This works and is easy.
1. Go to shipping-roms.com and download your applicable Rom, for your phone, from your service provider. Click on Android, scroll to bottom of list and click on "Vision", then scroll to the file called "RUU_Vision_BellMobility_WWE_1.34.666.1_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.18_M2_release_154437_signed.exe". This is the one you want!
2. Make sure you have HTC Sync installed on your Windows based laptop, this is what provides the driver for your usb to connect to your phone.
3. Make sure "USB Debugging" is set on your phone. It can be found by going to: Applications/Development, then check it off at the top.
4. Power Down Phone, or choose "restart" from your "rooted" phone and select "BootLoader" in the option list that comes up.
5. (If you chose bootloader from list as mentioned above, skip this step) With your phone powered down, hold the power button and "up" volume switch simultaneously to get to bootloader menu. This could take a few tries to get right. Keep trying, you'll get it. Hopefully though, you'll have the option in the "restart" menu of your rooted phone.
6. With "usb debugging" on and your phone in "bootloader" mode, it is time to fire up the executable file your downloaded in step 1. After it installs, you will get a grey screen program that shows your phone. Check the box and select next, on the next screen, check the box again and select next. Wait for the rewrite of the original ROM to your phone. You'll know it's working as your phone will display the HTC logo with a green progress bar.
Note: While the original ROM is being installed, your phone may power down a couple of times. No worries, it is expected behaviour. When the program is done, it will tell you it is finished, and your phone will reboot to it's fresh from Bell state.
Hope this helps. Wish these instructions were here when I had to do it. Lol!
Enjoy the Day!
If anyone is having luck with this, and this post was helpful, I could use the "Thank Yous". This allows me to post the direct links to the items you"ll need for unroots.
Actually i was getting ERR 155 but, it was because i was not on bootloader... thanks for the clear and easy to follow steps.
Now i got it working with stock Froyo!!

Can anyone tell me how to upgrade the ROM to Win Mobile 6.5? Show me the step by step please. Thank you.
Easy peasy!
1. Grab a WM6.5 ROM (For Zest/ASUS P565) i.e. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4763089
2. Extract the zap/rar so you have a .ABI file
3. Copy the .ABI to the root of a micriSD card. I use the one that came with the Zest for my flashing.
4. Insert the microSD card with the ROM on it into your Zest.
5. Connect your Zest to it's charger
6. Make sure the phone is turned off
7. Press and hold the "down arrow" on the cursor pad....don't let it go yet!
8. Turn the phone on, after the 1st splash screen you will get a colourful DOS type screen. YOU CAN LET GO OF THE CURSOR KEY NOW
The progress bar will part fill with red....followed by green....don't touch anything!
One the flash is complete the phone will reboot....let it reboot....and WAIT!
Eventually you will be prompted to tap the screen to set up the phone....wait a bit more (30 seconds) as the phone is still busy and will appear unresponsive.
Tap the screen, tap the cross hair 4 times....WAIT!
Leave the phone to finish setting its self up. Some software will auto install and eventually the phone will reboot.
You can now turn the phone off and insert your proper microSD card.....assuming you have a larger card you normally use.
You now need to:
Go to settings and configure each bit i.e. owner name, regional settings etc
You might also need to disable aircraft mode (some ROMS have it turned on by default). Go to wireless manager and tap "Phone".
Have fun
Okay I can't remember where I saw it and I just want to get the word around because in all the tutorials for how to root no one has mentioned this and it fixed my problem. On your S3 go to the phone keypad and dial *#7284# a screen will come up with "PhoneUtil" at the top. Make sure PDA is selected then press "Qualcomm USB Settings." Here you will see 7 options to choose from, you need to select "MTP + ADB," then press "OK." It should say "Saved!0" the number can change mine said "Saved!1" the first time I did it. Lastly use the Back button to exit. After you do this install your drivers and everything should work just fine. Hope this helps those who are having trouble and if this is already posted somewhere or the tutorials are updated with this step in then Mods feel free to delete I'll have no hard feelings.
1. Dial *#7284#
2. Select PDA
3. Press Qualcomm USB Settings
4. Select MTP + ADB
5. Press OK
6. Use back button to exit
Hope this helps.
This was in the IMEI back up thread as one of the first things to do before running the toolkit to back it up. Not sure if you guys have that over here, as all the SGS3 sections are starting to look alike to me today.
Anyways, moved out of Development and to General.

