I use wifi on my laptop... because its connected to my phone... via wifi hotspot
But yeah, I never turn on wifi and I have 0 use for wifi calling.

I don't know about you, but my Wifi at home is on a 110mbit cable modem. Beat that with your "4G" HSPA+
Wifi also uses less battery, and anything you do on wifi doesn't chew up your monthly Gigabyte allowance.

your wifi is slow not because of the fact that youre on wifi, but because your own ISP's provisioned line is slow - thus, you have a slow internet package with your provider, either that or your having intermitten speed issues with the line. and there is no "100%" unlimited data on 4g/hspa+, max is 5gbs then youre throttled to be on edge. but really, i have the 2gb on 4G package and i can barely use a gig on a monthly basis from usual web browsing. i guess i shall start streaming some movies on the phone..

Most of the time I'm at college and wifi is free so why not use it? Besides here the max down is 3mbs and wifi is 10. At home we don't have a dedicated internet connection so I tether to all my devices there.

My Wifi is faster than my data.

Wifi is faster than my data. I dont want to get throttled because of how much data i use. Data uses more vattery because its onstantly searching and switching from hspa+, gms ,etc.
Message relayed from the dark side.

My wifi is faster than 4g. Also, my block has terrible service (previously had Verizon, it was horrible, my neighbors have sprint, it sucks too), so I use wifi calling because my wifi signal strength acts as my signal, so I get all calls, texts & don't drop calls.
the white unicorn.

It's typically better to use WiFi whenever it's available at your leisure.

Because when i play modern combat 3 online it requires wifi

- wifi uses less battery
- its free.. doesnt use up my monthly 5gb so i dont get throttled
- ground level apartment doesnt get good service ..sometimes no service.. so wifi + wifi calling is almost necessary
- wifi is faster than 4g (unless you have crappy internet like OP must have)
- Having my phone on the same wifi network as my Samsung TV ( with built in wireless ) allows me to use my phone as a remote control for the TV and also i can send pictures , music, videos , whatever from my phone wirelessly to my tv

When did wifi become free? Am I missing something here? If your at home and your using a wireless router to use the wifi off, then is it really free. I can understand being out and using it but at home your paying your ISP and tmobile. I agree data speeds at home are usually faster but I get 12 and sometimes 16mb at home on tmobile. Currently tethering on my plan and it beat my ESP in downloads. Keep in mind my old plan with Comcast was 12mb and my most recent was only 1-1.5mb.

actually Tmobile has a10gb package for the extreme users..at the end of my Billing cycle Im usually at 4.5GB of use so I downgraded from the 10 GB package. I have average download speeds of 13mb and 4mb up with this phone way better then the 3 down and.50 up my sensation got in the same place.

I use wifi when available. Doesn't count against my data plan and my home internet is much faster then my home 4g data connection.
Why would anyone use 4g when wifi and a fast internet connection is available?

Yes , it's free. I have a fast internet connection for my home network and it doesn't cost me any more to use wifi for my phone and tablet. I'm paying for the internet connection any way so why not take advantage?

i use wifi every chance i get! more stable and saves more energy.

Really OP? I get 20mb down at home and 15+ when at bdubs or starbucks or any similar place. It's 2012 man, who doesn't love free interwebs without eating at our data plans?

I'm usually at 6gig and I live on this thing.
no 4g around me though.
I used to use about 1-2 GB on 3G, but then I got a wifi router for home.
Now I barely use 200 MB. Plus moving files between PC and phone w/o cables @3 MB/s is pretty nice.
My idiot friend said he used over 300gb one month because he was downloading ps3 games.... Idiots like that are the reason we won't have unlimited forever.... Did you hit 11GB through phone usage or through tethering? My home internet provider in my building went out of business so I had to start tethering and I hit 18GB of 4G. From what I understand, Sprint doesn't care as long as you aren't roaming. Before tethering, I would go through about 3-4GB a month.

