So I wanted to try and mount my usb drive to my Galaxy Nexus. I just got the usb host cable today. I downloaded an app to try and see if it would list the device there, which indeed it did. I posted screen shots of it below. I watched a video on the Galaxy SII which has the usb host cable information pop right up when you attach the device. Also I am using a CDMA/LTE Verizon Galaxy Nexus with the CM9 Kang ROM. Android version: 4.0.3 CyanogenMod version: 9.0.0-RCO-GN-CMDA-KANG-01132012. Maybe they removed that capability in the ROM for stability reasons? I would be fine updating if that is needed because I have had this ROM for a week or two now and I imagine there is more stable CM9 version by now.
Do I just need to manually mkdir and mount the drive? I was hoping I wouldn't have to do something like that, although that seems like it might be easy to automate with an app or script.

Mouse was just simple plug and go:
Keyboard worked just fine as well.
Also here is the Galaxy SII video I was referring to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=giJXF5pIITc
try the app "[root] StickMount (G.Nexus)" from the market.
works like a charm for me.
galaxy nexus seems not to mount usb drives automatically, so we need the app to do that.
Update: I did try this app that Stigy was using.
[root] StickMount (G.Nexus) https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount
http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus/433685-so-you-want-more-storage-space-2.html
It made the usbStorage folder for me, but it appears the drive is empty according to my file browser. Maybe it is the how the drive is formatted. I'll play around with it and see if I get any success.
Either way I thought this was available without root. I was under the impression it was built in to ICS and possibly Honeycomb too.
Edit: Guess I should have refreshed the page. Wow quick reply. Thanks. I'm messing with it now as you can probably read.
Edit 2: Just need that StickMount app and a Fat32 formatted drive. (I actually searched for it in the market, but it didn't show up for me) The one I was trying was NTFS, my bad. Well hopefully this will help someone else from feeling like and idiot. lol =)
for me fat32 formatted drives worked. ext2/3/4 should work too.
ntfs formatted drives only work if there's the appropriate driver present (which isn't the case for the galaxy nexus).
I'm not sure if there's any possibility to add a ntfs driver to android. maybe one of the devs has further insight into that.
edit: as far as I understood it, mounting usb drives should work out of the box for the galaxy nexus. but it doesn't for some reason (bug?). so we need this app and it needs root priviledges to mount a drive
^ Ya I was about to search that up soon. It isn't that big of a deal to me to have NTFS, but it would be handy since it is a common file system. Maybe I'll just try to add ext2/3/4 support to my windows install.
Another side question, is there a maximum supported size? I could try an external hdd with its own power I guess. Although I don't have any available to test with atm, and my biggest flash drive is 16GB. Is this a good excuse to go buy a bigger flash drive?
Well I got a little daring, wasn't sure how this would work out. But I plugged my Galaxy Nexus into my HP Touchpad running CM7. Told the HP Touchpad to turn on its USB storage and then told the Galaxy Nexus to mount the storage. IT WORKED. Woot. So at least 32GB is supported. =)
Sorry if it seems a bit off topic. I just like to share and document for others, figure it can't hurt.

Hi,
I was wondering if it will be possible to use Ubuntu for Android with the Galaxy Nexus?
I know it has Dual-Core with more than 1GHz, more than 512 MB RAM and more than 2GB storage space.
But what about
- Video acceleration: shared kernel driver with associated X driver; Open GL, ES/EGL
- HDMI: video out with secondary frame buffer device
- USB host mode
And do you think it will be possible to connect an external storage to the ubuntu system? In the end 2 GB will not be enough I guess
Thank you!
If someone "hacks" it for other phones, the GN will probably be one of the first to receive it. :-D
That's the beauty of the Nexus line.

@Valynor, what do you mean by "hacks it for other phones"? As I understand it "Ubuntu for Android" is supposed to be a free app in market that is supposed to run on as many smartphones as possible. The only problem I see with the GN is it not having an SD-Card (so it could be there is no USB-host-mode implemented for the phone) and it does not have "read" HDMI support. And I have no idea what kind of video acceleration its got.
So the question isn't weather someone can hack the app but weather it will run the Galaxy Nexus
@MS., Sorry! I am new to this forum :/ Is there a way to move the thread?