Necessary downloads from the Play Store
SuperUser or SuperSU -- One will work, the other won't -- --A MUST HAVE for any rooted phone! Superuser/SuperSU is the app that manages what apps on your rooted device have access to su. Apps that are granted su have elevated permissions and can modify just about any part of the system. The app consists of two parts, Superuser.apk and the su binary.
Superuser.apk runs as any other app and gives you, the user, a place to see what apps you have allowed or denied, as well as view a log of what apps have used su when.
Link2SD-- DO NOT USE until rooted.--Link2SD is an application that makes it easy for Android 1.6+ users with root privileges on their phone to move applications to the SD card.
The idea behind is same with apps2sd scripts, linking applications to SD card's second partition but differs in two ways.
One, instead of linking /data/app folder (that means moving all applications), you can select applications that you want to move.
Two, it's an application which means has a user interface. You can manage your applications with few clicks.
It also provides native apps2sd features on Android 2.2 and higher. It can move any non-protected user apps to SD card (force move), with batch moving capability.
That feature uses Android's standard SD-card installation feature and does not require a second partition. It can break some apps if they are not meant to be moved to the SD card (Such as Widgets).
BusyBox--DO NOT USE until rooted. --A MUST HAVE for any rooted phone! Almost EVERY rooted applications needs BusyBox to perform their magic, if you have a rooted phone then you NEED BusyBox.
Pro version contains Backup feature (for safer installs), uninstall feature, Advance Smart install feature, the ability to hand pick the applets you want, safety check for missing applets on start, and better overall support. The pro version will receive more frequent updates than the free version will.
Root Checker (optional)--Checks for ROOT -- Use AFTER Installing a Superuser app.

I did the boot-loop process and then the root process. I had no errors and was rooted on the first try. You should not need to factory reset. This is only the boot- loop fix and root. No new recovery or roms.
Anyone else try this?

Hi fathertomany,
Thank You, it worked, root granted and superuser installed.
Wow, I may be only the second person in the world after you to get one rooted
So to confirm and Thank, Yes, this rooted it easy and quick, can't believe it but awesome!
Thanks!

Wow 230 views and only 1 other person telling me it worked for them? I would like to keep up with this and maybe figure out some way to get roms and such, like twrp, themes, etc... But I need to know if there are any bugs or not by following these instructions. I am not a DEV but am willing to try to accomplish things people want. Currently trying to get twrp ported by someone for this phone. Whoever is willing to work on the port should pm me.
Hey I'm new to posting but I've been on android for a few years. I'm having troubles with booting into recovery mode. Whenever I try it shows some yellow text at the bottom. Something about the data directory. Think u can help me fix this please? Thank u
[Edit] My phone has been doing that since way before I downloaded the zip file. So just to clarify it has nothing to do with the file

I have boldly went where no one has gone before. After much soul searching about bricking my son's phone because I have only followed guides, I decided that this phone was so similar to the AVAIL/MERIT that I would use that method to root his Concord. I did this because his phone ran out of memory and subsequently got stuck on boot-loop. Because this worked, I wrote this tutorial.
NO PC NEEDED!!!!!!!!
This quick tutorial will help you get into recovery and root.
What files are needed are not my work! I only decided to use the ZTE MERIT GUIDE AND ZIP for my son's T-mobile Concord(V768).
To get out of the BOOT-LOOP
1.) Power off the phone by removing the battery.
2.) Replace battery.
3.) Boot into recovery by holding Volume- and power button until the android with the triangle appears. this will appear AFTER the android that is by himself!!
4.) Press the home button
5.) Navigate to the 3rd choice - " wipe data/factory reset"
6.) Select by pressing the menu button
7.) When the wipe is complete, navigate to and select - "reboot system"
To Root
1.) Download attached update.zip file
2.) copy/move update.zip to root of sdcard
3.) Power off the phone
4.) reboot into recovery by holding Volume- and power button until the android with the triangle appears.
5.) At this screen, Press the HOME button.
6.) scroll to your second option, navigating with the volume buttons - "Apply update from sdcard" and press the Menu key
7.) Navigate to YES and press the menu key (no data will be wiped but the update will be installed and you will be rooted)
8.) Navigate to - "reboot system now" and select by pressing the menu key.
9.) Install superuser or equivalent. I installed Superuser and root checker before installing the update.
If for some reason, you get an error, try to factory reset first.
Congratulations!!! You are now Rooted!!
Special THANKS to JCASE for his work on the ZTE MERIT UPDATE.ZIP mentioned above. The UPDATE.ZIP file was downloaded from Stayboogy's tutorial.

