Some quick help please - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive been gone for a really long time... so I forgot a few things, ok so maybe a lot....
I want to go from ec05 to EI22 on my epic that I use daily... and want a better stable rom so two questions: -
Whats a good stable EI22 rom?
Do I have to install a new kernel compatible with this modem?

I have had success with Legendary 2.2, it's excellent.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339217
I also highly recommend the ICS theme here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162821
These as a combo are stable and look amazing.
I believe you will need to update your modem, modem flashing instructions can be found here:

You don't have to update the modem... modems are independent from the roms... and if you install an ei22 custom rom it will come with an ei22 kernel... all of these things can be found by searching the development thread...

Thanks guys I just needed a little nudge in the right direction.. I appreciate it.

Also note that all Epic ROMs are good and stable. Every phone is different so what works for someone may not work for you so questions like "what's the best ROM" don't apply here. You just have to grab one of the top 10 listed in Development, read some of the thread and flash.

I highly recommend viper rom! I get great battery and speed from the latest release. And I have no force closes at all.

The OP said he did not want to use odin and upgrade the modem.
But, I do agree that the latest viper rom is great. Using odin to upgrade the modem is not difficult and the epic is pretty much impossible to brick so I would encourage you to try upgrading your modem to dk28 and going with viper or bonsai. Both are great roms. If you don't like them it is easy to use odin to return to stock.

Yeah i agree, however viper has to much going on like the lock and unlock sounds get annoying afther a while but its still a good rom. Bonsai is probably the best rom I think super smooth and no f/c.

Syndicate rom is exactly what your looking for. No odin runs on Di18.

Oh my bad, I thought the DI18 viper rom was still available but I just checked and it isn't. So then my next opinion is Syndicate or Epic Experience.
If you're looking for a DI18 ROM, OP, just click the link in my signature.
If you want 2.1: Go with ACS rom
If you want 2.2: Go with midNIGHT, bonsai, or viper [in that order]
I was on midNIGHT for the longest and it is fast, stable, everything works! I'm currently on viper. I def like the rom. I find that the battery seems to drain faster than midNIGHT even though i'm getting about 9hrs on viper. Navigation is not working atm, but i'm sure it'll be fixed by the weekend.
That said, being a former hero owner, it may seem confusing and hard at first but its really not difficult at all... just read up and drop a reply, someone will be willing to help!
Hey man I came from a Hero and I felt really intimidated too. I actually thought I bricked my Epic first and then had to learn how to use ODIN. Its actually pretty sweet because as long as you can boot into "download mode" on your phone (the number 1 and power) you can restore back to stock via ODIN. I would suggest you take the time read up on how to use ODIN and flash the dk28 build with the modem. Just be aware that it can mess with GPS.
I finally have a ROM I like "Truley Epic Rebirth" its the only DK28 Rom that has a modified kernel that will give you full adb permissions. Every other Rom only gives you root permission via shell with is annoying if you do any font customizations or custom boot-screens etc...
Bonsai ROM definitely! 4G Sprint hotspot app works, nav, gps, no force closes. I'm running it with ADW on top and it's quite stable.

do as he says! if you don't want to upgrade to dk28 modem then syndicate ROM is def the way to go.. smoothest dkI18 rom out.
Flashing zips is easy with the epic. I say try em all and decide for yourself which one you like best. Load up your sd card and while watching your favorite tv show flash away until you find one you like. I will tell you this though, all of the 2.2 roms are based on the same kernel until we have an official source so there isn't a whole lot of difference. As far as appearance goes you can theme over any rom. Personally I'm running midnight rom with the emotionless beast theme but I change my rom out from time to time, one thing I don't change is my theme. Love the emo beast!
If you want to go to froyo then def. Bonsai. A new version is getting ready to be released and its fast and very stable.

[Q] Need some help....

Ok I have alot going on over here on my brothers Epic 4G. First off i rooted it and is running ACS SyndicateROM Twilight Zone 1.0.4 (Malanga) EB13 build, im pretty sure you guys know exactly which ROM thats is, but anyways, he is getting horrible battery life and I was going to try to put him back stock and see what the newest updates for the Epic would be. For some reason whatever I do to try to Odin it never works but thats another story. Basically what I want to know is what ROM out there that doesnt really have alot of bells and whistles and that has great battery life that I can load up? Since I cant seem to upgrade to EC05, I guess i have to stick with a EB13 build.
I also know kernels has alot to do with the battery life as well and right now its running kernel 2.6.32.9. IDK just by looking at the kernel you know if it has bad battery life or what. I am going to try to wipe the battery stats and see how that works out.
Sorry for all the noobish questions. I am very familiar with loading ROMS and kernels and Clockwork and all that since im a ROM tester for the Droid 1, and I know things are similiar but I do see their are some differences. If someone could help me out I would greatly appreciate it.
Go to Development section. There are several EC05 ROMs you can flash. Look at the EC05 ReRFS ROM.

Midnight Rom 5.2. It will link you to his homepage to download it, but you can flash it over EB13 and it will automatically update you to EC05. It's a very nice, fast and smooth rom. He has currently had to leave development right now for some family issues, but the rom is up to date and very nice. Check it out and hit me up if you have any more questions that I might be able to help you with.

