Well, I finally tried out my Mobile Hotspot service I subscribe to from Verizon. I will admit that the speed from the 4G LTE is nice on both my laptop and Transformer Prime. However, the battery life on the Nexus really took a nose dive after using this service with my Prime for about 1hr yesterday during a meeting.
Does anyone have some tips on conserving the battery during this type of use?
about how many hours can u get with wifi hotspot on?
i can get about 3-4hr on my nexus one with constant use... if its on but idling the phone can last 6-8hr
thats not using phone, just the wifi device tethered to the nexus one

For those of you who have a good 4g signal, do you get better battery life on 4g or wifi? I have read some old threads on other phones and other variations of S2 and the general thinking is that wifi has better battery life but thats different hardware. I'm running stock rooted EL29 and battery drain seems about the same so far when I have good 4g.
I don't get 4g anymore since my work moved, but when I did, 4g sucked the battery like a baby on a bottle.
I always have wifi on, 24/7 and am actually connected probably 21 hours out of the day. I get an average of 18-24 hours on normal usage. I don't stream anything...

Second that I have 4g where I live and I also have wifi at home I have been testing the last couple days and it seems 4g has suck the battery a whole lot faster then my wifi

Thanks guess I will just stick with wifi when I can. 4g speeds have nice peaks but they seem to be all over the place and at times slower than 3g
When I'm at school (5 days a week) most of my classes are in a building where I do not get a lot of reception, aka, my battery gets killed by the phone to keep up the signal. I do get reception, around 1-2 bars, but that still drains the battery extremely fast. Is there any app or something that I can do to help reduce the amount of battery drain?
I don't want to put the phone into air plane mode because I can still send and receive text messages, but it's just very slow.
Have you tried putting it in cdma only mode?

You could save a lot of battery life by either connecting to a wifi hotspot (if available) or by turning off background data. The problem your phones having is that it has to turn the gain way up on its cellular radio in order to transmit and receive data. By reducing the amount of background data usage (or off loading it to another network with better signal--i.e. wifi) you'll save a lot of juice.
If you can't do either, there are some things you can do with Tasker to reduce data usage to windows of time instead of always on. May be something to consider.

Drop it into 2G only or connect to WiFi.

He's in Canada, so using the GSM model.
Give juice defender a try. It used to almost double the battery life on my old X10 when I worked in a building that I could only get 1 bar at best.

JD sucks on the Nexus, unless it has gotten an update since last month.. WiFi doesn't want to reconnect. I've seen others say the same thing.

Hello there I'm looking for a reasonably priced unlocked Android phone to take abroad with me this coming fall. I won't be using data services so that being said, how long would the battery be expected to last with moderate to high usage? (good bit of texting, some calls/pictures, and some wifi Web browsing). Thanks! Searched around and couldn't find this bit of information.

How are you expecting to make calls? If you literally only have a voice-only SIM when you're there and you'll be using the phone heavily on WiFi, the battery life won't be drastically better than if you were on mobile data. The screen is the largest drain on the phone, and if you're still using data over WiFi you'll maybe get to 2 days of usage on a stock phone.

There's an option in settings to turn off data. You still get voice, you don't need to turn on airplane mode or get a voice-only sim.
But I agree, battery won't be drastically better, I have data turned off and my batt times have been similar to the average times posted here

Yes I know you can turn off data . I asked how he intends to make calls because if he will actually have a SIM in and connecting to towers for calls, battery life will not be drastically better than if he had data turned on. If, however, he was making VOIP calls over WiFi with airplane mode on, he'd likely see a large improvement in battery life.

Yeah I realize keeping the antenna on will consume battery...I would probably be surfing the Web on wifi for 30 minutes to an hour max each day. Should I look at getting the extended battery? As long as I can get a full day (18-24 hours) with moderate to high usage I'm fine.

So my stock JB 4.1.1 GSM Nexus is having some issues regarding the wifi, specifically the sleep policy. I have it set to turn off when the phone is sleeping but whenever I go to look at my battery consumption, it shows the wifi as being active all day long. Has anyone else experienced this/ can you reccomend a fix? Thanks!
Same problem here; wifi is always on for me on stock 4.1.1. Anyone have advice?

Not sure why you'd want to turn WiFi off when the screen is off?
But yes, the "advanced" settings on WiFi are a bit finnicky for people. I've noticed that they don't always stick. Just gotta try toggling it a few times over and over.

You think wifi consumes more juice than cellular radios do? or do you shut those down as well?

I know it does because my battery lasts longer when I manually shut off wifi.
Wifi will never consume more battery than the cellular radio.

Wifi consumes more battery idling. 3g consumes more battery surfing.

Over a whole day's use, if you're on WiFi the whole time you'll use less battery then if you're on the mobile network. The idle battery use is higher but your time connected to transfer data (and therefore battery used) is much much lower.
idling in 2g saves allot more battery than Wi-Fi
Turning off the phone is the best battery saver. But everyone knows wifi is the best option if you have it. 3g runs your battery down way faster. Even though most people have known this for yrs, its even in the tips section when you go into your sprint account. "Wifi to save battery" or something like that.
I use juice defender to turn off all radios when the screen is off. WiFi and 3g will pop back on within seconds of the screen being back on. I know not everyone finds juice defender useful, but I love it

Does anyone know if wifi calling being enabled has an effect on battery life one way or the other?
Thanks

You're welcome bud.
As i am new to the note 4 i wanted to see as well. Usually after i get off work i am hovering around 70% or so. Today i had wifi calling turned on. I have 1.5 hours of work left and i am at 80%. About an hour and a half screen in between news and forums. A couple of phone calls, games and txt. Looks to be an improvement for me! Normal signal is about half the bars at work so not the best or worst signal.
Ok. Dumb question. What is wifi calling for?
A good search on google will tell you everything you're looking for
Yeah. And the same amount time was wasted with your less than helpful response. I would like the opinions of those here.

Good info! Thanks hamagc
I use WiFi calling while I am at work, from 8:30-7:30 at night, still have about 40% of the battery left, I make great battery on WiFi calling. I also didn't do WiFi calling one time at work and the phone died within 6 hours. Noticed that the battery is saved by it not searching for a signal.