300GB? I think that would be a pretty good reason on their part. He's using 20-30X the amount of data the average data hog here uses (or admits to using). And that's 300X the amount of data the average user (people who live in the 21st century and have wifi at home) uses.
That's obnoxious even compared to other abusers!
Other than illegally downloading warez, I can' think of a single legitimate way a normal person could go through that much bandwidth. Even streaming Netflix... that's 300+ movies (from my experience watching data use on the phone). The hogs here who stream Pandora every day even stay in the low 2 digits of data use.
That idiot friend deserves to get booted!
I hit around 1.3GB last month on 4G (Usage reset yesterday). And I used around a Gig or so on 3G. Im typically always on Wifi though, so my data isnt as high as it would be if it werent for me using Wifi. I get AWESOME 4G coverage at my apartment too
used +8gbs of 4g on primary line this past month, streaming like crazy....bought nba league pass, only use google cloud music for music and heavy surfing. im not worried about overages, ive got a smarthphone to use not stare at.
as for that 300gb claim....id say youre friend is just a douche and didnt even come close to that. i doubt you could even pull 300 gigs of data in a month due to poor sprint coverage/service
The most I ever used was 6.5 gigs and that's because I was testing this torrentlt client on my phone. Lol I downloaded the entire Naruto series.

My highest has been 25GB on 4g and 2GB on 3g. I'm already at almost 5GB on 4g n not even at 1GB yet on 3g since I barely use that crap. I got 17 more days left in this cycle so i'm sure I'll be at about 20GB by the end of this cycle.

I think you're good...a lot of us have hit high numbers for one reason or another and if you actually have a good signal and utilize your phone for streaming music and uploading pics, etc its not hard to hit a higher number.
When I moved to a new place a few months ago I tethered my revue and two laptops for a couple of weeks until I had broadband hooked up and hit 48 gigs...no letters in the mail. I get great 4G at home and 3G for that matter and average around 10 gigs a month combined usage. Sprint is great if you're in a strong signal area.
I don't understand why a home ISP internet provider can give you all the data you want but cell companies decided to cap people and offer tiered plans. It is not like it cost them more if I use 2 gigs or 4 gigs of data.
Is is a real shame that mobile providers took this direction with data. Getting anything more then the 2 or 3 gig plan just makes your cell phone bill an outrages unaffordable price.
Sprint is great that they still offer unlimited data but when you are using 3G and getting 40kbs what is the point? How could Sprint have ever let there network get this bad. When I had the EVO 4G and I never needed to turn of 4G. Since it killed the battery within hours I was able to use 3G for anything I wanted to without a problem.
Now, if you are not in a 4G area, you phone is almost useless as far as data is concerened. Streaming anything is almost near impossible.
If Sprint actually fixes their network and has LTE 2 years from now I am sure they will not be unlimited either. If they were to tier now, why would anyone in their right mind stay with them? Like Sprint took everything else away from their customers, unlimited data will be next. They just need a network that they can pull that BS on...
Depends on who your ISP is.
ATT has a 100gb limit, and I get a lousy 2.5mbs for $38 month...
Comcast has a 250gb limit.

There may not be a direct monetary cost, but bandwidth being consumed by one user is bandwidth unavailable for other users to use; it is a rival resource. Users who use a large amount of data place a higher burden on the network than users who use a typical amount and cause data speeds for these users to be lower than they would be otherwise. This reduction in service quality experienced by other users could cause them to leave the network and cost the service provider.

DSL users are capped at 150GB, U-Verse has no cap since AT&T can't distinguish the TV usage from actual internet usage, so they don't cap that at all.

Going from 3G to 4G... Even worth it?

I have an S3 but am using only 3G data from an old plan with ATT.
I was considering upgrading to a limited plan with 4G but am not sure what the point is. 3G really seems fast enough. And what's the point of using 4G when you can burn through your entire month's allocation in eight minutes (assuming 50Mbit download speed).
The download speed is nice but sorta useless on capped plans its the ping thats a big change.
So that time it takes to start the transfer of data is instant on 4G (LTE)

So I just upgraded to S3 today from the captivate. I have a grandfathered unlimited 3G data plan and they just upgraded it to unlimited 4G data plan free of charge, not sure if your case is the same but I didn't have to give up my unlimited data.
Also, just cause your speeds are faster doesn't necessarily mean you use more data. If you continue on the same trend of data usage you won't be hitting your limit any faster than you do now. But the speed at which you do things will increase

Not sure what your data plan situation is, but even with grandfathered unlimited, as mentioned above, you can keep that plan with LTE; albeit with throttling after 3GB and a couple warnings. LTE is def worth it IMO, as for the 50mbps, it's certainly possible to test that high depending on where you are. Very traffic dependent. When it first switched on around here I was testing at 40+. It's since dropped to ~20, which I still enjoy quite a bit.

