didn't bother with anything else). I also had to restore my APN settings to default to get my mobile data to work (Settings->More->Mobile Networks->Access Point Names->Menu->Reset to default).
I can also confirm that partictioning your SD card to provide an sd-ext works along with a2sd (including the Dalvik Cache) - the the Desire has a ridiculously small amount of internal ram.
Haven't had any issues at all.
Damian
i can recommand BCM b0.3.3 (Bravo CM9) rom which you find here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1403113
using it for days now and semms to be very stable. i came from the sandvold rom. in my opinion the cm9 rom is a bit faster than the sandvold rom.
i deleted some apps to fit the rom in data++ hboot. but i think app2sd works fine with this rom
i'm using BCM too for a while now, very stable.
I have had a strange wifi problem (the wifi router on chanel 13 hasn't been seen by phone, the one on chanel 7 without problem) fixed with wifixmanager.
In my opinion, Sense is not needed dead freight.

Hello!
I have installed the BCM b0.3.4 today. Although it makes a good impression, it seems to drain the battery. No idea what it is about, but the phone is hot and its CPU work with its maximum frequency.

New Sandvold build is the tits, I'm surprised at how far they've come, tried the bcm build as per recommendation of people here but battery died way too fast and wasn't as stable.
I am also on Sandvold. I have it running for 2 days now and haven't come across a single bug until now.
At first it was very slow and laggy, but after 2 hours or so (I really don't know why. 2 hours for everything loading at first boot?) it became all smooth.
The only thing that REALLY REALLY annoys me is that I am stuck with 5 homescreens, when I only need 2 or 3.
ATTENTION!
Sandvold's ROM came with data roaming enabled per default!
If you live close to the border you should check that setting before entering your SIM card PIN.
I've tried them both. Sandvod's version is much better, no bugs for me so far
I've been using Sandvold's rom for a while now. Newest version is excellent. Plus the gallery actually works with it!
Also you can change the battery indicator from this thread. I'm currently using v.4.

ICS & JB Speed vs Oxygen..

Hey all..
For those praising the latest ICS and JB roms for their speed, have you ever been on Oxygen 2.3.2 ? That is worth saying it's flying..
I thought the time had come to switch to android 4 on my desire.. But after dozens of tries of different releases, it never comes near the speed of my daily (modded) Oxygen rom..
Thought I would share this to see if I am doing something wrong or if there are people who share the same feeling..
Last.. I would like to clarify that I don't want to disrespect the developers of the roms like Sandvold, Elk759, Nikez,.. I appreciate their work very much, but I don't understand the reviews from others users, especially about speed..

Since Oxygen development has been discontinued awhile ago, is there any reason not to use it? Is it still based on the latest aosp code from Google, or has there been some important security updates that are missing from Oxygen? I'm also back using Oxygen after trying ics a few times. There was always some problems. And CM 7.2 allways reboots if I have walking navigation on, and I turn the screen off for a while to save some battery... With Oxygen everything works very snappy.

Oxygen development stopped a while ago indeed, there is an update by roalex that dates from april/2012
so thats pretty recent.. it also implements apps to sd-ext or data2sd in the framework, if you want it..
(i use the oxygenr2 hboot, gives me 330 mb.. more than enough)
Grtz
I really liked that Roalex version. Swype to clear notifications is alot smoother, ics animations are nice. But, standard apps to sd doesn't work properly. You can move apps to sd just fine, but you can't move them back. That's not a big problem but I just don't like roms that add something, and while doing that also break some standard functionality.

I agree with the speed of Oxygen Rom and would prefer it over any rom but right now I'm too dependent on CM7's tweaks its hard for me to go back to Oxygen.
via xda app
What tweaks..?
Everything under CyanogenMod settings.
Lol.. Very informative..
Flash the rom if you haven't and you'll literally get lost with all the settings available on the rom. It sacrifices a bit of speed compared to Oxygen but still a lot faster than any other rom out there.

I downloaded the rom, changed the launcher to latest holo launcher, added INT2EXT and done loads of work in UOT Kitchen and when the rom is installed uv got all the Cyanogenmod settings to play with. U wont be disapointed coz theres just so much u can do with it. Or.... u can just leave the rom as it is and its still great

Ics themed and heavy tweaked

Since I am using Oxygen_R2 hboot for maximum data size, so CM7 is never an option for me.

Rom suggestions for a significant other?

Greetings everyone.
I would like to root and install a new ROM on my girlfriend's Incredible 2. Now normally I would experiment myself but since it is not my own phone I will not have the opportunity to go flash crazy and try everything. As such I would like to get some recommendations. The main thing would be speed and stability. I do not know what she has done to her phone I just know that it is stock something. I am also unsure of what root method to use but that is simply due to the fact that I haven't been able to check anything yet. I just want to get some groundwork done before I jump in. She is always using her phone so I figured it would be nice to make her experience more enjoyable. Thanks in advance!
Edit:
There wouldn't be something as beast as the Decks reloaded ROM on the Evo would there? That is essentially what I would like to flash for her. Something ridiculously stable that has all the tweaks that I would need to add in. If not just let me know what the most stable rom is and what tweaks I should include as I flash for the lady.
for a good overview of available roms, kernels, radios, tweaks, and s-off guides you might start here
I think you're going to have to use the tacoroot method. that's what I did and I had the most current verizon updates. I just flashed chilly beans pd rom last night and it seems great. incredibly paranoid android I hope that helps
I love paranood but all the tweaks may overwhelm her. Dkstunnas global cm9 ROM has everything working and is fast, viper ROM is the best sense ROM in my opinion, and I also love gingerbread miui. Tazz patriot and macrodroid also have a nice sense 3.6 ROM named Arctic ascension, which is a little faster than venom but maybe less visually awe inspiring, I also made a descended version of that ROM but it is extremely stripped down (made for speed). All the ROMs I mentioned are completely functional and stable, except paranoid, which the newest version doesn't have a working front facing camera, but watch it, I'm sure chilly will get it worked out, he's a good dev, hope I've given you a small idea of what some of my picks are like...

