I just got my EVO and will soon root it. I can't stand the HTC ROM and all of its apps that override the regular Android apps (messaging, calendar, etc.). I would like a minimalistic ROM with all of the HTC apps and Sense removed. Can anyone recommend a good one that may also offer benefits for performance (e.g. JIT) and battery life? I'd prefer to have the Sprint apps on it, such as Sprint TV and the NFL app, but I suppose I can always add those on afterward. I also won't consider a ROM with any sorts of issues (such as broken camera). Thanks!
Just found this ROM and flashed it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=706202
It's been great, seems quick and very stable. It also allows you to delete almost any app, including sense and rosie util, plus any sprint ones you want off, plus the bloat HTC stuff (peep, trimmer, footprints, etc.)
Try it out, I've been pretty happy with it.
Damage control. Its got a gui they made to remove anything you don't wasn't and profiles to save battery or go into performance mode. Its amazing I get over a day usage now
Thanks for the quick reply guys. With so many great choices, I may just have to try them all!
ok so i know that its a Rom,
but how do i get it.
whats the benefits of it?
i mean whats all the hype about it?
please give me information about it =)
I also need to know where i can get the link fro
Should be on first page of development forum. Read OP for all info about the ROM and link will be there too.
[ROM][WTF][BBQ] CyanogenMod-6 - No Sense at ALL! - V6.0.0 (08/28/2010)
[INFO] Unofficial Cyanogen Mod 6.1 Nightly Thead/FAQ (Updated 9/23)
Basically, it's a fully open-source ROM that strictly adheres to the AOSP (believe it or not, while Android is FOSS, or Free Open Source Software, Sense is not, making it non open-source ROM. It's kinda like a moral high-ground, if you will).
100% of the CyanogenMod source code can be viewed on their Github
If you have a feature request, odds are it can and will be implemented in the next version (or if you're more daring, in the Nightly. See below)
If you have a bug report, you can issue it directly to the CM team on their issue tracker. Most bugs are fixed by the next version (and are progressively tested in the Nightly)
Features many speed, battery life, and UI tweaks not found in Sense ROMs, making it also very flexible, especially for skinning.
Has such features as the ability to force roaming-only mode (good for those who don't live in a city with good Sprint coverage, or work in such a location), no carrier-specific bloatware, and many other heavily requested items (for example, the next release will be featuring camera features that outshine even Sense's camera, such as continuous auto-focus, manual focus area, autofocus, and all of this even while recording video).
Has developers and a large community you can get help from, via forums, Twitter, or IRC.
Is recompiled from source every night, so the latest features, bugfixes, and improvements can be tested and tried by users, allowing for a better full release version.
Listed in ROM Manager, meaning that it's extremely easy for people to pull down release candidates, full versions, nightlies, etc.
Some other tweaks/features:
Has the Bluetooth bitpool setting fixed, so audio on BT headphones/headsets sounds superb.
Has the Stagefright AAC fix so AAC streams (Pandora before v1.4, Slacker, XiiaLive, etc.) don't sound like 32kbps MP3's.
Allows for 0, 90, 180, and 270 degree viewing, and you can turn off certain angles via the settings.
Nightlies are currently running a .34 kernel (faster, better battery life, etc.) and hopefully will have .35 or later in time for the official release of CM6.1 or 6.2.
Has a better Bluetooth stack which allows for the use of Wiimotes as gaming controllers, Bluetooth keyboards and mice, and other devices.
FPS unlocked
Both cameras take pictures and record videos.
kernel speed tweaks
Custom version of ADW launcher
Expanded Spare Parts app
DSP settings
Torch flashlight uses camera flash, includes widget
Additional settings and tweaks for Contacts, Dialer, and MMS (maybe more)
There's really a ton of features and things to find in there (like for example, they just added a feature where you can hold down the Back button to force-close the topmost application in case it locks up). You can see new updates as they're created by following the CMSrc bot on Twitter which posts all of the updates as they happen from Github.
And you know what, if you don't like it, fine, that's your opinion. You can always go back to stock, or whatever you want. No pressure.
EDIT: And let me say one more thing: On Stock, I got about 4 hours of battery life at work (-110dB signal, 20-60% Time without Signal). I get about 6-10 hours on CyanogenMod with the Snap 7.6 kernel, same exact environment, with more usage.
Dang,thanks guys.

Hi. May I ask what are the improvements for the latest ICS 4.0.4 firmware for Arc S?
I already have the update, but I didn't start updating my phone yet.
Can someone post some performance and hardware improvements. Thanks!
Feels ALOT smoother than the 4.0.3 release. It's got a new baseband, and I have noticed quite a few bug fixes.
The only thing that still sucks balls is the speed of the dialer and contacts lookup, as this is a primary phone function, it's shocking how poorly coded it is, when comparable apps from the store like exDialer are so much faster.
Come on Sony, if as you claim you want to be up there as one of the big Android sellers next year, then you need to sort these lots of little things out, as lots of little things make big differences.
Did they fixed the wifi bug???