I still have my unlimited data plan from my iPhone days. When you upgrade to a LTE plan you still keep your unlimited but they throttle you after 5 gigs of data used. If I was still using my iPhone 4S they would be throttling me after 3 gigs of data used. So that is why I switched to an LTE phone. And so far I'm enjoying my S3!

You can switch to LTE data and keep your Unlimited Data Plan. Also you'll get throttled at 5gb, not 3gb of use. So if ou keep doing and using the Internet the same way you'll be fine, unless you start downloading things, watching HD videos, etc. I've burned my 3gb plan in two days last month when I got my S3. LTE its worth it. Here I've got 25mb downloads and 12mb uploads.
Hope this helps http://www.att.com/esupport/datausage.jsp?source=IZDUel1160000000U
And BTW you just call Customer Service and tell them you want to upgrade to an LTE Unlimited Data Plan, that's what we did with my mother's S3. Mine was upgraded from 3GB 4G(H+) to 3GB LTE. No charge, and the data counter was reset to 0mb.

I get a consistent 50ms ping, 22mb down and 11 mb up with LTE in san diego(att). If you are in a city with LTE, I recommend you use it, its very fast. Plus not many people are using LTE with att yet, so there is plenty of bandwidth(for now)

4G speed on SII (T-Mobile)

So i got a T-Mobile version SII (the phone has the T-Mobile Logo on it, and so does the box.). I signed up for the value plan w/ 2GB unlimited data (4G speeds until 2GBs, then it drops to 2G speeds)
I just did a speedtest, disabled my wifi, enabled my mobile data) and tried my speed and the highest i can get is about 4 kB/s. this is definitely not 4G speed. I contacted T-Mobile support, and they were no help to me, they just said that the phone connects to 4G automatically. So then i thought it might be my location, but upon checking my coverage I'm in the "excellent" area.
I think it might be my settings, but I have no idea now. Dont know if this makes a difference but speedtest reports I'm using "EDGE" network... wifi works nicely w/ about 15 Mbps speed
Interestingly, when i have 2G enabled, my download speeds are barely higher (4.7 kB/s --> 14.7 kB/s (2G is enabled))
Here are my settings:
Data Enabled (Check)
Data Roaming (uncheck)
National Data Roaming (uncheck)
Network Mode (GSM (selected) // LTE/GSM (unselected))
Access Point Names:
(Options: Simple / Straight-Talk Mobile / T-Mobile US (T-Mo selected)
Network Operator / Available Networks: (AT&T, T-Mobile)
I am running CM9.1 on my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy SII, SGH-T989 (rooted)
Plan: Value Plan with Unlimited Data w/ 2GB cap for high speed.
EDIT: actually i dont think i can get 4G on this plan... anyone else with this plan?
I'm on the monthly 4g plan for tmobile. $60 plan with unlimited everything 2gb at 5g speeds. I get great speeds. Now if you used up those 2gigs of 4g, left data on while a data hogging app was running, could suffice to where your data went. Once that 2gb is done, your knocked to edge. Log into your account via WWW.T-Mobile.com and click "my account" and turn off WiFi and select yes. It will tell u how much data that's been used.

Try changing this: Network Mode (GSM (selected) to AUTO.
:good:
@nellycruzz i just switched from Sprint at the end of august. and I've use about 15 MBs so far, so that is definitely not the reason.
@premiatul nope. dont see the auto option. just GSM and LTE/GSM.
EDIT: just tried what LTE/GSM would do, and it seems like it gave me a little more speed increase, now at 114 kB/s, the network was Cell...
tried the GSM option again, and i got 235 kB/s with the network being HSPA.
The time is 11 PM PDT

Now if you used up those 2gigs of 4g, left data on while a data hogging app was running, could suffice to where your data went. Once that 2gb is done, your knocked to edge. Log into your account via WWW.T-Mobile.com and click "my account" and turn off WiFi and select yes. It will tell u how much data that's been used.

OMG seriously? There isnt any app that would use THAT much data by itself.

You should of gotten the new promotional plan yesterday only. For 30, you get unlimited now without throttle. Only thing though, no more free hotspot with that. Which i didnt care. I dont use hotspot. I switched over to the new one sep 5th only

Um it's not September 5th only I hope you know? That was just the release date for the new data plan.

i thought about the 4G unlimited, but I'm usually connected to wifi (unless of course I'm driving)...
So is it the CM ROM then... is there anyway i can fix this?

