hello boyz, yesterday I managed to put [ROM] Unofficial Cyanogenmod 7.2.0-RC0-marvel-KANG (2.3.7) on my phone and I love it but...
I have problems with USB Tethering, I want to share my internet connection with my phone but soon as I connect it I lose conection on pc and there is no conection on the phone too, drivers seems to be installed, in device manager I checked and pc reckognize it, I know it something small and stupid, anyone know the solution, please, in about one month I will make wireless in my home but in that period I need this ??!
thank U,
cheers !
Do you have a tethering plan with your mobile network? Because temporarily kicking you off data might be their anti-tethering technique.
That's what mine does (Three), you can get around it by using a tethering program that masks your usage such as pdanet.

Hi everyone:
I am new to android. Can anyone tell me if I can use/root my desire as a WiFi router so that I can use my 3G connection to beam out WiFi connection from my phone and browse net on my other devices. (Somewhat like that in HTC HD2, where can can convert the phone into WiFi router.)
This is very important for me as it will help me decide whether to buy desire or HD2. I am really reluctant in buying any windows mobile device and wanna get android.
Please help me on this.
Have a nice day!!
Wireless Tether for Root Users does this. You need root, we are very close to rooting.
There is also a wired option built in.
That'll be great. Yes I know that i'll have to root my device. I just wanted to confirm if this is possible after rooting. So it is. right?
The problem with wired rooting is that u'll always need to have your computer or laptop with you. But generally i want to share m connection with other mobiles when i don't have my laptop around. anyways thanks for the reply. Hope to see the root soon
cheers
Yeah "Wireless Tether for Root Users" is an awesome free app, you can set access control if you want (you must confirm someone is allowed to use the wifi) and you can configure a wep key. It's simple to use and does its job.
can anyone on 3UK check if wifi tether for root users works fine on 3uk network?
I know it works no problems on my TMobile.
Desire HD Wifi Router
This app is great, i try used in my mobile and talk about it.
i had my desire hooked upto my pc via usb and had 3g and wifi enabled, connected to the internet fine. but im not sure on tmobiles tethering policy i.e extra charges etc so decided to turn 3g off and use wifi. i.e wifi to the phone and share to the pc via usb. no dice, wont work! why wont it let me share my wifi which is alot faster than the 3g it will let me share?
also will i incur any fees from tmobile?

I had the problem with Win 7 64bit. The drivers of tether just wouldn't install. I solved it by using Easytether which can be found in the market.
You have to install the app on your Desire and you also need to install a small program om your pc/laptop but once installed on the Desire the app itself tells you what to do and when and where to download the stuff for your pc. Piece of cake
Does your laptop not have wifi?!

Can you do WiFi tethering on the Desire? That would be cool...
I doubt you can...because it seems pointless. I can't imagine a device running an OS that accepts USB modems that doesn't itself have Wifi built in unless it's a very old laptop, and then what OS are you running?

Try the app PdaNet, it lets you share your internet (3G/H) via USB or Bluetooth
yes both my macbook and desktop have wifi. i was curious as to why the phone would rather use a slow 3g connection to share as opposed to wifi if it is available.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
There is a program available so you can use wifi on your laptop with the wifi on the phone. But to use that program you need root access so it won't work on the Desire (yet).

Is there anyway I can have my desire use my PC's internet when it is connected via usb?
At this stage I dont have wifi at work and cant use that method.
Essentially I want to reverse the direction of tethering when the phone is connected to my computer.
Thanks, Dean
Unfortunately, reverse tethering or connecting the phone through computer's Internet connection (through an ad hoc wifi) is not possible, which is quite annoying. It would be nice if this type of feature, although highly unlikely, could be incorporated an upcoming ROM update for example.
That is annoying, especially since I could do this with my old WM - although thanks for the reply and info.
I wonder if it could be done through an app perhaps.
Cheers, Dean