What carrier and version and build number are you on? You can find that under settings--> about phone. My carrier is Family Mobile (which runs on T-Mobile) and I'm running Android 2.3.7 and Build number V768V1.0.0B20.
I am having trouble getting the Concord to boot into recovery. I can't seem to get to a screen with a triangle. Can you walk through the steps to get it into recovery again or possibly post a video?
The video stayboogy supplied in the link you posted for the Avail/Merit said to put the phone into recovery mode by holding the volume up key and the menu key while pressing the power button. When I do that the concord freezes at the green android logo and does not go into recovery mode and does not boot normally. I have to pull the battery. Same thing if I hold both of the volume buttons and the menu key.
If I hold the volume down and the menu key (or just the volume down key or just the menu key) and turn on the power button I get the green android startup screen followed by a screen with a white box and an orange arrow coming out of the box pointing to a small green android. When I get to this screen pressing home or the volume up or down buttons just cause it to reboot.

I personally have not noticed this. make sure your phone is off. make sure you press the volume down button first. while still holding the volume down button press and hold the power button. DO NOT let go of either button until the android with the triangle appears. you will see the android by himself first, CONTINUE HOLDING THE BUTTONS FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS. When the android with the triangle appears, you can let go of both buttons. Then press your home button. this should bring up your recovery menu.
USE THE VOLUME BUTTONS TO NAVIGATE UP AND DOWN.
USE THE MENU BUTTON TO SELECT YOUR CHOICES. I
BELIEVE, THE POWER BUTTON ACTS AS THE BACK BUTTON? (MAYBE JUST USE THE BACK BUTTON.) I will check this when my son gets home from school. he is the one with the phone.
remember there is NO factory wipe necessary, unless you are trying to get out of the boot-loop.

You can find most of that in the title "Confirmed!! T-Mobile Concord (V768) ROOT and BOOT-LOOP fix!!"
My Android BUILD will be posted when my son gets home. he has the phone. It should be the same. I am using the same carrier with the same version of android. Android 2.3.7
I am also on the family mobile plan.

I tried again with no luck. In the Root ZTE Concord thread a few of us tried and were never able to get into recovery mode.
I just tried the steps you listed but I get the same screen with the white box and arrow and if I continue to hold the power and volume down button it causes the phone to reboot. If I keep holding down the power and volume down even after it reboots it just repeats, green android screen, white box screen, reboot, green android screen, white box, reboot, etc. I can record a video of the screen later today if you are interested.
Did you ever install an over the air update? I did months ago and I wonder if that update changes or removes how to get into recovery mode.
I have T-Mobile android 2.3.7 build number V768V1.0.0B19

I will attempt to find this screen later when my son gets home. 3:30pm central.I have only owned the phone for about 1 1/2 months. I do not believe that I have received any update OTA or any other way. my son downloads a lot of CRAP. He eventually got stuck in the pink logo boot-loop. I proceeded to do the boot-loop fix that I listed and after the factory reset to get out of it, I confirmed that it booted normally, turned the phone off and went back into recovery.
One thing I did notice about this phone is the power button. It is "weird". I am one of those that mash the buttons EXTRA hard to insure that they are being pressed. I make sure that I use both hands, one finger on each hand for each button and I hold as still as possible. Making sure that I don't toggle any buttons. at first, my phone would some how be stuck on the green android that is by himself. What your are saying sounds similar but I never noticed the white box. I think that this might be the download mode. if you have some kind of case on the phone, try removing it.

Have you ever applied the over the air update? I have and I wonder if that has eliminated the ability to get into recovery mode.
I stated in my previous post that I have not noticed one. I bought the phone at the end of February. I rooted the phone the night before I posted this tutorial. I will check the build version as soon as my son gets home. FYI, The rom is totally stock as no one has had this rooted, unlocked bootloader or otherwise, that I know of.