Are you doing this for her or for you? Does she want it rooted? If not, leave it be. If she is happy with it then adhere to the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" line if thinking. If she does want it rooted, which type of rom does she want? Does she like sense and prefer not to have to learn her way around a new type of os? If so, skyraider Zeus is really good. Also, nits has some good gb sense roms. If she wants to try something new cm7 is fast and stable. As Jeremy said, gingerbread miui is great, just be careful with themes. Always backup before changing themes as some of them will lock your phone up and force you to restore a back up. It isn't common but I found several that did it. If she wants everything working with no bugs or random restarts, stay away from ics/jb at least until (if) we get source. If she is daring and can work through those issues without freaking out, the ones Jeremy mentioned are sweet. Pacman is one of my favorite roms ever, I just had some bugs that pushed me away for now. And they may be more phone related than rom. Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone. From my browsing of this forum i think I will just let her pick between skyraider zeus, team venom, magnolia and Gingerbread miui.
I believe these roms to have a good balance from my quick skimming.
Are these the correct links?

For OP, concur with what others above already said ... search for both speed & stability involved compromises in balancing out on a rooted custom ROM since you are on XDA searching ...
1. There are 2 stock Sense Rom based on VZW's OTA releases, one by AndyBones with additional tweaks/add-ons and a newer one by CS, stripped of bloatware (she isn't going to mess with NFL or CityKids ID, yada yada) Put TB on it and update Play Store, etc. and once it's done updating the Apps, you are good to go - both maintained full GSM functionality and if you get it unlocked officially by Big Red, you can truely made it a global phone, insert a local prepaid Sim card & have inexpensive voice calling rates everywhere instead of using its partner's Vodafone Sim.
2. Next up is the Nit's Stock Sense v5.0.m-ext4, that's highly finished & polished, everything works with numerous options and it is equal to SkyRaider's Zeus v1.3 rom, both can be overclocked for speed in trading off some battery life - still going to give you a full 20 to 30 hours day of heavy use depending on Apps running, and in the case of DW's identical DI2 running SR Zeus, typically 3+ full days of standby with minimal voice calling/SMS and little or no 3G/WiFi browsing. Installed SRZ on her's since it was released 15 months ago and trouble-free, never froze and zero maintenance. I run between Stock Sense v5 and SRZ and still indecisive, switching every so often - especially when I'm traveling as I use GSM bands for non-US local calling, no re-programming or *#*# codes or menu to cycle thru. I keep copies of CWM's backup on the devices and in cloud storage in case of restoration, but it's been good. Update the kernels and to the newer radios once it's running, and you have a trouble-free device, set-n-forget - switched to a smaller (4 x 1) widget for the clock & weather display on the homescreen and I'm happy.
BTW, I have the newest Google Apps like Currents, Play Book & Play Magazine, etc. running on these Roms - when I don't have my true tablet, the Nexus 7 running JB 4.1.2 with me.
3. CM7's is good, simple & fast and good for changing things, haven't "play" with CM9 global ones lately - apparently most of the issues with camera, bluetooth & minor bugs are smoothly out. Tazz/MD's Sense 3.6 ROM is newer and is functional and refreshing - battery life isn't as good as older GB roms, as I recall. Be prepared for minimal tech support for you loved ones.
4. Nit's masterpiece, Team V's Viper Rom is the newest/hottest and best preview of JB/4.x for the DI2, I like it - TB restore from older GB and other roms might or might not work, depending on the Apps, it's best to do a fresh & clean install after full/deep wipe first. If it wasn't for the exclusive CDMA only or GSM only Rom , set by the initial Aroma installation & somewhat "fair" battery life - I would probably use it as my daily. Once (a big IF) HTC & VZW release kernel sources/codes or rollout ICS updates - serious development will resume as everything is now ported over from other/leaked sources. Paranoid's Rom by Chilly looks good, developer's work with the Nexus 7 set a benchmark that's not easy for others to follow/exceed - I haven't check it out myself but I'm sure it's excellent.
Thanks for the heads up! She has been complaining about how slow her phone seems to be lately so I figured it was a good excuse to root. I didn't see your post until just now, but those rom suggestions seem great! When I did show her a couple of screens she liked the look of MIUI best. Is the link I posted earlier a stable enough version for her? Or should I be looking at a different thread?

Miui variants has been around for a long time - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1830675 - I haven't flashed or use one lately since the HTC Eris days, LOL but from the thread posts, it looks good enough for me, if you like it - go for it. Just backup always and if ... just restore or flash a different one, go back-n-forth - trials and errors work for me all the time (well, almost.) Enjoy.
The most stable miui is the gb 1.12.9. I think that is the right number. If you are using clockwork mode go into Rom manager and download it. There are 2, the other is 1.30.9 it something like that. Most people say that one wasn't as stable as the previous build. If you use the gb Rom get Aero's .7 kernel. A lot of people like the ics build but it may have stability issues that someone not wanting to wipe cache or go through fixes would want to deal with.
Maybe it's 1.12.9 and 1.12.30, I don't remember for sure, but you don't want the one with 30 in the number.