Yes it's extremely annoying. I had this on my HD and HD2, but i really don't know why HTC could not incorporate this with the Desire. Afterall, it's a desirable (excuse pun) feature.
it has nothing to do with your phone, since it all depends on the host computer. On mac: you can do it easily by sharing your internet connection in system preferences.

maybe i misunderstood you, but its perfectly possible to make an adhoc wifi network, and connect to the internet on your desire

it has everything to do with your phone. If the phone has no interface for it, it won't work.
Can't say whether it works or not, just saying that it does not depend solely on your computer

odd, because i use it nearly everyday
So does this mean I can do it or not ?
Do I need and ad-hoc wifi network - what exactly is this ?
Thanks

If your computer has a wifi card (laptops usually do, desktops don't) you can create a local network and connect your desire to it.
No idea if it's possible over a wire
You don't need to create an ad-hoc network, just download connectify and use it as a hotspot on your laptop, then connect the Desire to the hotspot you just created and that's it.

Ahh that is handy!
Thanks for the tip
I created an adhoc network following this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx
The host laptop itself can see the adhoc network, but desire cannot.
Any ideas?
Maybe I'm wrong but AFAIK Desire can't 'see' ad-hoc networks, only access points. You can get internet from PC, but only using Connectify under Windows 7 or by using advanced magic under Linux.
Am I right or something has changed lately?
BTW: does anybody share internet from Linux? Any suggestions?
As far as i know, you can only see an ad-hoc network if you have the desire rooted and change some files somewhere (can't remember which ones...), either way the next best thing is to use some kind of software that creates an Wifi Access Point.
I don't get it: why would you want to connect to the internet via your PC instead of directly connecting to your WiFi router ?
Maybe when you only have a LAN-connection?
Or Maybe when your in Work and only have a Lan Setup
and want to access / download things on your phone,
Reverse USB tethering would be AMAZING!!!!!

Stupid me, just hadn't realized that still not everyone has a WiFi capable router nowadays...
The problem with ad-hoc internet sharing is that your host PC still needs a WiFi connection. You can't use internet through USB. I've tried it yesterday at work (yes, for the Froyo update ), but no succes.
Having a smartphone in a country with high mobile data costs is like having a Ferrari to do your local grocery shopping Fortunately I'll have unlimited mobile internet next week. So I can finally use my Desire as intended.
Has anyone found the Samsung drivers necessary to get the native USB tethering working? I see the drivers mentioned in the user manual, but haven't gotten a hold of them yet...
Manual:
Tethering
Tethered Mode allows your computer to obtain an external data connection by using the device’s wireless data services and a wired USB connection. Tap USB tethering to activate tethering mode.
Important: If you are using your device for Tethering, you may be prompted for additional drivers. The Samsung Mobile Driver for SPH-D710 contains the ADB, CDMA, & WiMAX drivers that are required for using either Tethering (Phone as a Modem) or development tools.
- Go to SAMSUNG and visit the D710 Product page, where you can navigate to the Download Center to obtain this driver.
- The online FAQ also provide detailed information about this driver.
- A wireless data connection can be done by using the device’s Sprint Hotspot feature.
1. Press > and tap > Wireless and network > Tethering.
2. Tap USB tethering to add a checkmark and activate the feature. The USB tethering icon is displayed at the top of your screen.

However at that website, all you can currently download is the manual - no drivers. Any ideas? Anybody know where to get the drivers?
Thanks
There is a 99.9% chance that this is disabled (by Sprint) anyway without using Sprint's $30/mo official method.
Wait for root and modded roms.

Well with a USB cable plugged in, you can turn the feature on, but the computer doesn't recognize it without the drivers. I'm hoping that's a good sign...