I've seen people say this, but I am pretty sure the terms and conditions for the old plans did not include tethering as Tmobile still had a separate fee for this. You got around this by not using Chrome on the tethered device.
That being said, shouldn't you still be able to tether the same ways as it wasn't really "allowed" before?
I'm on 4G monthly plan with 2GB cap. My SGII with stock ICS 4.0.4 getting 21Mbit down and 2.6Mbit up on 4G.
So, I think if you have enough signal bars and 4G coverage in your area then something wrong with your phone or ROM.
Just tried at work since I get really good 4g coverage here. I pulled in 20443kbps down and 2358kbps up. So, if you're getting old-school dialup speeds, you are either throttled, or you don't have 3g coverage.
think i figured it out. just had to enable WiMax in my notification drawer . not getting great speeds like the others I've seen, but i got about 1 Mbps...and my network status is HSPAP:15 which is assume s H+
thanks for the help

[Q] lte vs wifi only

Im leaning towards the 8.4 version, since i think the 10.5 and 8.4 all have the same processors. Im trying to decide between lte and wifi only based on two factors : performance and lte usability.
i did some research but i cant seem to find a consensus on which processor is better, the wifi only exynos or the lte qualcomm.
I have at&t and i get free hotspot on my phone. I also have a big discount so an lte tablet would only be 5 dollars a month on my plan, but of course the lte tablet costs more. Will there be an internet speed performance difference in using a tablet with built in lte vs just using wifi off of my samsung note edge? I know lte gets up to 50mbps, so what quality connection do i get on wifi when using an lte smartphone as my source? Would both connections give me identical lte performance? Im just trying to figure out if there is a point at all in paying those 5 dollars a month.
thanks all for your help.
Well I do know that WiFi on the tab s can pick up WiFi signals that are very far. I have the wifi T800 and sometimes use my computer hotspot and it works fine. I haven't tryed it on a phone though but I have not seen any speed differences on my network and its always a steady 2mbps ( how fast my WiFi is lol). The exynos chipset on the WiFi tab s lags here and there but not much. I haven't seem much snapdragon or anything else but that might be better then exynos.
To answer your questions and make things easy here.
As from my experience there's no speed performance difference in using a tablet with late or WiFi coming from an hotspot. So what ever speed is putting out is mostly the same with the tab s.
Depending on lte speeds, it may be slow or fast depending on where you go. But 10 Mbps should be fine if the speeds are somewhat slow. But idk if your plan is unlimited data, so using hotspots will use a lot of data when using a hotspot.
You can try the WiFi one first and maybe (not sure) if of doesn't work out for you.
All the best!
my plan isnt unlimited. Are you saying that the tablet will use more data out of my plan while piggybacking off of a hotspot than having its own lte connection?

From my guess, I think hotspots will use more data since a device is connected and the phone is feeding out internet/WiFi to the tab s with it being connected. From what I heard hotspots use more data vs an lte itself. That's my best guess and hope this helps! How much data does 5 bucks a month get you?
^^^^ hes correct. Hotspots or any kind of tethering use a ton of data. More so then LTE. Without a unlimited plan I wouldn't recommend it as your going to hit your data cap quite fast.

Tmobile speeds are horrible? 1 day old unlimited plan

I recently switched to tmobile on my s6 edge g925t to get away from metro.... I even have an lte extender set up. I get 3-4 bars of lte And my speeds are very slow...any idea why...I have the default apn.. 1mbps download. ..

its the area your in, (worked at t-mobile )
if you go complain they most likely would say maybe its the sim card, let me replace it for free or some BS
T-mobile internet speed sucks... Unless you get the unlimited high speed data plan. Get it? "High Speed Data Plan". It's what they want you to buy to get faster internet and honesty i have it and it picks up a little bit. But they literally had to send me a new phone and i rooted it just so my internet can be faster... there's also apps that doesn't require rooting to make your internet faster. But rooting it will help A LOT.
I've been pretty happy with my speeds....
Call and check your act. Whoever set it up may have set you up throttled l..I've seen it and put out Cs fires a lot

This was my speed in the Suwanee, Georgia area this morning, Unbelievable! Fastest I've ever had by at least 20Mbps download.
That's crazy. Can you get a screen shot of the results tab from that app?
Yeah sure. I usually get great speeds in that area which is near my work but this time it spiked up to over 100. Crazy.
No complaints here with Tmobile
I noticed my data connections had been reduced since I changed my plan to 10gb per line since I added another person. Is it supposed to be slower?
