Desire as WiFi Router - Desire General

Hi everyone:
I am new to android. Can anyone tell me if I can use/root my desire as a WiFi router so that I can use my 3G connection to beam out WiFi connection from my phone and browse net on my other devices. (Somewhat like that in HTC HD2, where can can convert the phone into WiFi router.)
This is very important for me as it will help me decide whether to buy desire or HD2. I am really reluctant in buying any windows mobile device and wanna get android.
Please help me on this.
Have a nice day!!

Wireless Tether for Root Users does this. You need root, we are very close to rooting.
There is also a wired option built in.

That'll be great. Yes I know that i'll have to root my device. I just wanted to confirm if this is possible after rooting. So it is. right?
The problem with wired rooting is that u'll always need to have your computer or laptop with you. But generally i want to share m connection with other mobiles when i don't have my laptop around. anyways thanks for the reply. Hope to see the root soon
cheers

Yeah "Wireless Tether for Root Users" is an awesome free app, you can set access control if you want (you must confirm someone is allowed to use the wifi) and you can configure a wep key. It's simple to use and does its job.

can anyone on 3UK check if wifi tether for root users works fine on 3uk network?
I know it works no problems on my TMobile.

Desire HD Wifi Router
This app is great, i try used in my mobile and talk about it.

Don't really need PDAnet internet tethering for (T-mobile) Desire

Just realised that I dont really need to use the PDAnet application on my Desire or on my pc to tether internet using usb, I'm not sure about other network branded desires but I know that a T-mobile representative posted on the forums that Tethering is allowed on T-mobile as long as you stay within the 3GB fair use policy - Decent =D
All you have to do is select Internet Sharing when you connect your phone up, you'll have to wait a while for the computer to install it as a network adapter. This internet sharing option might not be on other branded phones.

update: its a bit jumpy I think, first time trying it.
Very true, but if you refering to the new 2.2 update allowing it,
the new update will allow for wireless , atm you can only
do it through having the phone connected through cabling.
This is what i think anyway.
Even thought internet sharing is available on most Desires (as it was on the Hero), there is still a use for PDANet.
PDANet allows you to share the internet via a Bluetooth DUN connection.
Regards,
Dave
PDANet will have to be my choice as I'm running Windows 7 which doesn't play nicely with the standard USB tethering!!
i've been using pdanet as you need htc sync installed, and theres not htc sync for mac :/

Desire to use PC's internet

Is there anyway I can have my desire use my PC's internet when it is connected via usb?
At this stage I dont have wifi at work and cant use that method.
Essentially I want to reverse the direction of tethering when the phone is connected to my computer.
Thanks, Dean
Unfortunately, reverse tethering or connecting the phone through computer's Internet connection (through an ad hoc wifi) is not possible, which is quite annoying. It would be nice if this type of feature, although highly unlikely, could be incorporated an upcoming ROM update for example.
That is annoying, especially since I could do this with my old WM - although thanks for the reply and info.
I wonder if it could be done through an app perhaps.
Cheers, Dean

Yes it's extremely annoying. I had this on my HD and HD2, but i really don't know why HTC could not incorporate this with the Desire. Afterall, it's a desirable (excuse pun) feature.
it has nothing to do with your phone, since it all depends on the host computer. On mac: you can do it easily by sharing your internet connection in system preferences.

maybe i misunderstood you, but its perfectly possible to make an adhoc wifi network, and connect to the internet on your desire

it has everything to do with your phone. If the phone has no interface for it, it won't work.
Can't say whether it works or not, just saying that it does not depend solely on your computer

odd, because i use it nearly everyday
So does this mean I can do it or not ?
Do I need and ad-hoc wifi network - what exactly is this ?
Thanks

If your computer has a wifi card (laptops usually do, desktops don't) you can create a local network and connect your desire to it.
No idea if it's possible over a wire
You don't need to create an ad-hoc network, just download connectify and use it as a hotspot on your laptop, then connect the Desire to the hotspot you just created and that's it.

Ahh that is handy!
Thanks for the tip
I created an adhoc network following this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx
The host laptop itself can see the adhoc network, but desire cannot.
Any ideas?
Maybe I'm wrong but AFAIK Desire can't 'see' ad-hoc networks, only access points. You can get internet from PC, but only using Connectify under Windows 7 or by using advanced magic under Linux.
Am I right or something has changed lately?
BTW: does anybody share internet from Linux? Any suggestions?
As far as i know, you can only see an ad-hoc network if you have the desire rooted and change some files somewhere (can't remember which ones...), either way the next best thing is to use some kind of software that creates an Wifi Access Point.
I don't get it: why would you want to connect to the internet via your PC instead of directly connecting to your WiFi router ?
Maybe when you only have a LAN-connection?
Or Maybe when your in Work and only have a Lan Setup
and want to access / download things on your phone,
Reverse USB tethering would be AMAZING!!!!!