I tried again and made sure to hold the buttons firmly without moving but have the same result. Maybe your son never applied the OTA update and that's why you can get in recovery mode.

I was just wondering if the OTA update was applied by bkool96 and maybe that's why we both can't get recovery mode to boot.
If you are willing to back up what you can and then do a factory restore. You might have luck that way. I will try to get into recovery later today since my son has been using the phone but I may still be able to seeing as how I am already rooted.

Also, googling it, I noticed that I may be A** backwards. Meaning, Try Volume UP and the power button. If that works then I will edit the tutorial.

hi everyone, i received today my phone, it seems to be a korean import unlocked for sims but not rooted.
i had a galsaxy s2 for a few years and know how to root and flash a rom, but problem is, on my htc one m8 there is no option to disable fast boot in the battery menu
i looked everywhere on the phone, it's just not there. i looked on the net and somebody suggested CleanFLASH 1.0 just to start the phone in hboot, but can't manage to find the file anymore, links are dead, any suggestion?
thanks
anybody can help with this? I'm bloody stuck without a rooted phone!!!! thank you

Is your main problem not being able to get into bootloader (I don't see how else the fast boot power option would prevent you from rooting)? Just hold the power button until the options come up, select Restart, then when the screen goes black, immediately (before the white HTC boot screen) hold the power down rocker, and don't let go until hboot appears.
Alternately, hold power and vol up to force a reboot of the phone, then when the screen goes dark, switch to holding the vol down rocker.
Why are you worry so much on "fast boot" ?
You don't necessarily need to press power + volume down to go to hboot/bootloader.
I never disable "fast boot". Just simply restart, wait for the downanimation complete (it turn black screen) then press volume down (no holding power button) ... it will go to hboot.
Or you can plug in your device to PC with USB debugging enabled. Open a command prompt from your adb folder, type command adb reboot bootloader
thank you. i've tried all the above all afternoon, including all the tools available but phone will only either reboot, sometimes in safe mode, or reboot regularly.
I think I know what I'm doing. I need to unlock bootloader to root, but this is not possible. When connecting to pc by usb, and using tools, from comand line, computer screen just hangs and nothing else happens. with another program I can only see a tiny "fast boot...." on the bottom left corner of the screen. I cannot basically unlock the bootloader hence root the device.
another few things i notice you may be able to double check.
trying to reboot in standard recovery, the android buddy comes up on the screen, like dead, with "no command" message. then pressing volume up will take to recovery screens, never seen this before.
And last, but not least, checking the serial number from the menu > about phone > status the serial number comes as
0123456789ABCDEF
I checked with HTC support on chat and they basically gave me the registered serial number for this IMEI and told me of course that it is impossible that it has another number as this cannot be changed.
Question is... Have I got a clone here??
edit: sorry about the data, it was not set the apn, now it works. normally used to have automatically apn from sim card, but it's not the case for this phone/sim
I bet you do have a clone, does the phone has a playstore ? Install some phone specs app and see what it comes up with.

The subsequent responses by clpv5 and myself understood that he was talking about "Fast boot" in Settings.
The only reason the "old" root guides instructed to turn off "Fast boot" in power settings, is that this mode enabled would prevent you from entering bootloader from a "powered down" conditon (since with the "Fast boot" option enabled, the phone was never actually powered down, just a deep sleep mode).
But as we pointed out, you could always enter bootloader from a reboot, since a reboot is always a true reboot. This would work regardless of whether "Fast boot" was enabled or not in power settings.
Although it should be noted this thread is from July 2014, and the "Fast boot" option was removed some time ago.

