bootanimation question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've done some searching and cant seem to find the info i need. I am trying to change my bootanimation to a custom one with sound. I found a tutorial, but i cant seem to find the location to the boot animation in the rom i am using. I am using the energy 3.5 sense rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290300
i even used es file explorer but the only bootanimation i find is the one i installed in the root of the sd card to change it. where can i look to find the old bootani?

Check in these locations
System/customize/resource
System/data/local
System/media

Better yet, look in /system/customize/CID and open (in a text editor) default.xml. Near the bottom of the file, it should give you the path to the folder where the system is looking for the bootanimation & startup sound. The below is from the Express 3.0.1 ROM. NRG's ROM should have similar information.
Code:
<BootConfiguration>
<[B]BootAnimation animation="/data/local/hTC_bootanimation.zip" audio="/system/customize/resource/android_audio.mp3"[/B] />
</BootConfiguration>
<ShutdownConfiguration>
<ShutdownAnimation image_png="/data/local/hTC_downanimation.zip" image="" fps="15" />
</ShutdownConfiguration>

Interesting, Cap. Didn't know about that.

ok guys... i found where the current one is which is where i need to send my new one. the location is system/customize/resource. i rename the current one to bootanimationold.zip, but when i try to move or copy the new one to that location from the root of my sd card it goes through the transfer process and then says the file couldnt be moved. i am using es file explorer. i have checked both root explorer and mount file system.
am i missing something or could the bootanimation i got be corrupt?

I don't believe its corrupt, but you can redownload to check.
On the other hand I've never had much luck with estrong as a "root explorer". I would recommend root explorer or root browser. Root explorer does cost but is worth it, while root browser has a free version I have not really used it.

just download it and change it with RC Tweaks

Glad you got it working.

[Q] Flashable Bootanimation.

Are there any flashable boot animations for the DHD?
and in particular, the droid x boot?
if there isn't could someone please tell me how to change mine to this? with links to the files? or a link to a flashable zip?
You don't need to flash them... just use Root Explorer and drop "bootanimation.zip" in \data\local
For the actual animations just search the Themes section in the Desire HD forum. You can also look in the Themes sections for original Desire as most of them should work too. I'm sure someone will have ported the Droid X one, if not try looking in the Themes sections of the Droid X forum... you get the idea

Extract the zip file for the boot sound as it's the .mp3 you need to use. Bootanim stays as .zip
Reply back know how you get on / if you need any help etc.
Oh, and be sure to press the "Mount R/W" when in the correct folder in Root Explorer. Wont let you change anything otherwise

wow I feel stupid. I was using the temp files from the top of the list in my sdcard XD thank you.
oh wait it didn't work xD I have bootanimation.zip and android_audio.mp3 in data/ local and it doesn't work. i've rebooted twice since they've been there. what else am I doing wrong ?
Try the two files I have attached and see if they work. You will need to extract the zip for the start sound as it wouldn't let me attach the mp3. Also, you will have to rename the other zip from black_bootanimation.zip to bootanimation.zip. I have loads of them so need to keep the file names different.
Reboot and they should work
Still no luck. even with your files, in data/local with r/w it just won't work? is it something to do with me being on the stock rom, kernel and radio?
I don't know but this is really weird ? could it be a permissions thing? thank you so much for trying to help me though.
it couldn't be that i'm using a mac could it?
No probs man
I've never had a poke around inside a stock ROM for DHD but I expect the files still go in the same place, so it must be a permissions thing as I doubt it would be radio or kernal related.
Silly question I should have maybe asked earlier... you have a rooted phone right? If not none of this will work!
As for a being on a Mac, shouldn't make a difference as you can transfer all the stuff to /data/local/ on your phone... only need a computer to put the files on your SD card if you didn't download them with your phone.
haha yes my phone is definitely rooted, I'm pretty sure I have radio and engineering S-OFF, I had SHIP, now I have ENG, I would really like to know what the problem is though.
would it be possible to fix the permissions ? should I use rom manager to fix them ? or do it manually in root explorer?
If it is a permission problem, rom manager's fix permissions option did not solve the problem.
It would be so much easier just having a flashable zip xD
You could give it a go with ROM Manager yeah.
I must admit, I'm stumped with this! I bet it's something really easy that we're both overlooking!
rom manager didn't work.
it has to be something obvious. I would flash a new rom, but then I need to flash a new radio, because last time I ran leedroid, and android revolution HD, my microphone wouldn't work so I had to restore my backup.
having to do all that just for a boot animation and sound would be such a pain.
Well I'm going to sleep, most likely, and hopefully someone will have worked something out by the time i get back or wake up.
You could push it with adb.