No, the "Ubuntu for Android" is not an App that you can just install. It needs to be tailored to the hardware (and software) on your device. It's more likely to come integrated with a custom ROM.
I'm confident someone will do it sooner or later, though.
Oh...turns out that was some wrong information I had there. Well thank you lots for explaining and I will be waiting for that ROM
I don't want to kill your hopes, but...
An HDMI connexion is mandatory on Ubuntu for Android.
The keyboard and mouse are used on the micro-USB USB Host and the video goes (normally) through the HDMI port.
Note: There can be an HDMI output on Gnex, thanks to MHL port, but when you use the Micro USB as MHL, there is no way to make the USB port to work..
So maybe there is a solution, meaning that USB and mouse will be connected with Bluetooth, but that's not a good thing!
Believe me, all the demos are made with a Motorola Atrix and not a GNex, there is a reason ;-)
Dig up the Q.
GN will be the first receiving ubuntu. Just by downloading it on the ubuntu website.
For the USB/HDMI issue above remember that the GNex have a dock connection with one providing HDMI out, you have your usb free for a OTG cable that allow you to use mouse and/or keyboard (haven't tested but you probably can use Keyboard and Mouse at the same time with a dongle).
BTW and IMHO I'll be more looking after Ubuntu for phone than Ubuntu for Android.

It's no apps2sd, but it works for now with some draw backs. Honestly I'm looking forwards to getting the Apps2ExtSD2 working on these things. Seems a bit more stable and less confusing. I'll explain the confusing part in a sec...
Anyway, you can get the app and read all about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262 and major thanks to slig for this! Send him some thanks as well if you like this!

It basically tells you how to set the directories correctly so that it works with our phones and how to get started in setting up the directories.
I recommend moving the Android folder, the gameloft folder, and any other large directories, such as CoPilot maps.
Proof that it works...

If you do the math there... I have 10.95gb total and 8.14gb free meaning I'm only using 2.81gb of the internal storage... yet when you add up the applications and misc files you get a whopping 10.56gb. And as you can see, i've got some rather large games installed:
So far the phone hasn't given me any errors about being out of space. And note, my SD card says I'm using 18.28gb. I do have a few gb worth of music and misc files on it along with everything else. Oh, and the scandisk 64gb extreme card works perfectly in this phone, even when formatted to exFAT.
So far the one draw back I've found is that large games slow down a bit on the loading. For example, Nova3 starts up in a few minute vs <1 before this. I'm assuming this is attributed to the fact that while it's an "extreme" card, its still not as fast as the built in, plus there's probably a small lag due to the directory binding.
All my games still work like normal from what I can tell. Haven't tried every single one of them yet. But Nova3, and CoPilot work as if nothings changed (minus what I just mentioned about the slowness).
Now... the confusing part... so technically you do not have to pick the option to unbind when connected to usb. You can still browse the external and internal memory on your computer. BUT, while the space will show accurately, the folders will not. For example, if I goto /extsdcard/dirctorybinder/Android/ it only shows a few config files. If I goto /storage/Android/ it shows all the game files and says its 6gb+ in size.
You can avoid that by click the "handle usb connection". Then everything shows like it should. but this may cause a few issues if any apps are running that use a directory you moved. You could take the time and set each one up, one by one for only the large games that you need to move and know you wont normally use while plugged into the computer.
Hope this helps people who were suffering from the small storage space problem on these phones!