Thanks. I was looking for an explanation like that; in fact, somehow that's why I ended up in this thread. Though, it's useful yet, since there must be lots of devices still running the 'Fast boot' option due to certain manufacturer's lack of firmware updates and because not every device in need for support out there is actually a new device

thank you. i've tried all the above all afternoon, including all the tools available but phone will only either reboot, sometimes in safe mode, or reboot regularly.
Have I got a clone here??
edit: sorry about the data, it was not set the apn, now it works. normally used to have automatically apn from sim card, but it's not the case for this phone/sim

oh man, i thought i was the only one !
i have the same exact phone !
my serial number is exactly 123456789ABCDEF !!!
mine is a chinese mtk htc one m8. after hours of search i figured my phone name is alps_htc one m8 and yes my friend, is a fu..... clone !!!
i tried everything ! and search whole bunch of websites and forums like xda and xda itself, nothing happened !
i also get the => fastboot....... every time i try to go to bootloader !
this is something that you guys who trying to help here had to understand, these clone phones settings is completely different from other phones and even the original one ! hold power button then hold volume up or down, doesn't work !
every time it stock in => fastboot..... none of the buttons of the damn phone works and i have to wait until the battery drain ! real pain in the ass !!! because you know, htc one m8 does not have battery removing option, another pain in the ass !!!!!!!!!
i had a another problem too, when i wipe this clone phone, amazingly, the IMEI was gone !!! the phone said "invalid IMEI" !!! witch after hours of search i flashed it with an app from mobileuncle tools, thank to them amazing app allowed me to flash a custom IMEI from a unused phone.
now i use another htc device from the original manufacturer.
a little piece of advice, do not buy a clone phone ! cause it's going to piss you off !!!
and if you don't know how to recognize a clone from a original phone, its simple, just check the serial number, if it's feel weird, just give back the phone to seller, smile, and run out of the store !
thanks to XDA btw.
This guide is similar to my Moto G5 Plus guide, but is a bit more complicated due to not having a signed image with the correct EFS items.
WARNING: These tools can easily brick your phone, use this entirely at your own risk. Only advanced users should attempt this.
Requirements
Moto E4 Qualcomm version (tested on Verizon XT1767, but should work on all)
QXDM software (specifically, EFS Explorer) and basic knowledge of how to use it
Steps
Ensure you have a working QXDM setup, you can follow this tutorial step 1, then from step 4 until step 9 only
Insert Freedom SIM, boot up phone and ensure it can connect properly
Shut down phone. Hold the volume up and down buttons at the same time while pressing power
Press volume down button until you get to the "BP TOOLS" item, tap the power button once on it
After the phone boots up, start up EFS Explorer from the QXDM suite, connect to the phone (it will show up as "MSM8917" under QPST Configuration). You can do this by selecting the phone from the QPST Configuration screen and going to the "Start Clients" menu item and choosing "EFS Explorer." Choose the same port on the next screen, leaving SPC code as is, and press OK. Refer to the linked tutorial above.
Navigate to nv -> item_files -> wcdma -> rrc. In this folder, right click in the file list on the right hand side, select "Copy Item File from PC" and select each of the files in the attached zip (wcdma_rrc_fast_return_to_lte_after_csfb_timer, wcdma_rrc_fast_return_to_lte_after_csfb, and rrc_b66_plmn_support) and press ok (do this one by one). Ensure "Overwrite Allowed" is selected.
Go to the phone menu -> reset phone. Then reboot your phone.
Proof
Note: If you remove the SIM card you may have to do this over again.
I have implemented this fix and it works great.
Just some tips to save others some time.
1. You do not need USB debugging/Developer options on or the Motorola USB drivers installed.
2. The archive in the linked QXDM/QPST tutorial is no longer available but someone reposted in the last few pages of that thread.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73160851&postcount=1187
3. If using Windows 10 you must boot your phone into BP Tools mode before you connect to the PC. After connecting the phone under Device Manager you must go to View > Show hidden devices to see the Moto E4 appear 4 times under Other devices.
4. You must force install the HTC driver that came with the archive I talked about in step 2. However to do this you must disable signed driver enforcement in Windows 10. Unfortunately I could not disable this with the command line option so you have to do the following:
Click the Start Start menu and select Settings.
Click Update and Security.
Click on Recovery.
Click Restart now under Advanced Startup.
Click Troubleshoot.
Click Advanced options.
Click Startup Settings.
Click on Restart.
On the Startup Settings screen press 7 or F7 to disable driver signature enforcement.
5. Once Windows 10 boots up connect the phone that booted in BP Tools mode. Once you are in the Device Manager > Other devices you will update the driver of the 2nd instance of Moto E4 in the list of 4.
6. After installing the HTC driver you should see the HTC Modem appear under Modems in Device manager. Right click > Properties and get the COM port of the HTC modem to use with QPST.
Hope this helps someone.