So question, any ROM that you go to thats upgradable, for example me on EB13 and a ROM I want to flash thats EC05, it will automatically update it? Or is it just this ROM that does it or all of them?

Not all of them do. That one does for sure, and their might be a few others. Just be sure to read the OP in the thread for descriptions. He also has a EC05 modem package on his site with a YouTube video showing how to update the modem to EC05 if you just want the modem and not the rom. If you click the Autism banner in my signature it will take you to his site and then go to the Android Development section and he has tons of useful information on how to update and you can also download his roms there. You don't have to register or nothing on his site just click what you need.
Read the OP for the ROM. Some will update you and others tell you to Odin the EC05 modem after flashing. There is also an EC05 modem flashable update. All in the Developement section.

1) This Belongs in Q/A section
2) Sprint can't push you EI22 or EL30 if you are on SRF or any other custom rom
3) You can flash any rom EI22 or EL30 custom rom you want right from clockwork and flash to upgrade your modem from EC05 to EI22 then to EL30. They are all good and really only depends on your preference. If you like SRF then I might suggest Legendary or Revival to you.
4) This answers every question you have posed so don't reply to it and let it die off the development page. If you have more questions please open I new thread in Q/A and I you will get all the help you need there.
Thanks!
Just flash an EI22 pre-rooted ROM. Any are good.
For future, this goes in "Q&A", not development. Jayharper, can you relocate this, por favor?
Russian Nyan Cat, anyone?

I knew I posted wrong forum...Thanks Bigoron
Thanks to all will post in Q&A.

Holy WOW, SRF 1.1.1? Man, time to hop into the 21st century brotha! I know what it's like to find something you like and not want to change it though. I usually stay on most ROMs until the next next update comes out. I get something that works as well as I expect a custom ROM to, and I'll sit with it for a while, just not quite like this!
And yeah, as the guys above said, you can't update OTA if you're running anything custom as the install will fail.
I would suggest upgrading your CWM to version 5.x.x.x (whatever it is now) and then flashing one of the EI22 based ROMs. Legendary is a good and stable one, I'm assuming that's what you're looking for.

New to epic 4g touch

Hi all, I just came over from Motorola and must say this is a sweet phone. This phone came with 4.0.4 on it which seems nice. Anyway with my Motorola I had to unlock my bootloader, any need for that here? Any info on root and installing roms would deffinently be appreciated.

There is a lot to be found if you look through the threads.
I found this WIKI to be of great help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Epic_4G_Touch
You can find a list of ROM's available for the phone included with a link to the thread on them where even more information can be found such as battery life, specs, kernels, and modems that are compatible with the ROM.
Also look at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1267879
Personally I went back to Stock Rooted EL29 and am running Calkulins E4GT ROM which is fantastic in both liability and battery life. That can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332837
If you decide to go back. Just my opinion. If you want to stay on ICS then here is a ROM that a lot of people have had success with it looks like.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363071
That is for rooted 4.0.4
Here is another great article to read.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1587607
It explains to you the CWM recovery and how it works. Definitely handy information.
Here is the process I used to root my phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
Remember to back up any important information you have. I just used the Samsung Kies desktop software and that worked well for me.
Good luck! Hopefully I helped!

Best AOSP Rom?

Hi, I am not new to rooting and custom ROMs but it has been a while and the forum has so many roms that it is hard to decide which is the most stable.
Would you guys please recommend to me the best/most stable/most customizable(cyanogen) AOSP rom for this phone? Basically I'd want the best CM9 rom and hopefully CM10 once its stable.
Thanks

Interesting.. so thats in the original development section, whats the difference between original and android development?
Also, I'm a little lost on the whole recovery thing... can someone please explain it to me and how I can get the safe clockwork for my s2 so I can flash the CM9 you guys posted? My baseband is the FH13
Edit: What do you guys think about AOKP? I loved it when i had my evo... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514665
Can I follow the simple steps in that post? Any requirements beforehand?
I have not seen a consistent explanation about the difference between the Android and original development forums.
I have not tried AOKP. That particular version you linked is no longer being developed. There is a newer Jelly Bean build here:

1. I believe the difference between the to sections is that Original development is for AOSP based roms while android development is for roms based of stock or leaked firmware. That being said i dont think that many people understand that when they post and it has been kind of a Cluster f.
2. Are you currently on the OTA? you will need to odin a kernel that has a working recovery with it. If youre going to another rom right away it may be easiest to odin EL26 cwm, then load into recovery and flash because this will install the kernel/recovery packaged in the rom.
3. Ive used AOKP some and its pretty nice but i am one that likes to stay with a rom that still has activity. That way if i have problem there may be a chance that it is going to get fixed. But if you are ok with a few problems here and there go ahead and test out CM10 or sbrissens AOSP.

1. Yeah I was going towards that conclusion but I dont think people understand it either.
2. I already flashed CM9. I used the mobile odin method in this link: http://e4gtcm.blogspot.com/p/cm9-install-guide.html
I flashed the kernel and I got stuck on recovery and couldnt get back to my regular rom. I was just wanting to get a recovery then I mounted the storage and put CM9 and gapps and flashed away. Now im running CM9 and its flawless.
3. Can you link me sbrissens AOSP? Thanks!