I would be thrilled if that were the case. It isn't likely, but, bigger things have been overlooked before.
Please report back with results.
I've got a call in to Samsung tier 3 support and was promised a call back with more info, so I'll keep you apprised.
OP Delivers!
Looks like they put the drivers up. At work right now, but I'll be testing them tonight!
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SPH-D710ZKASPR
Select "Software" next to "Manuals."
Unsurprisingly, it looks like Sprint has disabled USB tethering.
I've installed the drivers, and the computer and phone successfully connect. Once USB tether is enabled, however, the phone will drop both 4G and 3G connections and throw up the following (see attached screenshot):
Error 67: Registration Failure. Your Sprint data service username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again.

I know the software/ drivers are configured properly because I can pass the internet connection on to the computer when the phone is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi.
Really disappointed (but not surprised)...

Not easytether, but PDANet works.
is it free? and doesn't require root?
I haven't tried Easytether on the phone yet, but I can confirm PDAnet works and is free , although it's limited to http only and no https unless you buy the paid version. Easytether changed their application so now it has like a week trial before it shuts down.
what i hate about easytether and PDAnet is you have to have the client installed on the machine already for that to work. i liked how my EVO (rooted) had the option to USB tether on any computer... guess i gotta wait until some good ROMs come out.
Just root the phone people and install wifi tether. Works flawlessly

Yeah, I've tried rooting the phone and then using the wifi tether and it worked for a while then it stopped working. Now I can't get it to connect to the PC.
Would be nice if there was a better way of tethering for free

If you use PDANet, the phone with PDANet installed will automatically detect if the computer has the client installed or not. If it does NOT have the client already installed, it will prompt you to download the windows EXE onto the phone, and then you can install the client onto the computer from the EXE it downloads onto your phone.
It's saved me a few times working out in the field.
I have the Sprint Hotspot hack that allows 4G or 3G to tether via Wifi without the plan. I would like USB tether as well to work, is there something that uses the NDIS instead of their own client? I know both MAC and Windows work with the NDIS device sharing... If not, what's the best one that will tether 4G via USB?
FL29 radio and im running GB 2.3.6 (dont care much about the ICS / Jelly Bean unless they have both 3G and 4G tether'able via Wifi and USB)
Anybody have played with ICS and gotten the 3G and 4G thetherable at least via Wifi? Wifi thether for root didn't work for me, reason why I went back to 2.3.6 and the FL29 Odexed SpotHot fix.
Which OS, with Gingerbread just root it and download the Wired Tether apk, from the same people that make the Wifi tether .apk I really wish they re worked the code for ICS or JB
YES YOU MUST ROOT THE PHONE!!
Otherwise Custom roms all seem to have USB and wifi tethering enabled.

Forgot to mention I am on Boost, they don't offer tethering service for me
Hello everyone,
I am currently at work, and they have their always fun hitler-esque blocking procedures on certain websites that shouldn't be blocked. The place I work at has an open Wifi network available to customers that doesn't block anything. So my question is.. Is it possible for me to connect to the Wifi here at work and then tether that connection through USB to the desktop that I'm currently using?
Thanks!
Ricky
Yes..it is possible. But you will need to disconnect the lan cable before you tether and might need to restart the browser on your desktop.

Does your desktop have a wifi card? And you can use your phone as a wifi hotspot,if your rooted.
Will your company be able to tell if you were doing that from a company computer, don't they monitor the pc's,since they block websites from you?
All you have to do is turn on the wifi and connect the phone to the computer with a USB. Don't mount it as a disk drive. Now use a USB tether app from the market and bam!

not particularly but could be
anyways yes the evo way costs nothing but you could also maybe pick up a usb dongle? basically the same idea and doesnt tie up your phone just a thought
heh dongle
You can share the WiFi signal via USB. I have used PDANet before and it works fine, however, I have only used it with 3G. I am not sure if it will work with WiFi signal. Also, it entails having the PDANet software installed on the PC, which I am assuming is not a possibilty due to possible restrictions (seeing that youa re being restricted as it is). Doing a "usb tether" search on the market may provide other apps that may allow you to tether via USB without the need of having an application istalled on the PC as well.