Stupid me, just hadn't realized that still not everyone has a WiFi capable router nowadays...
The problem with ad-hoc internet sharing is that your host PC still needs a WiFi connection. You can't use internet through USB. I've tried it yesterday at work (yes, for the Froyo update ), but no succes.
Having a smartphone in a country with high mobile data costs is like having a Ferrari to do your local grocery shopping Fortunately I'll have unlimited mobile internet next week. So I can finally use my Desire as intended.

[Q] HTC TP2 Hotspot won't Connect Android Tablet

Hey Guys,
I just got a Motorola Xoom Tablet and it's not allowing me to use my mobile's hotspot to connect to the internet. I use my phone for everything. It even connects my laptop and all other devices.
My device is on WinMo 6.5 (HTC Tilt 2)
Can anyone help me solve this?
The issue is on your tablet. Android devices by default cannot connect to adhoc (non-infrastructure) networks.
I think with some supplicant hacks, your Xoom would be able to connect to an adhoc network.
The only problem is that the Xoom I have is the Family Edition. The bootloader is unlockable and there is no way around it as of now.
However, the wifi hotspot provided by an Android phone connects to the tablet without a problem. I just tried it on a friend's phone and it worked like a charm.
Would there be a cab/app that can change the mode of the wifi output on my WM phone?
It would suck to upgrade my cell phone just to have this work..

Just use Android then.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1171052
AFAIK there's no way in WinMo to put up an infrastructure network. On Android all the third party wifi tethering solutions are adhoc as well, only the built-in wifi tethering app works as an infrastructure network.
Just be warned, the built-in wifi hotspot feature has a tendency to suck wind when you try to disable it. IIRC it works great up until that point.
I'll try this now and see what happens..
Thanks..

Have you had any additional luck?
I am running a TP2 with NRG and I have same issue trying to connect
an EVO View to the TP2.
Before I go changing phones (I like the TP2 for most of my biz stuff), I thought
I would try to find out if maybe you got an easy solution??
Thanks

Just use Android as I suggested as well. It will allow you to put up a native infrastructure AP, which you should be able to connect to on your Evo View.
Or, you can fix the Evo View to access ad-hoc networks. Either way.

Tether to Tablet

I hope this is in the correct section, to me it is a question.
I have the ET4G and am getting a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 16G from work. It is wifi only.
I am running unnamed rom on EG30
I know I should be able to use the hotspot hack to tether the tablet.
I don't have a great knowledge of bluetooth as I have never really used it.
Can I pair the phone to the tablet and tether that way also?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but again, I don't have a great knowledge of bluetooth and how it works or what it can do.
Thank you in advance for the help.
Not a dumb question at all. I believe the hotspot hack is wifi only. There is an app called "wireless tether" which I believe at one point had Bluetooth tether but is only wifi now. Bluetooth is a different kind of radio. Google it to find out the exact difference. Is there any particular reason you want to pair it with Bluetooth?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Using my Evo to tether when I had my tab was pretty easy using the Sprint hot spot. All you really need to do is start it and use the wifi setting on the tab to connect. Make sure you get the password from your device.
I never really had much success with Bluetooth tether to share the internet connection. Transferring files was pretty straightforward.
Wifi tether app (I can upload but you really should go by their site and read up on it) required adhoc support on the GT, as I couldn't get secured to run with the Evo. May be a bit different with the GS2.
Really, if you have the native hot spot running, use it. Will work with little effort and I found it reliable.
Thank you both for the help.
Wasn't really looking to use blue tooth to tether, just wondering if it was in some way better. I guess more wondering if it would just use the phone signal to connect to Sprint network where the tablet wouldn't.
I have the hoyspot hack up and running fine, that is what I use for my laptop all the time. Why pay the cable company $60 a month.
I guess I was just wondering if one was better.
Thank you both for the help.

[Q] Cyanogenmod USB Tethering Wildfire S

hello boyz, yesterday I managed to put [ROM] Unofficial Cyanogenmod 7.2.0-RC0-marvel-KANG (2.3.7) on my phone and I love it but...
I have problems with USB Tethering, I want to share my internet connection with my phone but soon as I connect it I lose conection on pc and there is no conection on the phone too, drivers seems to be installed, in device manager I checked and pc reckognize it, I know it something small and stupid, anyone know the solution, please, in about one month I will make wireless in my home but in that period I need this ??!
thank U,
cheers !
Do you have a tethering plan with your mobile network? Because temporarily kicking you off data might be their anti-tethering technique.
That's what mine does (Three), you can get around it by using a tethering program that masks your usage such as pdanet.