WHat!? Really? mine opens in less than a half second...
The battery bug for me is totally gone. I will need some more time testing but so far it seems to be even better than GB for me.
Had no problems with WiFi and tbh its improved for me also. It connects so quick when turning on, the fastest I've seen WiFi connect on any firmware across my various Sony phones
The whole experience is almost perfectly smooth, even with all my apps in the background and heavy auto sync apps (facebook, fb for xperia, friendcaster, exchange email, imap email, whatsapp and google with music, instant upload etc)
Only thing is I would agree with the dialer/contacts app being slow, but usually for me its only when entering it, once its loaded its usually quite smooth I only put this down to all my contacts which are all linked to facebook, google, whatsapp etc
If it helps, I should mention I use Go Launcher as my home launcher
Would highly recommend upgrading
Hm, the slowness of opening Phone or Contacts was the main reason why I reverted to 2.3.4 after trying 4.0.3 so this makes me think it's not worth to try 4.0.4 after all.
Are there any real advantages of 4.0.4 over 2.3.4? Beyond a fresh interface and higher version numbers? Is game performance still worse in ICS than GB?
What about the home launcher is it still slow as hell/Now im on arconium muiu and i really like it but i still want to know about the 4.0.4

4.0.3 for me was really slow and poor all round. Although I mentioned it is slow in 4.0.4, it is only as slow as it was for me on 2.3.4. I wouldn't say its any slower. And so far it seems smoother once it has opened. Hope this helps!
Feels much faster than 4.0.3 but light notifications aren't working and they're quite important to me.
It's far from perfect.
Hi. Thank you for all of your replies. I'm currently updating my phone thru PCC.
Did they fix digital compass bug in google map??

It is a lot smoother than the last 4.0.3 release (that release was CRAP) BUT it still is not as smooth as GB
I think I can stand using 4.0.4 for a couple more days, then I'm flashing back to the buttery smoothness of GB.
I hope the next ICS release will be up to the quality of their GB releases.

how about the Battery and the Camera improvements? Thanks!
I'm happy about the update, my Arc S got faster than I had from the previous version.
If you guys are experiencing slowness or lagspikes after the ICS update directly from PCC or SEUS.. It would be best to do a backup and do a master reset..
What sony did was update the software and pretty much synced the current software and existing info with the ICS 4.0.4 update instead of completely deleting the GB software and installing ICS..
I also did my daily routine with the new update to find out the battery life difference.. For me its much more efficient..
There is still the issue with the digital compass of google maps..
Some apps are not yet optimized for ICS but thats acceptable since ICS only holds a very small percentage of users compared to GB users..
The camera feels more faster in response time.. The update now has an option to enable/disable an on-screen shutter button.. But i still prefer the touch-screen snapping option instead of the shutter button option though..

can you teach me how to do Master Reset? Thanks.
Btw, why does the camera image quality in 4.0.4 became blurry even it uses Auto-Focusing?
Is there someplace people can go to make requests for new Android features? (Someplace were developers might actually see it and perhaps implement the requests?)
I have had ideas for several features that I think would make my Android devices (I have owned about 6) far better...
- One of my ideas was the ability for more than one Bluetooth device (ie: wireless headphone/earphones) to be able to connect to a single Android device at the same time. I go running, hiking, etc... When I go alone, I often listen to music. It would be great if when I run with someone else, if they could listen to the music I am playing on my Android device at the same time I am.
- I have changed ROMs many times, but when I do, it is always a pain to have to setup (or recreate) my music playlists on the new ROM. Many (not all) Android music players seem to allow users to import music playlists that have been created on PCs or whatever. None of the music players or the Android OS itself seem to allow me to save a music playlist as a file (ie: export) that I can reload later, use on another device, or give to someone else.
- None of the Android ROMs I have come across seem to provide a (relatively easy) way to change the the the resolution (LCD density) so that I can make images and text larger or smaller on my display. This is something that is very easy to do (change a setting and hit save/apply) on every PC I have ever owned, but the few ROMs that seem to allow this seem to have a complex procedure for doing it.
- Ability to put Widgets in folders (on the desktop). I like widgets. I sometimes even like the UI of a widget better than the associated app. (Sometimes widgets provides a nice condensed view of the information/features, or provide simple capabilities like a switch to turn on/off a feature without launching menus and digging through them.) Unfortunately the Android OS (or the "Home" apps that currently exist) does not (do not) allow widgets to be put into a folder on the desktop. I would like this feature for many reasons. 1) The folder could limit the widget from consuming battery or system resources until the folder was opened. That way widgets would not use up my battery or CPU cycles until I opened the folder and looked at them.
- It would be great to have a "magnifying glass" (zoom feature) that I could use to make any specific area on the display larger (so that if I'm having trouble seeing something small on the display, I can magnify it large enough to see it).
I have more ideas, but those are just a few of the things I think would make Android devices better. Feel free to add your own suggestions to this list.
Pretty good ideas as far as magnifying just pinch to zoom in that specific area or double tap. I believe there are apps to backup a music playlist the bluetooth idea is actually kind of cool