Yeah, that's definitely another option.

Or another option is that your current rom just does not read bootanimation from /data/local/. Try it with custom rom, or put it to /system/.. I do not remember which folder. But look for bootanimation.zip.

I found bootanimation, not .zip but i can't make the system file r/w only r/o
after much trial and error, i found it at last....
@P1xelVandal in case you had not installed any custom ROM then the original bootanimation.zip can be found in the following location:
/system/customize/resource
Rename the original one to bootanimation_bak.zip before replacing in case any error occurs.
And, of course, you have to mount the file system in R/W mode for the changes to take place.. worked fine for me... piece of cake now.
Bump...
I've also just read somewhere that you could try /system/customize/resource/
Let us know how you get on mate
I gave up and flashed a radio and Android Revolution HD. It works fine now. Thank you for helping

[Q] How To Make a .txt file?

I tried searching and didnt find what I was looking for
Can someone explain how to make a .txt file? I was wanting to modify my power widgets in MikFroyo and I am lost as to what program to use to make it. Thanks for the help
You can use any word processor, the easiest one is probably notepad or wordpad. When you save the file make sure to select .txt as the file type
If you mean on your phone, get es file explorer from the market. Then you just hit: menu new and name it with a .txt at the end of the file name
Ok, so I got how to make the .txt file but using ES file explorer it wont let me paste/move it into the system>customize directory... It just says "copy failed"...
Also, the permission set on the existing widget.txt file are set to read only so I cant just modify that one...
I got it to copy one time and upon reboot the phone stuck at the white HTC EVO screen.. had to android back to pre-messed up copied file...
Anybody already done this and know what I'm missing?
The reason it is not copying is because the system is mounted read only.you can try going into settings in es and go to root options at the bottom. Those options don't work on all roms but you can check it out and see. Mount as read write and then you should be able to copy to system

Alright, so I used the "experimental" feature to copy the .txt file into the system>customize directory and it actually worked, I have my power widgets the way I want them now..
But, I tried it again a little bit ago and ES file Exlp wouldnt let me use that feature... It kept saying that "mounting failed, this feature wont work on your phone."... Any idea what's up with that?
thanks for the help BTW

Livewallpaper on Bonsai

Hi All,
I was wondering if I could put out a request for some APKs. I would like to have live wallpapers on Bonsai and have tried putting livewallpaper.apk and the picker into my Epic but I don't have Root Explorer and I can't seem to change the permissions on those files. Right now all of the APKs I found have Read Yes Write Yes and the other one No. All of the APKs in my app directory have Read Yes Write No and other one No. Could someone post those APKs with permissions set like that? I don't know if that is my exact problem or if it is worth it to buy RE for only that purpose.
TIA,
DD
I believe its been mentioned before that ES File Explorer brings most of the Root Explorer functionality for free. I could be wrong though since ive never tried it myself. Worth a shot though if its just a permissions issue.

U can also use sdx stock app removal app, just put the apk in the adx folder on the SD card and go Into the app then to manage backups and got restore

Thanks. I have tried everything. I could not change the permissions using sdx or ES File manager. All I could do with those programs was access the system directories. Unless I am doing something wrong, I will either need to get Root Explorer and change the permissions or get altered livewallpaper apks.
I think the frankenstine rom thread has a flashable zip for live wallpapers

OK. I think I may be confusing some people.
I would like to have Live Wallpapers in Bonsai since it's been removed. I did some research and found that you need to install the livewallpaper apks into the system/app directory. I did that using ES File Manager and rebooted. It didn't work. I did some more research and a few people had the same issue. The solution was to make sure the permissions in the livewallpaper apks was exactly the same as the permissions as the other apks in the apps directory. The apks in the directory all have Read Yes, Write No and Hidden No. All of the livewallpaper apks I found had permissions set up as Read Yes, Write Yes and Hidden No. I figure if I change the Write from Yes to No, it might work. I'm not 100% positive which is why I don't know if it's worth it to buy Root Explorer just to experiment. I'm hoping someone can provide me with the livewallpaper and livewallpaperspicker apks with altered permissions that have those settings.
Estewa_619, I will try that ROM. Thanks!
Tried the Frankenstein ROM livewallpaper apks and it still didn't work. The permissions are still set up as Read Yes, Write Yes and Hidden No.