To my best knowledge, there is no way to use the good old USB Mass Storage. In 4.1, Google remove UMS, leaving only this stupid MTP mode.
What doesn't work well, file transfers?
Which OS are you using?
I haven't had problems with Windows 7, it automatically detects the Note and installs the drivers. It is MTP, but it works well for me.
I actually have more than one problem with this, even though im using Windows 7.
Sometimes it doesnt even recognize the device and simply keeps saying "Hardware ID not found" or something until the PC is rebooted.
I used to use my phone as a portable mass storage device, usually carrying my Files for school around with me, but thats COMPLETELY out of the picture now, because its not even recognized without me installing Samsung Kies first, which im certainly not allowed to do at school.
Simply opening a rar-archive and dragging the files straight to my phone doesnt work anymore either and i have to extract it to my pc first.
Nor can i let downloaders download straight to my phone storage, since its not properly recognized....
...and so forth.
I honestly think its an abomination and i cant POSSIBLY imagine why anyone would want something as aweful as this.
That's strange. I've connected my Note II to several Windows 7 computers, all without Kies, and all have automatically detected it correctly.
Have you tried installing the drivers without Kies (using the GN2 Toolkit for example)?

Yes actually I am finding the same problem! I use mine for school too. It's not only that though, my car's CD player (which does not support Bluetooth) has a USB input which used to work fine with my HTC One XL. However it does not recognise my Note 2 and too many files on my Portable harddrive to scan through. Some people might say "use a USB thumbdrive" but to that I say- well, essentially this is what a phone should be able to do, plus it's far more convenient to carry around (as it's always on me!)
Have you tried any of the ums tools from the market. This one appears to mount internal or external.

SG USB Mass Storage Enabler allows you to export your microSD card over USB as a Mass Storage device. It will never be able to export the internal storage on the device.
I originally made this app for myself for the SGS3, as I needed some more flexibility in mounting/unmounting than Easy UMS offered. However, I backed out from releasing it as I thought it wasn't a nice gesture towards Easy UMS's dev.
Features:
Allows you to use your microSD card as a USB Mass Storage device.
Shortcuts on your homescreen to easily enable/disable USB Mass Storage mode.
Warns the user if they try to disable Mass Storage mode without unmounting/ejecting on the PC side.
Tested working on:
Samsung Galaxy Note II (GT-N7100)
Samsung Galaxy SIII (GT-I9300)
Samsung Grand Duos (GT-I9082) - Thanks to wan Mohd in Play Store reviews.
Samsung Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500) - Thanks to taiseer999 in the replies below.

I've loaded this and tried it out. Works well from what I've experienced. For most stuff the MTP works fine, but for stuff like Visual Basic projects, it MTP does not play nice. This, made the phone act like a flash drive, and I could load those same projects directly from the phone; in MTP, I had to copy the project to the computer first.
The only issue I've encountered, and it was cosmetic, the landscape view needs adjusting because the text and buttons overlap.
I didn't try reloading Samsung drives to see if it helps with the hardward ID issue for ADB. I assume it will not.
Nice
Nice I like it you said that's for the s4

Has anyone successfully loaded movies from an external HDD mounted using stickmount ?
If yes:
What external Harddrive do you have? Powered/Unpowered / brand etc.....
Any problems with large files?
Im wanting to playback large 1080p files from external, some up to 10GB and want to make sure there isnt any playback problems. If there is, how do you playback these files without problems?
Thanks in advance

I'm using this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822178434
No problems with any 1080p files so far, I believe I've even tried a BD25 image, but that might have been from my NAS, not the local drive. I will say I've had one movie playing on the FireTV and the FireTV was serving up another movie to another device via FTP over WiFi from the same USB drive, both seemed to be playing fine.
thanks, i have something similar already, wasnt sure it would work without power.
I wanted to get a 4TB powered HDD but unsure how that will run.
ok i read on another forum about someone having problems loading up a 2TB HDD. Maybe because not enough power?
I was thinking about connecting by 1 of these so the power is supplied to the hub:

This is the exact setup I'm running. Works great.
The only thing I would mention, is that my FireTV doesn't reboot correctly with the powered USB hub plugged in. Which has been reported by many others as well. If I power off the unit, and power it back on with the powered USB hub plugged in, it sits at a static black and white Amazon screen. I have to unplug the hub and reboot again to make it work.
Otherwise, this setup has been working perfectly.
