I have rooted my Sprint Samsung Epic 4g Touch and flashed the Starburst Rom. I then installed the latest version of android-wifi-tether (3.7 I think), my question is am I able to share the 4g connection via tether or just the 3g? Starting tethering seems to kill the 4g connection?

Which version of Wifi Tether are you using exactly? Is it 2.7 or 3.0 or 3.1 beta something? Mine doesn't do that at all

3.1 Beta7, should I try a different version?
So I should be able to share my 4g with my Xoom?

Well, I have used 3.1 beta 6 tons of times and it doesn't do any of the things you mentioned. The older versions forced you to turn off 4g then tether then turn back on 4g but that was fixed. Try the one I mentioned and if it doesn't work, maybe its a ROM or kernel issue

Since the AOKP rom has the new kernel incorporated into it i decided to flash it
i was previously on Calkulin's rom 1.6 (GB) with the sprint hotspot hack and i was wondering if there is some type of hotspot hack on aokp or something like it
I've tried to get wifi tether and foxfi to work....but they dont like me

Wow, i'm sorry. (smh @ myself) I just switched to M'ICS and Foxfi doesn't work for me either. it worked for my on GB. I have the Sprint HotSpot and that works. I know you don't have it but have you searched in the devolopment section? I believe there was a thread on 3g/4g hotspot hack. I've never used wifi teather. Sorry I couldn't help you more.
Edit: the hotspot hack is only for FF18 stock.

Foxfi or wireless tether from google. I am not sure what your settings may be but I ran both of them flawlessly. Do not use a password and see what happens

I think this is the 5th time I've posted this in a week. On ics use wifi tether for root users from market. Set your device in the app to galaxy nexus cdma to make it work.
worked for me!

Yes. I just upgraded to FF18. Foxfi did not work but wifi tether did. Although it did not work set to galaxy nexus but does work when set to auto.
Go figure? Thanks for the tip!
So I thought I would report that I got Wifi Tether for Root Users to work on AOKP M6 by setting the device profile to galaxy nexus.
Also, I've found that using the EL29 modem gives the fastest speeds. I was testing 250-300 kbps down with FF18, I get 1200+ kbps on EL29.
You know there's a profile for our device...

was wondering if anyone else is having problems with wifi tether root users....i updated jellybomb domination to v7 and now my tether isnt working someone help me...or recommend a tether that works wit rooted sg3...
WiFi Tether for Root will not currently work on that ROM. It does not work on any ROMs that are based on Touchwiz Jelly Bean. I have heard that there are some that work for Bluetooth tether, but not WiFi. You will just have to wait for an update.
Update will probably coming soon. Since OTA is out and there is attempts to work on this from the devs of wifi tether. So hopefully soon will come out with an update. But iv also heard that jellybean touchwiz has removed the driver for wifi tether but how could u use sprint hotspot if that was true. So confusion goin on bout this but at least there is progress on this dilemma!!!

Just flash an ICS based rom or CM10 when you need to tether or as a daily. I'm sure as soon as an update comes out it will be all over this site so check it often.
Try this link. Works for me.

I know we have made big strides in finally being able to tether now on jellybean now which is awesome, thanks to TREVE. So what I wanted to know is would we finally be able to get the sprint native hotspot to work now as a hack. Would it be possible for anyone to work on this. I know questions may came up as why I would want that. My answer to do that is I believe its more stable, also it doesn't cause my phone to battery to go hot and I do not have to reboot my device when I would like to use regular wifi for things such like wifi-direct etc. After using wifi tether if I would like to connect to my home router I would have to reboot phone. Another thing is that there are apps that require that you use sprint hotspot such as KIES AIR which I use from time t time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ig=f anyone wants to know Im stock rooted LG7 odexed.

No. This does seem like the way to go, and I'm sure it will come about eventually. We went through this on the Epic4G as well, and someone did find a way to make it work, though it took a long time.