This is very easy to solve. Go to midnight rom and download it to computer. Open up the midnight extras folder and you will find lots of zip files in there that are all flashable in CWM. Just extract the folder, then copy the live wallpaper zips you want onto your sd card, then flash in CWM.
Alternatively, what I normally do is download the rom you want to flash (Bonsai). Open it up on your pc. Navigate to system/apps. Paste the livewallper apks into that directory. Then flash normally. This will include any files you want in the system/app folder.

7zip (windows) is what u want to use 2 open the zip but DO NOT EXTRACT it!!! Well in 7zip paste the apks u want into system/apps. Then close 7zip. Move the rom 2 ur sdcard and flash as u would normaly. U can also replace the boot/shutdown animation and a few other parts of the rom that you can add or subtract stuff from. I hope this help as not to sound offensive but u seem a bit newbish and 7zip isa great tool for viewing zip files w/o extracting them took me a good deal of time 2 find this handy tool, hope this helps ya out...

I tried all of the cut and pasting techniques. None of them worked. I came across this online:
Code:
adb push LiveWallpapersPicker.apk /sdcard/
adb shell
Code:
su
remount rw
cat /sdcard/LiveWallpapersPicker.apk > /system/app/LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
exit
exit
I went into the dos shell and sure enough it worked!
Thanks for all the suggestions!

Here are the .zips from the midNIGHT ROM extras folder... Flash one of these, should work.
But the adb method works just as well... Maybe even faster.

[Q] How to change file permissions without using root explorer?

Im new at this, just rooted my phone yesterday . Im trying to download the sprint navigation apk because, well, i like it. Ive read other posts and they all talk about using chmod and i honestly have no idea what that is. If you could tell me how to change system/app folder permissions to read write instead of just read so i can move the .apk in that folder thatd be great

Download ES File Explorer from the market. Go into settings and root options. Check the Root Explorer box, the HIAPK will already be checked. Then check mount file system. When you are all done, before exiting go back and uncheck mount and root, or you may have trouble running it a second time reading the sd card. Not all have this problem.
You can also just install the Sprint Nav apk conventionally to data. It doesn't have to be in system/app.
Thanks Kenny...worked perfectly. Used it to remove the camera shutter file in system/media/audio/ui so the camera wouldn't make noise when taking pics. It was an r only file.

Replicators Bootanimations

I plan to make several of these so i will use this post to stash them all in. My plan is to have long graphic animations, and not just a flashing image.
With each of these you will need to apply them the same way with the instructions below.
1. Extract the zip to a separate folder which contains the ATT_bootanimaiton.zip and the ATTSonicLogoNoSnap_Retail.mp3.
2. Put both files on the internal SDcard.
3. You will have to mount your system in the mount option from main menu in the twrp recovery.
4. Using File Manager in cwm or twrp put both the ATT_bootanimaiton.zip and the ATTSonicLogoNoSnap_Retail.mp3 into /system/customize/resource
5. Reboot and watch your new animation.
Wormhole SG-1 Animation

Banana Song Animation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4E9O1IGxS8
NOTE: If you installed JmzTotemC2 you will need to edit the default.xml inside /system/customize/CID and find
Code:
<BootConfiguration>
<BootAnimation animation="/system/customize/resource/ATT_bootanimaiton.zip" />
</BootConfiguration>
Replace with
Code:
<BootConfiguration>
<BootAnimation animation="/system/customize/resource/ATT_bootanimaiton.zip" audio="/system/customize/resource/ATTSonicLogoNoSnap_Retail.mp3" audiostart="ATT" />
</BootConfiguration>
Otherwise audio won't work!

Due to the audio length limitation, some of these may have no audio until a fix has been done to allow bootanimation sounds to last longer.
