I'm thinking of getting a kindle fire for purely video playback (mostly because of the video playback issues - ref1, ref2, ref3, ref4).
Anyway, I am looking for a cost-effective way to watch 720p MKV files (though I guess I'd be willing to use ffmpeg to copy the video and transcode the audio to aac and put it into an mp4 container for playback), and I was hoping the Kindle Fire might be capable of 720p video playback without stuttering or lagging.
I thought I read somewhere that the cm7 build for the kindle fire supported hardware-accelerated decoding of h.264 video, so perhaps this is better asked of the CM7 folks? Just trying to do my homework before I shell out $199.
Thanks in advance!
Using an app like mobo player you can watch 720p or 1080p videos. I'm currently using mp4 video format. I love it.

I'm currently running CM7(from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390773) and tried a few video apps (fresh build of VLC, MoboPlayer, Rock Player). Hardware acceleration does not seem to work. I get errors saying "format is not supported with the system player"... and they switch back to software decoding which works, for low-bitrate files.
A couple of 720p show I had (all around 3mbps) would slutter or unsync after a few seconds. I haven't really dug to find out why it's doing that (x264 file?).
Anyone else could help here?
I have not been able to find anything that will work unless it's an x264 encoded MP4 stored on locally on the KF. It's easy enough to re-encode .mkv using Handbreak, it's just time consuming and kind of a pain due to the amount of local storage. I use Emit to stream over WiFi either at home or anywhere I have a WiFi connection and it works pretty well. It does have issues time to time with 1080p but 720p for the most part is perfectly fine.
Both Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD can only play MP4, 3GP and VP8 (.webm). That is, if we try to play other video formats like AVI, Xvid, DivX, WMV, MKV, FLV, MOV, M4V, MXF, WTV, MPG, ASF and etc on Kindle Fire (HD), it will ends in fail. Sometime, we even encounter difficulty in play MP4 on Kindle Fire.
Luckily, Bigasoft Total Video Converter updates to support Kindle Fire! Acting as the powerful Kindle Fire Video Converter, Bigasoft Total Video Converter can fast convert all kinds of videos including WMV, AVI, Xvid, DivX, MOV, MKV, MPEG, VOB, FLV, F4V, WTV, DVR, AVCHD, MXF, RMVB, RM, MVI, M4V, and etc to Kindle Fire or Kindle Fire HD supported MP4 format in SD or HD. It also enables to convert Kindle Fire unsupported MP4 to Kindle Fire friendly MP4. Besides, the powerful Kindle Fire Converter also helps to convert video or music video to Kindle Fire supported audio format or helps to convert other audio format like FLAC, SHN, QCP, M4A, AIFF, Apple Lossless and etc to Kindle Fire MP3 or WAV.
Just google search Step by Step Guide on How to Convert Video to Play AVI, WMV, MKV, MP4, MOV, FLV, and WMA on Kindle Fire HD, Kindle Fire with Bigasoft Total Video Converter
You will find a simple way
Try CM10 with BSplayer

I got best results using free version of BSplayer and CM10 roms. AVCHD 1080 videos from SONY HD camera are played in slowmotion over WiFi, but had no problem with 720 videos.
Whaaat?
Using dice player I stream 720 x264 TVs/movies across my plan all the time. Framerate is always good though sometimes the sound doesn't work but I haven't investigated the audio codec that gives it trouble.

I had always liked Mobo player it's free and has every codec I have ever herd of.
Remember to give THANKS when THANKS are due.
As I know, most tablets and phones do not support to play MKV file. You have two ways to solve the problem
1.Download a MKV player in your kindle fire
2. Convert your MKV fles to the kindle fire supported format like mp4. and the transfer it to your kindle fire.

Anyone has the new Kindle Fire HD 6 want to put MKV files to Kindle Fire HD 6 for playback? Based on my experience, same as the Kindle fire, it can't support MKV format natively. What I can do is to download a mkv player for Kindle Fire HD 6 or convert MKV to MP4. Here is a simple guide for Kindle Fire HD 6, from which you can learn how to play MKV, AVI, VOB on Kindle Fire HD 6 without any incompatible issues.

Ultimately, what is the best video player for the HTC HD now?
Problem as the phone was out that the core player play good films, but does not support all audio codecs (it is a film without sound) and does not support subtitles.
Free version of TCPMP do play all movies whit sound and subtitles, but movies go very slowly rather than smooth.
So my question is, since my information is from 4-5 months before, are there any new development on the subject. Is there a player who goes smoothly converted video and subtitles supported?
If there is such a miracle, I'll be happy to drop a link?
What is the latest version of core player and are solved the problems there?
Latest version was 1.3 I reckon. They plan on introducing AC3 audio codec support which is the most widely used audio codec for ripped movies etc in a 1.5.x version.
But yeah, Coreplayer is at the moment still the most top notch player imo.
This is a list of the supported audio and video codecs:
Audio : MP3, MP2, AAC, MKA, WMA, Midi*, WAV, OGG, Speex, WAVPACK, TTA, FLAC, MPC, AMR, ADPCM, ALaw, MuLaw, G.729, GSM
Video: H.264 (AVC), AVCHD, MKV, MPEG-1, MPEG-4 part 2 (ASP), DivX, XviD, WMV*, Theora*, Dirac*, MJPEG, MSVIDEO1
Another Coreplayer user here!
Works great for me.