Yeah I was looking for this today when my home DSL dropped, as I had it previously on the Epic 4g and Epic Touch.
rujelus22 had a great thread that explained how he enabled the hack for the Epic touch here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760712
Also, there is a JB leak for the Epic touch which did hotspot tether by default (it didn't check for the plan) so maybe we could even just take that APK and put it on the S3...
Would any developers be able to follow what he did?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1760712
Or would the settings be slightly different since we are using lte devices

I'm interested as well, it took about a month after release of the evo 3d to get a hacked sprint hotspot app. I wonder if any of the devs from the evo 3d could point us in the right direction

Sac's Rom with working multiview has an awesome tether app. I'm not sure it if it is a themed Treve or hacked Sprint but it works perfectly and is very clean and can be started from quick settings.

I've decompiled framework and am looking for the statements to change but no luck yet. Anyone out there willing to assist me in finding what needs to change?
Attachments:
*a logcat of the tether process starting and then being killed - look around line 79 to see the hotspot starting to get killed
*the CDMADataconnectiontracker smali files decompiled from the MA6 deodexed stock rom (thanks Freeza) (unzip and open with a text editor)
Bump, I've been looking at these files along with someone in the ET4G forum and we've been at a standstill for a while. It would be really nice to get some extra eyes on this problem. Not only would a hacked hot spot give a way to infrastructure tether, but would most likely open up native usb and bluetooth tethering (touchwiz) as well. And the edits would likely be very similar on the vzw S3. In other words kill a bunch of birds with one stone.
I know the treve hot spot works and is an awesome solution for most use cases, but there are other things we could do with a proper hacked hot spot as provided on the Epic and ET4G (prior to JB)

If you ask me. Native Hotspot can't beat Wi-Fi Tether. Access control, adhoc, infrastructure, different kinds of network... etc.

Downloading mb1 base now to send the latest files. Note there is not an APK per-se, the hot spot is provided by the framework files which I'll send your way. There are some good references linked in earlier posts which detail how this was hacked before.

I would try starting with the ONLY 2 working sprint TW roms with native hotspot unlocked ::: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39496130&postcount=7
Well we might as well just pull the framework files from that right? Install as a Sprint rom and then nandroid, then pull the stuff

If you could really do that so we can add it to all TW roms that would be AWESOME .... and i have no clue remember im just a NOOB but would do anything to help out! im currently running the Cspire nandroid just for the native tether as we speak only its ICS just realized
Simple question in need of a simple answer: is the reason why the app doesn't work on 4.3 because we need insecure, modded kernels with iptables, etc?
I completely rely on tethering to get online lol
thanks for the replies guys
not sure about all of that. but another member pm'd me with a mod for the 4.3 roms that allows tethering. ill post it soon, but he msy have already put it up in the rom thread.
it should help anyone on a 4.3 TW rom.

Thanks for the reply doc! He has already posted it in yours or Saranai's thread (not sure which one) but it ended up killing my 2.5gb of tethering instead of masking it as phone data. When I use TrevE 's Wifi Tether app coupled with a VPN it just shows as phone data usage and not tethering, giving me unlimited data since I'm on the $70 plan. Make sense? haha
was it sn older one? im not seeing it. itd be posted by theArtizan.

Might have been an older one. The one I used was uped by a Spanish guy I think, or he had a Spanish sounding name. Can you give me link or a way to find this post by TheArtizan? Highly appreciated
Is there a way to tether for free on 4.3 stock TW rom? Even if it's not using TrevE Wifi Tether? I really need a way to tether on my Galaxy S3 with 4.3. Since I upgraded last week I haven't managed TrevE or any other tethering app to work on my S3.

Wouldn't risk it... make a backup though. I believe its safe for all variants of the s3 but could be wrong. You could test it haha
For those interested, working Wi-Fi tether on the Virgin Mobile Galaxy S3 build MK5 4.3. I assume this app would work for those not able to get Wireless Tether to work on 4.3