Great ideas. I use Google Music to set up my playlists with my music on my desktop at home. No matter if I'm at work, over a friends house, or switching roms on my phone, as soon as I download google music, all my playlists and music is right at my fingertips.
As far as resolution changing, I would suggest Carbon Rom as you can change your density in less than a minute, and that's mostly because you have to reboot twice, but there are no force close issues or any of that.
As far as features go, I would like to see recovery feature addition:
The thing I hate the most about switching roms is having to log in to 15 different accounts again. I wish TWRP would construct a feature that allows me to carry over my sign in information for standard apps (Facebook, Webex, GroupME, etc.) that most people use.
Or perhaps, a ROM that offered three different login slots that attempted to log into every app that I restore using those slots first and if login is unsuccessful, THEN prompt me to enter login information.
Just a suggestion that would allow the end-user to streamline setting up his/her rom. What do you guys think?
PS: I think the multi-bluetooth device feature would be sweet as well. I have a couple of computers at home that I use my Note to control, it would be nice to have the option to control any given device in an instance.
As for resolution, that's much more easier said than done, since some apps would have to be rebuilt from the ground, or at least would have to individually be written and flashed for said resolution.
However, if there are a few apps that you really want to change (like for me, G-Mail, Chrome, XDA, gReader, etc), you really need to check out XPosed, honestly, I don't know if I'll ever buy a device that doesn't support it or something similar. It features on the fly resolution/DPI adjustments per app, one of the greatest MODs ever brought to Android, hands down.
The Note2 does what I need it to once rooted. I would like to see better prices and data first. Why have the next great thing when you pay out the ass and don't have equal speed?
I would like to see Android updates that actually make me want them, like better codex, performance, UI functions, etc. Some updates don't really seem like updates, like when Ubuntu releases a new version but you do the same thing as before, and you are left wanting more.

I agree somewhat. However, I think that the 4.2.2 roms with Linaro are noticeably faster than other 4.2.2 roms without it. Carbon is much faster without me having to use apps like Pimp My Rom and Lag Reducer without compromising my battery performance.
Halo is also another great custom feature that may one day rival the stock multi-window feature.
I also like the profile triggers built into Carbon, bluetooth and wifi triggers are wonderful, hopefully we can get some GPS triggers, then we will really be in business lol.
All in all, I agree with you though, we need some REAL POWER behind these updates. But I'm sure devs would say "Let's get some real CASH behind the devs and you guys will see some POWER!!" **Gotta look at it from both sides**
Great input guys. Let's keep it going!!!

Desperately needed and no, Google Hangouts (in its current state ) is not the answer.

See I like Touchwiz and the stock UI bs and want more of these mods to make into a stock ROM, sometimes I wish Sammy read these types of forums.
I'm currently on the summer 2021 release of the Verizon stock rom based on Android 11 and ONE UI 3.1, but have been hearing about newer versions based on Android 12. I'm fairly happy with the performance of the existing combination, (the speed and battery life are nothing short of epic) but have never found a solution for the longstanding bug where audio playback inside of Shazam is choppy.
My question to the community is if newer builds of the stock rom fix the choppy Shazam audio playback, and also, whether or not they break the Wichita version of the Google Camera app, which I rely on extensively (unless there's a less-broken distribution that I haven't heard about yet, in which case, lay it on me!).
Well, I finally bit the bullet and chomped down all the dirty/in-place updates for both the stock rom based on Android 11 and Android 12. After I inserted a T-Mobile-branded sim card, it set off a whirlwind of changes, including switching the stock rom from the Verizon rom to the T-Moible one all by itself somehow. Lots of nasty packages to disable, but it calms down well enough after doing so. Among other things, the T-Mobile stock rom is extremely aggressive about software updates. I let it push me around this time, but after getting through the batch, I did disable the obnoxious & pushy updater.
I can confirm that choppy Shazam audio was fixed by one of those (can't remember which one) and that the Google Camera app still works in the new rom, so that's a win. The sidecar widgets are degraded, and the little animation that appears when power is connected looks kind of weird, but everything else is alright, except for the horrible widget shaping on the newer stock Samsung launcher. Also, the friendlier band switching menu is stripped out, requiring use of the dialer code to prompt the more primitive one.
If anyone was on the fence about it, as long as you're okay with those minor caveats, I'd recommend going along for the upgrade.