It all depends how you encode the video files... I can play a whole movie without any lag.
yes, but I want to play unconverted video..
The main reason why I use coreplayer is because it can play unconverted video, I have too much video to even be coverted and it's generally just too much of a hassle to me. You can't watch a 4.7 gig dvd unconverted if that's what you mean but dvd ripped avi filea from like 700 mb play without any lag at all using coreplayer.
I installed the alpha version of VLC media player and was able to directly play a 1080P WMV file which is not currently supported by Amazon media player. Playback wasn't entirely smooth, but not sure if this is due to a alpha software that may not support the video accleration features of the Fire. In any case, this shows that VLC will allow us to play other formats than what Amazon is supporting.
Anyone try TetherGPS?
Has anyone tried a simple .AVI file?
yea, the bundled dash limits showing most video files moved to the device in the videos tab. This being said if you install mxplayer or any other relevant vid player and use root explorer or even go launcher playing most divx / avi videos is a breeze.
Well doesnt the nook Tablet have the same processor and stuff that the Fire does. I know the Nook Tablet can play 1080p so why couldnt the fire?
The VLC app for Android is in Alpha version so maybe trying another fully tested and released player known to work with Nook at 1080P is in order to compare apples to apples.
I wasn't able to play an XviD encoded AVI, but sideloading Moboplayer (com.clov4r.android.nil-1.apk) works great.

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded moboplayer pro (free) from the Android Market and it played the 1080P WMV much smoother than the VLC player alpha.
Hi,
i have problems with 1080p MKV and MP4 playback.
When i playback a movie with 1080p and Hardware Decoding, I get terrible blocking and freezing (strainge colours, green Pixel and so on).
I tested with MX-Player (H/W+), VLC Player, Plex and XBMC. The result is always the same.
When i use the same file in ts oder m2ts - Format, then everything is ok.
So i tested to create the mkv and mp4 File with different Tools: mkvmerge, ffmpeg, makemkv, mp4box and so on..
Always Errors and terrible playback.
Is there a trick or can the device handle HD only in *.ts without Errors???

I'm able to play 1080p mkv files and mp4 files without issue. I actually download a lot of 1080p movie trailer in mp4 format to my tablet. However, I normally use Archos Video player or BS player though as the hardware acceleration appears to be better on them than other video players I've tried.
I use mx player and never have an issue, have you tried the software codec for mx?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Try archos and the achos free codec pack.
MX player
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda premium
so, i tested more:
Archos has the best Performance. you only see sometimes litte stuttering. But the PGS-Subtitles are not shown -((
BS-Player has Picture -Errors
MX-Player in S/W and H/W Looks ok, but not enough Performance for full framerate Decoding.H/W+ Decoder has enogh Performance, but the same Errors in the Picture like BS-Player, Plex, XBMC abd so on.
I don't understand why... the Problem ist not all movies... and this are not the movies withe the highets Bitrate. convert to ts looks good.
I put a short sample online.. mail me, if you are interessed to verify and help... I can not post the link here.. (new user board-rule)
I just streamed a 1080p mkv from my WD Live network drive with no stuttering or sound issues. I use Archos player and the free codec pack.

hey, stehohrhase, has this resolved with different player? I am tempted to buy p605, but I don't want to buy one that has issue with video playback.

i guess is not the player... TS is just the container... this device can handle 1080p
no issues
I use MK player with no issues even in FULL HD movies!
Maybe your files (muvies) are stored in ExtStorage (microSD).
Have you check your microSD card speed?
Try Dice Player its one of the best players out there, but for DTS audio you need "libffmpeg.so" from the attachment below.
Other than that try a test sample with video stream only and see if it plays fine, if it does then mux in the other streams one at a time until the problem returns.
10 bits encoding maybe?
MY audio book (AAC format) is not working in Kindle fire. Please suggest if there are any app support playback of AAC files in Kindle HD.
Basically I'm looking for a cheap 9-10 inch tablet to watch downloaded TV shows on (720p h264 .mkv / standard definition xvid .avi). I currently own an Asus TF101 tablet (nvidia tegra), and it is somewhat picky about what h264 content it can play without stuttering, and typically fails to play downloaded shows due to specific requirements it has about how the h264 video is encoded (something to do with I-frames, not really sure on the specifics).
Anyway, I was wondering how well the KFHD8.9 handles h264 video, (and if it can still play standard definition xvid content like my TF101 can) with a player like MX Player. Does anyone use this tablet to watch downloaded TV shows, how well does it work?
So far I haven't had any problems watching h264 videos, but I've also got a copy of VLC on mine so between that and the Archos player, I'm pretty well covered for just about any codec.
